and 3: 30 this afternoon in our area including this one east of clayton involving a pick up. statewide that number of accidents is more than 1,000. we have team coverage of this winter storm starting with greg fishel. greg? >> all right deb from raleigh south and east this has transformed into a liquid event so nothing to worry about tonight but we'll talk about the areas that do have something to worry about in just a minute. here's the radar color coated so you can see the areas that are still experiencing freezing rain and drizzle and the green areas indicating in liquid form and that boundary will be moving to the north and west overnight. let's check out the current temperatures right now so basically if your air temperature is at 32 or higher the ice event is over. so rocky mount, the 31 you see there is actually at rdu close to 32 in raleigh itself. about. raleigh durham airport points north and west where it's 31 or lower there's a chance of a little bit of ice this evening before temperatures there go up and get above freezing overnight. let's take a look at the projection here. don't take it literally because the gradient is so tight it's tough to tell exactly where it will be on any one given hour but look at the overall trend into the evening. temperatures into the 50s south and east of here still in the mid 30s around roxboro and by morning the warm air over whelms everybody with temperatures in the 50s to near 60 when you get up tomorrow morning but look at that orange line representing a potential squall line of thunderstorms which could create gusty winds and might even be an isolated report or two of severe weather as that moves through. finally the rain gets out of here by mid to late morning clearing in the afternoon temperatures nice and mild and wintery conditions something or dread over the course of the next several days. back to you. thanks get. there's delays and closings coming in. orange county on a two hour dey and mecklenburg schools in virginia two hour delay and orange county. something you may notice if you are out tonight or for, wrecked cars abandoned along the sides of the road. some were towed away. others parked for pick up. catherine brown spotted several as she checked on road conditions in drive 5 out in western wake county right now. catherine. >> david we did pass so many of those accidents and one happened right in front of our vehicle so we could tell that drivers were struggling this morning. right now in drive 5 on north near carpenter road. conditions drastically improved we are seeing isolated slick spots. the roads are wet because of precipitation. we are not seeing the type of wide spread iciness that made the roads so dangerous for much of the day. a nasty trifecta of snow, sleet and freezing rain covering cars with a solid coating of ice and left those without a scraper out of luck. sterling carpenter scraped his car twice by hand. >> clean it off again to make the ride home a little bit easier. >> the morning ride was anything but easy. along i-40 dozens of cars skidded off the road through guardrails into ditches. >> hopefully it will melt away but right now it's still pretty slippery and could catch you off guard. >> right past the lake boom trail there was a car up the hill planted in the tree. it was hard. >> if driving was difficult walking was a challenge on it's own but navigating the sidewalk >> very icy. the walking like a penguin has helped me in many situations getting to and from. there was an exposed grate that almost caut me. >> he made it back to his office in one piece and managed to drive the day okay. but raleigh police say back to the driving situation raleigh police reported four times as many accidents today as it did this time last monday so really it has been a dangerous day and mperatures as the night gets darker just want to urge people to continue using a lot of caution. david? >> yeah and stay in if you can. >> sloan continues our team coverage in eastern wake county. several crashes in that area with significant damage and no life threatening injuries. sloan. >> yes the conditions are so much better here deborah and david. check it out this is a live west and the pavement is dry. it's remarkable what an improvement we've seen. the scene this morning was much different. several wrecks. problematic. there were several crashes there and we saw a police cruiser sliding on the road. no serious injuries with any of only property damage. here's another crash we want to show you what happened in nightdale at 8:00 a.m. on highway 264 involving a tractor trailer and at least three cars. fortunately no serious injuries with that wreck as well. and this other shot that we captured from our traffic camera on i-440 and the 64 bypass shows that a car went slipping and sliding into the cement wall on this over pass. you can only imagine how temporarily. >> i got up and started watching the news and knew i wasn't going anywhere. >> it was more black ice and it wasn't compacted just fishtail was pretty dangerous. it's gotten a lot better. >> back out here live on u.s. 64 you can see again that the roads are looking quite nice out here. and traffic is moving along at a normal pace. we are traveling just below 65 miles per hour right now. so if you are heading out in this area of wake county things are looking good. >> nice to see those dry roads. sloan thank you. and we just received word that person county schools will be delayed two hours as well so those school delays are starting to come in now. drive 5 just one resource we have for showing you live road conditions. dozens of cameras across our region. >> dave johnson looking--nate johnson is looking at conditions outside of the county. >> i wanted to start out with a lot of accidents across the afternoon. this is downtown having video issues this is downtown. main street and academy street you can see we are having issues with the camera but traffic moving along okay. we have had accidents across the area and given the smaller number of cars we have on the roads with the schools closed and a lot of folks staying home this is actually a pretty healthy number of accidents. a lot of folks on the roads so be careful and hit some of our areas edwards mill at reedy creek some areas with a little bit of ice and slush. this is far western wake county. things janelle wet but moving along okay. did have some issues with that one earlier. here's the cumberland county skyville road and notice the roads here almost look dry. we've had a little bit of it's since dried up. that's what we are seeing out there. the main roads are wet but the bridges are the areas with the most concern because the air temperature hovering right around freezing. those are the areas that will give us problems the longest especially from the triangle north and towards the west. back to you. >> nate thank you very much. as you can imagine weather like this made for a busy day for tow truck drivers. coming up at 5:15 the task of navigating slippery roads to pull cars from ditches and crash sites. closing arguments in the north hills murder trial were put on hold until tomorrow because of the wintery weather. some jurors in the trayvon smith case were unable to make it to court this morning. smith is charged with killing melissa hugins jones during a break in in 2013. the final witness testified. the defense did not present any evidence. an arrest death investigation. 27-year-old timothy lockleer is charged with first degree murder attempted rape and a body was found on nina road yesterday afternoon. they have not identified a victim or set a cause of death. a topic that draws deep police vision heard arguments for and against teacher tenure something latch makers tried to end in 2013. wral's colin brower is here to take us inside the supreme court debate. >> for the justices this is a question of contract law. in 2013 they passed legislation to out law career status for teachers. granted after four years that status eliminates job evaluations and adds due process if they want to fire a teacher. the legislation to abollish step your is a way to weed out because those are local. the attorney for the north carolina association of educator educators argued that the state did break it's promise to teachers and pulling tenure to those who work to get it is unconstitutional. an appeals panel sided with the veteran teachers saying the state couldn't ke away career status for those who earned it. the case was appealed and went before the supreme court today. this case only applies to retroactive cases doesn't impact new teachers because the law changes career status moving forward. the suspect is expected to take weeks if not months to rule. >> colin browner thank you. two men with ties in north carolina are about to embark on a business venture in a historic moment in
