now, wmur news 9 tonight. tom: a new hampshire woman took the story of her step-daughter' s life and death to capitol hill. tonight, her mission to help curb the heroin crisis moved from the granite state to a good evening, i' shelley: i' m shelley walcott. kriss blevens was invited to the bi-partisan event targeting the opioid epidemic. jean mackin joins us live with what happened there just a few hours ago. jean: lawmakers held what' s known as a special order sharing real solutions and real stories including amber' s story. , lawmakers joined together on capitol hill to consider a bi-partisan battle against opioid addiction. congresswoman annie kuster hosted the session called putting a face on heroin standing next to a photograph of amber' s face. >> the drug had consumed her found dead in an alley from a heroin overdose. she was 22-years-old. jean in 2014, amber lost her : life to a heroin overdose in manchester. her step-mother, make-up artist kriss blevens, shares amber' s story with presidential candidates who sit in her chair determined to catapult the crisis to a national stage while making changes at home, like helping launch the hope for new hampshire recovery center. >> when you lose a child to overdose your whole world crumbles. you don' t even know how you' re going to get up and do your day. but an angel spoke to me and said stay in the stream of life and that brough tme to advocacy. that' s how i' ve been doing grief, alongside my husband, mark. jean new hampshire' s : representatives founded the ' bi-partisan task force to combat the heroin epidemic' nearly 50 members of congress strong. >> we' re here not just to combat this epidemic but bring nation. jean kriss says she' ll keep : sharing amber' s story until other families don' t have similar stories to tell. >> most of the people we' re placing in detox and treatment have to go out of state right now. they can' t be treated in new hampshire. simply not because we don' t have wonderful treatment, but we don' t have enough beds. jean: thanks to kriss, more beds are opening up inside the hope for new hampshire recovery center. in a special room named after her daughter, amber' s place. live in the newsroom, jean mackin, wmur news9. shelley: the state' s heroin and opioid abuse crisis is expected to be one of the main issues addressed by the state legislature this session. that new session began today in concord. three bills dealing with the opioid epidemic are expected to be approved soon. they would increase penalties for dealing fentanyl, expand the use of narcan, and enhance drug and alcohol education in schools. the governors desk no later than the 21st of this month. >> we are going to do that right off the bat and then we will talk about extending our system that we have here in new hampshire. shelley: lawmakers are also expected to debate the reauthorization of medicaid expansion, which brings tens of millions of federal dollars into the state. tom: a trio of republican presidential candidates hosted town hall meetings in the granite state tonight jeb bush, carly fiorina, and john kasich. bush headed to the lakes region. where wmur political reporter adam sexton caught up with him for a 1-on-1 interview in meredith. >> i' m leaning towards donald trump. i was wondering why you think he' s a jerk. let me see how much time. >> for jeb bush, the donald trump phenomenon is now brushed aside with a joke. not so funny to the former with a hydrogen bomb. >> when people talk about north korea, they immediately start laughing because nation voters tonight -- a cake. it was in celebration of kasich his 50th town hall meeting in new hampshire. wmur' s stephanie woods is live in hooksett with more. stephanie: earlier this afternoon, kasich participated in a panel on human trafficking in concord, then held a town hall meeting at this american here in hooksett, he was tested by voters both big and small. >> sam, sam i am. you want to change how the federal budget works and to trim the size of the government. former virginia governor jim gilmore spent today on the seacoast. he toured strum ruger in newport and met with workers. the republican presidential candidate also held a small business roundtable in portsmouth. tomorrow, gilmore will be in concord to make a visit to the state house, and he has a tour of the portsmouth naval shipyard planned. shelley: when donald trump arrived in new hampshire last night for his rally in claremont, a few granite state supporters had a gift waiting for him. backstage, three businessowners presented the presidential hopeful with a custom made ar-15 style rifle with ' live free or die' engraved on the side. the secret service team assigned to protect donald trump had very specific requirements. >> they came to the gun store yesterday. weapon so it was inoperable. then they took posession of the weapon for the day. then brought it into the room when we presented it to mr. trump last night. shelley: the rifle which looks just like this one is back at the black op arms store where it will be modified to comply with the laws in whichever state trump plans to register the weapon. trump will be back in new england tomorrow night for another campaign event but police in burlington, vermont say they' re not sure everyone who plans to attend will be able to. city a juvenile broke into the building on amherst street and were recorded on video surveillance. rosario was arrested last month, and police arrested antilus yesterday. all 3 are charged with burglary. milford police are searching for a man who hasn' t been heard from since christmas eve. john watkins is 23-years-old. take a look at him here. he was last seen in merrimack on christmas eve, around 6:00 at night. his car was found in milford. watkins is five-foot-four, 100 pounds, with long brown hair and hazel eyes. he may be wearing glasses. call police if you' ve seen him. shelley coming up
