joining us. i'm megan fits gerard. >> and i'm erika gonzalez. we begin with new calls for attorney general jeff sessions to resign. >> it's a report in a "washington post" that sessions spoke with russia's ambassador twice last year. in an nbc news exclusive, sessions denies any wrong doing. >> i have not met with any russians at any time to discuss any political campaign and those remarks are unbelievable to me and i don't have anything else to say about that. >> the justice department is investigating russian interference in the presidential election. news 4's edward lawrence has the latest. >> reporter: aides to the attorney general confirm he spoke to the russian ambassador twice last september and never disclosed it during the confirmation hearing. here's what he said under oath. >> if there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the trump cam russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do? >> senator franken, i'm not aware of any of those activities. i have been called a surrogate a time or two in that campaign and i didn't have communications with the russians. >> democrats remain critical of the possible ties to russia. >> how can we expect him to keep our citizens safe and protect our democracy if he will criticize all of our friends around the globe but continues to praise russia. >> reporter: sessions says he spoke to the ambassador in his role with the senate armed services kmtd, not representing trump. >> some called on the attorney general to resign. you may remember michael flynn resigned because of his phone calls with russian ambassador last year. nbc news, washington. meanwhile, president trump is tweeting about the stock market, he wrote, since novemb market has posted $3.2 trillion in gains and consumer confidence is at a 15-year high. jobs, end quote. let's show you a live look at the new york stock exchange. the dow looking to extend its record breaking prally after closing over 21,000 for first time yesterday, down 14 -- 14 points but still above the 29 -- still above the 21,000 mark we saw yesterday. >> turning to the weather and the big change from this time yesterday, today it is the 40s and windy. yesterday we were -- did we hit 80? >> i would love to have the 70s back. that would be nice but let's get a look from lauren. >> it's going to warm up a little bit. i'm talking about 50 degrees. yesterday we were 80. we did get a record that yesterday. upper 70s bwi. those areas didn't make a record unfortunately but we certainly did here. it was gorgeous. i'm going to get out of the way to see exactly how pretty it is out there. as we continue we have the winds that will continue, unfortunately. it's still going to be a little on the breezy side, 47 is the temperature right now. look at the wind, northwest, 28 miles an hour. we're seeing higher gusts too. 35, even 40 miles per hour. but the wind advisory is down, thank goodness. today going to be a little on the blustery side. winds aren't settling down until tonight. saturday, winds will pick up through the morning and then we could have light snow showers. you ready for that? second day of march, third day of march. this weekend is going to be quiet but i know everybody wants to know about this. we're going to time that out for you. the full forecast in just about 15 minutes. a popular park in fairfax county. near the parklawn recreational center say bodies could be buried there. megan mcgrath joins us live with what she's learning this morning. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, if you take a look behind me here, you can see we still have limited access to crater place. police have tape across the roadway, only residents that live on that section are allowed down at this point as police continue to search that heavily wooded area, that park that you see behind these houses. now, these been searching since getting a tip tuesday night that there are human remains here. they say the investigation may be gang related. take a look at this video. there is a white tent that has been put up in the woods. it was there yesterday. but today we caught investigators doing what appeared to be a grid search in that police tape and officers we can see them methodically pushing aside the fallen leaves on ground, taking a very close look around that particular area. now police won't say if there is a connection between what's happening here and two ms13 gang related cases. the murder of rivas and reyes. the tip also talked about lemon road park and there could be remains there. that area was searched as well. nothing was found. it's also worth mentioning that this park has been used by ms13 gang members in the past. there were two murders in the park, one in 2013, the other in 2014. those responsible in those cases were arrested and convicted. as for this tip, this search still ongoing, a lot of questions as to whether or not they have found anything yet. back to you. >> megan mcgrath, thank you. >> just a quick question, have seen that tent, megan, up since two days ago. and we know there's that crime scene tape around it. any reason to believe that police are sort of honing in on that area for a particular reason? >> reporter: oh, absolutely, they are certainly focusing their attention on this one particular area. you can see that white tent and then they have the entire spot rather large spot enpsych circled with this tape. they don't want anyone not associated with the police, not an investigator to come in and potentially disturb what they are looking at in that spot. they are definitely not doing a large search. they were definitely looking at this specific spot. now why? [ speaking spanish ] >> translator: i want you to imagine that every day you have to live with the fear of being deported. >> we want a vibrant community, welcoming new viewpoints and experiences to keep hyattsville growing. >> i will personally take legal action and i will do anything i can to prevent