today, nothing to worry about. sunny and hot and, you know, we're stuck at work. that's the worst i can come up with. >> thank you, chuck. we are tracking breaking news in prince george's county. we are working to find out what has so many police on temple hills. molette green, what can you tell us? >> reporter: not a whole lot at this point. just that we know that there is one person here dead at the scene. we're at the princess estate apartments here in temple hills, maryland, not too far from st. barnabas road. let me show you what we're seeing right now. there's still evidence tape up and crime scene investigators working this scene. we can't tell you how this person died, what the circumstances were, whether this was a shooting or a stabbing or a combination of the two. i had a chance to talk to briefly some of the people who live in this apartment community. and they told me that they didn't hear anything in the overnight hours. so i am still working this scene. it is still very active. lots of police here on the scene working this. still unclear if there were any suspects or a lookout for suspects at this time. but we're continuing to stay on top of this developing story throughout the morning and as soon as we know more, we'll bring it right to you. reporting live from prince george's county in temple hills, i'm molette green. back to you. >> thank you. another homicide investigation is developing this morning. this time in southeast washington. we promised we would follow up on the body police found in this burned out car. it belongs to a man and he had at least one gunshot wound. investigators first went to the scene on xenia street about a car on fire. they're working to find out more about the victim and the time lines of the events. a woman killed as she waited for a bus in springfield. the driver is suspected of drinking. we spoke to the victim's husband who said he lost his best friend. >> i'm sorry. >> reporter: abraham is grieving after his wife was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver as she waited for a bus half a mile from their springfield home. >> just kindness. >> reporter: fairfax county police have charged this fredericksburg man, 22-year-old corey english with driving while intoxicated. they believe speed and alcohol were factors when he lost control of his acura on old keene mill road. here at the scene, you can see the path that that car took literally mowing down the bus stop sign where the victim was standing. she was just a ten minute walk away from home. her husband says she was waiting for a bus to go to work, just before 3:00 in the afternoon. and that she was a student at george mason university. just a semester short of graduation. >> she had been quiet, careful and a great student at george mason university. trying to make the ends meet. >> akula, a d.c. cab driver, has had a lot of financial challenges and health problems and he says his wife was everything. >> i don't know how to live my future life without her. >> reporter: for neighbors its brought bam painful memories of when a well loved pediatrician, dr. sullivan, was struck at the same intersection. drivers are going way too fast here and want police to do more to slow them down. darcy spencer, news4. we are working to find out how loudoun county will replace supervisor shawn williams. he resigned hours after he was arrested for assaulting a neighbor in ashburn. a dispute broke out after a block party where williams lives. the sheriff's office fays williams forced his way into a neighbor's house and then pushed a man during an argument. williams resigned via text message to board chairman scott york. >> a lot of us have been worried about shawn for a long time. by stepping down, he's taken the right step, the first step to getting the help that he needs and i just wish him and his family the best. >> this is not shawn williams' first run-in with the law. he withdrew from the race from board chairman. he admitted to having several drunk driving and domestic disputes. one of the more serious charges came in 2006 when he was accused of beating up his girlfriend in his grandmother's ocean city condo. williams assaulted the woman after becoming suspicious when another man called her cell phone. the charges in that case were dismissed. it is to be a day to relax, but why more and more of you are spending the day at the office. those of you who did get out of town are probably up and getting ready to make that drive home. a live look at the bay bridge for you here which will be the road today. he's heading to a parade in pennsylvania. sick leave and similar policies are expecting to be a rallying point for democrats into the election year. if you're working this labor day, you are not alone. dedicated to american workers, nearly half find themselves heading in to work. bloomberg bna did a nationwide survey, found that 41% of employers require people to work on labor day. among those clocking in today are emergency health care workers and security guards. most of you working in restaurants are also probably heading in to work also today. >> it makes sense. it's bay bridge. tough to see there. but not many cars on the road right now. the scene was a lot different on saturday though. a power outage caused ten mile backups. well, thousands will be heading back home from their holiday weekends today. the last way you want to end it is sitting in some traffic. kristin wright has more tips on avoiding that traffic. how are thing looking right now, kristin? >> reporter: they're fine right now because it's so early in the morning, but 95 here is going to look absolutely nothing like this as a lot of people pack really every major highway in our area to get back home. aaa estimates about 800,000 people in our area alone are traveling this labor day weekend. most of them by car. so take a look here. we want to show you the top three bottleneck spots in our area. first is 95 north between d.c. and baltimore. also the beltway at the 270 split. and then 95 south down to fredericksburg. so no surprise to anyone who lives here today, but also not the kind of situation you want to be in after a nice holiday weekend. so the big thing you want to do is leave early or leave late. those are the best two options that will get you home in a decent amount of time. we have two pieces of good news. those are that gas prices