continue to warm without flow around the high 76 today, 79 tomorrow and thursday. morning low stay in the 30s for the rest of the week, normal high temperature at this time of year in the 60s. close to the record thursday, i don't think we will quite get there. saturday we look at a chance of some showers. it is not st. patrick's day but we do have the parade in raleigh and there may be others recommendations for addressing alzheimer's disease and related conditions in north carolina. >> a task force has been studying how the state can meet the needs of patients. wral's mikaya thurmond is at the legislative building with more on the study and who will speak at it today. >> reporter: dr. lynnea smith, wife of thelate dean smith will be there discussing her role as caregiver as her husband struggled with dementia. in north carolina right now there are more than 160,000 people living with alzheimer's disease. a number projected to double by 2030. through a mandate from the assembly, the task force of alzheimer's disease was charged with developing a strategic plan for the state. the goal is to better prepare the state to meet the needs of patients and caregivers. today the task force will reveal recommendations in areas related to the disease. in addition to dr. smith, caregivers and doctors will also speak. the presentation will happen at the legislative building. it is set to start at 1:00 p.m. mikaya thurmond live in >> raleigh. a new program meant to help find people with alzheimer's, down syndrome and autism. people who qualify wear a device that is always transmitting a unique radio signal. that can be detected by a law enforcement receiver if someone is lost. right now there are two transmitters available. anyone interested can visit the durham county sheriff's office website. accused of killing his ex- girlfriend is considering whether to take a plea deal jamichael malloy is accused of killing danielle locklear in 2013. authorities say he confessed to strangling her and watched as another team, dominic locke dropped her body in the river. locke has already pled guilty. during a hearing, the defense hinted that malloy may consider taking a plea deal to avoid a trial. under the deal, he would plead guilty to first-degree murder and would be considered for parole after 25 years. in an exclusive interview after the hearing, his mother told wral it is up to her son to make that decision. >> whatever god says, whatever my son says, whatever my attorney says. then it is well with my soul. malloy has 30 days to decide if he will accept the plea deal. violent crime increased last year in durham according in 2015 there were 37 homicides, up 68% from 2014. the city saw an increase in the number of burglaries and aggravated assaults. burglaries and larcenies were down as well only slightly. while motor vehicle thefts were up 5%. durham police are working to expand efforts in the community including increasing their presence on social media sites like twitter, facebook andnext door. the durham city manager postponed a body police camera discussion that was on the city council agenda last night. in a message to members, tom bonfield said city leaders and the interim police chief made significant progress on establishing guidelines, but he wants to work out additional details and get input from the new police chief before presenting any recommendations publicly. that new chief is expected to be on the job sometime in may. wake county commissioners proposal to hold tax assessments more often. right now the assessments are done every eight years. under the new proposal it will change to every four years. they say this will help ease the sticker shock for those who see tax rates increase significantly every eight years. the vote will be held march 21 and if it passes the next reappraisal would occur in 2020. shaw rich history will be the focus of a new documentary that will include henry tapper and solar eclipse. skywatchers around the world are gearing up for the years only one. it will be visible just in southeast asia but nasa scientists will test technology that will be pivotal for studying next year's total solar eclipse that will be visible across the united states. so joining us this morning to tell us about what scientists will be testing is nasa scientist, dr. michelle valor. good morning. what is it that scientists need it seems we know a lot about eclipses. >> absolutely. it is actually caused by something simple but is wonderful and where. that means everything has to be lined up perfectly so that the moon passes in front of the sun and the earth falls into the shadow of the moon. what is going on is the shadow will move over southeast asia. people in indonesia, sumatra, there will be scientists from nashville, -- scientists from nasa, that's what's going on tonight. but, scientists use this to study the corona which is the gaseous atmosphere of the sun. the cool thing is that there is all kinds of wonderful things that happen with the corona. around the world scientists can block out the bright disk of the sun and look very close to where the solar weather happened. at nasa we have many satellites that study what is going on with the corona and how it might affect the earth. >> tell us what some of the effects are from the corona. so, the sun is a huge object, more than 1 million times the size of the earth. have a wonderful satellite called the solar dynamics observatory. and, the sdo is able to take incredible high-resolution movies of what we call solar storms. this is a solar prominence that you are seeing. these are dozens of times the size of the earth and comes from superheated gas escaping from the gravity of the sun. some of this gets thrown off toward us. we are interested in knowing why the storms happen, and how to predict them better. the eclipse gives us a chance to see barry up close to the edge of the sun where we can see this type of solar activity. >> so cool. i love that video. i know a lot of folks will be disappointed in the united states that we can see this eclipse. when is the next one we can see in the united states, specifically the southeast? >> mark your calendars for next august 2017. on august 21, 2017 we have a wonderful thing going on. the shadow of the moon will united states. in the southeast it goes across the carolinas, comes across charleston, south carolina is the end of the eclipse. 2017, august 21, should not be a short drive. get yourself into that pack of totality. >> a first steps that many people need education. as our health team's dr. allen mask tells us, there is a new unc study to find the best medication for parents. >> ic diabetic patients most everyday in my office. millions have new onset of symptoms like frequent urination and excessive thirst, both hallmark to the disease. diet and exercise are extremely important, but a majority of the patients also need medications. finding the right drugs to control blood sugar can be a big challenge. most patients with diabetes the first line of eatment is a medication called meformin. there are several seconds wear scrubs with advantages and disadvantages. >> we do not have adequate head- to-head trials to prove that one is clearly the best way for the general population. >> reporter: dr. john buse is director of the unc diabetes unit. he leads a global research effort to find the best second drug choice to control blood sugar levels and help normalize body weight. he was part of a study published in the journal of the american medic aocti that looked at adding insulin or another medication also an injectable called ideglira. >> after six months of follow- up, patients on the ideglira got too much better levels of overall blood sugar control. and, they achieve those better and weight loss instead of weight gain. >> reporter: the goal is to balance blood sugar levels, preventing extreme highs or lows. >> we really worry about the rare situation where we fix the high blood sugar, but we create a serious problem with low blood sugar that frankly is a big threat to life. >> reporter: not only did the drug, ideglira, control blood sugar levels, they also saw a reduction in systolic blood pressure. dr. pugh says the drug is under review by the fda and could be available in the country later this year. >> what is the most important diabetes? >> we are working very hard to find a cure for diabetes. the corner. until that is found, we are looking for medications to lower the blood sugar so that we can minimize complications like blindness and amputations. that dr. points out that earlier in his practice he saw these complications, but they new therapies. the study arms doctors with better evidence as how to better treat diabetic patients without dropping the blood sugar level too low. there are other studies on the horizon. there is an intensive study called the great study which we have reported on in the past. it is an international study involving thousands of patients that should help us better decide which of the best drugs used to treat diabetes and in what order. the only problem is, the study does not end until the year 2022. it will be sometime before we have that information back. this is really ominous with better knowledge as to what drugs have an incredible range this time of year. we could have snow or almost 90 degrees in march. talk about springlike weather. this high pressure system is what we can think for the dry conditions that we will see all the way from now through friday or possibly saturday. there is some ring back to the well, maybe even some severe weather here. but the high holds all of that back to the west and does not let it advance. this type will begin by friday or saturday, letting some of that moisture finally approach us. that high keeps us nice and dry for the next several days. you can see from this afternoon, lunchtime through 5:00, nothing but clear skies, clear overnight tonight except for some patchy fog along the coast. then we're looking at a bright sunny day wednesday and thursday along
