double scan showing that we are seeing the rain across cape may cumberland, kent and southern new castle county in delaware but mainly this has been a snow event and some of the snow is heavy. storm tracker 6 live double scan showing where you see this purple color this pinkish color this is where you have the greatest lift, you have the heaviest precipitation and this snow is falling at the rate of about 1 to 2 inches per hour primarily in burlington county. this is the heaviest snow and this band will continue to push to the east and we'll gradually see that snow tapering off from the west to the east as we head through the evening hours. the visibility definitely affected by the snow. visibility down to a half mile in philadelphia, allentown and trenton also a half mile, 3 miles in wilmington and 1.3-mile visibility in reading. temperatures most of our viewing area right around freezing. the exception wildwood, 37 and dover 35 degrees. that's where we're getting the rain. once the clouds clear out temperatures will be dropping across-the-board well below freezing. so, this is a heavy wet snow. this is not a fun snow to shovel but you want to do that tonight and treat your sidewalks and your driveways because everything will be freezing up solid tonight. it will melt tomorrow but tonight could be problems. so, this is what to expect. that snow ending from the west to the east between 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock around 7 o'clock or 8 o'clock in philadelphia. temperatures dropping below freezing. any of that standing slush will be icing over so roads will get slick tonight. the good news is i am tracking a relatively warm first day of spring. i'll have details on that in the full accuweather forecast. monica. >> we'll look forward to that. thank you cecily. let's switch to david henry live in center city and most folks are just not thrilled at all with today's snow david. >> reporter: yeah, monica it has been tough out here for pedestrians and drivers. the streets are sunshine covered but traffic is moving out here. most seem to be shrugging it off though knowing that this is a last gasp of winter not the first. the snow removal gear got one last workout today. we should be stashing the shovels and plows and dragging out the rakes and brooms and we should be stuffing those big coats back in the closet but not quite yet. is it hard to put it away? >> no. >> reporter: you're going to hang onto it. >> i'm going to hang onto it for another week and then i'm going to put it awayism anxious to get the spring clothes out. >> oh, absolutely. >> reporter: not all are hanging onto the heavy societies coats. for some, it's mind over matter. >> i'm actually hot. i'm not cold. i don't think it's cold outside, it's just snowing that's it. it's not really cold. >> reporter: not bothering you too much. >> not at all. >> reporter: all you need is an umbrella today. >> right, that's all i need, yes. >> reporter: some got caught off guard a little too eager to welcome spring. >> i had a class at 8 o'clock and it only started flurrying then. i didn't decide to bring a hat but i definitely should have. >> reporter: no tip toeing through the tulips for these folks today. they were picking their way carefully along the slush covered streets and sidewalks. you're done with it. >> i am, i am. i thought it was over and then woke up this morning and there was all this white stuff. >> reporter: it may have been cold and wet outside but that didn't stop plenty of folks for lining up for something cold and wet at this water ice stand where they were giving it away free to celebrate spring. what kind of mom on you? >> i'm an awesome mom. >> reporter: aren't you supposed to be feeding these kids hot soup today. >> well, thought it would be a good treat to come out in the snow and get some free italian ice. >> reporter: how refreshing is that. >> it's awesome. >> reporter: cooling you down pretty good. >> i'm bone chilling cold. "action news" reporter vernon odom is live along woodcrest avenue in overbrook where the crime happened with the very latest tonight. vernon. >> reporter: rick, it is very calm and quiet here along woodcrest avenue in overbrook tonight. there's a certain serenity here but the trauma is far from gone in the wake of the violence that erupted here just over a week ago. police say the overnight arrest of 15-year-old tyfine hamilton wraps up their week long manhunt for three murder suspects. over brook's james stuhlman was shot and killed as he walked his dog through the neighborhood. surveillance video indicated it was a robbery attempt. police were soon able to focus on hamilton and his high school mate brandon smith who is locked up as well. a 14-year-old is also in custody. overnight in the 2800 block of midvale hamilton's parents surrendered him to a heavily armed contingent of police. >> they saw the father, they actually talked to the father. the father said he's not here but he called the mother who lives up in the west oak lane area and they arranged for a meet in the 2800 block of midvale avenue. >> reporter: hamilton and smith are charged here as adults. both police say have prior arrest records for robbery. during the police investigation a raid on the girard avenue home of the 14-year-old yielded a large cache of weapons including ass salt rifles and handguns. >> obviously we'll turn the information over to the atf and they'll start an investigation to try to find out where these guns are and how they're getting them. >> reporter: some of stuhlman's neighbors are in shock and word of the final arrest is little relief. >> just very traumatizing for all of us. that's all. >> reporter: the suspects are telling police it was a random robbery attempt after a night of playing basketball. they fled with nothing. >> here is a guy that according to what i'm hearing asked that they not kill him but they shot him anyway. i mean what's that all about? >> reporter: