monitored for the virus. including one person from dah cabarrus county. channel 9 is continuing to ask health officials for more information. we'll bring you updates today at 5:00. in the past hour, a former mecklenburg county employee who tried to have her ex-husband killed will spend a decade behind bars. eyewitness news reporter angela hong just stepped out of the courtroom for us where she heard from several people who asked the judge for leniency in this case. angela? >> reporter: there were several supporters there. she appeared before a judge wearing a burgundy suit and in braids. she expressed remorse and regret for what happened and what she did. davis was kicked of hiring hit those hit men were actually undercover police officers. now davis had a group of supporters who came to her sentencing today who served as character witnesses. they told the judge she was desperate and a mother trying to protect her daughter and keep her safe. she was going through a bitter custody battle with her ex- husband. the ex and the victim in this case spoke with us outside the courthousese he says he's happy with the sentence the judge handed down but he still prays for daughter's mother. >> well it's every night, the last thing i do is go into my child's bed room and pray for her mother with her. that's what i do. it's hard. >> more supporters and friends also talked about -- great actually wanted to carry out such a heinous crime. coming up on eyewitness news at 6:00, hear from davis' supporters who told us that she did not deserve the sentence she got. reporting live outside of the federal courthouse, angela hong, channel 9 eyewitness news. one person is dead after a car crashed into this house here in gaston county, it happened just in the last 90 minutes. ken lemon is on the scene on coster school road where investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong. >> witnesses say the driver never slowed down. never seemed to adjust his speed at all. as a matter of fact, you can see where the truck actually hit that tree before hitting that house. we got on the scene this morning and take a look at what we found. you see that truck actually push into the house. one elderly woman who is on oxygen was inside. she was not startled by this. she was asleep at the time. but there were witnesses who saw the car come blazing through one yard and sprague one woman rushed over to see if she could help. she was there as the man at the breath. >> i sat there and watched him for a couple minutes and me and another gentleman walked to the other side as he was pulling bricks off him to check on him and there was nothing you could do. >> reporter: the man's name hasn't been released but there may have been a medical condition that caused him to lose control and may have killed him before the accident. ken lemon, channel 9 eyewitness news. charlotte mecklenburg police chief is preparing to talk to city leaders about community safety experts. they'll go over statistics and what they're doing to lower homicides. this talk is ahead of budget discussions when the chief will request more officers on the streets. we'll be inside of the meeting to update you about the plan the chief will lay out, on eyewitness news at 5:00. federal agents at charlotte douglas airport uncovered a bag of cocaine hidden inside of a computer mouse. they posted this picture here of the drug. take a look. they say it was hidden inside the battery compartment in the wireless mouse. it happened sometime between february 5th and 11th. we're asking police if anyone had been arrested in this case. new at noon, firefighters at catawba county rescued a woman out of a car after a head-on crash south of claremont. the accident happened on bethany church road before 10:00. the highway patrol says the driver of an suv turned into the path of a car. firefighters rescued the 65- year-old woman who was trapped. medics rushed her to the hospital. and she's expected to recover. today two presidential hopefuls will be in the area trying to get voter support ahead of south carolina's primary this weekend. jeb bush will be in rock hill for a town hall. just about the same time, john kasich will hold a similar event in indian land. also attend a town hall that cnn is hosting in columbia with rival donald trump. meanwhile trump is calling a pole a total joke. it shows rival ted cruz in the lead. trump sent out these tweets saying the pole shows why the wall street journal is doing so badly and said the media only wants to focus on the phony pole and news anchor stephanie maxwell was inside the meck ed community meeting where group leaders tried to a lot of talk at this med ed community conversation about diversity. how to define diversity and its importance in education as the board makes decisions about student assignment for cms. mec ed's goal is to look at all perspectives so everyone in the community can make wise decisions for students. the editor of the african american news paper the charlotte post and the head of the latin american coalition and an integration supporter gave their viewpoints about their experiences with cms. one said education should be more habit grades and standardized testing but also diversity. we talked to a mom who years ago made sure her children were exposed to people of different backgrounds. >> cultural competence. to learn to understand people who are different from you. and work with folks who are different from you. and it's a skill we're not measuring in our schools. >> as you can see huge changes being right now north carolina lawmakers are holding an emergency session that could impact your vote next month. if they don't redraw districts, the congressional primary can't even happen. eyewitness news reporter jim bradley just stepped out of a special meeting in raleigh to break down the changes they're considering. >> the legislature wasn't supposed to go back into session until later this spring. the government asked for a special session to vote on redistricting maps that the federal judges said are unconstitutional and needed to be redrawn by tomorrow. the house and senate convened after 10:00 this morning but almost immediately went into recess to have further talks about the maps which made huge changes to congressional districts in north carolina. including the go that touch charlotte and its voters. the mass run constitution, the legislature was ordered to redraw them. it would create three safe districts for democratics. and ten for republicans. democratics i talked with today say republicans have the votes to pass what they want but they say the fight may not be over. >> if in fact it does not meet the requirements for the judges, then