the universal values that we share. the u.s. this morning vowing its support as the investigation into the attack continues. we have the latest on precautions here at home. this is "today in new are in the 40s and still falling in some spots. 44 degrees outside. it's breezy. it stays breezy all day long. temperatures below average for a change. struggling to get into the low 50s today. now to the terror attacks in paris. here's what we know right now. at least 127 people were killed in those attacks. more than 100 others hurt. no americans have been reported among the fatalities. eight of the attacks are confirmed dead. the french president says that attack was planned abroad. >> metro lines are shut down in paris. and people who live there are encouraged to stay indoors. we have live coverage with three crews crews. >> just moments ago france's president addressed the nation saying the attacks were an act of war. and adding that he will be merciless against the barbarians. chaos across the city after terrorists zero in on multiple civilian targets. explosions first heard about 10:00 p.m. paris time north of the city. as a soccer game was going on at the french national stadium you could hear a thunderous boom. a police union official said there were two suicide attacks nearby outside the stadium. as crews rushed to respond, more rat tack the bloodiest site of the attacks where more than 100 people were killed. killers executed people and grenades went off. the singer and guitarist are okay. but their camp tweeted, quote, we're still trying to determine the safety of all our band and crew. the same band had played twice in new york city. in september they played at the bowery ballroom. the fact that the band itself has been swept up in these auchl wful events bring it to close to home. the terror continues at a shopping mall in paris. so many residents and tourists wondering what could be next. disneyland paris closed. we mentioned that within the last hour president hollande spoke about the possible source of the attacks. >> the french president pointing the finger directly at the islamic state, isis terror group, saying the plot was orchestrated from abroad and there were at least eight suspects, right shoot eight shooters involved in this attack. seven of them believed to be armed not only with guns but suicide belts, explosive devices that were used outside that soccer stadium. again more than 127 dead, more than 100 injured. they are blaming the islamic state for this attack. now the investigation continues, the manhunt continues to see who else inside france might have assisted these suspects and whether these suspects trained overseas either in syria during the fight in syria alongside the islamic state fighters and got training there and returned to france or just been a sleeper cell inside france the spire time. the question is also where did they get the weapons, the explosives, and how was a group of eight able to avoid detection and pull off the worst attack in france since world war ii. this is the worst attack in paris since 2004. 190 plus people killed in those train attacks. in this one, 127 dead, more than 100 injured. among the 100 injured, many of them are critical. it's yet to be seen whether all of those victims will be able to recover. back to you in the studio. >> john, you've been reporting how the fbi has been monitoring the situation here at home. at this point is there any level of collaboration between the two countries, or is this strictly a french investigation? >> the nypd ever since 9/11 had officers overseas. there's an officer in paris. all of this information being shared realtime. the cia, all the intelligence arms of the u.s. government actively working with french authorities to monitor this. fbi, the nypd say there's no specific threat to the u.s. it appears to be an attack kenter kent er send er centers inside france. as a precaution we saw last night the nypd ramped up its already ramped up security posture outside diplomatic positions, times square. you're going to see that for the next few days until authorities get a better grip on what took place, who was responsible and how ey were able to krar carry this out. president obama spoke briefly from the white house to offer his con dell lens dolences to the french people and to offer the support of the united states. >> we stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance that the government and the people of france need to reilspond. >> the vatican also responded, saying, we are shocked by this manifestation of maddening terrorist violence and hatred. this is an attack on peace for all humanity. back here at home, a vigil planned at the frenchrombassy on the upper east side. >> reporter: this morning there is a uniformed nypd police officer keeping an eye outside of the french embassy. yet, this is where mourners are expected to gather later this evening around 7:00 to pray for the victims of those heinous attacks. outside of the embassy. mourners paid their respects by lighting candles and dropping off fl ers. that continued to grow overnight. they stepped up their patrols on fifth avenue not far from the emba y. >> nypd immediately stepped up its activity and homeland security. it's really a full court press at so many levels. >> reporter: the nypd released a statement saying they have ancreased their security out of an abundance of caution and to provide police presence. there will be another gathering around 2:00 this afternoon in union square. back to you. >> thank you. and this emotional scene in union square here in the city last night, exchange students from france holding hands and singing their national anthem, part of a cant e light vigil held in memg y of the victims. social media has been a key tool for loved ones to check on their loved ones in paris. >> as soon as they click the i'm safe button their friends on facebook get a notification like this one giving them the good news they're okay. . and the state department has also set up a hotline for americans concerned about their beloved ones in paris. weather channel managing editor sam champion is in paris. he was at the base of the identical tower when the attacks happened. >> we had a lot of dignitaries as we walked away, the entire area wen on lock down. it was a mad scramble to get off the streets at that moment. social media is unbelievable. you didn't have to be near a tv set to know something was very very wrong. >> we'll keep you updated throughout setting us up for a milder and less blustery sunday. back to those deadly terror attacks in paris. here's what's