this from happening. >> president trump signed an executive order last month to strip federal funding from sanctuary cities. president trump is headed to newport news virginia, he'll visit the uss gerald ford to talk about military spending. earlier he proposed an increase in defense spending as part of his budget outline. the president is expected to participate in briefings and me remarks. this is a story getting a lot of attention. i think it's trending on facebook. could oprah winfrey mount a bid for presidency in 2020. she suggested that a run could be in her future. winfrey sh hut down a run for president in the past. she hinted his roots as businessman and reality tv star could make her reconsider. >> possibly oprah for president. we'll keep an eye on that. former vice president joe biden and their wife jill are happy for hunter's new relationship but here's the shocker. according to the quts new york post, he is dating the widow of his late brother beau biden. beau was the former delaware attorney general who died from brain cancer in 2011. the bidens are also quoted in the report saying the pair is quote, incredibly lucky to have found love during a difficult time. making his first appearance on the "ellen" show today, opening up about his relationship with the obamas and funny moment from president trump's inauguration. >> poncho was a problem. had you put a poncho -- there's -- have you put one on? was it the first time. >> it looks like it, doesn't it. >> i love it. you've got to watch president bush on the ellen show right here on news 4 today at 3:00 p.m. >> absolutely. this year millions of baby boomers and maybe that includes you, will become the first generation to plan their retirements around their 401(k)s. >> but before you touch those funds, nbc's business correspondent jolene kent expresses what you need to keep in mind. >> reporter: for rich and dale, retirement can't come soon ug is our time. >> i'm very happy with it. >> reporter: the baby boomer couple in their 60s has been diligently putting away money in their 401(k) for 45 years. >> we're in a really good position. >> reporter: part of the first generation to plan retirement around 401(k)s as boomers turn 701/2 they are required to start withdrawing their money. >> retirement accounts are set up by the u.s. government to give you a tax break of sorts. at some point the government would like you to withdraw that income from those accounts. >> reporter: because you'll pay tax on withdrawals, it's important to know your options. find out how much your first required withdrawal should be from your 401(k) provider and calculate your tax rate and consider putting it in an investment account to grow the cash further. more than half of american households are at risk of running low on money during retirement and some people need their 401(k) money beforethy retire. if you do, there is a little known irs exception, section allows limited penalty free withdrawals from your 401(k) at any age for at least five consecutive years, withdrawals are still taxed but you won't get hit with the 10% penalty. they have worked hard to build a nest egg. >> the best thing to do is have it drawn out of your salary right away. don't let it go through your hands. if you don't see it, you don't have to spend and you don't really feel it. >> reporter: saving early for life's biggest rewards down the road. jolene kent, nbc news, vacaville, california. if you work in maryland, your employer may be required to offer paid sick leave, heading for a full house vote. that vote could happen as early as friday. the bill is an alternate to one of republican governor larry hogan -- one that he proposed. his measure requires paid leave for companies with 50 or more workers. hogans ease the burden on small businesses. imagine getting a water bill in the mail that's nearly five times higher than what you previously paid? >> it happened to a d.c. woman and nbc 4 responds has learned it could happen to you. susan hogan explains. >> dorothy reeves is used to paying the same price on every month's water bill. when her bill climbed by nearly $400, she turned to nbc 4 responds to get answers. we got to work immediately and contacted d.c. water and within days, dorothy's bill was adjusted to reflect what she really owed. >> after i call you my bill way $11.12. >> wonderful. >> which i think is good. >> reporter: nbc 4 responds has learned that dorothy isn't the only customer that experienced a meter related issue, in fact, d.c. water has now launched a massive effort to replace all residential meters throughout the district. coming up tonight on news 4 5:00, what that means for you and for those of you living in the district and while you may want to check your next water bill out. >> thanks, susan. susan hogan will tell us about potentially dangerous gearshifters in new vehicles coming up in the next half hour. >> long inbound. >> whoa! let's go back and look at that again, please. first an amazing full court pass then a buzzer beating shot to win it! this is how northwestern beat michigan yesterday. fans pouring on the court. it could give them a spot in the ncaa tournament for the very first time. >> wow. >> march madness begins in just a couple of weeks. >> wow. >> i'm a michigan fan but that was a good one. >> yeah, it was, incredible shot. >> it's read across america day in a few minutes, we'll let you know how you can help us storms last night left damage like this. and now a powerful line of severe storms made its way to our area and left behind costly damage in central tennessee. the system produced three tornadoes there yesterday morning and you can see by this damage is. this is over a marina in antioch. no critical injuries have been reported. >> and it was a weather alert day yesterday and today we're seeing what that storm left behind. this is all part of of the same system that caused those midwest tornadoes. here the winds toppled