due to several recent reports of suspicious men approaching children. news4's derrick ward is live on north stafford street in arlington where the most vent incident took place. derrick? >> reporter: indeed, it was about a week ago when one of these incidents happened here. and there are enough similarities familiar to the three incidents that happened before that police are stepping up their patrols. the very first incident happened on april 7th including the 5200 block of eighth road south. 12 days later you hit another one on the 5200 block of 30th street north. now what are the similarities? the children who were approached in both of these cases tried to get them to go with him. they we one was on april 23 and one that happened a week ago on april 25th in the 2500 block of north stafford. again, the children were walking along when someone tried to get them to go with them. in one of the incidents, the suspect was seen driving away in a dark colored sedan. but the similarities are enough that police are stepping up patrols and want folks to be on aware this is happening. there's no definitive link among the cases but many similarities that they want to be safe rather than sorry later. derrick ward, news4. thank you. 6:02 and developing right now, a shooting investigation underway in prince george's county happening at 9:00 on kayak avenue at capitol heights. one man was dead at the scene there. no word just yet on a suspect. and today three men will be arraigned for the deadly shooting of an american university graduate. matthew shlonski was shot outside the shaw-howard last august. three men are charged in his death. and residents are on edge after a series of break-ins. someone has been burglarizing the avant apartmentson patry yoth drive. they believe the suspect lives or works in the area and is not using force to get in. the break-s in are happening between 8:00 and 10:00 in the morning. if you have any information, contact police. and new details in a story that is sparking a conversation on our facebook page. it's kennel in prince george's county fired an employee after a dog died. the, a xi says the employee violated public policy when the dog was left overnight in the pen. the dog escaped and was later found dead. the kennel took full responsibility and said in part, quote, all vet bills were imminently paid by us and we are deeply saddened by this event. good morning, i'm angie goff here at the live desk. more severe weather striking texas right now. flash flood watch is in effect in the northern part of the state through tomorrow. you're looking at the major flooding that we got that was pretty widespread near austin. now it was so powerful that it swept vehicles away like they were toy cars. we know that nine people have died in these storms including a 10-year-old boy who fell into a rising river. more rounds of storms on the way. some areas could get more than 6 inches of ran by frichday. i'm angie goff live at the news desk. back to you. 30,000 verizon workers are on the ticket line but will be back to work today. they reached a deal to give workers an 11% raise over four years and adds 1,300 new call center jobs. workers have been on strike since april and will vote on the agreement after getting back to work. today teen drinking is casting a shadow over a local high school graduation. parents are upset that seniors at bethesda chevy chase high school are allowed to walk across the stage after showing up at the prom drunk. the principal at the school told the students they would not be allowed to walk. parents say this sends the wrong message to students. >> i don't think the superintendent should have cut the principal off at the knees. not only the principal who fought long and bad. aaron and eun, back to you. >> jack taylor in for melissa, thank you. a high-profile sex assault and child pornography case is leading to changes in prince george's county our bureau chief tracee wilkins has more. >> reporter: after waiting, it is now clear what the school system is going to do to protect its students after a student aid is accused of sexually assaulting 20 kids at his school. they released the findings of a student aid task force that was led by darlene duke. the task force has a mission to figure out how to shore up what prince george's county has in place in terms of safety to create something new. we know now the school system will immediately act to start an accountability office that will answ to the ceo of the prince george's county school system. they will also start a new curriculum teaching students from pre-k to 12th grade how to save themselves and protect themselves from sexual abuse. hear now from the ceo school system. >> it is not necessarily not having procedures, it's implementation. it's not not having policies necessarily but are they being implemented appropriately. >> reporter: while the task force did a lot of work, they did not interview anyone associated with the case. this was the case that spawned the task force. in upper marlboro, tracee