hike planned. >> what did she say to you. >> she said he's either going to propose to me or kill me. >> 48 hours has been tracking this case for years and we're joined live from new york city and eater, it's been years since this happened. why is the >> well, that's an interesting story five year ares passed. the evidence did not change. a true crime can writer, a beth selling author named steven johnson says i'm writing a book about this case and seems as though justice has not been served here. the prosecutors emails him back and says i'm going to put this before the people, a grand jury is called and as the old express goes you can get a ham sandwich indicted if you want to. he's indicted ask charged with the murder even though there is no physical evidence no, eyewitness, no incriminating email that says he did this, and by the way in that area about four people die every year falling off these trails. >> well, i've certainly hiked that area before. i know you went to that trail, i mean, how could this have happened if he claims it was an accident? >> the trail itself is is they had headed out on this hike it was partly cloudy, but then a system -- weather system moved in and it started to rain. it was march. so it was a bit slushy. he claims that she was skipping down the trail on their way whack and slipped and fell and an autopsy report indicated she had several drugs in her system one of which could affect your balance. so it's a perplexing case. >> i guess you have to think too how did the drugs get into her system as well. now, the boyfriend is in custody at this point. how were you able to get to him and interview him? >> we developed a relationship with his attorney, and steven says he has nothing to hide. his story is very simple as to what happened that day and he feels an inn justice has been done. the defense team is saying the only reason why their client is in jail is because a crime author was going to write this book and the prosecutors in this tiny county didn't want to look bad. >> all right. thanks so much for spending some time with us. i can't wait to see it. you can see he it at 10 on saturday night right here on about 300 cubic yards of snow were hauled in. a section of the race has been cut from 11 to 3 miles. 85 teams will participate. >> who would have thought. we don't have any snow to worry about here either. so there's some good news to kick off your saturday. it is cold outside 37 degrees our current taking a look and we are seeing the skies getting a lit bit brighter this morning. and we'll see at least a little bit of sunshine through our morning hours here before we start seeing clouds thickening up later this afternoon. we've got a few clouds out there right now. no wet weather at least for our daytime hours. later tonight we do have our next little system sitting back to the west and that's going to push into the area bringing us a chance for a few showers during our late night hours tonight and early morning hours tomorrow. it's 37 degrees in raleigh, 32 in durham, it's 36 in fayetteville. cold in some spots though in the upper 20s. it's 29 in roxboro and sanford, 27 in siler city. as we head through this afternoon temperatures will be warming up into the mid-50s, that's still below average for this time of year but a little bit warmer than we were yesterday and we will see the clouds thickening up throughout the day especially this afternoon and into this evening. looking at temperatures around 49 degrees temperature about 55 by 4:00 this afternoon. we still have this area of high pressure sitting off shore here and that's going to lead to a dry day today but as the weakening cold front approaches we will see increasing clouds with the showers arriving later this evening and into tonight. we're mainly talking between i'll say 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. tomorrow our best chance for seeing a little bit of wet weather moving in. so the front clears the area quickly, a new system of high pressure builds behind it. so skies becoming sunny tomorrow temperatures still cool with highs in the 50s but that changes starting on monday, the high slides off shore we get this warm flow out of the south so our temperatures start to warm up and this high pressure center it's going to stay in control of our weather through the end of this upcoming week. so we're looking at warming temperatures by tuesday. all these high temperatures will be in the 70s and i won't be talking about some spots flirting with the 80-degree mark. so today as we walk you through clouds increasing across the rental gone and overnight a chance for seeing a few of the spotty showers rolling through. by early morning tomorrow we are looking at clearing skies and then that's going to be the case through the next several days as well. so really today our only chance for wet weather until the end of this upcoming week. a you high today in raleigh of 55, 54 in durham, 57 in fayetteville. tonight temperatures fall to 38 degrees mostly cloudy skies, showers likely not cold enough to snow for us us tonight so we will see just a few spotty rain showers moving in. your 7-day forecast has temperatures in the 50s for tomorrow. 62 by monday. 72 on tuesday, 74 on wednesday , we're still dry with a high temperature of 76 on thursday in the sand hills could be pushing that 80-degree mark on thursday chance for a few showers on friday we're still looking warm with temperatures in the low 70s around 72. so it's march, and you know, we've seen kind of whacky weather so far with cold temperatures and jumping back to temperatures that have been unseasonably warm and that's exactly the case this week. >> next weekend is the week attend we spring forward. >> it going to be lighter later we've got warm temperatures and kind of the perfect setup. >> thank you so much. still ahead we're catching up with one of our former on the else north carolina has a lot to play for anticipating a big warm up. >> yeah, so hang in there for a couple days we've had this stretch of cooler than normal temperatures. we've got temperatures in the 70s for this week ahead. let's take a look outside right now looking towards the east. sunrise about 6:39 a.m. we're not going to see very much in the way of sunshine today but at least a few peeks through some clouds that will be increasing as we head through this afternoon. the reason for the increase in the cloud cover is going to be this next area of low pressure and weakening cold front sitting back to the west and that's