trees and brought down wires. check out this amazing video from montgomery county where houses were partially crushed and fire crews said they rescued one driver who was trapped in fallen wire. a lot of cleaning up to do today. really dangerous. >> meanwhile, for us, i can't believe that we're talking about record setting temperatures yesterday and now we're talking about the possibility for snow. >> yep. >> you thought winter was over. >> nope, it's not. >> really ricketts. >> i'm so over it. i was over snow let's go ahead to spring. definitely not feeling like spring today. feeling like summer yesterday but we're back in the season today. mark 2nd it feels like -- gusty winds out there. thank goodness we don't have the wind advisory, it doesn't mean it's not still going to be windy. gusts are in the 30s and we're cooling down. for the next four days say good-bye to spring like temperatures. we have a quiet week with plenty of sunshine. if you like spring, we're going to be back into the '60s as get through early next week. in the 30s, almost nearing 40 degrees. that makes it feel a lot cooler than what the actual air temperature is. a lot of windchills are stuck in the 30s, when you're headed outside, temperatures over the next couple of hours going to stay right in the upper 40s to lower 50s depending on your location. it's a gorgeous day. we've got plenty of sunshine. winchester had a few earlier today. we can't rule it out. we have a little disturbance will pass through early tomorrow morning. could get snow showers and there could be a dusting on area roadways but some snow showers through the day tomorrow at any given time. some could mix in by rain. by tomorrow night we're fine. not anticipating a lot of problems but i want to mention it. temperatures tomorrow low to mid-40s and we're heading into the weekend and early next week. we'll let you know when you can see them and if we have more snow in the ten-day forecast. >> you may see a lot of dr. seuss hats on your social media feed throughout the day because it's read across america day in honor of dr. seuss's birthday. post a picture of your favorite dr. seuss book and let us know why it's your favorite and you can tweet your pictures at nbc washington using the #readacrossamerica. full disclosure -- notll disclosure but my favorite is green eggs and ham. what's yours? >> i'll place this here and just kick the cone did. >> kick the cone. all right, failed that too. this is impactful for me, i can imagine what this is like for a teenager. >> no doubt, finally, the ultimate test, i'm about to get behind the wheel of this car on the same exact course i mastered earlier, sober. >> immediately i start hitting cones and another one and another one. >> that's a cone but in real life that could have been a child, could have been deadly. >> when it's over, i look at the course and the trail of damage is frightening. all of this happened and i'm not really drunk, i have my wits about me, i couldn't i could think like i'm sober, which i am. imagine if your mind was going and you're really drunk. this is scary. worked on me. today just an experiment but on the road the consequences are deadly. >> the whole point is to avoid crashes, the leading cause of death for teens is vehicle crashes. we want that number down to zero, one life is too much to lose. >> most certainly is. that was jeff rosen reporting. the ford driving skills for life program trained over a million students and they do the demonstrations across the country free of charge. to see if your neighborhood is on the list coming up soon, go today.com. >> we're talking about the impact of yellow blue line riders this saturday into april, trains from huntington to braddock road stations will be single tracking also expect to wait as long as 24 minutes between trains. metro officials are who use those stations to look for other ways to get around while surge 13 is in effect. you can find transportation alternatives in our nbc washington app. just search metro alternatives. and they used to be easy to use but now the stylish interior of new cars are leading to problems when it comes to shifting gears. >> that's right. they might look better but consumer reports says these new shifters can be confusing and potentially dangerous. consumer reporter susan hogan explains. >> recently we reported on a recall involving gearshift confusion, fiat chrysler recalled more than 1 million cars and suvs because the gearshift makes it too easy for drivers to forget to put the vehicle in park before getting out. for decades cars with automatic transmissions had a simple straight forward shifter but some newer cars have shifter that lok the new designs can set their models apart or offer a touch of luxury, consumer reports warns those could be complicated and even counter intuitive. >> the problem with the unconventional gear selectors, they make it hard to consistently pick the correct gear, especially park. in the worst case, that means the car could roll away. >> i'm am a mercedes benz and it is a electronic shifter, it means no matter what position you're in, it returns to the center and makes it hard to see what gear you're in. putting it into park there's a small button at the end blocked by the steering wheel. >> reporter: another problem sinces not immediately obvious on some models it's possible for the car to roll after the driver gets out. some manufacturers have built in safeguards and ford and lincoln and acura and honda and gm now automatically return to park if the engine is shut off and gear to prevent those roll aways. they believe these confusing shifters can be dangerous and it's now actually deducting points for cars that don't have built-in fail safe that prevent rollaway accidents. if you already own a car with one of these shifters, consumer reports recommends you always double check when it's in park and use the emergency brake any time you're going to step out of