" local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" stephanie/2shot good evening. welcome to local 5 news. i'm stephanie angleson. jack/2shot and i'm jack miller. on tonight for two men who escaped from the newton correctional release facility stephanie: officers discovered saturday night during a routine count that michael amodeo was missing... and during a second count... it became apparent a second inmate... jessy foley was also gone. and tonight... a local organization says they know why these inmates got away.... budget cuts... local fives nikki davidson explains. nikki/bam: right the union that represents the employees at the department of corrections says theres simply not enough staffing at the facilities... they're not surprised these two men were able to escape... and they even expect more inmates will get away in the future... it wasn't long ago that danny homan was a employee for the department of corrections... he says for that reason he knows all too well what obstacles the men and women who work here face... as the current president of asfcme... the union that represents the workers...he says there are glaring problems with the system. 10:16 the department of corrections mission is to protect the public and staff, and they failed. he says a guard vehicle used to circle the perimeter of this facility.... but due to there was not guard vehicle out here saturday when the men escaped. 13:55:21 i don't know if stopped the escape, found out about it sooner. he also says the public might be shocked at how few guards are inside some of these facilities. 8:50:27 one to 150, one to 100... it is just not a safe ratio... and thats what staff work with. both of the inmates were serving time for drug offenses... but homan says that doesn't lessen the severity of this escape... should still be on alert 9:45:27 they are on the run, what will they do to make sure they don't get caught? how hard will they fight when they get caught? and believes more problems are in store... unless something is done at a statelevel... to increase funding for the department of corrections -- and make sure that money is spent on additional staff. 6:50:03 somebody may get hurt. mabye not. i hope thats the way this turns out but everyone should be concerned. nikki/bam: now i did ask the about hese claims... but they did not return my request for comment. in the studio nikki davidson local five news we are iowa. stephanie: once again if you know anything about the whereabouts of michael amodeo or jessy foley ... you are asked to call 911 jack: it's a story you first saw here on local 5, and there's a new development tonight. jack/2shot: grand view university's star wrestler andrew long was dismissed today. school leaders say he violated a code of conduct contract. stephanie: it's strange timing, because last night here at local five we aired a lengthy piece about long's unlikely addition to the vikings' roster. he had previously wrestled for iowa state and penn state, but was kicked off because of legal problems off the mat. while at penn state, he was accused of guilty to indecent assault and served nine months in prison. but the grand agreed to give him another chance. but with some strict rules about his behavior. today we've learned he violated those. local five's elias johnson picks up our coverage in the digital media center. elias johnson what a difference a weekend can make - before andrew long ever laced up his wrestling shoes and put on his viking singlet on - school administrators gave andrew long a third chance with restrictions. he wasn't campus because is is a registered sex offender - and he was abide by a code of conduct that held him to a high standard head coach nick mitchell outlined that contract recently andrews admission college there's been a process some expectations you have that are pretty straight forward. what were some of the things you had to do to make sure everybody was happy, what was signed, what does he understand the expectations are?