are lower than they were this time last year. and also that most jurisdictions have suspended road work just to get people a little police officer was shot and killed nearly a week ago and he'll be laid to rest today. lieutenant joe gliniewicz was killed while chasing three suspects -- suspicious men in fox lake. there's a public funeral this morning at gliniewicz's hometown high school, then mourners will line the streets for a procession through town. passing the department where he worked for more than 30 years. >> there can't be enough support for our men and women in blue right now, it's a tough time for their families. >> fantastic family and anybody who contributes to protect and serve this community, i'm sorry, i couldn't do his job. >> lieutenant gliniewicz was a father of four boys. police are still tracking down leads trying to find those plea suspects. tragedy in ocean city during this holiday weekend. an 8-year-old girl drowned. city officials say she was swimming with friends in shallow water when she was hit by a big wave. the girl was overcome and pulled into the inlet waters. a police boat found her a quarter mile off shore and she died at the hospital. the minnesota dentist who shot and killed a beloved lion will head back to work. now, during an interview with the a.p. a.p., palmer said he acted legally and had no idea the lion was one of the treasured animals in zimbabwe. zimbabwe said they were going to extradite him. he'll be back to work tomorrow. the kentucky county clerk jailed for refusing to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples now awaiting a ruling on her appeal. lawyers for rowan county clerk kim davis filed that appeal yesterday. tomorrow, a crowd is expected to rally in support of davis when republican presidential candidate mike huckabee visits her. granting a same-sex license would violate her faith she said. a fire may have been a lot worse if the building was sopts close to the -- wasn't so close to the fire department. firefighters arrived in seconds to the condo's on wyndham way yesterday morning. even with the fast response its took 75 firefighters around an hour to get all the flames under control. two residents had minor injuries and one firefighter did have minor burns. 5:21. if you have been upset at your son or daughter for shakeups from the rise of donald trump to the struggles of hillary clinton and jeb bush. now labor day kicks off the fall campaign season and nbc news has a new poll. nbc's tracie potts has the latest numbers. >> reporter: good morning. let's focus on new hampshire, because that's where donald trump has a new number two coming up right behind him, although not that close. it's hillary clinton, who has lost her lead in new hampshire. our new nbc maris poll shows hillary clinton's negative numbers up in iowa and new hampshire. she's still leading iowa, but in new hampshire senator sanders has a nine-point lead even if vice president biden joins the race. >> don't tell anybody i think they're getting nesh vous. don't tell anybody. >> reporter: donald trump still has solid leads in both states. in new hampshire his closest competitor is now john kasich. >> they're going to want somebody who can actually get the job done. >> reporter: kasich, carly fiorina and lindsey graham will be at a picnic today. marco rubio and rick santorum will be in south carolina today, but the big story remains hillary clinton and her dwindling lead. >> this is one of the most important elections that we have had in a really long time. >> reporter: some supporters are concerned about her e-mails. >> there's just a lot of unanswered questions right now. >> i think it's been blown out of proportion. >> takes a lot of work to install a private server system in your basement. >> reporter: labor day picnics and parades, unofficial start to the campaign season. the unofficial candidate who is in the polls but hasn't declared, vice president joe biden, is leading a labor day parade in pennsylvania today. >> tracie potts, thank you. a murder suspect is in jail this morning and it didn't take police long to get him there. it's the latest in the rise of violence in the district. the man faces charges after a double shooting in northwest. we counted as many as 13 evidence marketers on 7th street, close enough to coolidge high school. officers arrested etheridge hours after he shot hooper. another man is recovering from a gunshot wound as well. as we mentioned we are tracking that rise in violence after this morning we are now up to 108 homicides in d.c. now, that's in addition to sunday's deadly shooting of a 22-year-old man who died in that shooting friday night on 25th street northeast. police found a man's body with a gunshot wound saturday inside a burned out car on xenia street. there are 105 homicides in all of 2014. a developing story now overseas. france's president just announcing his country will welcome 24,000 refugees. this comes one day after pope francis asked every catholic church in europe to help migrants fleeing from their countries. he's already accepted two at the vatican. germany and austria have opened their doors to migrants as well. migrants from several different parts of the middle east say that they have been treated horribly by the police. >> the police are not -- so that's why we need to run away and just go. maybe to germany. but run away. we don't want to -- want them to catch us here. >> now, many hungarians are upset about the treatment to the migrants. many are bringing food and supplies to the train station in budapest. in less than three weeks pope francis will make his highly anticipated trip to the u.s. several are getting ready to receive the holiness. the archdiocese launched a papal video contest. the winner will get four tickets on september 23rd. you can check out which churches the pope will stop on our app. today there are a lot of free ways you can celebrate labor day with the entire family. the town of kensington will have a parade this morning. that or head over to gaithersburg if you want to be at republicans apparently. the gop criticized president obama for changing mt. mckinley to denali. well, republicans did that same thing to reagan national back in the '90s. they want to change the name back to washington national airport to honor george washington. the company launched a petition. it has more than 60,000 