they'll draw them. i asked the other day just what the process was once it leaves us. if they're not happy with what's being done, then they'll draw them. >> so it appears as though this will be a two-day process. the senate will take up the issue of the redrawn maps while the house will be talking about dates for a primary election that may change because of the retroing of the maps. and tomorrow they'll swap topics and vote again. we'll have latest on eyewitness news today at 5:00. state republicans hope the their request to delay friday's deadline. but the supreme court is altering its schedule following the death of justice antonin skalia. the justices will not hold their scheduled closed door conference tomorrow. that means there will be no orders issued in 24 pending cases. it's not clear whether the redemocraticking case is one of those. new at noon, west charlotte high school has a new reason to show some pride. celebrated the ground breaking of a new football field. if carolina panthers donated $200,000 to renovate the track and the field. students say the new field will motivate them in games and in the classroom. >> once we see that we were like we all got to do good outside of school. >> the new field will be ready for the next football season. today on eyewitness news starting at 5:00, eyewitness news speaks to former players west charlotte coach mo collins about what this new field will bring to the community. a safety alert this midday, toyota is recalling more than 1 million suvs in the u.s. because seat belts may not work in a crash. it covers rav 4s from 2005 to 2014. and the rav 4 electric version from 2012 to 2014. the belts in the second row seats could be cut during a frontal crash and not protect passengers. dealers will be fixing those problems for free. we have lots of sunshine out there this midday. temperatures are coming up just a bit. still a little cool out there. keith monday has more on this. >> we're in the beginning stages of this warm up. it's going to get better as we head toward the weekend. speed way view shows a crystal clear sky. not a cloud to be found. we may find a couple fair weather clouds this afternoon. we're at 50 degrees. mid to upper 40s up north. a an east to northeast wind. the mountains will get warmer today. you're finally getting into around 40 degrees. we're making slow strides. everyone will warm up more into the weekend. this evening, picture perfect, we cool back in the low 40s by 11:00 tonight. and over night tonight the temperatures dip to around freezing. a couple degrees warmer than this morning. most of the 20s will be confined into the mountains only. a clear and chilly start to friday to wrap up the workweek. but we'll bounce the numbers more into tomorrow. a big weekend in baseball at unc charlotte. mary. outdoor plans should be great. we're going to be in the 60s if not close to 70 sunday. still going to talk about just the smallest chance late in the day sunday for a light shower. most of it looks west into the mountains and it looks light. but it's the beginning stages of more changes coming our way as we head into next week. may have sprinkles up there from time to time. but just at times, a mix of clouds and sunshine throughout the week. there. plans. to get out of the house and temperatures. because it's not just the rain chance that's building up next week. this is a map from the climate prediction center. it talks about probabilities of temperatures below average. we have a higher probability of temps going way below average again next week. we may not get out of the 40s for highs by tuesday and wednesday as another pocket of cool air is going to fill back in. not cold enough to bring us snow and ice concerns even for the mountains as we head to next week. looking ahead to rain chances and maybe some tail end snow but it looks like several days of rain in charlotte. use our weather app to keep you up to date with temperatures warming up through the weekend. through the weekend, keep an eye on the changing forecast as we head through early next week. the five-day forecast, the weekend is always in view, from 50s to 60s over the next couple days a spring preview for saturday and sunday. it may not be as sunny as today but it'll be nice. chance starting up. heavier down pours likely to come in as we a rare eye cancer in huntersville with possible connection to the campus at this high school. patients like to see environmental testing done here. cms refused access to the campus. we're asking why. has a phd but wouldn't say what. >> i have been studying this it may not have been eight year, nine years, or ten years but it has been long enough to i would say justify what i do. >> he's accused of taking $3,000 for treating a woman's stomach pain. >> accusations are merely accusations. and services, you have to define that. whether she paid for me to just show up, that's up to her. >> he told abc he has medical training from shadowing real doctors. he cut the interview short when abc said it seemed like he had been talking to a lawyer. he said he didn't appreciate the reporter's tone who was interviewing him. new at noon, the fcc passed new rules changing the way you get cable television. you can swap expensive cable boxes for cheaper devices and apps from companies like google and amazon. it will increase competition and lead to cheaper prices for you. billions from these rules. they say regulations would take too long and cost more. a filibuster to stop senators from voting on a roads bill could continue for days. senator tom davis took to the floor for hours last night. he doesn't support the bill that could raise taxes by more than $800 million. one proposal includes boosting the gas tax by 12 cents a gallon. other fees as well. while cutting the income tax. some south carolina drivers told us they'll support us if lawmakers are serious about the plan. >> if i knew for sure that's where the money would go, i would be good with it. but who knows where the money's really going to go. >> the issue of repairing roads really came to the forfront after october's historic floods. hundreds of roads and bridges were damaged across south carolina. it created a momentum to raise the gas tax to pay for the flood damage. but some lawmakers want to use the $1.2 billion surplus in the state budget to pay for the damage. alderman has fired the town administratorment we're following the story with our news partner at the morganton news harald. investigators say david got about four months of payroll advances without approval. they also say he forged an alderman's signature to get paid sick time. his attorneys say he plans to pay back the advanced pay. but he
