north and wes of charlotte the last couple hours, didn't amount to much. the bigger batch is over central tennessee, northern alabama racing towards the carolinas, 250 miles off to our west. temperatures as cold as they have been all day. upper 20s to near 30 charlotte south, low 20s from i-40 into the mountains where it is in the teens. the air is absolutely bone dry and will be a real battle going on between this dry air and the moisture coming in. a lot of it, now according to latest futurecast will be gobbled up before it reaches the ground. there is the risk of freezing rain for sure around the charlotte area through the morning drive but not necessarily a lot. the mountains, a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain first thing tomorrow morning. for the charlotte area it is more about the freezing rain and for more on what to expect on the roads, lets head to john ahrens outside. >> reporter: the dry air is automatically the first thing and when the wind comes it zips against your faces and stings a little. it is that dry and that will help narrow our focus as far as threats go. we are not talking about ice building up on any of the power lines here. it is said this will be strictly a road issue tomorrow morning. lets map out what the threats will be exactly. because these roads have been treated, the major interstates and the major highways, those will be fine, even the secondary roads won't be too bad. probably will just get out of your apartment or house, certainly the lower or secondary roads will be the big issue. our ice threat will be until the afternoon and after that we change to rain and it could be a lot coming our way. steve will be back with that in a few minutes. >> thanks so much, john. >> the last 3 hours, charlotte-mecklenburg schools will operate on a normal schedule tomorrow. >> if that changes they will let parents and student comboez by 5:00 a.m.-- know by 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. delayed, they are scrolling at the bottom of the screen right now and also posted on wsoctv.com. in just the last ninety minutes shaur dot crews hit the roads to get them ready for the snow and ice. >> as eens news reporter, deshawn brown reports they will be out to make your morning drive a safe one. >> reporter: in the last 15 minutes i watched as at least 4 of the trucks hit the roads already. if you look behind me you can see an additional 3 trucks still there getting ready to get loaded up with salt and the plan is to send out 32 truck throughout charlotte, those crews work through the night to make sure the roads areied frethe morning-- are ready for the morning drive. >> regular rock salt. >> the next 12 hours, the first round of charlotte crews will lay 250 pounds of salt per lane per miles. >> whatever you get, you have to throw the salt at it. here, crews filed in just after 9:00 sunday, loading up to head out. they will put down brine and salt, starting with city streets that need it most like major roadways, connector streets, and bus routes. >> trucks are out the whole time. trucks don't stay in the yard. they are out moving around and checking routes. >> the check list for charlotte crews falls under condition b, that means 12-hour shifts, 64 field staff and 32 trucks. in the morning, new crews will file in and could apply more salt. it is the main ingredient to break down one of their toughest challenges yet. >> ice is the hardest thing to have to deal with and you can't melt ice. >> crews say they are equipped to handle it. >> they are highly trained, know the work and they will get out and get at it. >> reporter: city officials say there something you can do to if you see the trucks in the morning or through the night, they ask you give them extra room to work and gefb celebrate valentine's day. >> eyewitness news reporter elsa gillis spoke to people out in the freezing temperatures. >> reporter: valentine's day is a big day to go to dinner, movies, and enjoy the city. while many didn't late the cold weather get in way of their plans they could not ignore the dramatic dip in temperatures. >> i am ready to go inside the restaurant y. am freezing. >> it is cold out here. are you cold? >> yeah. really cold. >> freezing. they were bundled up today, experiencing true winter weather; something some aren't used to. get something eat and plan to go to marshals to find a coat. >> one group who will need a coat is valet attendants. towards the end of the night it will get really cold. got hand warmers. >> many restaurants were fully books so the frigid temperatures didn't impact holiday plans. >> had to dress with 2 tights instead of one pair. >> bundle up and dress in layers to stay warm. >> reporter: while most restaurants i spoke with hay say didn't have cancellations because of the cold weather, one hostess did say they did have cancellations from people coming in from the mountains as they have already gotten some snow. reporting in tennessee could get up to 6 inches of snow. much of the northeast woke up to record-freezing temperatures today. city and - 9 in boston. parts of vermont came in at - 19. charlotte-mecklenburg activated the snow teams to prepare for the winter weather. american airlines officials say they are expecting a major impact tomorrow morning. there are dozens of deicing trucks ready to go but officials expect delays and canc lags add the airport. they suggest travelers check with the airline before leaving. our team of meteorologists will be in severe weather 9 tracking the storm a house fire on 21st in long view. >> the longview and hickory fire department are responding, the call came 10:20 tonight. we are asking if the fire is fully involved and if anyone is north carolina highway patrol is investigating a deadly crash, lisa crossed the center line, side swiped a car and hit another head on. she died at the scene. one other person has injuries that are not life threatening. new at 11:00, 3 people are charged with robbing a woman at her home, while her children stood next to her. our partners report these 3 broke into the home friday night. they used force and violence to rob the woman. they took 2 phones, no word on the victim's injuries. tomorrow a former