Maryland towns hit the hardest. The money will be coming to the federal government. And it will be coming to the lower shore. The money will be distributed on the basis of need. Reporter the money goes toward the reconstruction of homes, businesses and their economy. It was devastating. The entire town was flooded. And when i say the entire town, i mean, the entire town. Everything was flooded. Reporter in chrisfield, coffins floated out of graves. Residents were rushed to shelter, the town docks swept away. Thats where our commerce, our baked commerce comes through every day. Now theyre still rebuilding. We know the ocean city pier is taking a beating as well. Reporter still plenty of work to be done. More than 200 maryland homes are still in need of repair. Try to get the help we need to start rebuilding. Reporter now, with the latest aid that was just received, senator mikulskis office has received a total 74 million in aid since last year. Joining me mere, here, meteorologist Chelsea Ingram. They certainly have a lot to rebuild. But better than it was this time last year. First i want to take to you first warning radar, during super storm sandy. This extremely powerful storm. It arrived actually, ahead of schedule. And picked up some steam as it started to move inland. Was moving around 28 miles per hour. It made landfall on october 29th. And it affected all of maryland. Were talking about western maryland, all the way over onto the eastern shore. And it brought impacts in the form of extreme winds. Also brought rain. And it brought some snow. While it was a big event for maryland, its impacts, of course, were felt across the entire eastern sea board. Some of the greatest impacts for us, though, here at home, were in the form of precipitation. Some spots saw anywhere from 8 to 12 inches. Or upwards of 12 inches of rainfall. And then also, more than 1 foot of snowfall in some spots out in western maryland. So we saw all different types of weather now. Its about a year later. And the weather certainly a different scenario out here. We have a warmup on the way out here. Bob has more coming up in your exclusive first warning forecast. For now, lets go back to you on tv hill. Coming up in just a few minutes, super storm sandys impact on ellis island. And marylands role in preserving historical documents. A murdersuicide leaves three families heartbroken. Details emerge. Tonight, the fire union, who worked closely with one of the victims, is giving us a closer look at andrew hoffman. A Police Officer who apparently murdered his exgirlfriend, and her new boyfriend issue a beloved firefighter. Reporter at the engine 14 fire house on holland street in southwest baltimore, the doors are draped with black bunting. A tribute to 27yearold firefighter andrew hoffman. Hoffman and his new girlfriend, 26yearold marie heartman was hartman were gunned down inside his home. Hartmans younger sister escaped out a window. They say the killer was hartmans hartmans hartmans exboyfriend, chris fer lee robinson. Hartman, the mother of a 6year old, leaves behind a devastated family. We just want to know answers. We want to know why this happened. Reporter hoffmans death hits especially hard at the fire department, where he was hailed a hero. Rescuing a man from a fire on gilmore street. And early ther year, he was even interviewed by wjz. I couldnt believe my eyes. Reporter recognized for his quick action to save this 3 yearold boy, who had wandered away from home. Rescuers say he was heroic, even in the moments before he was killed. The night he was killed, he did all he could to protect his girlfriend and her sister, who survived the terrible ordeal. And i think, without andyy s help, andys help, that would not have been possible. Reporter wjz collected items from andys home, needed for funeral arrangements. Has family released a statement, saying our hearts are absolutely broken over the loss of our son, brother, grandson and uncle. Its hard to go forward without him. But we know andy died a hero. That is the way he lived his life. And we couldnt be prouder of him. Reporter a Family Member tells wjz that Funeral Plans for hoffman are set for saturday. Firefighters plan to be part of that tribute as they honor their fallen friend. Were live. Baltimore city police say that their thoughts and prayers are with those who are affected by this tragedy. After a year of negotiations, settlements are announced for the more than 2 dozen Abuse Victims of former penn state football coach, Jerry Sandusky. Mary is in the newsroom with more on how much money the university will pay out. Reporter penn state says it will pay more than 59 million to 26 young men over claims of child sex abuse at the hands of Jerry Sandusky. Sandusky was convicted last year on 45 criminal counts of abusing 10 boys over a 15year period. He was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison. The