story next week on local five news. jack a big public hearing for the bakken pipeline is now just a week away. the proposed pipeline would cut through the state and has been stirring up a lot of controversy. right now the hearing is scheduled for next week in boone, and the iowa utilities board is adding 210 speakers to the meeting. but some people aren't happy with how those speaking opportunities are being divided. local 5's amanda krenz is here now with the latest. amanda/bam the iowa utilities board looked at several options for an organized way to hear public comment at the hearing... because there are a lot of people with opinions on the pipeline. they ended up going with a 50/50 split. half the people who speak next will will be in support of the pipeline, the other half will be opponents. "the opposition to the bakken pipeline through iowa has been loud. the group iowa citizens for community improvement has held protests outside of the iowa utility board offices. the iub will ultimately decide if the dakota access pipeline, or bakken pipeline as it's known will get the go ahead to run through iowa. nathan 5:43 at the end of the day iub needs to hear stories of iowans, impacte by this whether ists through their drinking water or farmland. the utilities board has a hearing scheduled for next week where both opponents of the pipeline and supporters will be able to speak. the board will allow 210 speakers, 105 from each side, they each get two minutes. nathan 3:44 it paints the illusion that the number of folks who are opposed is equal to the number of supporters which isn't the case. cecil 17:18 splitting it 50/50 seemed to be the fairest way to provide both sides to speak at the public hearing. the iub is well aware of the outspoken opposition to the pipeline, but says so far their attorney says are more supporters have called in to speak at next week's hearing. cecil 18:16 as of 2 pm today we had more call ins to speak in favor of the pipeline than opposed." amanda/bam it's looking like it's looking like the number of people who want to speak on either side of the issue is going to exceed the limit. but the utility board is taking down everyone's name in case somebody doesn't show up to speak, or people don't take their entire two minutes. in that case they'll keep moving down the list to the next name. live in the studio, amanda krenz, local five news, we are iowa. jack: if you're for or against the bakken pipeline, the iowa utilities board wants to hear from you. as amanda told us -- the board is looking for 210 speakers to take part in next week's meeting. the speakers will be divided in half and 105 people from each side will be allowed to talk. each speaker will only have 2 minutes to make their argument. anyone interested can call the utilities board today or tomorrow for a spot in next week's meeting. that's at the number on your screen. jack: we want to know your thoughts on the upcoming hearing. do you think splitting the speakers 50-50 is fair? you can connect with us on facebook and twitter. send us an email to: "news at we are iowa dot com" or call us in the newsroom: 1- 800-858-5555 we'd love to hear what you other. stephanie: new at 5 tonight sees the fruits the waukee department. stephanie: rod french gave dollars to the department back body cameras. today, officers showed mr. french the cameras including how they'll be used in french says he to keep the community safe.