happening now. 1500 french troops are on the ground in paris patrolling key areas of the city. >> the french president is blaming isis for the attacks. massive lines are being reported enforces very tough border controls. >> we have crews covering the latest from france and the impact of those attacks here at home. a short time ago france's president addressed the nation saying the attacks were, quote, an act of war. the attacks on a soccer stadium, concert hall and cafe were committed by a terrorist army against france, against the values that we defend everywhere in the world against what we are, a free country that means something to the whole planet. there were at least eight attackers, seven of them suicide bombers. at a theater more than 100 people were killed while an american band was on stage. suicide bombers also struck outside a stadium where a match between france and germany was being played. one fan inside described the confusion. >> you can hear the reaction after. they cheered. we thought it was fireworks or some kind of cannon or something deliberate done during the game. i mean, it wasn't until almost 60 or 70 minutes when i started getting calls and texts and people asking if i was okay. >> just minutes ago isis claimed responsibility for the attacks. and in an unprecedented move disneyland paris closed today as a precautionary measure. as we've been talking about this morning, the french president is blaming the islamic state group isis for the attacks. >> reporter: overnight the terror group isis out of syria claiming responsibility for the attack online. officials still working to verify those claims. but as the french president announced this morning all suspicion pointed at the islamic state group and the french president vowing retaliation. there are 1500 soldiers joining police in locking down and securing paris as they look into not only who exactly the eight terrorists were. seven of them wore suicide vests and set off explosives. they are now looking to see who else inside france might have been assisting this terror cell and also how they got their training, how they got their weapons and what the overseas connections might be. again, isis being blamed for this terror attack which has left 127 dead, about more than 100 injured. 100 of those critically wounded. the coming days. u.s. officials say there are no threats here inside the u.s. france has already been helping in carrying out air strikes against syria. it's unclear what the next steps are going to be from french and coalition authorities in retaliating against the group should the evidence further point to isis and isis leaders for carrying out this attack. again, the french president blaming isis and isis itself putting out a statement this morning claiming responsibility. >> this is exactly what european officials had feared and tried to prevent. you've been in touch with authorities in this country. how on earth do you prepare and guard against something like that? >> the key is intelligence. cia, the nypd works very hard at day in, day out. the problem in france, what it appears to be is that you have so many fighters from inside france who went to syria. they fought alongside isis, hundreds of them. and many of them have since returned to france. and the intelligence authorities there have been stretched, taxed trying to follow all the potential extremist who may want to do harm inside that country. it's unclear whether the attackers were actual fighters inside syria. again, they have not yet identified who these eight attackers are. but clearly they're drawing a direct link to isis. have to get in front of this and find out who else might be to blame. here in the u.s. not as much of a problem, the population is not -- the extremist population is not nearly as great. but the fbi has told us there are investigations going on inside the u.s. in all 50 states regarding potential isis followers, lone wolves here inside the u.s. but again no specific threat in the u.s. the hunt continues for other possible suspects in france. the tragedy in paris comes as that city continues to heal from attacks earlier this year when gunmen terrorized the city for three days be ack in january beginning with the magazine charlie hebdo. two days after that, a gunman opened fire inside a kosher deli, kiledling four more people. here at home in the darkness last night, a tribute in light. the spire of one world trade glowed blue white and red, the colors of the french flag. new york showing solidarity with the people of france. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. this morning the french flag outside of the embassy has been lowered and there is a uniformed nypd police officer patrolling the entrance to the embassy. mourners started paying their respects to the victims of the paris attacks by lighting candles and dropping off bouquets of flowers. that memorial has steadily grown as new yorkers reflect on their own grief. want to pay homage to the french people, all the lives lost senselessly. innocent people are murdered. >> reporter: the nypd and other intelligence officials don't know of any known threats to new york right now, but they have thstepped up their patrols around e embassy and other parts of the city. in addition to the prayer vigil that's expected here around 7:00 here at the french embassy, there will also be the gathering in union square around 2:00 p.m. shocking. >> reporter: are your family and friend okay? >> i have not had any family my family yet on the phone, but i know they should be allnright. >> reporter: a staten island woman is in paris improperly installed gas line is likely the cause of wednesday's deadly home explosion. we are told that a utility worker went to the house for a service activation on tuesday but founddthat the gas was already on. residents reported smelling gas later in the day but no one called wednesday moralng the roof of that home blew off killing a man and injuring others. the ground floor of that home is an illegally converted ap.artment. a 16-year-old boy made two anonymous threats on twitter. on e red going to shoot up the campus was locked down as a precaution. a serial transit thief is being held without bail this morning. he pleaded not guilty to charged that he stole a greyhound bus from the port authority terminal. a video shows his arrest in park slope last week. he has been arrested more than tw.o dozen times for posing as a transit worker and stealing buses and trains. he has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. details on a report that shows a spike in the number of
