>> i just thank my stars. it didn't come any closer. rancheros ma >> reporter: many neighbors were not as lucky. in a matter of hour the fire burned 15 1/2 square miles of land 90 miles east of los angeles. drought conditions and hot temperatures made for a dangerous fire season in the western u.s. the flames spread so quickly here, residents say they had just minutes to evacuate. the fire even blocked an evacuation road, trapping rescuers for a time. everyone made it out. >> we are watching stuff exploden front of our faces. >> five people injured so far. four of them fire fighters. and even with more than 1,000 people, battling the blaze on the ground, and in the air, it is still just 10% contained. and for one family, this is all that's left. this porch and basically the shell of a roof. the real hot spot out here has been that plume of smoke blowing all day. and the ferocious wind. a fire fighter lent me his wind detector, we have seen wind, 22 miles an hour. at 19 right now.