police sources tonight tell me they have full confessions from all three suspects in custody and they have a strong lead now on where the actual murder weapon is. live in overbrook vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> okay, vernon thank you. from our delaware news room now a message from the heart as teenagers speak out against violence. students at parkway academy north in wilmington braved the cold and the snow to voice their concerns about what's happening in their community. and it was all that was the up by the students themselves. the movement is called #302 guns down. students at the school say they are tired of losing friends and loved ones to gun violence. they want to be a part of the solution. so they met with the police officers assigned to their school to make their mission known. at a rally today they released balloons kicking off #302 guns down. >> as a whole we should move together because the shooting is not going to stop unless we drop it in people's minds that, you know, we're just killing each other. >> we can make a difference. we can sit there and be who we want to be other than selling drugs, being a drug dealer, having guns to protect ourselves we can do something different with our lives. we can become lawyers doctors or artists. >> the students of parkway academy north say this campaign is personal to them and they want to take their neighborhoods back and rick, school leaders members of city council and the wilmington police department are behind these students. they're also dozens of residents who showed up to support this gun downs movement monica. >> thank you sharrie. back to practice for villanova today after quite a win last night. the wildcats had one of their most lopsided tournament victories over lafayette. now the march madness continues with a date against nc state tomorrow. jeff skier ski live with more on saturday's big game. hi jeff. >> hey, monica. villanova just a win a way from the sweet 16 for the first time since 2009 for this group these players they have never been there. ryan arcidiacono was just a kid at neshaminy high school back then watching villanova on tv. now he can help them advance with a win over nc state tomorrow. take a look at villanova. what a win last night against lafayette. up as many as 45 points. they ended up with their second most lopsided win in nova's ncaa tournament history. they shot 63 percent in a big w but now it is on to nc state for a second they thought they would get lsu but nc state won an amazing comeback in the final minute to beat lsu so it will be the wolf pack and nova coach jay wright believes they are good enough to get to the final four. >> i think they've developed a great balance that makes them -- i'm sure that's what they've been going for all year. that seconds half their guards weren't making shots and they were doing work on the offensive glass and their forward were making plays so it's not -- what we have to be concerned about is it's not what they've done all year it's what they did in that second half and how much that's going to be a factor in this game. >> reporter: so, what does jay wright and villanova know about nc state? not much. they've only played once since 1973. association jay wright and these players watching a lot of film. we'll have much more on that coming up later in monica. very slow going out there. of course we have very slick roads on the schuylkill expressway. these are our westbound lanes right at montgomery. we have an accident off to the right shoulder. we're seeing accidents pop you will all over the region right now. you can see taking you 48 minutes to go from the blue route down to the vine eastbound lanes. that's one of our larger delays. over in vineland new jersey 47 at 674 we have another incident to report to you. and new jersey turnpike northbound and southbound we have speeds reduced to 45 miles per hour. on the garden state parkway we also have speeds reduced to 35 miles per hour. the area bridges all have fog so you want to keep reduced speeds there., see we're on the ben franklin bridge here and it's 25 miles per hour. so, gorman joins us with what you need to know. >> hi, guys. it's obvious many people are squeamish about getting a colonoscopy. about 65 percent of adults who should be screened are getting screened but it's a procedure that can save your life. so a local doctor has tips to make it easier. >> it was on the list. >> joanne vanderslice turned 50 this year. it was time for her first colonoscopy. the goal of the procedure is to look for polyps, those are precursors to colorectal cancer. she found one on this exam and removed it. there by significantly cutting the risk for cancer. the problem is many people never get screened. one excuse is the preparation. the doctor says things have changed. >> the day of the gallon jug is not the only they know that we have to offer for patients. >> reporter: you can ask your gastro enterologist about your options. when drinking any of the solutions the doctor has these tips. you can mix it with a drink you like as long as it's clear and nonalcoholic. >> i tell patients as long as you can read a newspaper through the solution, you can have it. also to keep the solution cold, keep it in the refrigerator and then they can also drink the solution through a straw to bypass the taste buds. >> reporter: the prep is vital so make sure you follow directions exactly. there are also newer less invasive procedures such as a virtual colonoscopy using a cat scan. >> screening of any type is better than no screening at all. >> reporter: and with those less invasion tiff procedures, if a polyp is found you will need a traditional colonoscopy but again, it could save your life and this is a message that that hundreds of people will be driving home on sunday for the get your rear in gear race. we have all this information on recently filed class action lawsuit claims more than 25 california