with the largest number of inmates in delaware. the inmates there have complete control of the building according to the department of correction. they tell us that the inmates took three to five guards hostage. response teams and the delaware state police are on scene right now working to get things back in order. as it sands right now, there is -- as it stands right now, there is still no information out there how it all started. once we find that out we'll let you know asap. from the satellite center, i'm q mccray, abc7 news. jonathan: thanks. stay with abc7 for breaking news updates even when you are away from your television. sign up at wjla.com/text and pick which alerts you want sent from the newsroom, weather, news or even metro. it will happen for you. also happening for us, maryland state police helicopters grounded. alison: that is right. inspections now being done on all ten choppers that respond to emergencies. michelle: this afternoon, just a few of them are ready to fly again. jonathan: the problem is stemming from the rotors that keep them in the alison: kevin lewis is at andrews where they are housed. how did they catch the issue? kevin: a mechanic noticed cracking paint around a rotor blade on one of the choppers. out of an abundance of caution, the aviation commander ordered immediate repairs of the entire fleet that consists of a10 179 choppers across the state. word now we are in day four of the mandated reports. the choppers back in frederick is back in service. this afternoon the chopper at croon yous should be repaired. by tomorrow, the chopper in st. mary's county should be fixed. but due to the delay in parts and shipping the chopper in cumberland and salsbury might take a few more days to restore. the u.s. park playlist and the delaware state police helped them with the emergency helicopter missions since sunday. m.s.p. telling us se never interrupted. went on to explain unlike private medevac companies that often charge the patients tens of thousands of dollars for short helicopter ride, m.s.p. bills its patients absolutely nothing. we're live outside joint base andrews. i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. alison: all right. thank you very much. well, a homeowner in prince george's county might want to think about moving. his house is target of really bad drivers. this is in the 6600 of block of cipriano road that intersects with all cross streets, good luck road. john gonzalez with the unbelievable string of bad luck. john: at 2:00 this morning the driver came down this hill, jumped the curb right here. that is where they lost control. you can see the tire marks all through the front yard. the car ending up right there. crashing right into the bottom floor of this split foyer. the cipriano road. the homeowner 88-year-old leonard miller says he woke up to the loud crash and came downstairs and saw the silver honda, the front of it at least in his living room. now get this. miller says this is the fifth time a car has crashed into his home since he moved in, in 1971. now police say it's unclear why the driver lost control but take a look. the damage is extensive. the driver actually left the car, taken by someone else in another car to the hospital. >> it's a 30-mile-per-hour speed limit here. but these people come over the hill. what happens, they're speeding and they hit the curb. then that point on it's a hydroplane coming down. john: the homeowner was not injured. the driver's condition is unknown this afternoon. an engineer looked at the house and says there is no structural damage so miller is staying here. he was offered a overnight but he didn't want to leave the gaping hole exposed. it's being boarded up this afternoon. in lanham, john gonzalez, back to you inside. alison: thank you. it's the first day on the job for the new d.c. public schools chancellor wilson. sam ford caught up with him this morning to introduce himself. >> good morning. sam: chancellor wilson began his first official day on the job with the principal of brightwood elementary school. then touring the classrooms. first stop, fifth great during math where he spoke and listened to a number of the students. next in this 75% hispanic school and english as a second language focus class. >> i'm enjoying it. sam: he came from california and says his focus will be academics but also engaging students in the activities they like fr music to robotics. >> if students are engaged they come to school more and get in trouble left and perform better academically. sam: and then the mayor joined him for one of the fun parts of the job. >> i wanted to be here for the chancellor on the first day to announce you are the teacher of the year. brad: they will have to work out a compromise. a lot of people in the area do not get paid when they call in sick. that is something that the legislature and the governor both want to tackle this year. governor larry hogan's third state of the state speech today at the halfway point of his first term in office was long on listing accomplishments. >> for two years now we have been doing exactly what we said we would do. brad: he spoke of familiar priorities. but this year he added his voice to call paid sick leave law in maryland. >> so let's strike a compromise. considering the needs of maryland employees while not hurting the small business job creators. brad: potato valley restaurant owner barbara pays close attention when talk in the state house across the street turn to issues that affect her bottom line and says businesses should offer employees paid leave. barbara: i do support that. it's the price of doing business. brad: as always in state house, the devil is in the details. hogan wants to require businesses with 50 or more employees to offer paid sick leaves. democrats are pushing a bill with a 30-employee threshold and are blasting the hogan plan. >> the details that he laid out are from the far right playbook. we want something that is going to be important to middle class, working families in the state of maryland. brad: barbara hopes a compromise can be worked out. >> it's good for all business. good for the community. brad: so that is something that the governor talked about in the state of the state. we are working on another story at 5:00 that focuses on what he didn't talk about. the governor focused exclusively on issues inside the state of maryland. democrats say he should have addressed some of the issues going on in washington as well. you will hear some of that as i said when we come back at 5:00. in annapolis, brad bell. jonathan: have you seen her? richard: they are speaking out today. george washington university, the university of maryland, 21 of the students from the banned countries going to school here. none of them have been detained but there is a lot of concern about the future. voices of dissent at the campus. >> fearnous that exist that didn't exist 12 days ago. richard: student and faculty protesting trump's order to ban travel from seven majority muslim countries. she grew up in cairo but calls los angeles home. her father came to the u.s. in 1972. he came here because he thought america was free and inclusive. >> for in the travel order is personal. 21 of the students are from the banned countries and they have been urgedded not to leave. >> it affects concrete students are not sure if they can come here. richard: the trump administration arguing the refugee vetting process is not stringent enough. >> i came as a refugee. my family came as a refugee. richard: he says he and others of the green card holders not affected by the ban are fearful of leaving and not coming ba >> my family was able to make a life and a living here. i feel it's being threatened. that is not what america is about. richard: a.u. says it is offering counseling and legal services for the students who need the information and they continue to recruit from the international community. they say they will continue to foster a welcoming and an inclusive environment for all. live in northwest washington, richard reeve, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you. a few hundred people showed up to protest at the university of maryland. students are marching on behalf of the classmates who are affected by the extreme vetting order. still ahead for us at today at 5:00, the message they are trying to send to the school's president. apple now has condemned the president's executive order on immigrants and travel but the tech giant is considering legal action as well. c.e.o. tim cook says that the order is affected hundreds of apple employees. he tells the "wall street journal" he reached out and asked if it could be repealed. amazon and expedia joined the courtroom battle to challenge the travel ban. michelle: we are learning tonight prosecutors say the widow of a man who shot up an orlando nightclub was more involved than what has been admitted. prosecutors say noor salman went with omar mateen on scouting trips to pulse and knew his plan to kill. 49 people died in the attack. 53 others were hurt. she is charged with helping plan the attack. her lawyers say she was a battered spouse who knew nothing about mateen's plans. jonathan: this turned out to be the hookup from hell. ahead from online to reality comes a bizarre confession. she said she wanted to be a serial killer and that was just the beginning. michelle: how about this?
