laura evans. senator kennedy lost his battle with brain cancer in his massachusetts home overnight. tom fitzgerald is here now with a look back at the life and legacy of the man who was the kennedy family patriarch. >> reporter: last spring when he endorsed barack obama's presidential campaign, senator edward kennedy invoked his brother's inauguration speech saying the torch would be passed 1969, the senator own life and career took a tragic turn, after attending a party, he drove off a bridge on chappaquiddick island. inside the car, 28-year-old mary jo kapekney. he escaped and never found her -- called police until her body was found the next day. >> that tragedy will live with me the rest of my life. >> reporter: he pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of the accident but the scar of chappaquiddick never left his reputation. after sitting out the 1972 and 1976 campaign, in 1979, kennedy found a president he was ready to run against in his own party. >> today, i formally announce that i am a candidate for president of the united states. >> reporter: kennedy failed to wrestle the democratic nomination from incumbent president jimmy carter and at the 1980 democratic convention, delivered the iconic speech of his carr. >> so work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die. >> reporter: after the presidential run, he divorced his wife joan and the senate which was supposed to be his launching pad became his hold, throwing himself into fights for minimum wage increases, immigration reform and his homework issue -- hallmark issue. >> if health insurance is good enough for the president of the united states and for the vice president of the united states and the members of congress, it's good enough for all the americans, too. >> reporter: president reagan picked robert -- [ indiscernible ] to serve on the u.s. supreme court in 1987 and dendy led a to have his nomination rejected, one of several battles with reagan. >> found happiness marrying his second wife victoria and found a friend in the white house when bill clinton was elected president. years later in the 2008 presidential election, that friendship was tested when hillary was passed over for kennedy's endorsement in favor of barack obama. >> he is tough-minded and also has an uncommon capacity to appeal to the better angels of our neighbor. >> reporter: as he threw his -- as our nature. >> reporter: kennedy faced the biggest fight of his life o. may 17th, 2008, after suffering seizures, he was rushed to massachusetts general hospital where doctors discoverea brain tumor and underwent a three- hour operation to remove the tumor. >> i feel fine. >> reporter: three months after his diagnosis, he returned to make what would be his last appearance ever in the democratic convention. >> the work begins anew. the hope rises again. and the dream lives on. >> reporter: it was only last week that senator kennedy asked the governor of massachusetts to change the way the state would fill a senate vacancy. kennedy himself had pushed for those changes in 200 for. the citizens of the bay state will choose the person for that seat. from massachusetts to d.c. and everywhere the political world is mourning the loss of the man known as the senate's liberal lion. from the current administration to past presidents and retired senators, statements of remembrance are pouring in today and it's indicative of how well respected he was in politics and beyond. >> he's left a great void in our public life and a hole in the harts -- hearts of millions of mens. >> reporter: vice president joe biden speaking with great sadness and admiration for senator ted kennedy. appearing at his energy department event, he set aside his energy legislation to remember his close friend. having served 40 years in the senate longer than all but two other senators in u.s. history, teddy kennedy was considered by some an icon of american politics. president obama said he was one of the greatest senators in history. >> reporter: in the united states senate, i can think of no one who engendered greater respect for members of both sides of the aisle. the seriousness and purpose was matched by humility, warmth and good cheer. >> reporter: taking time out from his vacation on martha's vineyard, the president spoke from the heart after being awakened at 2:00 a.m. to be notified of senator kennedy's passing. >> even though the day was coming for some time now, we awaited it with no small amount of dread. >> for me, it's a great loss of a great friend and a great, great advocate for people. >> reporter: politicians from both sides of the aisle are remembering senator kennedy as someone who could get things done. >> they were like fighting brothers. the next way i would characterize it and care for each other. >> he would have been able to come in and work out a deal. a compromise between the two versions. he would have been able to attract moderate democrats and also keep the base of more liberal democrats in tact. hwas able to reach out to republicans willing to work with him. they knew he wanted to get something done. >> reporter: republicans like former president bush and minority leader john boehner said they remembered him as an elder statesman never disagreeable, have an though they rarely agreed on issues. >> the outpouring of love, gratitude and find memories to which we have allbourne witness is a testament to the way the singular figure in american history touched so many lives. >> reporter: and we have more statements from the political world tonight. senator paul sar baps from maryland, the -- sarbanes from senator writes he was a dear friend and inspirational colleague, having served with him for 30 years in the senate, i saw firsthand his dedicated efforts to build a more just society for all americans and from nancy reagan, given our political differences, the people year sometimes surprised how close ronnie and i were to the kennedy family n. recent years, ted and i found our common ground in stem cell research and i considered him an ally and dear friend. i will miss him. senator kennedy's final farewell begins thursday and friday, he will lay in repiece at the john f. kennedy library and friday night, the family will hold a private ceremony and saturday, the funeral at our lady of perpetual health basilica and senator kennedy will be buried saturday afternoon at lington national semtear. news of his death support mourners flocking to the kennedy grave sites today. the personally, gone to great lengths to help my family individually. which is an every day gentlemen who would go out of his way to help those who needed it and there is a lot to be side for -- said for that. >> reporter: senator kennedy had a home in d.c.'s calorama neighborhood where one