and meredith where the flakes are still falling in some spots. good afternoon. happy thanksgiving. we want to send it right over to meteorologist kevin skarupa to get the forecast. kevin: snow and flu activity continuing to move through central and northern areas now. we will see an additional area of precipitation make its way. southern areas in the mid to showers and wet snowflakes mixed in. close to the shoreline it could come down to raindrops. the farther north, this should be light snow making its way through the afternoon and evening. as temperatures fall into tonight, there is potential for slick spots. we should see temperatures in the 30's play out to the afternoon, and from there, a lot of areas dropping back from the mid to upper 20's to low 30's tonight. rain and snow chances involved in just a bit. erin: right now fire officials trying to figure out what sparked this 3-alarm fire in salem that left one couple displaced on thanksgiving. wmur's cherise leclerc is live in salem. and, cherise, how's the couple holding up? cherise: they are doing about as well as you could probably expect. the wife did have to be taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. her husband is on the scene watching all of this unfold. while it is a difficult day for him, he says what matters is that they are safe and the possessions are not as important. the fire chief tells us this was a tough fire to fight. there's no fire hydrants on this street which means they had to , bring water tankers. about 10 departments were called in, more than 50 firefighters. the renter told me that he saw smoke coming out of the wall and he tried to put out the fire but the smoke just continued to , billow so he and his wife knew they had to get out. while she was taken to the hospital, he remained on scene, watching his home of 10 years go up in flames. >> these things happen very fast and you don't think they are going to happen to you. but it's classic. it's thanks giving, it's snowing. it's him is like a tv show or movie -- it is almost like a tv show or movie. cherise: heartbroken -- they have not found his kitten just yet. the chief has not determined an exact cause of this fire. a neighbor was also taken to the hospital for chest pain. you can see food and coffee and water starting to be gathered for the firefighters and the renter who rents this home that went up in flames. just to give you a sense of how tightknit the community is, these firefighters and the people who lost so much today are not going without support from this neighborhood. assisting. live in salem, cherise leclerc, wmur news 9. erin: firefighters were able to rescue two people from a burning building in manchester overnight. investigators say a cigarette tossed into a trash can sparked a fire inside an apartment on elm street above cesarios pizza. dispatchers stayed on the phone with both people who were trapped until firefighters pulled them to safety. firefighters say both were mentally and physically handicapped. officials say there is water damage to both cesarios and the element lounge. the investigation continues today into a homicide in wentworth. authorities say a 60-year-old man was killed yesterday morning. they say todd downing was found inside his atwell hill road home, suffering from blunt force injuries. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. so far, no arrests have been made in the case. somersworth police say a suspected robber is behind bars 29-year-old marc beaulieu of rochester is accused of holding up the service credit union on penny lane last week. the robber got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. beaulieu was arrested this week, while he was being held at the strafford county jail on a probation violation. turning now to new york city, balloons, floats, and millions lined the streets for macy's 90th thanksgiving day parade today. but this year, concerns over isis calling the parade a big target meant beefed up security. abc's elizabeth hur is in new york with more. >> happy thanksgiving. elizabeth: a thanksgiving tradition in the big apple kicked off this year with security getting a big bump. >> we have thousands of cops out there. million of spectators out there. everyone seems to be having a good time. elizabeth: to protect the 3.5 million people expected at the macy's parade, the nypd, ready with more than 3,000 officers, bomb-sniffing dogs, and even sand-filled trucks and more than 100 blocker cars. >> it is important that those vehicles are there to give everyone a sense that this is going to be a real safe place. elizabeth: all this to prevent an attack like the one in nice, france, where the driver of a speeding truck killed 86 in july. earlier this month, isis propaganda also called the parade an excellent target and the fbi issued this warning -- holiday celebrations, beginning with thanksgiving and thar targeted by international terrorists or homegrown violent extremists. just days ago, a tradition across new hampshire, going out for a run before turkey dinner. today in manchester they held the sixth annual fisher cat 5k turkey trot. ray brewer was there and explains why this one particular race had special meaning. ray: this year they have a record number of runners, nearly 2700, and a lot of them while hoping for personal bests also have a lot to be thankful for. this year, before setting out on the streets of manchester the runners paused for a moment of silence to remember one of their own. back