stopped in north carolina wednesday. republican mike pence was in raleigh for an event at the hilton midtown off wake forest road. this is his secd carolina this week - monday he stopped in charlotte and fletcher. democratic vice presidential candidate tim kaine was also in north carolina wednesday. he made an appearance near charlotte. kaine toured an area restaurant then spoke at a rally for the state democratic party at davidson college. this was his fifth stop in the state since joining the ticket. candidates for senate in north carolina made it clear where they stand on the presidential race. senator richard burr and former democratic state representative deborah ross debated thursday night. care and house bill two. both candidates support their party's nominee for president. the debate was held at unc-tv's studios. it was sponsored by the north carolina association of broadcasters education foundation. jurors in the chandler kania trial will resume deliberations monday. they went home friday without a verdict after nearly 9 hours of deliberation. kania is charged with killing 3 people in a 20-15 drunk driving crash. the jury must decide between second- manslaughter or not guilty. kania already pleaded guilty to 9 other charges in connection with the crash. if convicted of second degree murder, he could face up to 60 years in prison. we're just beginning to tally the costs of hurricane matthew. the number of storm- related deaths in north carolina now stands at 26. fema teams are returning to shelters in cumberland and edgecombe counties. they want to help victims begin the application process for assistance. a judge has extended the voter hurricane matthew. last friday was the deadline -- but now residents of 36 counties have until wednesday. early voting begins thursday. the election is november 8th. with roads covered in high water, it's tough to navigate to even get a look at some of the worst damage. that's where sky 5 helps us take you there. wral's cullen browder took an aerial tour of hardest hit areas. the heart breaking images in princeville go from bad to worse. the historic town rebuilt after hurricane floyd now faces similar water covers 80 percent of the homes, businesses, and government buildings in town leaving rooftops as the only dry structures. next stop, greenville where parts of the airport remain underwater. muddy water encroaches on various neighborhoods, but dozens of homes on stilts rise above the flooding. on to goldsboro along the neuse river. parts of the city see floodwaters recede, but dealing with floating trash and half submerged homes and recreational vehicles. water continues to rush through the breach in the duke energy coal plant pond there. smart drivers think twice about testing the remaining floods. the highest water is just hitting kinston, swallowing up homes and businesses. tractor trailers couldn't make it out before the flooding flowed in. national guardsmen are there to help, but they can't hold back the rising rivers that continue their north carolina. the work to repair roads that hurricane matthew washed away, is just beginning. the damage is so extensive, even the d-o-t isn't sure how big the problems are. wral's brian shrader shows us how long you'll face detours. >> matthew took a big chunk of i-40 in johnston county. as the sun rose thursday, the heavy attacking roy cooper on the state crime lab. well, we know roy cooper and we know the problems he discovered when he became attorney general. roy found a backlog of over 5,000 dna test kits and years worth of shoddy investigations. but he cleared the backlog. and roy cooper helped us solve over 2,000 crimes and put 165 killers and rapists in prison from cold cases. narrator: what would you do if you were sent to washington? cut the debt? create some good jobs? you'd make people's lives better. in washington, richard burr has made his own life better. richard burr took 1.1 million dollars from the insurance industry and wrote a plan to privatize medicare. the insurance industry would make billions, while you pay more. richard burr. twenty years in washington... sky5 captured thousands of gallons of water flowing out of a cooling pond wednesday-- after part of the retaining wall gave way. wral alerted duke and state environmental officials -- who later acknowledged the breach. at the time, duke and state officials said there was no coal ash in the escaping water. but they now say floodwaters rose above and over one of the coal ash ponds inside that a pond hasn't collapsed. officials say they're not sure how much coal ash may have escaped. since matthew hit our state -- nearly 23- hundred people were saved by search and rescue teams. cullen browder talked to some of the people involved in those rescues. they came by boat and by air to pull north carolina flood victims to safety...23 hundred of them so far. the rescuers also came better organized, equipped, and trained than during hurricane unprepared. captain brett skinner leads the rocky mount swiftwater emergency rescue team, something that didn't exist during floyd. so now we're a little better experienced at it. - rocky mount now has 20 firefighters who volunteered for weeks of swiftwater training, specially designed dry suits for each team member, plus three boats ready to deploy into dangerous high water conditions. we had a team in from chapel hill to assist us. we had high lift vehicles in from the national from the national guard, along with what we have, along with our people who are better trained and performed flawlessly. cullen....do you think this storm could have been even more deadly than floyd without the swift water rescues? sprayberry....absolutely. state emergency management director mike sprayberry says highly trained teams helped make the difference. they provide the people that are actually in the teams and we're able to shop them out and put them into the fight. it's such a simple thing. it's such a simple concept, just don't drive in the water. that was cullen browder reporting... in addition to swift water rescue teams, emergency officials also point to the flood mapping technology as a part of the preparation improvements national guard troops are the only people allowed in and out of princeville following hur inspection, a school to the attorney general's office at 877-5-no scam. they've been investigating accused of gouging customers during last month's brief gas crisis. people in princeville, goldsboro, and kinston were told to get out before the water rises. those decisions to have people evacuate are all based on technology. wral's cullen browder explains how... after dozens died during hurricane floyd's flooding in 1999, north carolina emergency leaders invested in the flood inundation mapping and alert network we know exactly what the water's going to do on the property becas livable space is and we know the elevation of the water. the software considers topography, river bed depth and flow, soil, and solid surfaces... then factors in rainfall totals. it can predict what areas will flood when... down to the building to help get evacuations underway sooner. for instance, goldsboro.... there are 31 buildings impacted, but you predict there will be 131. right. it works in real time, too. as floodwaters swallowed up lumberton monday afternoon, emergency leaders knew which buildings and even the damage estimates. 945 buildings are flooding at the current time and the cost to repair that is 29.2 million dollars. the prediction models help downstream communities better react before the water rises i can tell you right now, kinston has not had the flooding that it will have. that's going to happen on the 14th. the software can't stop the flooding, but it can lead people to higher, safer ground. information...do you think it will save lives. i come to work everyday because it does save