winemakers are selling bottles that have dangerous levels of arsenic. that lawsuit targets inexpensive but popular brands like trader joe's and franz y trader joe's says they're looking into the claims. franzia says the allegations are false and that's wine is safe. well, there were smiles and hups all around today at drexel university college of medicine in east falls. that's because it's match day for the fourth year medical students. more than 250 students simultaneously opened their envelopes to learn where they will spend the next few years. the letters are from institutions inviting medical students to join residency programs. >> ♪♪ >> graco has been fined $10 million for delaying reports of car seek buckle complaints. the company will pay $3.3 million fine and invest $7 million in child passenger safety programs and education. that's the agreement made with the national traffic highway safety administration. graco recalled more than 6 million child safety seats last year because of a defective latch that can trap children. >> thousands of senior citizens will continue to get hot healthy meals thanks to the renewal of a federal graduate. congressman chaka fattah made the announcement today. the money will go to rscp philadelphia which provides some 70,000 meals to home bound seniors who can't shop for themselves. the organization is marking march for meals month to call attention to issues of senior hunger. >> up next at 5:00 we'll check the latest snowy forecast from come right back >> time for accuweather at the "action news" big board. meteorologist cecily tynan with more on the spring snow. >> yes we're in the final hours of winter and winter is not giving up without a fight. storm tracker 6 live double scan a lot going on on double scan right now. first of all, you can see western berks county and lancaster county this snow is ending. that's back edge of the snow and that will continue to push to the east. you can also see the pink and that's the heavier snow over burlington county, parts of ocean county and then you can see that we are getting that rain line slowly advancing to the north from the shore as the easterly winds begin to take over. another way we can show this with our storm tracker, this is called correlation coefficient. this is a different mode. it examines how similar the particles are falling from the sky. all the pink you see there that's the snow but where you get that jagged line that's where we're getting the mix of the snow and rain and even some sleet in parts of wilmington right now and that line really won't make it much farther up to the north. most of the region, though, this is a wet snow, great for making snow men and maria sent this on my facebook page from west chester. she said forget spring, she's ready to bounce right into summer building a snow man or snow woman i should say already to hit the beach. you're going to have to wait on that for awhile, though. snowfall amounts 3 to 6 inches pretty much the call right now skippack 5.6 media delaware county 5-inches, hilltown township 5-inches, west chester 3.4-inches of snow. in delaware claymont 2.6 estell manor in new jersey 1.6, washington township 3.5 and ewing, new jersey, reporting 3.2-inches of snow. right now the problem will be the falling temperatures once the snow moves out. philadelphia 33 degrees. allentown 32. wilmington 33. millville 34. and trenton 32 degrees but once the clouds clear the temperatures will really drop off. future tracker showing by 9 o'clock, this is when most of the precipitation will be off shore. could have a few lingering flurries or some light rain showers across the shore but generally things will be drying out between 6:00 and 9 o'clock tonight. and then the temperatures dropping. allentown the low 27 degrees. philadelphia 32. millville 30. trenton 31 degrees. so, you do want to clear that slush off your sidewalks your driveways tonight because anything standing there will be freezing over solid tonight. the good news is though, everything melts tomorrow. it turns warmer. 55 degrees. the union game has been rescheduled for 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from tonight. that was a good call. and then on sunday, brisk and colder 45 degrees. monday temperatures drop down to 42 degrees. and then temperatures begin to climb up somewhat. 46 degrees on tuesday. and wednesday finally back to where we should be for this time of the year, 55 degrees, increasing clouds. 60-degree weather on the way on thursday. however, it will come with a trade-off. adam will explain that in the accuweather 7-day forecast. >> we don't want a trade-off. >> you get what you get, okay. >> okay. what's happening on "action news" tonight. winter's last gasp before we say hello to spring. snow continues to fall across the area. we'll tell you when it is moving out. plus, new information tonight about a shocking discovery in mississippi. a man found dead hanging from a tree. and the search is on for two guys that took out their frustration on jim's stakes on south street. >> now the details. the official start of spring is at 6:45 tonight just a little over an hour from now. however if you look out your window or behind us it certainly doesn't look like spring is approaching. >> just trust us it is. the entire area has had much snow during the day with a few pockets of sleet and rain causing some problems on area roads right now. >> take a live look at those road conditions through mobile6. this is going south on the blue route. the roads are wet but not that slushy. you need to be careful if you're heading out. in new jersey state police have reported more than 132 crashes and 172 calls for help since the storm started. >> let's head over to meteorologist adam joseph live at the "action news" big board with the latest from double scan raid today. hi, adam. >> with that higher march sun angle still the radiation comes through the clouds helping those major