on november 8, two men out jogging in bedford were struck by a car. one of them, 58-year-old tom decharme, died from his injuries. the race organizers say they are working in decharme's memory to increase runner safety. >> you know, runner id program, have an id bracelet when you're there today, firing the starting pistol. near the beginning of the pack was mark laprade, this marking the start of a busy day. >> we're driving to buffalo new york to have dinner with my brother and my parents. ray: the race is definitely a social occasion, although andrea desmarais did bring in a couple of ringers. >> these two are actually heading to nationals on december 10 to go to alabama right. >> i'm hoping that maybe i can get maybe a 19 or 20. ray: and how >> i am 12. ray: and today is also about giving thanks. >> i'm thankful for the fact that i have a good job, a wife to slow down wear reflective , clothing all those things help , move the needle on runner safety. ray: millennium running says if they can get those safety measures put in place then a little bit of home for the holidays. kevin: another weight in will be on and off with this chance through the holiday weekend. erin: plus, in today's "cook's corner," it's a thanksgiving erin: detroit has passed away after he was shot in the head while on patrol tuesday near the campus of wayne state university. 29-year-old officer collin rose is the only wayne state officer to be killed in the line of duty. police say a suspect was arrested after the shooting but no charges have been filed. in the wake of the recent officer-involved shootings, the manchester police department tweeted this morning that 19 officers have been killed in the line of duty this month, tying telling officers to stay safe out there. two boston police officers back home this thanksgiving after being shot on the job. officers richard cintolo and matt morris were celebrated last night at a hockey game in their honor. friends, family, and local residents filled an east boston rink to show their support. the two were shot in a shoot-out while responding to a domestic call last month. fellow officers came to their rescue and they were also honored for their heroic actions. today. kevin: this is kind of the beginnings of "cook's corner" today a , thanksgiving feast. energy costs go up and down. at eversource, we don't like it any more than you do. it doesn't mean more money for us. it means that the market price of the energy we buy for you is changing. but we're working to increase the supply of clean, affordable energy across the region because more energy means lower energy costs for you and the communities we serve. and as the number-one provider in the nation, we're committed to helping you manage the energy you use. ever new england. eversource. >> now, meteorologist kevin skarupa with your storm watch 9 forecast. kevin: you may not have seen but bona fide light snow and a coating out of that. temperatures will be a couple degrees milder by the time it gets here. in areas that saw some raindrops out there closer to the shoreline, you will see that play out again. in inland sections, there may be a few areas that have seen snowflakes that may turn to a couple of raindrops as this come through. as temperatures continue to slide later this highs mainly in the 30's, we will see them get back closer to the freezing mark later on this evening, which could mean a couple of slick highways. i don't think it will be a widespread problem but there will be moisture on the roadways. as we go through the secondary roads and untreated services traveling around and going to families houses, not the same roads you use for the commute. they're all that in mind this evening. you see the second disturbance coming towards us. northern half of the state -- best chance of accumulation and the northern half of the state. we saw quick white coating to a quarter or half-inch of actual snow. a little break in the activity for southern new hampshire. we will see more worked its way in this afternoon. this act edge will move through by 1:30. a little bit of a break before the next batch comes in mid- late afternoon. dew points are still in the 20's. as the precipitation starts to come down and made even pick up to a light or briefly moderate consistency to it, the temperatures may slide by a couple of degrees. again, if you are in the lower range of the 30's, that could mean a few slick spots. milder air further off to the south that we are not expecting that anytime soon. as we go through the weekend we should be in the mid-40's. form of snow. the closer you get from manchester to the shoreline, mixed showers or rain shower activity. it tries to hold on overnight in the form of light snow up north and if it cools off just enough freezing drizzle in southern areas. a matter of a couple of degrees in some locations. nothing terribly heavy out of this. the storm located offshore tries to stay far enough away that we may not see anything more than scatter shower a i don't suspect it will be a complete washout tomorrow or saturday. lingering light snow in the north country. several inches of accumulation the next several days all the way through sunday up north. beyond that, a little bit of a warming trend next week. rain expected by the middle of next week. let's head to "cook's corner." sean: you know, there are so many different ways you can eat a thanksgiving meal. we are joined by helen williams from 2 home cooks in dover. what is 2 home cooks?