lincolnton assistant fire chief accused of embezzling money from a fund for burned children is due in court. investigators say bill fortenberry was stealing money for 5 years before caught last year. the burned children's fund tipped off police after the found discrepancies in the bank account. republican presidential candidate marco rubio will be in rock hill tomorrow for a town hall starting 8:00 at the baxter hood center. rubio is third in the polls in south carolina behind trump and ted cruz. the primary is saturday. ben carson was in fort mill, he had a speaking engagement at morning star ministries. we are hearing from someone infect would the quickly-spreading zika virus, doctors reported 20 cases in 8 counties in florida creating a state health emergency, kristof is a medical student infect would the virus linked to birth defects and paralysis in adults. while on a mission in robbery at first citizen's bank and linked him to a robbery on mallard creek road last week. they arrested him during a traffic stop friday. the red cross is helping a family after an overnight fire damaged their east charlotte home. it happened on parsons street 12:30, charlotte firefighters say it was an electrical fire that started in the basement and moved to a back bedroom. a couple and dog got out safely. >> i am very shaken up. i am very nervous but i know that god by my side. and i hope it never happens to anybody else. >> the fire kautzed 15 thousand-- costs $15,000 in damage. law enforcement officials say an 11-year-old boy has been shot in wait county, you can see crime scene tape around the home in these pictures. we are working to find how the child is doing. police are investigating what led up to the shooting. the north carolina supreme court will hear arguments over a state law that critics say takes away teacher job protections, they will determine whether it lines. tomorrow lawmakers will hold multiple public hearings, including one in charlotte regarding the redistricting case. last week a panel ruled district 12 is drawn based on race and unconstitutional. it said the march 15 primaries should not go forward until the cay could be appeal-- case could be appealed. central piedmont, and if campus is closed the hearing will be canceled. some drivers in york county tomorrow will have to find a route as dot crews replace a bridge over allison creek. lincoln road will be closed through early september. drivers will be directed to use instead. we are following the winter storm. >> chief meteorologist steve udelson is tracking when this wintery mix will move into your neighborhood. >> it is a little ways ow, the storm, leading edge of the precipitation reaching the ground 200 miles west of charlotte. the first batch is around the time we get up tomorrow morning, 6:00-9:00 a.m., upper 30s to 20s to 30. what is falling from the sky will be freezing rain. the big question is, and our futurecast has been hinting at it the last several hours, is falling at that point because the air is so dry. 29 belmont. university city, charlotte, 29 in matthews but notice as you start moving north the cold air entrenched, hickory, low 20s. teens up across the high country. here is tomorrow's futurecast, i showed you through the morning drive, pretty much through lunchtime, patches of freezing rain is all we will see over most of the area. the mountains see patches of sleet and snow as you move through the late afternoon, things pick up a little and into tomorrow evening. as far as snowfall, this will boent a big storm by any stretch. few flakes in the charlotte area, maybe a coating from hickory up towards troutman and statesville, towards hickory and lenoir, on up towards the high country, 2 to as much as 5 inches of snow will fall. the mountains entrenched in the colder air. freezing rain, the last thing we we won't necessarily see a lot. charlotte south, a few hundredths of an inch. more as we hit the high country. to put this into perspective. the big storm in late january, we had 1/3 inch of freezing rain. this was not going to be that bad but it doesn't take much. for more on what to expect temperature wise and as far as the change over, lets head to john ahrens outside. >> reporter: steve, the changeover, the impact of the storm depends how long the cold air stays in place and it will be a cold air trap. if you look above the skyline, we will be watching a thousand feet up, warmer air trying to move through, but down close to cold. i am looking at the weather app, app. warm air above the cold, it is tough to get out of that, so we stay with the subfreezing temperatures, well into the that is why the freezing rain threat will still be high. what is working in our favor is yet. but we could see that right, right? >> we are, the good news is the bulk of the storm will fall when it is above freezing. look how much precipitation, up wards of inch of rain in charlotte, even more along the highway 52 corridor and inch of rain, sleet, freezing rain, and snow, the whole winter deal in the high country. this time tomorrow night the rain picks up mountains charlotte area, continue tuesday. late tuesday afternoon, second batch swings into the mountains that will start as rain, maybe a few wet snowflakes and tuesday mng, a few leftover showers a-- evening, a few leftover showers. mid to upper 50s starting tuesday and we stay there the balance of the week. it gets better. tomorrow, highs barely freezing, mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, eventually the mountains, changes to all rain. hickory, con over, troutman, statesville, high 30s. it will take until the afternoon to get that warm. you see more freezing rain. charlotte area upper 30s. tomorrow night temperatures rise a lot more and across the midlands, very little if any icing with temperatures around 40 degrees by late afternoon. 5-day forecast, we will stay in the 50s for the next few days after tomorrow, to about 60 as we head through late week and after tomorrow night we are done with anything falling from the sky for a while too. >> nothing to panic over, just to take it easy when you head out. >> right, but keep in mind, freezing rain, you don't see it. it looks wet, it would deeizey and