wilkins, news4. and new fallout in the story that people can't stop talking about. the cincinnati zoo now says it will consider reinforcing the bar yeriers around a gorilla exhibit. the boy fell into the enclosure on saturday and was dragged by the gorilla. a trained response team shot and killed the gorilla. the zoo's director said the breach the enclosure's first since opening in 1978. and a 19-year-old who fell from a rope swing into shallow waters is recovering from serious injuries this morning. the exact accident is what people subdivision have been warning people about for years. teenagers have been trespassing through the neighborhood to use the rope to plunge into goose creek. >> kids are having a great time but we all know it's just a matter of time before something bad happens and unfortunately yesterday it did. >> and neighbors hope this accident brings some changes. they want more patrols and cameras install in the area and they want the rope to be cut down. and d.c. council members are set to vote on a revised minimum wage bill that would have less dramatic impact on city restaurants than the original proposal. mayor muriel bowser would raise the wage to $5.50 for those who earn their salary through tips. that's currently double the salary for tip workers. this calls for a wage of $7.50 before tips. and now a baby born with a zika-related birth defect in new jersey at the hackensack medical center has low the 30-year-old mother is from honduras in the u.s. on a visit. she contracted zika from a mosquito bite in honduras. the world health organization issued new guidelines to prevent the sexual transmission of the zika virus. couples planning a pregnancy should wait eight weeks before trying to conceive if they live in a zika-infected area or are returning from such an area. the guidelines also suggest men and women returning from the infected area adopt safer sex practices or consider abstinence for eight weeks. this is twice as long as previously recommended. check your pantries this morning, general mills is voluntarily recalling several brands of flour due to a possible e. coli contamination. the outbreak may be linked to gold medal, wondra and signature kitchens flour. the cdc found half of those with the illness reported making something with flour before they got sick. e. coli has not been found in any general mills products or in facility. happening today it's the official start of the 2016 hurricane season. the season already getting off to a fast start with hurricane alex in january and tropical storm bonnie making landfall in south carolina over the weekend. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein has more on what we can expect for the hurricane season ahead. good morning. good morning. we are transitioning from the el nino pattern to the la nina pattern. so we'll have an average type of hurricane season. here's the 2016 hurricane season outlook. the number of named storms are between 10 and 16. 4 to 8 of them hurricanes. and 1 to 4 of those could be major hurricanes. now, the peak season for us is usually late august into mid-september. we'll be here, storm team 4 will be tracking them and keeping you fully informed as the 2016 hurricane season gets underway. chuck is back here going for a job, whatever you are going to do. cooperative weather from mother nature outside this morning from the tower. this little sea of fog is hanging right over the potomac river as it winds northwestward from washington out to the potomac and great falls. here's tyson's corner in the distance, the early morning river crossings could be a little on the fogged in side. but the thickest fog in prince george's county. manassas is a quarter mile visibility at the airport. seven miles of visibility in frederick. the rain chances to our west and rain to our south, i think we don't need to worry at all about rain today. there could be a wait you are shower around west virginia and that's it. this was tropical storm bonnie. the circulation lives on and the rain chances continue along the outer banks and the southeast coast of north carolina. but that is we are in the 60s to near 70 out the door. it will be a quick warm up with temperatures in the mid-80s noontime and hovering in the mid-80s for most of the day. 83 is the forecast in gaithersburg and forecasting an 87 on the national mall. even out to the shenandoah valley, temperatures will be warm in the mid-80s. what about tomorrow? it looks almost as nice as today but there will be a little better chance for a thundershower tomorrow. officially they are putting a 30% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow late afternoon into evening hours. not a cancellable amount of showers tomorrow. 