case tarnished the reputation of penn state and its late football coach, joe paterno. Penn state released a statement, saying in part, quote, we hope this is a step forward in the healing process for those hurt by mr. Sandusky and another step forward for penn state. Reporter thank you, mary. Sandusky lost a bid earlier this month for a new trial. Three men are arrested in connection with a deadly shooting at a Prince Georges County hotel. Surveillance video shows at the counter last month. The suspect sees the money. And there was a confrontation. Chavez was shot several times. He died at the scene. Police say all three men are facing first and seconddegree murder charges. First the verdict. Now the penalty in the civil lawsuit. The civil lawsuit against cardiologist mark medei. A maryland state trooper is recovering tonight, after his cruiser is hit along 695, in baltimore county. You can see the damage at the rear of his patrol car. Trooper first class, Christopher Hall was sitting inside his vehicle at the time. Investigating another accident on the beltway, near route 702 when he was struck. He was transported to shock trauma. The 63yearold driver who struck him is charged with violating the moveover law, and failing to control the speed of his vehicle, to avoid a collision am. Well, a welcomed warmup our area today. Lets check in with alex for more. This is it. Theyre calling the maryland live casino owner, David Cordish to the stand. The reason all comes down to money. When stents were placed into the heart of businessman weinberg, he thought he had severe heart disease. Until the lawsuits hit. Charging that he performed the procedure on hundreds when they didnt need it. Most would settle out of court with medei. Last week, a jury found in weinbergs favor. Now, the jury has been called in to decide damages of weinberg, based in large part on his past dealings withings with this man. Please welcome, the chairman of the company, David Cordish. Reporter for years, they were partners. Until weinberg feared his health was in jeopardy and he had to cut hours. He went from all type a, all in. David cordish said to his partner, youre either all in or all out. When weinberg found he had a Healthy Heart issue he tried to get his job back. But cordish said, when you leave me, you cant come back. Reporter during the years he thought he was ill, cordish went on to open the maryland live casino and other project the. Weinbergs lawyers say if he hadnt received a faulty diagnosis, he would haved 4 of the projects for three major contracts. Reporter wein burgs lawyers say those projects cost glen weinberg, 58 million in lost income. As we were telling you earlier, medeis lawyers say glen weinbergs numbers are speculation. One year after being severely damaged today, parts of ellis island reopened to the public. But it is still without nearly a million of its artifacts. Theyre here, nearly a hundred miles away in maryland. Monique griego has more on why they arent returned home. Most of the artifacts were actually left unharmed. And theyll be staying here in maryland, until all of the repairs and upgrades are completed on that museum. These are all materials from ellis island. Reporter bob from hyattsville shows us aisle after aisle, of historic pieces from new yorks ellis island. The facility which houses millions of museum items for the National Park service, received the collection in january, after super storm sandy swamped the island with 8 feet of water. Knocked out the power. So you couldnt maintain the proper environmental controls and Security Systems to house the Museum Collections there. Reporter today, parts of the island, which welcomed millions of immigrants to america, reopened to the public. But the vast majority of the museums artifacts, about 1 million, remained here. Textiles. Its just a remarkable collection of personal objects that people left behind. Reporter some of the more sensitive objects have to be kept in this very, very cold storage vault. Most of them are film projects you can see stored here on the vaults. This is a passenger list from 1902. Reporter sandramans team showed us some of the document which showed immigrants arriving from the island. This book, signed by the turn of the century is signed by people visiting the statue of liberty. All of these will remain, until repairs and upgrades are completed at ellis island. Sanderman is proud to be preserving this piece of history. We owe it to future and previous generations to protect and preserve these items. Reporter students from three baltimore middle schools are competing into rocket into poly. The students, all in the ingenuity project, which fast tracks students to excel in math and science projects. I think it was great. I enjoyed the project. It was really fun. Working together with the team. And having to