up after the break, it's hip-hop history month. we're going to tell you about some of the cultural events in our area in this week's positively black. plus this. >> coming up next on talk stoop, that sound. like nails on a chalkboard. but listen to this: (family talking) that's a different kind of sound. the sound of the weekend. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop. it's always worth remembering... that icing the cinnamon rolls is a privilege not a right. unleash the power of dough. welcome back on ab sunday morning with the culture of hip-hop being celebrated this month. >> our tracie strahan has more in this morning's positively black. >> news 4 new york presents positively black. >> we are wrapping up 31 days of nonstop hip-hop in queens. the musical heritage of the bureau is being taught by legends like deejay marley maul, but the lessons are coming in a library setting. a creator of the show, ralph mcdaniels is a hip-hop coordinator. kim mcneil capers, the outreach coordinator of the library. i have to call you uncle ralph when you come. no stranger to the show, no stranger to be new york. but this is a title for you. tell me about what you do in this capacity. >> i'm the ambassador now for hip-hop for the queens public library, which is amazing. they've never had anything like that before. the last couple years. kim is the spearhead for the things happening. now what we're going to do is create an archive that you can go to the queens public library, physically go there, or go online and find things, like the first vinyl records and the guys who were the deejays back in the day. you never say the first because that's always -- >> that's controversial. we don't want to get into that now, please. >> but it creates some type of timeline of hip-hop in queens. you have some successful guys. run dmc, 50 cent, nas. >> i would say successful. kim, let's talk about some of the programs. not only is it history. you're teaching the kids. this is a library setting. you're making a little noise with the kids. >> that's right. queens library has a real commitment. we're dedicated to hip-hop. we are really, really vested in providing an opportunity for young people to find out what's going on with hip-hop. finding out about the legacy and the culture of hip-hop. we want to preserve that. queens library is here to do that. we brought ralph mcdaniels on board. >> that's big. >> it is. and he's been working with us for really a long time. it's been a natural fit for the library to work with ralph. >> this isn't the first year for this. you kind of have done some of this before. what growth have you seen? i'm wondering from you, ralph, what's the response from these young kids seeing all of this now? that's pretty big. >> well, it's great. one of the things i thought about when i first got involved with this was bridging the gap. young people are not into, like, the '80s music. some of them. >> or '90s at this point. >> but, you know, they have their own style and their own way of expressing themselves. same way we did when we were 18 years old, back in the day. >> when was that? >> yeah, right. so what we're doing is bridging the gap, bringing young people in on their level to let them understand that what they're doing, we've done already, you know, and it's okay but be yourself, do your thing, and have fun. >> kim, i have to imagine this has been a big boost for the library too. >> this is huge. this week started six days of library service. so the library is now open monday through saturday, 65 locations. so we are excited about creating and doing and preserving hip-hop. we've got music, programs, deejay programming and technology programings s. so we are excited for young people, excited for the older generation, the newer generation. we are excited. >> we want to thank both of you for being here and let everybody know for more information on this hip-hop program, go to queenslibrary.org. is that right? >> that's correct. >> he had to end it on a scratch. thank you both for being here. >> good to see you. thank you. >> this has been a public affairs presentation from nbc 4 he is playing himself in a new usa comedy. >> cat greenleaf sits down with donnie deutsch in today's "talk stoop." >> when last we met, he sort of implied he really liked my job and maybe wanted it. now you're on television playing yourself playing a talk show host, and now you just told me you have a bulldog also. so donnie deutsch, you're trying to take my life. >> it's like a single white female thing except i'm a male and single. >> what else do you want to know? i'll just give you the tips. you're just taking my life. >> okay. where can i get them fancy trousers? >> funny you should ask. the dollar store. >> no way. >> yes, in park slope. it's really good to see you. i'm so, so excited about your new show. this is a big deal. i play kind of a fictionalized version of