if you look at the car, that's a sheet of ice up here in troutman. that's the situation on the roads, the longer the time they have to ice over, the more of a danger certainly. up on i-77, we found wrecks all over the place between statesville and troutman. it's going to take a while for this to warm up and relieve the situation here. john ahrens, channel 9 eyewitness news. all right thank you. breaking news on i-485 in huntersville. all outer loop lanes near i-77 are closed after an eight- vehicle crash. these are the first live pictures. medic says the area is icy. some people still going fast. huntersville firefighters on the scene. one person was injured. we don't know how badly. in the last 20 minutes, crews reopened one lane of i-40 westbound in catawba county to let traffic through here. but then closed all lanes after two tractor trailers jackknifed here. one of the trucks went across the roadway. we brought you updates for the last hour tonight. it could be another hour before the lanes are back open. now to the south in the charlotte area where we're using storm cam. this showing you the conditions along independence boulevard right now. a live look as you can see, they're stopped there. traffic moving along those wet roads. but no ice that we're seeing in this area now. a last minute decision by charlotte mecklenburg schools to keep kids home today that caused headaches for parents who had to scramble to adjust. coming up, we'll dig deeper into the district's other options. only eyewitness news was there as federal agents raided this huntersville home. now we've uncovered claims that this man recruited people to file for phony car loans for a business that didn't exist. tonight we're back at his house demanding answers. >> i'm not saying that at all. >> investigators searched his home in august but only filed minor drug charges. reporter blake hanson just discovered a new federal investigation that includes some serious fraud allegations. blake? >> reporter: erica and scott i found these new accusations in a lawsuit filed last week. it mentioned thousands of dollars some seized during that august raid. the door frame is still busted outside stanley's huntersville home. after we knocked on the door, he came to talk with us and agreed to sit down. still fiery after the raid at his home. >> the government is coming in and seizing people's stuff and saying they're going to come in and do this stuff. but you don't have a valid search warrant. >> he claims there's nothing in the warrant saying what could be searched. but we were the first to tell them about a lawsuit the government filed. in it attorneys claim he ran bogus auto dealers that were involved in the scheme to that never occurred. thus getting thousands in fake loans. one example of a recruit, a person 85 or 86 years old in charlotte. several applied for loans through military banks. we asked him about the accusations. >> why not just answer the questions about the auto company? >> because there's no -- because i'm not -- there's no need for me to answer any questions about any of my personal business. >> you're saying you did nothing illegal. >> i'm not saying that at all. i'm saying them coming into my home and taking documents the only person proven to do something illegal is the government. >> reporter: there are no federal charges against him. just the accusations in this lawsuit. reporting live from the federal courthouse, blake hanson, channel 9 eyewitness news. blake, thank you, in the past 30 minutes, charlotte leaders started discussing some major developments that could bring hundreds of new homes and some serious headaches for neighbors. the developer that wants to build 450 apartments with retail space at park road and abby place in south charlotte. the charlotte zoning board will vote on a proposal for another 265 apartments in that same area. now people living nearby say they are worried that the area won't be able to handle all the new traffic. charlotte's d.o.t. says it has plans for new traffic lights and sidewalks in the area to help. we have a crew inside that zoning meeting right now, for you. look for our updates coming up tonight on eyewitness news at 10:00 and 11:00. in the race for the white house tonight, two of the republican candidates trying to stay toward the lead spent time campaigning in our local counties today. reporter greg suskin is live tonight with the message they're spreading five days before the south carolina primary, greg? and both marco rubio and ben carson will tell you that south carolina is very important to their campaign. when i pressed them about their chances here, both seem more state rather than winning it. in the line of people waiting for an early morning visit by marco rubio. supporters told me why he's their choice. >> he's calm. he's not the in your face type guy. >> others think he must get in voter's faces quickly if he's to do well here. >> it's absolutely critical for marco rubio. >> he spoke before a full house at 8:00 in the morning and took questions. he didn't mention his gop points but his president obama and democratic front runner hillary clinton. >> anyone who lies to the family of victims who have lost their lives in the service of our country the way she lied to the families in benghazi can never be commander in chief. >> dr. ben carson made a low key appearance touring a pet supplement manufacturing plant. he was at or near last place in the state. he told me he put little effort into new hampshire but will fight for south carolina. i asked if he'll quit if he doesn't finish strong here. social media group. and they still are supporting my campaign. if that stops, then i'll stop. >> for rubio, their support is growing, donald trump and texas senator ted cruz are still ahead going into saturday. i asked rubio if the palmetto state is a must win. >> we're not at the stage where any state is a must win. i think we have to do well here. and we're going to do very well here. >> after his appearance in lancaster he spoke at a christian school this afternoon. he'll be in rock hill on thursday night for a town hall meeting. live in rock hill, greg suskin, channel 