we're fine, we're fine. >> these storm chasers got a really close look at the tornadoes that did major damage to oklahoma, five were killed and dozens more injured. tornadoes ripped through the southern plains as storms blew cars right off the highway. toppled homes and sent baseball-sized hail crashing through windshields. trivia time. 6:31. baltimore county named the two longest bridges. have any idea? first one? wise avenue bridge, 426 feet long. the next is where we're live this morning. 420-foot long dolefield bridge in owings mills. sherrie johnson says the bridge opens today to traffic. >> reporter: good morning. you're pretty good on the trivia there. yes, highly anticipated bridge opening. look behind me here, you can see the bridge. now, later this morning, a number of county executives will gather here in owings mills to open the bridge. this bridge marks the completion of the link between red run and lakeside boulevards. not far from the mall here. it's an important piece of transportation infrastructure that supports the owings mills growth area. this bridge is expected to carry about 42,000 cars and trucks daily. this project costs about $8 million and the bridge is actually 420 feet long, the second longest bridge in the county. and the ribbon-cutting will be held here at 11:00 this morning. baltimore county executive jim smith will be on hand all right. >> a suspect in norfolk, virginia, pulls out a gun on a convenience store clerk, demands money but a customer steps in and to save her sneaks up behind the suspect here, watch him. and he smacks him in the head with a beer bottle. the suspect then runs out and the guy shoots the man several times. the suspects recovering in the hospital this morning and police are still searching for the man who shot him. a deer took a little dip in pittsburgh's highland reservoir and rescue teams had to move in to help it get out. the deer swam in circles as rescuers sent a boat into the water to retrieve the animal. by the time she was pulled out and back on dry land exhausted. took her a few minutes oget her bearings -- to get her bearings before running back into the woods. lenny kravitz, defranco, among headliners for a benefit concert to support relief efforts. the benefit will be sunday at mardi gras world river center city which overlooks the mississippi river in new orleans. tickets cost $50, proceeds will benefit fishermen and their families whose livelihoods depend on the gulf as well as organizations that protect louisiana's coast. college students trying to eat major layoffs at legg mason. >> more than 200 people are expected to lose their jobs. first, let's check in on incredible video of the tornadoes in oklahoma. here's meteorologist justin berk. >> 6:43. we've been showing you videos from oklahoma this morning. here's what one storm chaser captured. looks like a -- basically a funnel cloud, a tornado before it reaches ground. once it touches ground kicks up dirt and debris. it's an official tornado. this is ardmore, oklahoma. you can see the storm cloud getting larger and looking more and more like a tornado. at least five deaths, about 38 reports of tornadoes yesterday. baseball-sized hail. incredible damage and destruction out there. could do it again today. as there's a moderate-to-high risk of severe storms across the central and southern plains. locally though, let's bring it back home. part of that storm system actually working its way as a rain event in ohio. you can see it back there. though we've got a clear start some of the rain pushing in through garrett county, some of the heavier rain pushing in through ohio, while i say this is part of that event we won't get the severe side of it. we stay cool and damp today, stuck in the 50s. follow the our wake-up window at the bottom of the screen. we'll have more on the rainy forecast and preakness weekend outlook coming up. 6:44. kim? >> we're looking good around the major roads. fortunately not a lot of problems, just really slow as you make your way southbound on 795 approaching the beltway. on the west side at liberty road traffic moving fairly slow. we have a couple of incidents in baltimore city. i'll get you caught up in a few minutes. back to you. scary day in the southern plains. tornadoes and violent weather swept through the area. oklahoma and kansas most specifically and this morning they are waking up to a lot of destruction. linda so is here with the recovery efforts. >> reporter: the next few weeks are not going to be easy. hundreds of homes were destroyed and thousands are without power this morning. at least five people were killed and dozens injured. the storms were part of a violent weather system that spawned twisters. among the victims, a young boy who was hit and killed by debris in his home. a man whose rv flipped over on top of him. forecasters had been predicting the storms since last week. the tornadoes have left many shaken. >> it started hailing and then it quit hailing and then just all of a sudden the wind hit and it just went dark. trucks went rocking, very lucky. very. what do you do? you just have to ride it that means 250 positions will be cut in baltimore. the cuts are the second largest round of layoffs for the company in two years. the cuts are expected to start july 1st and could save the company anywhere up to $150 million by the year 2012. 6:46. erica blasberg, a professional golfer, died yesterday in henderson, nevada, we don't know how it happened. 25 years old. the coroner's office is -- right now her only appearance on the lpga tour this year was two weeks ago when she finished 44th in in a golf tournament in mexico. police want to know who called 911. they are not ruling out foul play right now. investigators in anne arundel county believe they may finally solve the rape of an elderly woman in annapolis seven years ago. she died three years later and the case went cold but investigators received a grant that allowed them to run the dna from the rape, came back with four other hits. now police are on a manhunt for jose alexis menjivar. >> we knew she was deceased in 2007 but just on a whim we decided to go ahead and put it in. in case it may have matched to something else. we hit the jackpot with that. >> investigators say this man may be responsible for two rapes in annapolis and three in florida. if you have any information call police right away. he was an amazing friend who helped out when he was needed. that's what friends are saying on facebook. about a marine from frederick, maryland, killed in afghanistan. 