eye of the storm pummel coastal cities. overnights violent winds along the beaches, gusts in some places clocking in above 70 miles per hour. the storm bringing the look and sound of fireworks in the form of downed power lines, thousands facing outages. officials fearing up to 3 million may end up in the dark. the national weather service say matthew will be devastating. florida's governor making this dire warning. >> unfortunately this is going to kill people. >> reporter: already it has, matthew taking the lives of 100 people as it swept through haiti. the death toll skyrocketing as the floodwaters recede. matthew battering the about bahs before heading to florida. residence in florida preparing filling up the final sandbags. stores boarded up, shelves bare. 3 million people under to evacuate here and in the carolinas, everybody left town, everything is boarded up, i'm waiting. >> reporter: many getting out. clocking the highways for miles. 4,000 flights have been canceled. >> a major concern now, the storm surge. where i am along the coast of florida it's expected to be 6 to ten feet or more. here there's a waterway behind me. the water continues to rise, flooding the area, the dock behind me you can see is already submerged. lauren lister, abc news. >> hurricane matthew is forcing airlines to cancel or delay thousands of flights. here's a live look at philadelphia international airport. anyone trying to get to florida and georgia and south carolina may have seen their flights canceled. they have 28 cancellations in philadelphia right now. major airlines are offering waivers for people flying into areas impacted by the hurricane. if you have a place to fly along the lower east coast today check with your airline before leaving. >> meanwhile, a large group of rescuers and crews are going to florida to help with what they know will be a massive recovery effort. katherine scott is live with details from tacony, good morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tam, in the areas where the hurricane is expected to hit, state and local authorities are going to be overwhelmed. teams are going south across the country including from our area. they left around midnight. a group of philadelphia firefighters spent hours in tacony packing the gear and vehicles before setting off on the 15 hour trip with hurricane matthew looming, crews from our area are heading south with what's expected to be a massive recovery effort. the firefighters are part of pennsylvania task force one, a fema founded group of 80 members whole fan out across florida to assist. this is one of 11 such teams around the country heading to florida. >> a lot of task force members are philadelphia firefighters and medics, emts and we have folks from baltimore county and harrisburg. this is truly pennsylvania task force one. >> reporter: pennsylvania chapter of red cross are sending volunteers. denise and robert are traveling to columbia, south carolina and be there for the next several weeks in whatever position they are needed. >> we'll be running food back and forth for feeding in the shelters. we won't be out in the field of this yet. it depends on how badly the storm hits and how many people go back home. >> later on this morning, a team of 160 employees and contractors from peco will be heading down south from flew to georgia depending on where they are expensive scores. the potential cost of repairing or replacing homes could top $100 billion. katrina was ranked as the most expensive storm $153 billion in damage. stocks were little changed yesterday as investors wait for the september jobs report due to be released this morning. futures are pointing to a lower open. september jobs report is expected to show 175,000 jobs will be added last month. we'll be watching that in the next couple of hours. >> in the meantime we're talking about matthew. >> reporter: matthew is a big problem in florida, georgia, coast of south carolina and north carolina. around here, no rain. as we look outside we have sunshine coming up over the horizon shortly, dry conditions and tranquil conditions with light winds. it chilly as you head out the door. allentown, 46 degrees on the thermometer. 51 in reading, 5 in philadelphia. 52 in wilmington, 49 in trenton. 54 in millville. low 60s down the shore. satellite and radar nothing going on locally. there might be a sweep of cloud cover coming in during the day. we expect no worse than partly sunny skies, this thicker cloud cover is related to matthew as these spin i don't have showers, up in the phoenixville, collegeville, pottstown coming in from those areas you'll be looking at that. accident i-95 northbound, the on-ramp 1 # 1 new castle delaware. look for this accident, i-95 it's on the shoulder, so traffic is getting by on the ramp. you have to be careful. another accident in delaware, wilmington and lancaster pike southbound at chestnut run lane. in the commuter traffic report we found someone talking about an accident 322 concorpsed conquered township. one point, 3 miles in lang, 3 miles in atlantic city. ten miles at philadelphia international. no problems there. cooler
