Reporter hey, barbara. Take a look. This is 15th and k street. You can see traffic backed up in one direction and as we turn, traffic backed up all of the way down k street in the other direction. This is where most of the Traffic Control officers are stationed and Muriel Bowser saying were officers, but they wont hit the streets for some time. We will put more Traffic Control officers on the street at bus, bridges and critical intersections. Reporter that was last thursday when mayor bowser laid out a plan to cope with a year of metro delays. Today the mayor explained the Traffic Control officers wont hit the streets for several weeks as the earliest. They have to hire them. Currently, only ten intersections are staffed by Traffic Control officers during rush hour. All of those intersections are near the downtown k street corridor. The district has begun the process of hiring 20 additional tcos. 700 candidates and 100 of which are District Residents and were in the process of going through all of them at this time so that we can ensure that we select 20 of the best and the brightest. Bowser said when she announced the additional Traffic Control officers next week. She didnt intend to give people the impression that theyd start this week. Expecting the brunt of the impacts in the district to happen over the course of a couple of surges. So were going to gear up just as fast as possible. Now, the hope is to get an additional 20 Traffic Control officers on the streets by the end of this month and then 20 more by next fall. We reported on it for almost a week after the incident happened and now for the first time were getting an opportunity to see what happened to this man before he took his last breaths. In june 2014, samuel shilts was brought to the Prince Georges County jail, charged for not paying his bus fare.