82 tomorrow, 83 on friday. friday is the best chance for rain between now and the weekend. the weekend looks on the whole pretty good on saturday. mostly sunny. temperatures in the mid-80s on saturday afternoon. sunday, a pretty food chance for showers coming back with another weather front coming by. that should clean us monday and tuesday, plenty of sunshine with temperatures at or slightly cooler than average. we love cooler than average weather especially in the summer months, which it is june 1st. now back to the news with and tyler elementary both in gainesville. police say one bear tried to paw its way into a car because it thought it was a twinkie. do you remember that commercial? that didn't really happen in prince william. this is in the tyler parking lot of the car. both police and animal control officers were on the scene. nobody got hurt. >> be careful. 6:24 and distracted driving. you want to hear the brand new numbers about hucow often teenagers are texting behind the wheel. this comes from aaa and just released. 15% of the time teens crash they are other passengers. they are texting or using a cell phone in 12% of those crashes. and 11% they are looking at something else inside the car. anything can be a distraction when you're changing the radio, looking in the trunk. what aaa called the 100 deadliest days just started after memorial day when there's a big increase in the number of teen deaths in car crashes. >> and aaa puts out a list of recommendations and they rate things on whether they follow the recommendations and laws enforced. but d.c. says the only place in our area that follows teen drivers is here in the u.s. and more than 600 local nonprofits participating in a program called do more 24 tomorrow are all hoping you'll consider donating to their efforts. the one-day fund-raising drive is put on by the united way but many organizations are pati 24 is the largest giving start to increase a little bit later on in the week, as will rain chances. looks like the best chance for rain between now and the weekend will be coming on friday. i'm optimistic that the weekend will at least start on a dry note. so for now, hazy sunshine out there. the sun came up at 5:45 this morning. we're at 63 now at dulles international airport. temperatures will be back up into the authorities arrived on the scene, they have moved it to 29 south right at the split. it is on the shoulder at this point. and better news on the red line, we are back to normal service near the medical center. we are in decent shape with normal service resuming on the metro red line. thank you, jack. today leaders will gather in downtown washington to figure out how to end homelessness among veterans. terry mccullough will be there with opening remarks today. let's go to krist has been so effective in addressing the problem of homelessness among the vets. the national coalition for homeless veterans posting the three-day conference said last year virginia reached functional zero. that doesn't mean there are no homeless veterans in virginia. it means that the commonwealth has a solid system and processes in place to immediately house veterans who seek help. 600 service providers and advocates will be at the conference to talk about ways to achieve that functional zero status nationwide as part of a five-year plan with a focus on policy, jobs and housing. vietnam vet thomas ferguson was living in his truck until he got help from d.c.-based nonprofit friendship place. he just moved in to a one-bedroom in district heights, marylandand he's getting back on his feet. we asked mr. ferguson if there's enough help for veterans. here's what he come in from all kinds of wars. but i think they are doing the best they can, though. >> reporter: and one in ten homeless people out on the street is a veteran. back to you. >> kristin, thank you. 6:33 right now. a woman accused of making more than a million dollars by effectively scamming department stores will be in court. the woman is living in arlington on a student visa from china. prosecutors say she ripped off high-end department stores by buying handbags worth thousands of dollars and then returning fake handbags and selling the real ones online. she's now in jail charged with wire fraud. d.c. police are searching for two more suspects involve in a violent robbery near the tenleytown metro station. two men tried to blend in with wilson high school students. they say four young men robbed someone at knife point near the identify the suspects. commuters along one of the busiest roads are bracing for a change. the transportation planners want to eliminate left turns on part of route 123 near tysons. here's how it may help keep traffic flowing with adam tuss. >> reporter: anything to help road congestion is a good thing, but eliminating left-hand turns altogether is something being considered along super busy 123. as a matter of fact, they want to turn this stretch here into what is known as a super street. basically eliminating a lot of the conflict points where you would make a left-hand turn so traffic could just continue to flow. but not everyone is sold on the idea. >> i'm not in favor of that. >> reporter: why? you need to make a left? >> you need to make a left. >> reporter: this idea is something to take a little more fairfax county planners say something has to change here and it