Warm weather means more children are swimming but how do you keep your infants safe in the water . Some parents opt to get them water safety lessons and parents get tips, too. Erin ohearn has that story tonight. Reporter the warm weather is here and that means pool time. Perhaps no one is more excited than young kids but remember swimming is dangerous. In fact drowning is the number one cause of death of children under four years old thats why every year its important to reteach them those water safety skills. The millers backyard pool is a place for family and friends. I would never leave my kids and go inside but i feel perfectly safe that my girls if they were to fall in this pool or somebody elses pool or water anywhere that they would know exactly what to do. Reporter jennifer signs them up for a refresher course every two months with instructor christine simpson. Their body weights change they grow they want to be able to float. Reporter simpson says regardless of how a child learns to swim its important to reassess skills on a regular basis especially after winter months. Parents cant assume that they are going to be at the skill level they were at when they get back in the pool the next summer without any kind of lesson imlike with any break in practice swim skills can be lost which can can give kids a false sense of security. The first few swims simpson recommends keeping children within arms length and make sure their breathing is under control. You want to make sure that their kicking is behind them and not under them. You never want your children to be in a vertical position. That is the position of drowning. So, really having your kids swimming horizontally is so key. Reporter parents need to remember their role especially at the beach where both the current and the crowds are an issue. Everyone assumes everybodys watching everybodys kids. You cannot assume that. What you want to do is assign a water watcher and every 15 minutes change out that adult. Reporter she encourages parents to keep a close eye on jumping into the pool. Tell your kids to jump out not vertically avoiding pencil jumps. Instead give them a safe target to hit that is far from the steps or any corner of the pool.