build it all in one hour. Reporter the goal is to see how far the rocket will travel. But nasa astronaut, don thomas, from towson university, tells me, it is also about learning to collaborate. They were working as a team. These were groups of five or six. Lawmakers are defending spying practices. They argue places such as france are safer because of the nsas surveillance. Breaking news right now about r b Singer Chris Brown. We have just learned the charges against brown have been reduced to a misdemeanor. The 24yearold singer was just in washington, d. C. Court, right now on a felony assault charge. Brown was accused, along with his bodyguard, of punching a man, trying to get in with a singer this weekend. He was in washington performing at a nightclub, as part of a homecoming for howard university. This incident could jeopardize browns freedom. He remains on probation for assaulting his exgirlfriend, rihanna. Brown will be released. After spending two years behind bars, the former doctor convicted of causing Michael Jacksons death is a free man tonight. Conrad murray says he is elated to be out of jail. He was released after serving half of a fouryear sentence. California prison rules allowed for the Early Release by giving additional credit for sime served. He was convicted of manslaughter in 2011, after a jury found him guilty of administering the lethal dose of the sleep agent propofol. Penn state reaches a settlement with the victims who claim Jerry Sandusky abused them when they were children. Susan mcginnis respects for wjz from washington. Reporter penn state has agreed to pay almost 60 million to settle the claims of 26 men, who allege they were sexually abused by former football coach Jerry Sandusky. Rodney erickson released a statement, saying we hope this is another step forward in the healing process by those hurt by mr. Sandusky and another step forward for penn state. We cannot undo what was done but we can and must do everything to learn from this to ensure it will never happen again. Sandusky was convicted in 2012 of abusing 10 boys. The insurance says Liability Insurance policies will cover this. Legal experts say that was likely enough to push penn state to settle. And that this also saves victims from having to revisit their traumas in court. The scandal also brought down head coach joe paterno, who was stripped of 100 victories and lost his job, after failing to report sandusky to police. Paterno died about two months after he was fired. Sandusky maintains he is innocent and is seeking a new trial. There are six additional claims from alleged victims that are still pending. The price of gasoline continues to drop down 5 cents in the past week. A nationwide survey shows the average cost of a gallon of regular, 3. 30. According to triple a mid atlantic, that number could drop even further. With prices dropping closer to 3 a gallon during the remainder of the year. Across britain, crews are cleaning up after the strongest storm to hit england in years passes through. Alfonsoalphonso van marsh reports for wjz, its left 13 people dead and caused extensive damage. The powerful storm, with winds as strong as 99 miles an hour, whipped up 25foot waves, blue up buildings and tore trees out of the ground. Rescue crews battled dangerous conditions as they searched for a boy called out to sea. A 17yearold girl was also killed when a tree fell on her trailer home n. London, a massive crane crashed down on the cabinets offices. No one was hurt. Here in london, a tree fell on that home, triggering a gas explosion that destroyed at least three houses. Unfortunately, three bodies have been found. Bodies of a male and female. Reporter the storm dubbed storma gedon has left more than a quarter Million People without electricity. Nationwide, some Train Service was suspended over concerns trees could land on the tracks. With 130 flight were delayed or canceled at heathrow airport. Airline officials now say the flights are running a reduced schedule. Authorities say the storm did less damage than feared in part because they sounded the alarm well ahead of time about a possible catastrophe. Today, the ravens signed free agent running back, bernard scott, who last played for the cincinnati bengals. Scott hasnt played in more than a year now. He had been out recovering from knee surgery. And the ravens bring him on, hoping he can add depth to their running back position. Reporter we played him at cincinnati. And hes got all of the skills as far as perimeter running. Hes a speed guy and perimeter. Always done a good job with pass protection as well. Hes a threat. We saw him bra today. Looked good. Had a good start. Well see where it goes. Backup running back Bernard Pierce suffered a hamstring injury. Harbaugh said the ravens will wait and see how they will use bernard scott. The ravens next opponent is the cleveland browns.