called him a great neighbor, dining at kinicade's restaurant in foggy bottom where the owner remembers the senator from massachusetts like the irish soda bread and fine red win. ted kennedy was a lifelong catholic often attending the 10:15 mass in chevy chase at blessed sax ram. >> every year, he would dean aspect one of his -- [ indiscernible ] donate one that was generous and usually brought in eye bit of monthy. >> reporter: he raised big money for inner-city catholic schools in d.c. with the help of john boehner. >> senator kennedy and representative boehner reached across the aisle and joined hands to put together this dinner n. five years, they raised over $5 million to support the schools. >> reporter: i have one more ted kennedy story for you. the one that i saw and he saw -- in recent months and years, on a lawn like this one in the late afternoon, ted kennedy would take his dogs out for a walk and he would bring tennis balls out. rather than strain, he would bring a tennis racket and whack them a huge distance from the ball, the dogs would run and retrieve the balls. he would black them out again o. capitol hill, the senator from massachusetts in the late afternoon was not ted kennedy national figure but another dog lover like you and me. >> he will be missed. thank and happened before 3:00 this afternoon and the 200 block of q street northwest. one of the men died. what you can tell us? >> neighbors are returning home to find their neighborhood wrapped in courtroom scene tape and this has turned into a murder investigation on the the corner of ask third and q street. the two people were stabbed to this afternoon and in broad daylight at 2:30 and one person was killed at this point, d.c. police are desperate for information. as far as we know, they're unsure whether or not the two people were attacked or if they were involved in a fight. they still putting this investigation together. d.c. police sources do tell us the two individuals are described as transgendered and we ask the chief lanier about that moments ago. she's not sure that is not been confirmed according to her and she's not sure whether or not that played a part in this crime. the detectives have little information. no suspect information. there were a number of people outside this afternoon when this happened and could its have been busy talking to them and going door tow door. two people sustained, one person killed and s tells us that they're transgendered. the police are telling us that they need information and the best way to get them that is to text them by texting 5041 for tips. a murder investigation and there is a reward being offered. in the meantime, mass vaccinations, isolation rooms for sick kids and online classes, part of the emergency plan in here's more on how schools are preparing. >> reporter: one of the biggest things we noticed in the school are hand san tazers -- sanitizers everywhere. and with schools and their heavy concentration of young people in one place, the schools are one of the greatest places at risk of spreading swine flu. little kids like to touch things, put their hands in their mouth and spread germs. that makes this pre-k class we visited at flintstone elementary school ground zero in the battle against swine flu. on the school supply list, hand sanitizer. >> and everything to the future and i give everything to the teacher. hand sanitizer and wipes and everything. >> the kid comes in. >> reporter: sick kids go to the school nurse. judy, some of the first signs of infect. >> you have a way to isolate them? we do and an isolation room. >> reporter: in the emergency plan, the prince georges county schools have contingencies to give lessons online and send kids home on reduced or free lunches if schools are forced to close. >> and that is less likely that schools will close unless there is a massive outbreak. >> stopping the spread of the virus is the first line of defense and schools are using hospital cleaners to wipe high contact areas like door knobs, light switches and desks. signs to wash hands. >> we teach the kids to wash in between the fingers and we telephone them to do this. na gets the nail area. >> reporter: in october, the school began large-scale vaccinations and may follow with the h1n1 vaccine if enough is available. >> we don't want to see any deaths of individuals in our county, not among our children or our young adults. >> reporter: seven people in maryland have died of the swine flu so far this year and government estimates say this season, as many as 90,000 people could die nationwide. the health officials say if you see someone who coughs or sneezes gary mcgrady in the fox 5 weather center. >> reporter: this is one we were watching sterday and it became a pomal frhu the national hurricane center this morning. it's a minimal tropical storm right now. winds of 45 miles an hour and the movementere is up to the north and to the northwest and it's moving slow. it will strengthen and into a hurricane off the east coast med it's going take awhile back.  >> their job is to repair the schools. what happen when is custodians and other maintenance workers are laid off? >> it's happening in the district after a multimillion modernization of schools. almost 100 people are getting pink slips. karen gray houston has the story. >> reporter: on adam's place in northeast, 32 warehouseworkers and drivers were shocked to learthis was their last day on the job. >> they have been holding this is together all of these years and now to be turned around and say -- slap them in the face by throwing them out the door. >> reporter: the layoffs come as the city is in the midst of long, overdue updates of crumbling facilities and at the same time the mayor is grappleing with the budget shortfall. the teamstory's union represents the custodians and craftsmen, including painters, plummers and welders who got the ax xe. >> the work has -- a. >> the work has to be done. >> reporter: the d.c. public schools warehouse behind me is said to be full of furniture and supplies waiting to be delivered to area schools except there is nobody inside to do the jobness is all of those workers were of risks. he is one of 30 warehouse employees called in early, 36 years on the job. he knew cutbacks were coming. >> are they going to replace you guys? >> i don't know what is going down. what their plans are. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: we caught up with mayor fenty. he made schools the top priority. we asked him about the risks. >> i don't have any information except everything you're telling me now. it would be iesponsible for me to comment on it. >> reporter: teamsters local 730 richardson has a thought or two on that. >> the mayor wants to take the school system over and doesn't know -- .