looks like that is coming. in tysons, adam tuss for news4. we have a major update to the story about the fight over bathrooms in virginia schools. you are looking at the student that the school board wouldn't allow to use the bathroom to match his gender identity. last month the court said the school violated federal law. yesterday the full circuit of appeals in richmond refused the case. that means the school board could take this to the supreme court next. we'll let you know if that happens. a maryland beer company now says it is creating a nonprofit to advocate for free speech. this comes after a six-year plight about the name of one of their beers. they make a beer that includes a five-letter word we can't say on tv. michigan regulators say they could not sell it because of that name but an appeals court disagreed and awarded the company >> this is the first major decision at the federal level to get attention. >> the court said that flying dog's free speech rights were violated. the race for the white house may be expanding. a look at the man who may enter the race as an bridge. all traffic is moving on dry pavement this morning. at the bus stop and waiting for the metro, you'll be comfortable in short sleeves. we'll be in the upper 60s to near 70. a lot of sun. then by recess time for the students at recess, it will be warm in the low 80s. and by dismissal time mid-afternoon, sunshine in the mid-80s. chuck is back with a look at the weekend coming up in a few minutes. jack is looking at traffic this morning. well, live from newschopper 4 flying out on 66. we had a crash at 123. everything was put on the shoulder and vdot was last to leave. there's nothing in the way but beautiful sunshine. we'll find it slow on and off to manassas and heading to oakland. on 270 southbound near falls road, we have an accident there or a vehicle that has broken down. we ago kids were walking down the street and the guy tried to get them in his car. that was according to police and he started to compare this to three incidents that happened earlier. they say, you know what? there are a lot of similarities here and they are letting the public know and are stepping up their patrols. the first incident was april 7 in the 5200 block of 8th road south. 12 days later t block of 30th street north. in both cases, the person who tried to force someone or at least entice them into their car seemed to be driving away in a dark-colored pickup. a couple of incidents were a dark-colored sedan. one on april 23rd and this one here again on april 25th in the 1300 block of north safford. the one on the 23rd was in the 200 block of north park drive. the bottom line is that there are enough similarities here among the vehicles that the suspect was in, the way these things happened and the time of day they happened and even what vague suspect description they have. police are stepping up patrols. these kids did the right thing getting to a place where they felt safe and are warning people to be on the lookout for this incident. we are live, i'm derrick ward for news4. background, but he doesn't have money or name recognition. that makes it a long shot to take on trump. trump takes on the media, his fellow republicans in the fiery news conference. he's heading to temperatures running a smidgen above average. only 5 degrees or so warmer than average this afternoon. only one or two widely scattered isolated showers this afternoon, mainly out to the mountains of west virginia. so the impact the weather will have on the outdoor plans, no worries today. tomorrow not much of an issue with rain chances around 30%. but friday, showers and thundershowers looking a bit more likely. so friday night you've had outdoor plans and may need to have a tent or backup plan ready for friday night. 63 in culpeper and manassas. temperaturewise the next couple of hours will be up into the low 70s here by 8:00 this morning. 80 degrees or better before lunchtime. and afternoon 83 in gaithersburg. travel today, showers and thundershowers are the next real weather change out across parts of the upper midwest. this is still what is left of bonnie showing signs now of going back on out to sea and leaving us alone. so that is welcomed news. future weather then nothing to worry about today. there's the little isolated chance of a shower in the mountains of west virginia this afternoon. clear skies and drying out overnight. then into the day tomorrow, a better chance with a 30% chance on the seven-day for tomorrow. but most of the rain chances should be west of the metro. here is friday's future weather. notice between noontime and 6:00, pretty high likelihood of showers and thunderstorms coming our way. so keep in mind for your friday night plans. the seven-day forecast, 87 today. 82 tomorrow. a little better chance for some showers around tomorrow. and again on friday. most of your outdoor plans on saturday look great. but sunday does come back with another chance for some hit and miss rain drops. that's never a good weekend. now to jack taylor at the
