And there you see Tropical Storm warnings in effect. But i do have this report now on and where its going right now. Reporter Tropical Storm hermine roared into charleston, south carolina, bringing wind gusts more than 50 miles per hour. We are expecting serious winds, serious rainfall that can lead to flash flooding. Reporter the storm made landfall over night near the Florida Panhandle as a category one hurricane. The first for florida in more a 7 foot storm surge and several inches of rain flooded streets, downed trees, knocked out power to more than 100,000 residents. Here in charleston, the wind has been picking up all day and now heavy rain. This area could see up to nine inches by the time hermine moves on. Gordon and bonnie gear spent the morning securing the house that has been in the family for 150 years, but theyre not worried. Been there, done that a couple of times. So it shouldnt its just the win. Its easy. As long as its not a lot of rain. Reporter whats left of hermine could cause big problems for the Labor Day Weekend throughout the northeast. The storm is expected to stall off the midatlantic coast bringing heavy surf and spreading rain through mid week. New york city major has closed beaches for sunday, possibly through wednesday because of rip currents. If you go in the water, youre putting your life in danger. Its as simple as that. Heightened patrol started at 12 00 this morning. So sergeant rob gable with ohio Highway Patrol says youll see a much larger Law Enforcement presence. I can say for sure we will have more people on the roadway all weekend long. All of our troopers are encouraged to set aside effort to be out on the road for their entire shift. Reporter the enforcement lasts until Tuesday Morning at 12 00. So what are they going to be looking for . Looking for people who are abusing speed. People who are not wearing their seatbelt, which is a big concern for us and contributes to a lot of injuries and fatalities nationwide, statewide, worldwide. And also looking for impaired driving. Reporter drunk and drug driving are way too common on a Holiday Weekend. So sergeant gable warns if y your car to your destination before the drinking sets in. If you are out this weekend, we would suggest that you make a plan. If youre going to be drinking, then dont drive. Have a plan. Please dont drive to a venue expecting that after you drink youre going to get a ride from either a taxi or a service. Brock turner has been released from jail. The ex stanford swimmer sparked an outcry when he was sentenced to six months when he sexually assaulted an unconscious woman. He only served half that time. 21yearold brock turner walked out of a jail friday. He was released on Good Behavior after serving just three months behind bars. Thats only half of a six month sentence already under fire as too lenient. The ex Stanford University swimmer was convicted of Sexual Assault of an unconscious woman january of 2015. The case exploded nationally amid criticism of the judges sentencing in the case. As a statement from the victims swept through social media. Efforts to recall, the judge removed himself hearing criminal cases starting next week. Turner faces three years of supervised probation and must register as a sex offender for life. Hes said to be heading to dayton, ohio, to live with his parents. His lawyers indicate he will appeal his conviction. So this week california, the assembly there, voted 660 to toughen mandatory prison sentences for the same crime.