highways just to be wet this afternoon. a lot of slush though on many of the side streets and we're looking at double scan live radar and there you can see the line, rain to the south snow off to the north and as we get a closer look here in the western suburbs of philadelphia throughout pennsylvania, that snow is about to end in coatesville and downingtown. it is ending in reading and that line continues to push to the east. the heaviest of the snow is now also east of philadelphia. as we take a look at parts of new jersey from medford lakes browns mills right along route 70 it's a heavy wet snow. the heaviest bursts moving away from center city and this is where we're seeing a little bit of sleet mixing in near wilmington around glassboro and you head due east just north of surf city and south of there, it is a heavy rain as you're heading south on the atlantic city expressway and in southern locations it will be ending over the next few hours. well, the timing of that ending for all locations and we'll talk about a warmup with melting going on here for your at a tree. was it suicide or a hate crime? investigators in port gibson have identified the man as 54-year-old otis byrd. someone found his body hanging by a bed sheet from a tree him a few hundred yards from his home. byrd was jailed previously for murder in the 1980's but authorities say it's too soon to tell whether he was the victim of a hate crime or if he committed suicide. officials say an autopsy is being performed right now. the results should be released next week. in the meantime 30 fbi agents and local law enforcement from trying to identify byrd's friends and familiar who may be able to help paint a picture about the cause of death. >> a shocking road rage incident in houston texas. a woman was shot in the head is that fighting for her life in the hospital. houston police say the woman was honking her horn at another driver who had sideswiped several vehicles. that suspected driver put out a gun and fired. the victim was shot in the back of her head but still managed to call 911. police found her several minutes later and rushed her to the hospital where she's in critical condition. the search meantime continues for the gunman and police are hoping nearby surveillance cameras captured the shooting. world news tonight with david muir will have the latest on the search for the gunman in this texas road rage shooting. you can watch that at 6:30 following "action news" at 6:00. >> bucks county authorities identified two people killed in a violent crash last night in feasterville. it happened about 8 o'clock along street road near philmont. a large suv careened out of control, jumped the concrete median then crashed into oncoming traffic. 64-year-old sharon vince and 79-year-old charles rochelle both of fairless hills were killed. the driver of the suv was injured. police have not released her name but do believe alcohol was a factor. investigators are trying to determine what sparked a fire that killed an elderly man in south philadelphia. this the scene late last night in the 2500 block of south warnock street. heavy flames and smoke poured from the windows on the second and third floors. it took firefighters 30 minutes to put it out. during a search of the home they found the victim on the top floor. no one else was hurt. lower merion township detectives are hoping that someone recognizes a man who tried to rob a bank this morning. it happened at the citizens bank branch at 15 west city avenue in bala cynwyd at 11:00 a.m. the suspect in these photos walked in and allegedly handled the teller a demand note but he eventually ran away with nothing. if you recognize this man please contact lower merion township police. >> the family of the comedian killed in the crash that seriously injured tracy morgan has been awarded $10 million. court papers out of westchester county new york show that wal-mart is paying the amount to the children of james mcnair. he was killed back on june 7th after a wal-mart truck slammed into a limo bus on the new jersey turnpike. a lawyer for morgan says he is happy the children are being well compensated. he and two others involved in the crash have also sued wal-mart. from our delaware news room tonight police found more than 300 bags of heroin on a man after he allegedly resisted arrest during a traffic stop. police say louis williams junior was inside a vehicle they pulled over yesterday for a traffic violation. officers asked williams to step out of the car. that's when police say he began fighting with the officers. police had to use a taser to subdue him. williams was searched and police found 301 bags of heroin in his possession. he now faces several drug related charges. >> a night out for two friends in philadelphia got out of hand when they apparently decided to attack a south street main stay jim's steaks and a surveillance camera outside the restaurant captured their antics on tape. now this video was taken around 3:00 a.m. on sunday morning outside jim's steaks at fourth and south. you can see two men, one with a short-sleeve shirt and one with a cream colored sweater talking to two others. then the man in the short-sleeve shirt starts banging on the win coast to restaurant. he continues off and on for about a minute and then his friend in the sweater backs up and charges the window and then both ran off. both front windows were shattered causing thousands of dollars in damage. jim's steaks president kenneth silver turned social media instead of the police to find out who is responsible. >> the police have enough to worry about dealing with serious crime as you guys cover every day and i was more concerned about them wasting their time trying to handle something that i thought we could hangy handle pretty well on social media. >> okay, silver says he's willing to let by gones be by gones if the vandals step forward and pay for the damage but if they do not and someone turns them in, he says he then will go ahead and file a police report. we'll see how it turns out monica. >> thank you sharrie. well, a proud day for some of trenton's finest. 