9 eyewitness news. tonight at 6:00, voters packed into rooms like this one across the state today sharing their thoughts on the congressional district lines ruled racially biased and unconstitutional. this was earlier today at central piedmont community college. the meeting came as north carolina lawmakers wait to hear whether two controversial district lines will have to be redrawn. now some at the hearing are changed, voters will be lost. >> ramifications are unprecedented process. the rules have been followed. it's not about partisan politics at that point. the decision about whether the state will need to gather next week and redraw the lines is now in the hands of the u.s. supreme court. but justices are dealing with the death of their colleague, skalia, and tonight the team at world news is digging deeper into that debate brewing over his open seat. their coverage begins after eyewitness news at 6:00. new tonight, police are investigating five separate cases of travelers bringing guns to charlotte's airport this month alone. these are four of the five people facing charges for having a gun on city property. the most high profile case was last week when former chairman of the u.n.c board of governors was caught with a gun at airport security. he told channel 9 it was a mistake. while charlotte has been spared for much of today's reaches from texas to the tip of massachusetts has created some big problems certainly for travelers. in fact, at one point this morning, we counted more than 100 canceled flights in and outside of charlotte's airport. eyewitness news reporter angela hong spoke to travelers who were stuck and trying to find a way home. >> all day at charlotte douglas international airport red dominated the departures board. >> we found out our flight was canceled when we were in the parking lot. >> at one point, there were more than 115 canceled flights in and out of the airport. all thanks to a winter storm that hit the east coast. some passengers like jesse johnson of vancouver were stranded since sunday night. >> by the time i got here they were closing down all the terminals, making sure that everybody was coming back out that wasn't on a flight. >> and they tried to pass the time. some waiting several hours for their rebooked flights. many airlines like american waved their fees because of the storm. >> they got us on to another unfortunately it's six hours later than our other nights. >> passengers couldn't see why the charlotte flight was canceled. >> reporter: many departures in charlotte were effected by the fact that planes couldn't get here from weather impacted cities up north. if you look at the arrivals board there were planes canceled from savannah and philadelphia and indianapolis. passengers tired and frustrated tried to keep their chins up. >> whatever. it's an adventure. i'm keeping it positive. >> at charlotte douglas international airport, angela hong, channel 9 eyewitness news. well the roadways are quickly becoming an adventure in charlotte with some of that freezing rain. back to live pictures here, 485 near i-77. eight vehicles involved in a crash out here. one person we are told was hurt. but we don't know how badly. you can see traffic is at a stand still right there. tractor trailers and vehicles, a lot of people exiting here to avoid that. treat the roadways and presumably, it may have been treated before the freezing rain started to fall. we'll have a live update in a few minutes. unfortunately, freezing rain not the only issue. i'm tracking a batch of heavy rain and thunderstorms to the west. i'll show you if that will clear by the morning drive tomorrow. parents of cms students had to scramble to find child care after cms's last minute decision to cancel school after 5:00 this morning. so i spent three hours this morning calling, trying to find someone to watch my daughter. new at 6:00, we're the district ions (donkey sound) (elephant sound) there's a big difference between making noise, (tapping sound) and making sense. (elephant sound) (donkey sound) when it comes to social security, we need more than lip service. our next president needs a real plan to keep social security strong. (elephant noise) hey candidates. enough talk. gi steve says the temperature the 30-degree mark line will move north and everybody will get just rain eventually. now back to breaking news out of huntersville where an eight-vehicle crash is causing a traffic nightmare on the i- 485 outer loop. elsa gillis just arrived at the crash site where all the lanes are now closed near the i-77 bridge. what more can you tell us? >> a traffic nightmare, that's what this is. i'm going to step aside so you can take a look. traffic at a complete stand still. huntersville fire says this was a multicar wreck involving eight vehicles. only one person was injured. not life threatening injuries. they're hoping to get the road opened soon as law enforcement cleared the scene. last we heard they were waiting for law enforcement to come clear the scene, open the road back up. we see some vehicles down there. we're not sure how much longer it's going to be until they reopen the road. now huntersville fire says the road is okay right now. but we're hearing reports of icy conditions. so officials are reminding drivers to go slow and be careful. stay with us. we'll bring you the latest update when the roadways reopen. live in huntersville, channel 9 eyewitness news. cms schools were empty even though the freezing rain didn't move into the area until 4:00 this afternoon. >> earlier at 5:00, brittney johnson told you many parents were upset about the district's last minute cancellation. the other options cms had that might have given parents more time to adjust. >> reporter: that's right, the district can have a delayed start, an early release or they can close. and while we've had some freezing rain on and off this evening, earlier today, they were concerned that at some point throughout the school day, the roads leading up to schools could become too dangerous for students. if you're confused about why cms schools were canceled for a full day, you're not alone. many parents took to facebook to question