>> i don't know if it impacts it too much. i think it's more of a statement of ben carson's anger still at ted cruz because his remaining supporters were more inclined to go cruz over trump. i was surprised carson did this considering how vicious at some points trump's attacks on him were. but i think it also tells you something about there's a resignation i have noticed in the air over the last 48 hours. you saw it a little bit at the debate last night with the three candidates sort of backing off on their attacks. you're hearing some senators going, well, maybe he'll bring out new voters that will help us hold the senate. so i think you're starting to see some -- i don't think it's excited rallying around t it's going to be his. we better go ahead and rally around him which is surprising. >> let's talk about what we're seeing on the campaign trail and new acts of what-- violence at protesters, even some members of the press. how big a deal is this and how concerned should the republican be and the trump camp be? >> well, look, donald trump today in st. louis confronted more protesters than ever and he didn't back off. he didn't -- you know, if you remember john mccain and sarah palin in the last month of the campaign, things started getting a little bit heated at some rallies and they made efforts to sort of ratchet things down. trump is not doing that yet. it was almost a sense of defiance by him today. the more criticism he's gotten about this, the more he's going i'm not backing down. but, look, i think it is now a magnet. i think now every trump rally is going to be defined by this issue until he makes a move to say, look, you can't hold him accountable for the some individual who punches somebody in the face, but when the candidate himself said that, i want to punch a protebser in the face, you know, he can set a tone, and i think that that's the argument that some critics are making, that he's setting the wrong tone. i think it would politically benefit him if he actually said, you know what? i have sort of let these things get carried away. i thought it was in fun. it's not turning out to be in fun. let's calm things down. he hasn't done that yet. >> on the democratic side how are things looking between clinton and sanders heading into the primaries on tuesday? >> what's fascinating and it's an underreported story is bernie sanders is going hard negative on hillary clinton on trade in the last couple of states. tough new ads he's got out in illinois, ohio, and north carolina as well. i think it's a sense to me that the sanders campaign number one has some money but realizes, this is their last best chance to truly make a clinton and, you know, if he doesn't win -- it's possible he could lose all five states and she will then declare the primary over and it would be hard -- or he could win. there are three states he could win. he could do well in ohio, very similar to michigan. he could do well in missouri, and he could surprise in illinois. so i think that's what they're trying to do. i think it's a last ditch sand isers throw it all against the ball, go tougher on her on the issue of trade and see what happens. >> if he doesn't do well in any of those primaries, does he stay all the way in. >> he wants to accumulate delegates. weigh nts to impact the platform. his candidacy, he's already had success in moving the party to the left. so i don't think -- he's got too much money -- presidential candidates get out for one reason and one reason only, when they run out of money. bernie sanders is not going to run out of money. >> clinton would like to put him away but can't seem to do it. >> if she's going to face trump, the policy differences between policy differences between her and sanders when it comes to trade and other things. in some ways battling sanders gives her a taste of what it's going to be like to go against trump. >> thanks, chuck. >> see you sunday morning. you can catch chuck todd on sunday's "meet the press" at 10:30 on nbc 4. and here is what you missed at last night's state dinner at the white house. president obama and first lady michelle obama hosted canadian prime minister justin trudeau and his wife. prime minister trudeau got a big laugh during his toast when he said he hopes his hair doesn't get as gray as fast as president obama's did. 200 people were at the dinner. the guest list included canadian-american celebrities like michael j. fox, mike myers, and ryan reynolds. when two montgomery county police officers arrived at auto fiery scene, they did not hesitate to help the driver helped inside and though it meant putting their own lives at risk, today the man they saved got to thank those officers who were honored at this year's v valor awards. >> reporter: this police dashcam video shows officer cody fields responding to an accident. a car with its engine on fire on the bellway last september. fields tried smashing the window to get to the unconscious driver. the car filling with smoke. officer brian nesbitt joined him. they worked together risking their lives to pull the driver out of the car. >> fire rescue on scene said that if we hadn't done what he had, he would have died. >> reporter: melissa mollet and tom costello emceed this year's montgomery county chamber of commerce public safety awards luncheon. the gold medal of valor was awarded to police officers cody fields and brian nesbitt. >> that's my little boy but he's growing up to be a hero extremely proud. >> reporter: and best of all, for the first time they got to meet rashad israel, the man they saved from the burning car. >> i'm really blessed, you know. i'm thankful for them for saving me, you know. if not, i wouldn't have been here for my kids, for my family. >> definitely glad he's here to experience this with us, and to shake his hand and say, you know, you're welcome for what we did. it's a great feeling. >> reporter: almost all the first responders honored here today say they were just doing their duty. but when they face danger and possible death, they all relied on their training and performed with valor. chris gordon, news4. he took off his air mask to save a stranger. tonight a local firefighter talked about their emotional reunion and why he has no regrets. she danced with the first family and captured our hearts. now the community is giving back to a woman who shows no i do everything on the internet. but it's kind of slow. my friends said i should get fios because it's the fastest... i just downloaded 600 photos in 60 seconds. that's seriously better.
