Next up we have reporters notebook oig. Well be back in 15 minutes. And happy mothers day. Welcome to reporters notebook. Im wendy rieger. Real dramatic incident this week involving a metrobus. We talk about metro a lot. And this time a man can for the on the bus with a knife and attacked the driver, hijacked the bus. Things for the out of control and they ended up killing the poor gentleman who was taking the trash out near the curb. Jumped the curb and kill this had poor gentleman and now there is a whole new issue with metro. Now the safety of their bus driver. I mean, do you cage them off . And then what about the safety of the passengers . This is just another layer of safety issue in the metro empire. Well, in a to cage them off, they want that plexiglass and they have it on about 300 metro buses. I dont think they have them on all. So that is the issue. We were talking about the safety of the passengers, but if the bus drivers arent safe, then the passengers arent safe either. This young man was on drugs, there is not much that metro can do about that. But i do think take this again will bring up this issue about driver safety, the union has talked about this in the district and wanting those plex city glass things there and also about where riders put money into the collection boxes. Glass about where riders put money into the collection boxes. Sometimes those arent working and folks get on the bus for free and many riders then expect to ride the bus free and then theyre not happy when the machine is working so then you get back and forth with riders. So i think you will see more of the union stepping forward saying we need to have things that we do need even though this situation may not necessarily match up to those particular issues. I dont know if there is much you can really do about it, but youre right, the unions will first be concerned about the safety of their driver. I know a few bus drivers who say that one of the biggest problems they have is just the attitude of some people. And its not all the routes. We have to keep that in mind, too. There are problematic routes. And people will actually walk on, refuse to pay, there is not much that the drivers can do. And you may have to get into a situation where the Police Department knows some of the troubled areas and thats where they might station people at certain times and certain locations. Yeah, this is really the worst nightmare, i mean think about drivers as you mentioned, they always are one step away it seems to be from some kind of horrendous thing happening on the bus. The unruly passenger and of course in this case somebody who takes the driver over. I nk good idea, but then there is no interaction with helping them with their change or if they dont want to pay. Just a roeason that you may nee to get out of the booth. But think about all the movies youve seen about captive businesses and people going crazy and here it happens in real life. But i think the empaneling of the bus drives is the best answer or better surveillance of people at the timing on the bus, but who does the surveillance. There youve got a good point. And there are some cities where they do have cameras. And then once again, at least you have evidence. Cameras can be a deterrent to a lot of criminal activity. And i think what the union can also use as backing, there has been federal douptd tags showing that assaults against bus drivers are up like 37 in the last year and a half. They have had hearings on the hill about this, department of transportation has about violence on buses. So this can be an opportunity to have a discussion for metro unfortunately its another discussion about something that maybe they dont have control of, but something again that is going wrong with riding metro rail or metro bus. In and even if you have a camera which many of them do, this by was high allegedly on pcp and k2. So what did you think, a camera wont be a determent. But at least you can prosecute quickly. You have witnesses, take type of continuing. And again with the plexiglass becomes important because if he can core done himself off the bus driver there attacker, he can still maybe control the bus. So its not a bus. Right. The gentleman was able to hijack the bus. And then there is Something Else and i dont know if buses here have it or not, wed have to check on that, where you can set an alarm signal outside of the bus where lights ca or a sign can go off that would alert people that danger, danger, or send help. I think he was able to hit a call button that alerted police that there was a problem on the bus. But again, that is sort of after the problem started. I wonder if there is some kind of a provision or structure that they could just stop the bus. Thats a good idea. Disables the bus. And it would also trirg an alarm and of the authorities could be on the way. Because it happened in a matter of seconds, the map gets on the bus, stabs the attacks and stabs the driver and then takes over the bus and boom, hes jumped the curb and now the gentleman is killed. I mean it happened someone said in like 90 seconds. And then metro meanwhile at the ntsb hearing, metro was focused more on the subway system but was told that they have a learning disability cannot seem to digest the ramifications of their issues. And start getting them corrected. A scathing report. They finally had the final report on lenfant plaza. For protection against smoke basically. Everything went wrong. We talked about this a number of times on the program. Everything weve said was in that report. And Eleanor Morton was telling me that there is no water process. The water just dries up. That he a how 4e get rid of water in the subway. There is poor lighting and any number of things wrong. And now the members of congress that i talked to say its time for heads to roll. Its tough to fire people on the subway, but Jerry Connolly has said it, Eleanor Norton has said it. They have to get rid of the dead wood. Norton says it should be up to the top people to fire the people below because they do what the people tell them to do. And therefore the responsibility is theirs. Its a management problem. Finally john delaney says you have to change the whole metro w board of directors. He wants to make them professional relative to finance or safety or things of that nature. Or transportation. As you were talking, and we keep talking about starts at the top, well, the top is the board of directors. They get the reports. They have the authority on to d lot of things. And i think hes right. These are like almost political appointments and i think you have to redo the whole board of directors and if youre going to start at the top, start way at the top. Absolutely right. You have a board full of politicians right now. What is new is old, right . But anthony fox has already replaced three of those on Board Members p. Well take a quick break and be right b welcome back. If you registered through the motor thing in the district to vote, it may not stick. There a new report out that yaechb expla i cant even explain it. Who can explain it . Motor voting is something that is dear to my heart. So when you go into a dmv, you can also check and sign and register to vote. So what happened is that people either forgot to sign that they were registering to vote and they passed it on to the voting registr Registrars Office through pain h doesnt get checked and people thought they were registered to vote only to find out they werent and they dont find out until they thoue show up to vot. And they better get it together before the primary and certainly before the general. What isnt this computerized . This isnt 1960. And i guess because they arent prepared to spend the money. Or it could be some fear of what the computer might screw things up. Remember in maryland now, and i voted in maryland in the primary. You did it by paper. And then you sort of stuck it into the machine. But that is actual voting. Not just registering. Thats true. Its a totally different thing. And i think what this does again sort of pokes a hole in the confidence people have in the government and when they can do and especially in the district. I remember a couple years ago, they had a voting pamphlet and the emblem was wrong or something upside dow thing, but its not. If youre the person going in getting ready to vote and you think youve registered, and to joes point, many would say some Voter Registration in the dmv is the way to include more folks in to the voting process. And so then if folks feel like theyre in the dmv and now theyre not in the process, it pokes holes in the whole spent of what this is supposed to do. This probably wont happen in the district. Spent of what this is supposed to do. This probably wont happen in the district. Republicans didnt like it because it they say who goes to the auto places, democrats. They called it auto fraudo. That was their word for motor registration. I think the bill has moved on, but there is obviously a problem with fraud with the mistakes that people make. So i think the answer is just to not the give it up, but to through. I have to tell you, though, and i dont often disagree with dave. This is not about fraud. Really, it isnt. This is about mistakes being made. Because even in states where they are there is voter suppression, its like 0. 000. Its a solution looking for a problem that doesnt exist. But the d. C. Situation, i just think again, its people not to be honest, being careless. Just being careless. And voters not being told you have to sign. When it happened it back to them, say, no, you didnt fill this out. My goodness, i order something from pottery barn and i cant even get it done without you didnt check this box. Could the reverse be that youre looking at something, youre reading it, should you be reading it through knowing that you have to sign s
