people. it's good. >> so once you get passed the driveway and passed the ice in the morning, everything was good. >> yeah no worries at all. >> reporter: of course just because it's raining doesn't mean you can drive the full speed limit. because let's face it, when it rains you can hydroplane. even in tonight's conditions, you ought to take it easy. on interstate 85 right now in orange county, we're heading down towards the durham area. we'll check back later in the broadcast and show you how things are going there. i'm steve wncn news now. from the triangle down to cumberland county icy >> it gives a great deal of stress in this legislative building. there's a great deal of stress across the state. there are people that have cast their vote for congress. that they now don't know if it's going to count. >> 1500 people statewide returned absentee ballots. the districts at issue are one and twelve. twelve is toward winston salem. and one includes spots east of wilson and also to durham. the general assembly is asking a delay in the order as they say changing the districts now would impact the congressionallal primary elections on march 5th. without a delay, lawmakers would hold a special session. >> although it might cost a few dollars to resend absentee ballots, the value of the constitution and adhering to other concerns. >> there's also the question of how the supreme court vacancy left by the death of justice skalia would impact the redistricting case. a single justice could grant a delay. but an appeal on the case would go before the entire court. skalia west of the trianglement our mobile news tracker driving the roads of orange and durham county. and steve joins us again now with an update. it looks like you're seeing a lot of rain over there. >> reporter: yes, we have. and i have to tell you, no sooner were the words out of my mouth in the last broadcast about driving carefully when we were coming down making that switch from 85 to 147, we saw not one, but two, that's right, two automobiles facing the wrong-way after we had crossed bridges. apparently because we keep telling you over and over again during the winter months, bridge decks freeze before the roadways do with that coal air circulating underneath and both those times automobiles were facing the wrong-way off the side of the road because they passed those bridges too fast and spun out. so the watch word tonight is as bridge decks, be careful and keep your speeds slow. otherwise, if we were going full speed when we crossed the bridge decks, we would have ended up like those folks. wncn news now. >> good advice there. drive safe. here's another check of the roadways. what you're seeing here is a live look over i 440 at glenwood avenue. the precipitation is on the camera lense. that's why it looks foggy right now. here's a look at i-85 and i-40. you can see there, traffic moving just fine, waiting for the light to turn. >> i'm in the weather center with chief meteorologist wes hohenstein. it's hard to believe we saw snow and sleet today. tomorrow in the 50s though. >> the highs around 60. severe storms. >> that's the trade off. >> good and bad tomorrow. i don't know if any other commute will be better this morning or tomorrow morning. but i tell you what, it's ugly out there now. not only is it 32 degrees. our fourth day in a row with in fact, 32 is our current high for the day. but it looks foggy and drizzly, and in some cases, that drizzle is light freezing drizzle. a lot of problems tonight. this is 440 east and westbound here in north raleigh. and here is the radar. so generally dry here in wake county. but remember radar most times doesn't pick up on drizzle and mist. there's some of that out there. then there's light freezing rain from north of pittsburgh through chapel hill and carrboro and 40 and 85 into pierson county. still tough stuff out there with the road conditions. otherwise, it's light rain, regular rain, not frozen. along the i-95 corridor. because that's where the warmer temperatures are. early this morning. that's when most of the snow and sleet fell. and as usual, our friends up in roxboro got most of it. 2.5 inches there. efland almost two inches. and much lower totals in the triangle. a winter weather storm passed through. but more of that condensed sleet and freezing rain. that's three in a row now we've had like this. and as we look at temperatures across the state, it's a heat wave along the coast as they're in the 40s and 50s. and that warm air is going to push in here over night. sending our temperatures up. so from about freezing right now, we'll jump up to 33 at 8:00. 35 at 10:00. still some freezing rain in the next couple hours. then the warm air and the warm front push through turning everything to rain. and so by tomorrow morning, most schools go in at a normal time because it's going to be 50 degrees. and all the roads should be fine. most of the roads i should say. but our problem will be heavy rain and the chance of severe storms. so there's two fronts. one warm front will come through tonight warming our temperatures. and then this cold front approaching tomorrow morning and the rain ahead of it bringing us another headache for the morning commute. let's talk about that chance of storms. we pick it up at midnight tonight when that warm air pushes all the frozen in virginia leaving it in the mountains. as we put the maps into motion. here comes the line of storms. there's the cold front. this is the shot at 5:00 a.m. a lot of us seeing dry weather. but the main line of storms immediately to our west. and it looks like it'll be moving through. through the busiest time of the morning commute. here's what the radar could look like at 7:00 a.m. heavy rain, gusting winds, even a chance of an isolated tornado. the good newses is it's not an all day thing. it comes at a bad time in the morning commute but at 10:00 a.m., most of the rain is out of here. as we get into the afternoon, we have sunshine and temperatures around 60 degrees. four days in a row in the 30s. we jump to 60 tomorrow. that's the wonders of north carolina weather. so here's our risk tomorrow. it's the lowest risk. a marginal risk of severe weather. mainly along the i-95 corridor. it's in the morning time. damaging wind and maybe an isolated tornado. something we're going to keep a close eye on. tomorrow morning to help get you out the door. not with snow. but with severe storms. amazing what 24 hours can do. it'll be a warmer day. it'll be a stormy morning. but look forward to some sunshine in the afternoon. in your seven-day forecast, we'll take us from 60 tomorrow to 56 wednesday. 52 on thursday. so getting a little bit cooler. but with generally dry conditions. we have a small chance of rain on wednesday. but we've got dry weather thursday and friday. and look at that weekend. let's just look at that. sunday. most of it dry. most of it sunny. with a small chance of rain sunday into monday. but after four days in the 30s, after 15 degrees on sunday morning, our coldest temperature on the seven-day is 32. friday morning. don't put the winter coats away yet. but let's think about the spring wardrobe. but by this weekend. thank you wes. a durham music teacher set to grammys. well alongside the likes of taylor swift and kendrick a phillip briggs is the music educator of the year. he receives a 10,000-dollar honorarium and a 10,000-dollar grant for the school. >> the grammys airs tonight on cbs. now is a good time to remind you cbs is coming to wncn. we'll add programs such as the big bang theory, survivor, and march madness. and wncn will add more local news as well. sharon, wes, and i will begin at 5:00 p.m. monday through friday. you can find much more on the transition right now on wncn.com. we're very excited about it as well. just six months after approving food trucks, leaders are proposing banning them in certain areas. >> they're discussing the proposal now. the concerns that brought the here we want to take a live look at 15501. it's completely shut down that area. this is coming in right now. the d.o.t. camera is moving around. right now it's moving to what you see there. 15501. i-85 closed down because of an eight-car accident. >> we'll have updates on that on wncn. just because we've gone all day with this doesn't mean that it's over yet. as we can see there's still issues on the road. many of us still below freezing. and as you can see on the radar, there's still light freezing rain falling. and while a lot of the roads are okay. not all of them are. remember this is one of those strange nights where temperatures go up. much warmer tomorrow. it's a tangle of multiple symptoms. brintellix
