back towards the center city skyline we'll see the clouds quickly increase today and all that cloud cover approaching from the west that will keep temperatures down, that and the fact that our winds have shifted out of the north northwest. yesterday we had a southerly breeze, and today we have a northwesterly breeze and the numbers will struggle to climb up into the mid 40s. millville 40, cape degrees. that's what it feels like with the wind in trenton. and as we take a look at the storm tracker we go out across the midwest, here's the system that we're watching, it's a very small area of low pressure. this is the piece of energy that the coastal storm needs to just blossom, suddenly bottom out and this is what's going to help to produce a major snowstorm for new england. they'll see a good 2-4 inches of snow in chicago, detroit, maybe as far south as cincinnati. why are we missing out on this snowstorm? here's the reason why. you can see the system. you see how it's racing across the plains and the heartland of the nation. it is moving from west to east. by the time it catches up to the coastal low, it's over new england. so new england sees the heavy snow. now in order for us to see the snow here, that piece of energy would have to dive down like this, then this area of low pressure develops down here and that comes up. we didn't miss it by much, but we missed out by 100-150 miles or so. so new england is going to pick up a white christmas this year. we'll see a little bit of snow tonight but most of us are going to see rain. by 7:00 this evening, it's cloudy, a little bit of light rain shower activity. maybe some snowflakes flying north and west. but this will quick up in intensity as the coastal feature starts to get going. by 9:00 it's snowing moderately in allentown, reading, the poconos, cold rain for areas south of the pennsylvania turnpike but that rain-snow line lifts during the evening hours. by midnight mass it's probably up to the tunnel here in the lehigh valley. still snowing in the poconos but that's about it. then the system hits new england and it starts to intensify. boston, burlington those areas are picking up at least 6 inches of snow. the winds start howling out of the northwest and that will keep temperatures tomorrow only in the mid to upper 30s. wind chills in the teens and 20s all day long. how much snow are we talking about? this is a rain event for the i-95 corridor. perhaps a coating for places like potstown, quaker town. the only area that has a chance to see snow on the ground tomorrow morning will be the lehigh valley and poconos a good 1-2 inches up there. then a wind advisory goes into effect. gusts 40-45 miles per hour for the entire area. the exception being lancaster county. wind chills are going