21-year-old kurt shea died yesterday while fighting near hell manned province. according to his facebook page he was supposed to come home next month. the woman nominated by the president to the united states supreme court is planning to begin meeting with senators tomorrow in preparation for a confirmation hearing. republicans have given no indication that they will try to prevent a vote on elena kagan's nomination. but they are expected to grill her over her lack of judicial experience, her thin record of legal writings and her decision as dean of harvard law school. she tried to keep military recruiters from the law school campus. democracy 2010. 6:48. the governor on the top of the race to keep his job, according to a new poll. new numbers show he holds 49% to 41% lead among registered voters in his rematch with former governor bob ehrlich. though o'malley is in the lead when it comes to registered voters the race is neck and neck among all who plan to cast the ballot in november. ehrlich lost to o'malley 53% to 46% in 2006. talk about your bge bill. the utility company wants to increase the rates that it charges for delivery of electricity and gas. but says this won't effect your bill too much. bge says the 1% to 4% increases are necessary to cover costs including tree trimming, wiring poles and meters and west bge says says because of the cost of power itself that is falling most customers won't even see an increase on their bill. consumer alert, children's jewelry. claire's recalled best friend charm bracelet sets because of high levels of cadmium. the jewelry was sold at claire's stores from february of last year through january of this year. consumers should immediately take the recalled bracelets away from children and return the heart lock charms and entire bracelet set to any claire's, they will give you a refund or replacement product. there's a recall of romaine lettuce that sickened students with e. coli poisoning. it's expanding as the government tries to find the source of the contamination. it happened in oklahoma, that came from the same farm in arizona that sickened students in michigan, ohio and new york. freshway foods announced a recall of romaine lettuce last week related to the outbreaks. the chesapeake bay foundation says it plans to make a major announcement today about its suit against the environmental protection agency. the foundation sued the epa to force it to take action to reduce pollution in the bay and the epa is set to release its trying to shift responsibility on eve other, the blame game. let's go to kerry cavanaugh, in pensacola, florida, with the latest on the massive clean-up efforts. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. all eyes on washington today, a lot of finger pointed expected. in the meantime bp hopes to have a second containment dome in place by the end of the week. it's significantly smaller than the first one they tried last weekend that failed. they are calling this one the top hat. i believe the idea is to get a smaller one in place faster before any of the ice crystals can begin to form and clog things up. in florida, we've been spared any environmental impact so far but we've been talking a lot about the economic impact to businesses, a lot of tourists scared away, cancelling vacations and businesses saying they are already feeling the pinch. back to you. >> we're looking at animation of that top hat now. the first plan didn't work. has there been discussion of what happens if this doesn't work? >> reporter: there have been some other ideas including what they are calling the junk shot. they talked about maybe stuffing this gushing well with garbage and trash as a way to plug it up but again, they are looking towards the end 69 week to have that -- of the week to have that top hat in place and hopefully this will be the fix. >> do you hear anything from the people on the beach? what are people saying? >> a lot of people coming to pensacola beach are trying to get here while they can, enjoy the beaches while they can. like i said even though there's no oil here yet people know as long as this continues to gush there will be an impact. they love their beaches, they are beautiful and trying to enjoy them as much as they can while they remain that way. >> thank you. the setup for us, chilly, mostly clear, high clouds mixed in with the early morning sunshine but 42 the latest check in baltimore. 30s on the north side, even some patchy frost but not as cold as yesterday. a little warm-up, 50s, that is under the canopy of clouds and rain from ohio through west virginia. that is the stuff heading in our direction. so even though the cloud line is just north in through york and adams county and back west of frederick this stuff races in, we lose that sun pretty quickly and then we're going to watch the storm, the remains of that huge outbreak across kansas and oklahoma. it's this low pressure pushing through southern sections of wisconsin this morning. heavy rain from wisconsin and through michigan on in to ohio, that is the stuff that locks in that cold air we've got in place. and just turning into a chilly afternoon. so as this storm approaches from the west it actually increases the wind flow from the ocean and we lock in with an east wind, a lot of moisture which means rain begins sometime during the afternoon, most of us between 1:00 and 3:00, begin to see the first signs of the rainfall and heavier stuff back to the west that could move through just during the afternoon activities, the kids playing sports after school, even driving home could be a little sloppy and a little in jeopardy, as periods of rain continue overnight through tomorrow morning. then we turn partly sunny, there's clearing. back in the warm air tomorrow, could spawn thunderstorms in the afternoon. just sporms spotty storms, then more cold air thursday. 58 our 2-degree guarantee. bring that rain jacket, it will come with the rainfall during the afternoon into the evening hours. we'll slide back to about 52, there could be periods of fog i-70 on the outer loop, eight minutes. four minutes from whitemarsh boulevard to the beltway on 95 southbound. and the harbor tunnel thruway from the split to 295, that is seven minutes so far. coming