signatures right now. two high school football players are suspended for intentionally knocking down a referee. look at this video. this happened in -- in san antonio. friday night. do you see that right there? players from john jay high school knocking down that ref from behind. well, there is an investigation underway right now to determine whether either player hit the ref on purpose. both students have been suspended from the school and the team. the coach highly >> well, it's been a year since anyone has seen two missing children from germantown, maryland. katherine huggal was the last person to see them. they disappeared last year. in july, a judge ruled that catherine hoggle was not competent to stand trial on child neglect charges. a hiker from vancouver was able to signal for help from a flashlight, so canadian search and rescue teams would find them. the 68-year-old was able to use his flashlight to signal a helicopter. rescuers had to rappel about 200 feet down a cliff and others climbed a water fall to get him out. so staff at an indianapolis zoo are trying to figure out how a 4-month-old cheetah got loose over the weekend. the zoo was on lockdown for over an hour before they could track it down and tranquilize it. >> i didn't feel like we were endangered at any point in time. but you could tell it was something serious by the looks on the faces of the employees. they did a good job. they did a good job of getting this to a safe place. >> yeah. nobody was hurt though and the cheetahs are being kept off exhibit until the zoo finds out how one got away. about 60 boat owners scrambling for a new place to dock. their current home in d.c. will close for good at the end of the year. now, some of the boat owners tell news4's derrick ward they'll miss the place and they don't understand the decision. >> this is a hidden gem, you don't know it's here until you're on top of it. >> reporter: blue nose, 50 years on the water and still seaworthy. but as they mind the cut of the jib and hoist it, their main concern this is the one of the last times they will set sail here. the national park service will shut it down. they lease it and own it. the cost of modernizing it and ensuring it's safe are too high to make it a feasible marina. >> i don't understand why they made a unilateral decision to close it down. >> there's repeated requests to improve the marinas and they have been denied by the national park service. >> reporter: even the park service acknowledges the clean pa reyna -- marina practice is part of the comeback. elizabeth remembers childhood outings here with her father. there are the anecdotes from for people with modest and moderate means is an incredible resource. >> reporter: after the december shutdown, they want to keep it as a river access point with kayaking. but the folks are looking for ways to change their mind, hoping the ship will change as it already sailed. derrick ward, news4. a fire forced people living at these apartments in -- the north park apartments to briefly evacuate yet. the apartments are on park avenue and the fire department says it started in the kitchen of one apartment. and smoke quickly then started to fill in the hallways. a traffic alert to pass along the you. expect lane closures on a busy road on rock creek. pepco will close several lanes of clingal road in northwest. this is between adams mill road and the bridge over the creek. pepco says the contractor from another company started a mineral leak while doing work in that area friday. utility companies used nontoxic mineral oil to insulate the labels. bill euille says voters should not count him out even though he lost the primary. he says he'll run for re-election as a write-in candidate. news4 was there as he made that announcement people want him to run. they're stopping him on by slightly more than 300 votes. today is the last day of summer for lots of students in virginia. thousands will head back to the classroom in fairfax county. more than 57,000 high schoolers will get to sleep later this school year. the 22 high schools will start between 8:00 and 8:10. changing start times means changing bus schedules. the police will be helping to keep that morning rush smooth with all the extra buses. well, arlington county schools will open students back tomorrow. and discovery is opening for the first time in the morning. it's named for john glenn, and is the first school in 13 years. there was concern the school wouldn't be ready for the first day. the school has slides and movable walls, pretty cool. officials say it was designed to reflect new ideas about teaching around learning. spotsylvania and alexandria and stafford is back in session tomorrow morning. we are going to have complete back to school coverage right here on "news4 today." well, it was the photo to have on your instagram this summer in d.c. a cannonball into the ball pit known as the beach. well, today, the more than 650,000 plastic balls will be packed up and moved to the dupont more likely to get it from their siblings than from their moms. researchers saying saying this might be because more school age kids are getting whooping cough. infants face the greatest risk of death from the illness. well, e-cigarettes have jumped in popularity among teenagers in recent years. now new research suggests some teens are using them to smoke marijuana. erica edwards has how it could happen in front of your eyes. >> reporter: are these teenagers getting a hit of nicotine or secretly getting high? >> teens have actually discovered how to use e-cigarettes for marijuana. >> reporter: researchers from yale university school of medicine had them fill out questionnaires. 18% of the kids said they vaped marijuana. >> other kids who said they had both used e-cigarettes and had experimented with cannabis in the past, the number was up higher to around 27%. >> reporter: often they're smoking hash oil, a thick resin extracted from marijuana plants. it tends to be more potent than the average joint and there's little to no scent. that means they could be smoking around unsuspecting teachers or parents. >> their fear of getting caught has gone down. that's a big deal. once you remove that fear of getting punished, they're going to experiment more. and i'm not surprised one bit about it. >> reporter: what's more, incidents of marijuana may disrupt normal development of
