>> reporter: other legislate jays pending to discourage smoking would require all smoking products not just cigarettes be kept either locked up or out of the reach of the general public. t mayor adrian fenty has supported smoking restrictions in the past. >> stay with us, everyone, "news4 today" continues now at 5:00 a.m. zero tolerance, gilbert arenas suspended. plus rough ride, metro is prepared to make some major cuts. how that might change your commute. snow. tom is talking about the first winter storm of the new year. good morning and welcome to "news4 today", i'm eun yang. >> good morning i'm joe krebs, it's the 7th of january 2010. let's take a live look outside. the capitol dome all brilliantly lit. 32 degrees. and some snow on the way. >> feels like snow. >> smells like snow too. as we head out this morning, fairly cold enough for snow but no snow around the region under a clear sky certainly cold enough. near 30. we have a winter weather advisory all thoseounties colored in, loudoun, montgomery, howard for later tonight. right now 20 to 30 degrees. now 30 in washington. and as w look at the view from space over the last six hours it's cloudy, blue ridge west but clear from the blue ridge to the east to the eastern shore so we're off to a clear start. sunshine this morning. but by later on tonight and into tomorrow morning these are the total amounts i expect. certainly be much more out of the mountains and higher elevations. shenandoah valley around the blue ridge, four inches. one to two inches around the d.c. metro area. that could cause problems tomorrow morning. that's all we need is an inch or two on untreated surfaces. cause some commuting problems and maybe some school delays. should end quickly tomorrow morning. blustery and cold as we get into the weekend. now the traffic, jerry, how is it looking >> this morning fine. no weather concerns. head out to the interstates along i-95, 395, 66. should be in freg shape this morning. one early morning accident, 395 northbound at duke street in the hov lanes. that has been cleared. everything reopens. elsewhere along i-270 the trip in along the west from 66 nor of town very quiet. back to you. a superstar pulled from the basketball court, wizards star gilbert arenas has been suspendeded indefinitely from the nba without payfter bringing guns to the verizon center. this morning the investigation is intensifying with new allegations suggest that the locker room confrontation was much more serious than suggested. derrick ward joins us live from the verizon center with more. good morning, the. >> reporter: good morning. we're finding out this incident of much more serious than first revealed and the same holds true for the consequences. wizards star gbert arenas has been placed on indefinite suspension without pay. following an alleged draw down with javaris crittenton last month. the new brunswick commissioner david stern ordered this not so much following the incident but following arenas behavior during a philadelphia 76ers game where he apparently during player introductions made signs of pistols with his finger to appear to shoot his teammates. arenas is not fit to take the court is his statement. we're learning that javaris crittenton loaded and cocked his weapon in the locker room following this confrontation between the two players. now, not only has the nab commissioner sounded off but fans have sounded off as well. >> i think it says a lot about his mental understanding about how serious it was. i mean, for him it wasn't a big deal. >> he's and idiot. >> i don't know. i think the nba was going to do something like. >> perhaps a little harsh but he should be punished, yes. >> reporter: now this incident has also raised criticism from the brady campaign and other quarters. it's being investigated by d.c. police but by the u.s. attorney's office as well. stay with news 4 and nbcwashington.com for the latest. the redskins has a newman in charge. he needs to decide whether to clean house. mike chancetion was introduced yesterday as the team's head coach. today at 6:00 he'll meet with the team's current assistants and coordinators to talk about team and decide which coaches are coordinators and might stay. shanahan takes over a team that went 4-12 this season. he plans to tackle the challenge head on. >> i'm excited and honored to be the head coach of the washington redskins. you take a look at history, you take a look at the hall of fame, the great coaches, the great players, what an honor it is to be the head coach of this franchise. >> redskins owner dan snyder steppi off the stage to sit in the audience ding yesterday's news conference. shanahan is the ultimate decision maker as long as he's in washington which he confirmed during the press conference. and mike shanahan will make some changes to the team's roster as well and what does that mean for starting quarterback jason campbell? "the washington post" said the investigation is shifting to his teammate javaris crittenton who is accused of brandishing a loaded gun during the confrontation. today a bethesda manwill be sentenced for keeping an arsenal in his house. the 18-year-old was arrested in 2008. he could face 10 years in prison for possessing bomb making materials. the man arrested and charged in last year's shootings at the holocaust museum has died in prison. james von braun had been awaiting trialor the murder of security guard steven jone. the 89-year-old suffered a gunshot wound during the attack. his attorney hide he died of natural causes. today the obama administration is releasing the initial report on the security gap that led up to the christmas day terror attempt. president obama said the government had enough information to uncover the plot but that officials failed to connect the dots. bigger crowds at tighter squeezes and longer waits should soon be coming to a metro stationary you. metro board is expected to vote on a long service cuts today. it's to make up for a $40 million short fall. megan mcgrath joins us with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, joe. ridership on metro has been falling which means revenue is down and down in a time when metro is facing some very lean budget times or facing budget short falls. it's a one-two punch here. metro is trying to close their budget gap, a $40 million budget gap by making some service reductions. they are expected to approve these reductions later today during their board meeting. this means more crowded trains, longer waits and the elimination of some bus service.look. if approved the plan would eliminate all eight car trains so that means, of course, that trains will be more crowded. also, the plan would add two to five minutes between mos trains. also, somemezzanines at some stations would be closed. 31 bus lines would be changed, reduced or elimited all together. also metro would reduce service on the holiday seass. all of these are expected to be approved later on today. the changes would take effect at the end of march. the hope here is by implementing these service cutbacks they can eliminate a $40 million budget short fall. certainly there's going to be some pain involved here. going to be more crowding on the trains. we're also going to see more crowding on the buses, elimination of service. it will be inconvenient for some riders but metro officials say it's necessary because of this reductioin ridership and the budget short fall. we'll have more coming up in the next half hour. services on the red line is back to normal after a cracked rail caused some delays for passengers. that crack was discovered outside of the forest glenn station yesterday. trains had to share a single track. that caused delays in both directions. metro says the rail was replaced and everything is now running back on schedule. the man accused of being the third white house crasher says he has nothing to hide. carlos allen said he did have an invitation to the state dinner and he did not sneak inside. investigators think allen met up with the official indian delegation at the willard hotel and slipped past security at the white house dinner. at the white house, rather. however allen's lawyer said his client received an invitation in the mail and even turned it over to investigators. i was invited to the white house for a dinner so i don't know what is legitimate or real. looks pretty official. >> allen's lawyer said the secret service has interviewed his client twice. meanwhile the couple accused of being the original white house crashers will be hosting a party later this month in las vegas. tareq and michaele salahi didn't just make the guest list they will be the guests of honor on january 16th. some call hosting a las vegas party a celebrity right of passage. it is the beginning of a new era for the redskins. mike shanahan has been formally named as the team's new head coach. >> it's time for clean house. that could mean some changes for the roster. what does it mean for jason campbell?