18 police sergeants lieutenants and captains were formally promoted this afternoon. city officials family friends were at trenton city hall to celebrate. officials say several of the honorees were getting promotions restored after they were demoted during the budget crisis in 2011. the group included the city's first latino police captain. >> time for an update on the highways and by ways on a friday night. >> autumn marisa in for matt pelman. >> hi monica and rick. slick conditions out there and slow speeds. we're on the schuylkill expressway here right at montgomery. we've had an accident clear in the westbound lanes which are our headlights here and as you can see it's taking you 43 minutes in those eastbound lanes heading into the city from the blue route town to the vine street expressway. little bit better in those westbound lanes, 25 minutes there. let's take a look across the region on the big picture. you can see 24 miles per hour on the blue route. that's a very slow ride from the schuylkill down to 95 right now. slow going from the pennsylvania turnpike in those eastbound lanes as you approach 202 up to the schuylkill expressway. and again 9 miles per hour on 95. so, with the weather out there, keep the speeds slow. we've seen accidents all over the region just like this one on 476 southbound approaching the mid-county tolls. so again, a litany of accidents on the secondary roads. new jersey turnpike northbound and southbound speeds are restricted to 45 miles per hour. and on the garden state parkway we are down to 35 miles per hour. taking a look at the area bridges, we have fog restrictions and speed stressed his commitment to the importance of early childhood education today. the governor spoke to the delaware valley so, for the education of young children. the organization is part of a statewide campaign trying to ensure that every three and four-year-old gets access to prek. wolf told the educators that investing in the state's children is an investment in the future. >> the insight that i want to bring to harrisburg is the insight i got in the private sector and that is it's not just right, it is. and you're right to want to do it and it is a noble calling. but investing in early childhood education is also really smart. >> the governor's budget includes a $120 million increase in early childhood education with the goal of enrolling 14,000 additional children. >> wow. turning was pretty much a gimme that villanova was going to win their first round matchup. what is comforting is that they looked really good doing so. our jeff skversky live in pittsburgh where the road only gets tougher from here for villanova. hey, jeff. >> hey jamie. much tougher tomorrow at 7:10 for villanova but what a start to this thing. the sweet 16, villanova is trying to get there for the first time in six years but that is not the goal here. villanova star j'vonne pinkston says the sweet 16 would be nice but he really wants to take this team to the final four. all right, one step at a time. let's take a look at villanova today after their practice as they get set for nc state. the next step in this thing would be the sweet 16 with a win over the wolf pack tomorrow. nova has won a school record 33 games. in facts it is the most by a division one philly school ever. but this team is expected to go to the final four so getting the sweet 16 at least validate what this team has accomplished? >> we validate ourselves by looking each other in the eyes in the locker room and knowing that we gave it up for each other. >> it's great that we broke the school record. i think we're always remember that but that can't help us now one game at a time now and i think nc state is going to give us a great game. >> we'll judge ourselves on how we play. we know we've had a great year so far. we hope to just try to continue it. >> as soon as villanova won last night they went right back to the hotel to watch the nc state-lsu finish. just as they started to prepare for lsu nc state window just yet as spring will be put on delay over the next week to week and a half. temperature-wise we're near freezing right now north of philadelphia. at or just above freezing down to the south. but as the system departs and the precipitation ends over the next hour or two temperatures will drop below freezing overnight so anything that is slushy will freeze solid overnight so watch for black ice as well, 30 millville, 27 allentown and even wilmington below freezing. tomorrow we hit 55 degrees ahead of our next front so it is warmer. a lot of clouds and pops of sun. there could be an evening shower with this front and as that slips through, high pressure comes in on sunday from canada and between this high and the departing beast of a storm that develops in eastern can today, it out of control this afternoon, flipped over and burst into flames off the side of the road. this happened westbound in hamilton township atlantic county. killed were a man and a woman. state police have yet to determine the specific cause of the accident but they are saying that people are driving too fast on the expressway given the conditions today. and the conditions were bad enough that a medical helicopter couldn't fly to the scene. the victims had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. two lanes of the westbound expressway were shut down for hours. a big problem a big mess and death on the atlantic city expressway today. that tragedy marked the final dave winter literally. spring begins in 45 minutes. but old man winter is being dragged out kicking and screaming. we're getting hit by a substantial snowstorm and here in allentown they had to deal with whiteout conditions. some communities are getting close to 6-inches in the lehigh valley but spring is almost here