myself. >> i'm kinkier, i'm more confident. >> let's stop on the kipgy part. >> donnie, this is not a date. >> i play donnie deutsch. everyone else is cast and scripted. i have a daytime talk show where i espouse wonderful advice to people. america loves me, but off the show, i'm a complete hypocrite. >> this is my personal cell. >> how freaking weird is it to be playing yourself in the third person? >> it's actually fun. it's cathartic because -- i'm playing a more idiotic version of myself, which is hard to do. >> stop it, stop it. >> but the key is i'm making fun of myself, making fun of my life and making fun of media people. the whole premise of the show is we in the media, or people in the media, sit on pedestals or stoops, and they critique others. in reality, we're all doing the same stupid things. >> great, now she's texting. mr. deutsch, it's urgent i speak with you. >> maybe she really needs my help. i should call her. >> no! >> actors, after they've been actors and want to be taken seriously like smart people, they put their smart actor glasses on. the journey was interesting. you know, i really -- what the [ bleep ] is the journey? i listen to these actors up there when they're getting awards. where the [ bleep ] are you going? you're not ponce de leon. there's no journey. >> i'm going home. >> show's over. bye. >> i thought you were done. >> and you can see a full half hour better, healthier ingredients so you don't have to feel guilty. >> and it's going to taste good? you promise? >> i promise. >> okay. well, we're going to talk about sangria, pizza, chili, and mac and cheese. a lot of questions about this. sangria in a crock pot. never seen that before. it's like a mulled wine, i guess. >> exactly. i love this because it's the first organic sangria. it's made with organic grapes and it also has addrd super fruits. you could have it just on your own, but we're talking comfort foods, so i mulled it. i did it with extra spices such as oranges, cloves, ginger, and cinnamon. you can just throw this in a coffee filter. twist it up. throw that in. >> sure. just boom, right there. >> right in the crock pot. >> what's a little healthier about that? >> cinnamon is great for balancing blood sugar. ginger is so medicinal. it has anti-inflammatory properties. and it gives it that warm winter feel. >> pizza, we all love pizza. we know that's kind of a cheat meal. you say no. >> this is different. this is a great weeknight meal. takes about 20 minutes or so to make. what we use for the crust is a gluten free brown rice tortilla. just heat that up in the oven for about ten minutes on 400. then you can add any toppings you want and throw it back in. i put kale, the healthiest food. >> i'm not putting kale on a pizza. >> it's good. rosemary, thyme, roasted kale. there's no cheese. you could put what you want. i chose to keep this super green. >> this is the time of year everyone loves to make chili, especially football sundays. >> this is my super food chili. it's vegetarian. in place of meat, we use mu tshrooms. it gives it a very meaty texture. i also added some spices in here like turmeric. turmeric is a wonder spice. >> what does that taste like? >> you know, you can't really taste it that much. it's that bright yellow spice. it will turn everything yellow. but it doesn't have a very strong flavor. it's usually masked by other flavors. >> how long does that take to cook? >> it takes about 40 minutes, start to finish. not terrible. >> mac and cheese. that's what fortified me through a lot of college experiences. the ten pack, 10 for $10. the cheaper, the better. this is different. >> this is going to blow your mind. there's no cheese in this. >> mind blown. come on. >> instead of cheese, we're using sweet potato sauce. >> okay. >> this is insane. we're going to start with a little coconut oil. the pan is hot. you'll see that'll melt right away. we're going to make a healthy roux, which is when you add the flour to the oil. this is going to thicken up the sauce. this is tapioca flour. i made it gluten free as well. you basically just add the flour in a little at a time until it gets thick. then we're going to add the rest of the ingredients. >> what else? so we're going to put lime juice. just let this get in. some lime juice. weiv're going to put -- this is dijon mustard. >> beautiful. >> sounds a little strange. garlic. >> can't go wrong with that. all healthy so far. >> and this is sweet potato and almond milk. >> are you combining them? >> i roasted sweet potatoes and put them in the blender with almond milk. >> okay. so that's your version of the dairy product. >> exactly. this is going to get thick. takes about 10, 15 minutes. it'll get creamy. you use that as the sauce for your pasta. >> can i eat this? >> yes, you can. >> that's really good. >> it is good. >> i would lose a bet if you told me it totally tastes like mac and cheese. what kind of pasta? >> that's