the closure and why many parents were notified so late. >> it's a huge inconvenience. >> we learned district and county officials held a conference call at 4:30:00 a.m. they saw the possibility of winter weather midday and the superintendent made the call to close at 4:51:00 a.m. but what stopped them from choosing the early release option like they did in at that time, concerned about winter weather moving in, cms had school but sent kids home two hours early. cms explained why they shot down that option in a statement saying based on the forecasted projections for precipitation an early release would have occurred around the time of the precipitation. even though they made the call late, they want parents to know they closed to avoid putting students on the road in the middle of a possible storm. the district also has a two tier transportation system. they stagger the buses from different schools to get the kids home. and they do have to take that into consideration when trying to figure out if they can afford to get the kids out of here quickly in the case that bad weather rolls in. >> reporter: in north charlotte, brittney johnson, channel 9 warehouse. hundreds have been commenting on the district's late cancellation on our eyewitness news facebook page. conversation, search wsoc-tv and click the like button at the top of the page. it's starting to come to an end. the steadier precipitation through pineville and matthews. north through cabarrus county up highway 29 and 49. kannapolis to salisbury, light freezing rain, again, it's looking like it's plain old rain but it's freezing on contact. and now with the sun down, it's not much more difficult to discern which is which? is it wet or black ice? through mint hill, steele creek, pineville, light freezing rain also down toward lancaster. 30 in charlotte. we warmed to 31 university city, harrisburg, mint hill. ballantyne, and waxhaw. we're getting close. temperatures are all ready at freezing. chester on long highway 9 to lancaster and chesterfield. 20s are holding tough from shelby, lincolnton toward statesville. 20s and 30s across the high country. here's the latest future cast. freezing rain tonight. neighborhood by neighborhood, very little of anything charlotte and points south. north of i-85, you're running especially the foothills. i believe this will be the last area to warm up. morganton, hickory, con over, toward lenoir, boone, blowing rock, upwards of 2/10 of an inch of freezing rain. that could cause issues as well as this later on. the band of rain that will be pushing in. keep in mind, all night long, rising. midnight. what falls after that is all rain. and a lot of it across the mountains through midnight, charlotte area, by 3:00 or 4:00 tomorrow morning. and then for daybreak, first thing tomorrow morning, keith monday will track the back edge of it as it's on its way out. tomorrow morning, look how much we warm up. mid to upper 40s in charlotte. 50 plus southeast of town. 30s across the high country. our future cast suggests the sunshine is back for a good partly of tomorrow. it should be a very nice day. shoulder to the left, off to the west, clouds are increasing, another batch of rain will be rolling in. i'll talk about that in a minute. temperatures start? the 40s. they rise in the 50s tomorrow afternoon. i wouldn't be surprised to find south carolina midlands close to 60s. winds will be up. changing direction. blowing out of the west. blowing the moisture out of here. the winds subside in the afternoon tomorrow. this time tomorrow night, more rain will roll toward the mountains and it'll be just rain. a few wet snow flakes way up high. in the charlotte area, can't rule out showers while we sleep tuesday night. gone by wednesday morning. then we get the sunshine back wednesday afternoon. it sticks around and so does the warmth. some good news. upper 50s to near 60 through friday. and into the 60s as we head into next weekend. but we have to deal with tonight. it'll be rough in the mountains. tomorrow we get the sunshine back, windy conditions, upper 30s. up to the i-40 corridor, no problems other than a breeze. same story in the charlotte area. some morning clouds. we get the sun back. we're in the upper 50s. my five-day forecast, takes us through the 50s through friday. we keep the sunshine around over the weekend, we warm into the 60s. there maybe a few showers on sunday. but that's sunday. >> we'll worry about that when we get there. >> burke county schools are on a two hour delay tomorrow. >> there maybe more over the foothills. wall street was closed today in observance of the charlotte knights introduce their new manager for the 2016 season. he's spent the past five seasons with the chicago white sox organization. he was with the double a birmingham barons for the last three season. he spent a season in winston salem and kannapolis. he describes himself as a aggressive from calling hit and runs to defending his players. >> it's probably the spanish side of me. you'll see me battling for the guys, i fight for our players, you might see me get tossed. it's nothing personal. it's how it is. >> unless you were in toronto, you missed the all-stars dribbling out the clock, the cameras focused on kobe bryant, this is what the tell cast showed. waiting for kobe's reaction. waiting to see the shot go through the net. instead of dribbling out the look, it's the all-star game after all. steph pulls up and hits. after the game, curry said he was trying to send the fans home happy. >> thankfully it went in. it finished the game off with a bang and caused some excitement. >> all right we go back now to breaking news. still at a stand still near the i-77 bridge right here. one person was hurt in an eight-car wreck. medic saying it's icy in the area. our crews on the scene say they just saw a few snow flakes as well. troopers are working to reopen this roadway as soon as possible. what's falling as freezing rain now goes to all rain as the next batch rolls in after midnight. >> caldwell county schools are on a three-hour delay steve: today is your lucky day. woman: (surprised) oh, my goodness woman: that'amazing! that' amazing!
