traffic. good morning, a slow start to the roads. looking at what you can expect here on our d.o.t. camera. traffic moving smoothly in both directions there. no major issues to report to you here on 540. also 40 and 440 looking good, too. we do have an accident on the shoulder, though, on 40 westbound and near the carytown boulevard, other than that things are looking okay. keep in mind, we have the shoulder closure still ongoing on project fortified between exit 301 so it may slow you down a little bit there this morning here. as of right now, your westbound you are looking at a 17-minute drive. we'll have more weather and traffic updates coming up in a few minutes. 6:02 is your time now. investigators say a lightning strike may have caused a house fire in raleigh. fire started around 10:30 last night during the height of the storm at the home on summerton place. nobody was hurt. the house did receive minor damage. well, election day is finally here in north carolina. while a big focus is on campaign 2016, a major decision for the future of our state is also on the day's ballot. that's something that a lot of people are looking at rate now, which includes the north carolina bond referendum. state leaders on both sides want voters to head to the polls today to approve this bond. the dids 2 billion price tag has drawn a bit of controversy since it was first proposed. it would pay for colleges and name a few things. governor mccrory said it won't retire tax increases because treat rates are low. some people are still skeptical. >> it is critical that the state increte in the inhave structure to keep us strong, parks and wreck nation centers across the state strong. >> there's no specifics, and there's no direct link to this project to this amount of money. there's no cost benefit analysis done. >> it's expected to draw a lot of people to the polls today. we'll have more on that coming up in our next half hour. the governor's race is also expected to gain attention in today's primary. according to current polls, it's likely pat mccrory will face challenger attorney both must get the part's nomination first. experts say cooper and mccrory are focused on each other. >> in terms of their primary challenges, it seems like both are looking head to the general. primary opponents. >> we should see a very expensive, loud campaign about clear differences between the two candidates. >> cooper apparently has raised more money than mccrory. >> voters will also focus on the hotly contested race for presidential nominations today. five states are voting in what's being dubbed super tuesday take 3. a lot of sell gates are on the line. tar heeled states are an important port of the primaries. we turn now to justin quesinberry in durham for why. justin, tell us more. all good gathering the delegates. donald trump and hillary clinton are the front-runners and they are all trying to make their mark in north carolina as well. one poll says hillary clinton leads by 55%. as we awe last week, senator sanders built enthusiasm among younger voters. meanwhile, today cruz is part of the polling. he says he could close the gap saying he has been the one candidate to beat trump the most. >> here in north carolina, it is neck and neck. donald and i are within the margin of error of each other. shows up and votes on tuesday. it's why we're reaching out inviting people who are supporting other candidates. >> you have a large number of delegates, this is a state that is respected all over the country. ed outcome here will be very important. >> reporter: that is a look at sanders and cruz. ahead in the next half hour, we take a look at trump and clinton and hear about the importance of north carolina and examine their efforts here in our state. for now, we're live in durham, justin quesinberry, cbs, north carolina. we're not alone, though. people in five states are casting their votes today. cbs's reed binion reports on the importance are seeing traffic volumes no reported problems really on i-40 or the durham freeway. our traffic map is showing just a few. this one is on delta lake drive. in cary, we have an accident in apex at u.s. 64 and apex drive. 64 traffic is being tied up in that vicinity. project fortify, we have that shoulder closure between exit 293 and exit 301. it could be a tight squeeze on there. all clear right now and all green on 540 from 64 to glenwood avenue. you are looking at a 16-minute drive. we'll have more weather and traffic updates coming up in a few minutes. new information this morning about a crash involving a pedestrian in raleigh. police say the victim is still in the hospital undergoing treatment. the trash happened around 8:00 old wake forest road and i-540. several lanes were backed up for more than an hour. no word on the victim's condition or if the officer filed any charges against the driver. campaign 2016 kicks off in the tar heel state today. we take a look now and how north carolina matters in the race for the white house. five states are voting in what's being dubbed super tuesday 3. a lot of delegates are on the line. the general elections as well. u.s. north carolina's justin quesinberry is live in durham at the south regional library. justin, polls opening now? what's it looking like? >> we actually had about a dozen people standing in line to get in. you can see behind me, they started to filter in where they are going to vote. there's been a push by candidates to really ramp up their efforts and tray to get these voters to vote for them. a poll by policy polling released last month. clinton leading 52% to 35% over sanders. clinton is especially appealing found. on the republican side, that same poll gave donald trump 29% of the likely vote over 19% for ted cruz. 16 for mar key rubio. since then, trump has kept his momentum despite clashes at some of his rallies, including that one in fayetteville. >> we've been doing really well. it's been going amazingly well. hopefully, we're going to have results that are incredible. north carolina's going to be very important. >> north carolina has a really important role to play. not only in the primary but then in the general election. >> reporter: well, unlike florida, for example, north carolina's delegates are proportional. republicans have 72 up for it's 107 delegates for democrats. that's what those candidates are trying to get. stefan? >> thanks so much. also, people will head to the polls so decide who will be on the ballot for governor come november. emma wright joins us live from the green road pork community center with more on this race. we've already seen folks show up. here at the green road community center. one of the issues being the governor's rice. governor mccrory is one of the people up for re-election. he is competing against -- [no audio ] kids get ahead in life with special education they want. >> education and the economy, i think they are related. i think teachers need a raise. i also think there's places where there's ways. >> reporter: we talked with voters about what the issues mean to them. the polls opened a few minutes ago. they are open all day and closed at 7:30. i'm emma wright, cbs north carolina. >> one notable absence from the ballot, the state's congressional races. as we've been reporting, voting districts were redrawn. when that happened, the primary dates were also pushed back to june 7. the map was reconfigured at a federal court ruled they were unlawfully race based a. the polls are opening at 6:30 so yeah, they've big candidates were in our state monday hoping to win over your votes. donald trump spoke in hickory. hillary clinton had a late night in charlotte. her visit followed a rally by bernie sanders in the same campaigned for him in fayetteville. breaking overnight, three police officers. the shooting happened on the city's west side. the three officers are expected to survive. the undercover officer was killed by his own colleagues. he says officer j' kai colson was not wearing any body armor and was dressed in civilian clothing. >> we have individuals videotaping it as if it's a game. >> the of wake county. these numbers are just updating before our very own eyes. siler city, your visibility is less than a half mile now dropping to 5 miles in roxboro. 7 around henderson and south hill. your current temperatures are much cooler than they have been by 5 to 10 degrees. 53 in roxboro. here in raleigh, we're in the mid-50s. lillington, clayton and rocky mount are all around 59 degrees. you'll notice we hang in the mid-50s through 8:00 a.m. the 70s on your lunch hour. maybe you are taking your lunch outdoors. you are hitting the polls on your lunch break. 76 at 2:00. we're going to of games at pnc arena. noon temperature around 70 our high 74. so even thursday, we are still going to be about 10 degrees warmer than where we should be. 67 on friday. we are tracking the threat for near exit 287 at harrison avenue. traffic's crawling from wade avenue. use caution in that area. a couple of minor wrecks here. there is an accident at wye cliff road at lake boon trail which may also