another thing. i used brown rice pasta. you can't even taste the difference. for some added fiber and nutrients, i threw in some broccoli and sweet potato. you can't even notice the veggies. >> i can't promise to eat healthy the entire season, but at least you're giving me some breaks along the way. hey, people interested in these recipes and more about you, where do they go? >> check out marie ja marlowe.com. also on after your thanksgiving feast. bill's books is next. an untold story of a quest for olympic glory. >> this week's bill's books. bill goldstein joins us now. so excited about this one in particular. the author of "ticker tailor soldier spy." bill has been going on for three minutes now. this book, does it -- >> it's a biography. what i think is wonderful is that adam is a literary biographer. people think of him as a thriller writer. these are uncommonly beautifully written and intelligent and i've reread them so many times. so i just -- i love this biography. it is unflinching. it looks into his activities not only as a writer but where they come from in the spying that he did also in his life. there's wonderful depth to this book about his marriage. he apparently had many dal yanss that are described. and that infidelity really became a drug for his writing. so it's just an extraordinary book. i think when you read this, you'll immediately want to re-read the novels you have read or hopefully go on to them. >> olympic glory is a theme in another one of these books. >> yes, this is "the three year swim club." there's a japanese-american swim him a glorious amateur. he doesn't know anything about swimming, but he gets the idea he wants to train these sugar plantation children, who are very poor, in swimming to give them something to look forward to. so it's the beginning of 1937. they're going to train for the 1940 olympics. of course, the 1940 olympics don't actually happen because of the war. so it's the coach, some boys and some girls too who train for those three years and live this olympic dream after the war. you get the history of the japanese in america during the war, including the internment, and after that what happens and their loyalty not only to the coach but also to his ideals. he does this wonderful thing. he says, in terms of the swimming, he won't sit down while the students are in the water because he wants to be part of what they're doing. he doesn't want them to see him relaxing. these people's entire lives are changed. and we get to the olympics after the war. >> that's a good thing. "becoming nicole." >> this is a very timely book by amy nutt. it's about the transformation -- the subtitle is the trabansformation of an american family. it's about identical twins, one of whom is transgender. they're two boys. from the very beginning, one of the boys, wyatt, knows he really is a girl. one of the most extraordinary things about this book is how much children know. she spent obviously a lot of time with this family. now nicole is -- has graduated high school. she really transformed not only her own family but had a lot of impact in maine where they live on legal issues. she testified against anti-transgender legislation. she was party to a lawsuit. she meets the president. and it's about not only what children know about their own sexuality but then also how her father and mother become used to this. it's not what they really expected. and there's this gorgeous moment near the end in which the father, who is very conservative and has come to accept this, writes for the first time in seven years. he writes a christmas letter to his family. so you get the larger culture story, but the small transformations that are so poignant within the story. and the father's message really is that parents should have confidence in themselves so that they can treat their children as their children need to be treated without thinking about what other people think. it's a really wonderful story. >> and really quickly here, your last one, "the japanese lover." >> a magnificent writer, chilean writer who now lives in the united states. a beautiful book about displaced persons. it's about an elderly woman in a nursing home and what happened to her through the course of her life when she as a white american woman fell in love with a japanese gardener at her family. she had a past. she now meets a woman in the nursing home who has also come from europe, a younger woman. it's about their relationship. she tells beautiful stories. there are so many secrets revealed as the book comes to its conclusion. you're always on the verge of tears. she really breaks your heart. in a good way. >> all right. something for everyone there. >> i'll read "the japanese lover" right off the top. >> you want to cry. >> i need an uplifting cry and a deep one. >> if you have a question for bill, just e-mail him at billsbooks@nbcuni.com. you can also find a list of the