the car. back to you. >> susan hogan, thank you. let's take a look outside, shall we? radar showing not a lot going on. plenty of sunshine and it is a gorgeous day out there. and temperatures in the 40s, upper 40s to around 50 today. i can't rule out a few flurries as we go through the day especially west of the blue ridge mountains, a little piece of energy comes through, won't amount to much and we could have snow showers through the day tomorrow. we'll have a few flakes flying around on friday, may we'll clear out friday night. saturday going to be gorgeous but temperatures tomorrow in the low to mid-40s and it's going to be blusterying, feeling more like the 30s on friday. saturday and sunday back in the 40s, do we have 70s? how do you spot like that and be truthful to what was going on? >> absolutely, it was a very violent time and the powerful thing about that, in the midst of all of that violence and inhumane treatment, there was still love and yearning and family. so while we do have very powerful scenes that depict those moments, we balance it with the making sure keeping true with what was going on with the intricacies of family. >> speaking of family, can we talk about who this may be geared towards? is this for children is this only for adults? who do you all invite out to come and see this production? >> it's primarily an adult production, however we do have 9, 10, 11-year-old children in the production itself. we up and we do understand that parents need to be understanding they need to have that dialogue with the children -- >> it opens up conversation. >> absolutely. they need to have that dialogue because there are going to be things that they see that might be shocking to them. this dialogue is going to be very important. >> i'm sure serve as good talking points there. >> absolutely. >> with parents and kids. please remind everybody when they can see this? >> it will be at the atlas performing arts center this saturday at 3:00 in the lang theater. so they can get tickets at atlas arts.org. >> is it first only, last weekend? >> this is the last weekend for the inter -- thanks to doug and the atlas intersections family, but we'll be there and our performance is at 3:00. >> thank you very much. we appreciate your time. >> megan, back over to you. >> erika, thank you. you've probably seen t b zoo. luke is an 11-year-old alpha male lion from south africa. this morning we go where luke is rarely seen by the public eye. at the dentist. >> reporter: luke was in fine form recently as he romed the big cat house at the national zoo. luke is clearly the king of his castle. but the big guy wasn't looking so royal when we found him, konked out on an operating table earlier. his massive paws kept warm by colorful mittens. >> the root of this tooth is about up here where my finger is. >> reporter: this is baron hall during a regular checkup on luke to make sure his teeth are healthy. >> since they are wild animals and you can't just go and -- >> you have to knock them out. which is why luke has a team of medical technicians monitoring his vital signs and keeping this 400 pound wild carnivore peacefully asleep. dr. haul is a veterinarian dentist who specializes in exto theic animals. he's so rare, he's in demand at zoos and sanctuaries around the world. he's been in the mouth of some fierce beasts. >> i've worked on black bears, grizzly bears, brown bears, pretty much every cat. polar bear is on my bucket list. >> wild animals need dental work because an unhealthy mouth can make animals sick. alpha males can have a bad tooth and be in pain and hide it because pain is a sign of weakness and can get them killed in the wild. luke is quite special. he came to the national zoo when he was a year old. >> luke was brought into our facility from a facility in south africa, which means his specific genetic lin all. >> reporter: that gave breeders a fresh gene pool to expand the lion population in this country. luke proved to be a rock star. >> he's been an outstanding breeding animal for us. he's produced five litters, four of which have all survived. it's been -- he's had a great run for us. >> reporter: luke is now 11, slowing down a bit although he can live into his 20s. staring into the business end of a lion, one has renewed respect for this king of beast, especially when dr. hall tells you this -- >> you could extract every tooth in their mouth and power of -- they'll pop your head like a grape if they wanted to. >> reporter: fortunately luke can still bite your head off. he left the exam with teeth intact and mouth cleaned up and ready to, you know -- >> great story, can still bite our head off, good to know. >> and dr. hall, by the way, he provides his services to the zoo free of charge. >> that's so cool. love that piece. >> three youngsters are getting national attention for their speed but it's the track star's family situation that makes their story even more special. you're going to meet them after the break. >> coming up, the oscar fallout continues. it's all about that huge mistake at the end of the show that has now been shown over and over and over again. we'll tell you who is being asked not to return to the awds show. ar stard's back. the family favorite... protein. protein proteiny protein. proteiny protein? >> yes. >> reporter: but to truly appreciate the shepherds, you have to know where they are running from. a brooklyn homeless shelter. >> we make the best by of it by >> reporter: they've been here since 2015 a a half brother was killed and mom tonya fell on hard times. >> it was something i never thought would happen. >> reporter: all four share one bed. to dwet get to a track meet they took two buses and subway. sports illustrated names them sports kids of the year. >> i want to be another greatest olympian of all time like michael phelps. >> we want them to run through the high school years and perhaps get an athletic scholarship. >> what do you want to be?
