in just a moment. anchor: first we want to get a sense of what's happening with the crowds lingering on the streets. anchor: we begin with tom who was out among the crowds this evening. what's happening now? reporter: calm has been restored. that was not the case about 45 minutes ago. let me set the scene for you. a few minutes after the curfew at 10:00 tonight there was a group that didn't want to leave. police formed a line and then they advanced and this video shows what happened next. a number of folks there being taken into custody di. many being tackled, hit with batons. these were all protesters who refused to leave when that 10:00 curfew started after a long day of marches and rallies. a vast majority of foblings decided to go home before the curfew took effect. a group formed a circle and decided they were not leaving. one said they felt now that charged were not announced they felt there shouldn't be a curfew anymore. they vowed it would be peaceful but also vowed they were not going to move. when police advanced a number ran away. a number held their ground and they were ultimately taken into custody. we got a chance to talk to one of the protesters after he had been taken into custody. this is what he had to say. >> i was just sitting. i don't like people that kill people that live in this city. i'm on the wrong side apparently right now. reporter: shortly after that, that man was put in the police van and he and a whole number of others were taken into custody. here, again, they had decided to violate tonight's 10:00 occurify and police did not waste a lot of time taking the folks who made that decision into custody. 10:00 they formed a circle. by 10: 05, police advanced. they held their ground and again, police moved in here tonight outside baltimore's city hall. anchor: thanks, tom. abc 7 was the first to report that gray's fatal injury happened inside that police transport van. investigators have been working around the clock to understand the sequence of events that happened that day. now a clearer picture has emerged of who these officers were and how their actions may have played a role in the death of freddie gray. chris what have you learned? reporter: over the years you can just imagine how many times these six officers that were just charged today in the death of freddie gray walked somebody into the police station and had them booked. they were the ones booked and they learned today they were suspended. >> i know it is not true. i know him. reporter: why do you say it is not him? >> it is just not him. no way. reporter: since age 9, this man who only wanted to be knowned a daniel has known officer william g. porter. we caught up with daniel outside porter's home. when you heard, what were your thoughts? >> probably most likely not true. reporter: porter is one of six baltimore police officers charged in the death of freddie gray and they range in the age from 25-54. four have bail set at $350,000. the rest at $250,000. according to online court records, all of them have bail bonds men. those who live in this neighborhood with porter were just as shocked as daniel when we told them to have charges. no one did want to go on camera but daniel did defend his friend. you don't think he did this? >> no, sir. reporter: these six officers will be in court again together on may 7. they are all going to be there at the same time. if they are all found guilty of all of these charges they face, they face anywhere from 20-63 years in jail. anchor: thanks chris. the frat ernl order of police were quick to respond calling the charged today a rush to judgment. >> in my 20 years as a law enforcement officer, and 16 years as an attorney, i have never seen such a rush to file charged. anchor: he went on to say that the union has grave concerns about the prosecution of its officers. anchor: business in baltimore is far from back on track. many were left with nothing after monday's riots and even with deep roots in the community, the road to recovery is long. richard spoke to some of those affected. richard? reporter: west north avenue has been at ther in of these protests. look now around me. almost nothing here. there was a large con tings of police. a lot of businesses have been closing early, not just because of the curfew but also because of concerns about safety. west north avenue in baltimore. rocked by protests, a heavy police presence, and businesses on lockdown mode. >> they had nowhere to go because they destroyed all the stores. reporter: even inside george butler's barbershop, it is hard to escape the fallout from the freddie gray arrests. >> they are just celebrating. a vill electricityry for a cause. reporter: he knows that several businesses constrained from the occur are hurting. >> a lot of the businesses are hurting like the bars. >> all the stores are closing early because of the confusion. there are curfews too. they are losing money in a lot of places. reporter: this burnt out c.v.s. is an example. a volunteer group called for women open, they are passing out clothes, toiletries and other items for families that used to shop here. >> good is coming out what has been torn done. sometimes things have to be broken in order to be built back up again. reporter: some hope despite those closed store fronts. if you don't have commerce you can't run your business. you can't make any money. tomorrow night the mayweather-pacquiao fight is scheduled on pay-her-view. a lot of folks were going to watch it in bars and restaurants around here and that is not going to happen now. anchor: fire marshals have charged a man who they believe punctured a fire hose. greg bailey was charged. the fire hose was punctured as the cruise was trying to extinguish a fire at that c.v.s. on monday. investigators credit social media for helping them catch that suspect. anchor: we're seeing activity all over the place, closer to home here rather than in baltimore. tonight small pockets of protesters on the streets of d.c. this group marched through china town. they were shouting get off the sidewalk get into the streets. along with no justice no peace. anchor: as we mentioned, there are several rallies planned in baltimore this weekend. the national guard is staying there and the curfew remains in effect. stay with abc 7. we will have continuing live team coverage. anchor: let's move on now to other news breaking now. three people shot, one fighting for their life after a shooting in capital heights on the 1,400 block of richie road. we have a crew on the scene now. we'll bring you more information as soon as we get it. anchor: we're following breaking news out of hanover county, virginia where police have issued an amber alert. he is believed to be with his father, jason pollard. he could be in danger. he is driving a 2002 white nissan. if you see jamieson or pollard, call 911 right away. anchor: a bitter overcast end to the week. temperatures in the 80's. steve here now with details. anchor: we have a big warm-up on the way but it is going to take another day or so before we finally begin to feel it. a few showers mainly to the west of d.c. moving to the south and really won't amount to a whole lot. we'll see highs in the lower 70's. i'll talk about daytime highs in the 80's and for how long in just a few minutes. anchor: steve thank you. new at 11:00, the real life olivia pope headed to baltimore? sources tell cnn that judy smith has been hired by the city in the wake of the gray death investigation. smith is a communications expert who inspired the tv show "scandal." a recent episode dramatized the recent outrage after the death of an unarmed black man. searches continue after a garage collapses at the watergate complex. >> all of a sudden, we saw smoke coming from that lighted area there. we saw construction workers flying out. everybody left. anchor: next in a live report what investigators are saying about a possible cause. anchor: police are on the scene of a triple anchor: happing happening now. a section of the parking garage at the water gate hotel reduced to rubble. what's the story? reporter: that work is going on into the night and we're told well into the weekend on what is being called a recovery mission. let's show you what's going on now as we speak. tonight crews are working to make sure it is safe enough for the searchers to get in and do their job. the collapse happened around 10:00 this morning after a water main break. three section s of the garage pancaked on to each other. a cadaver dog got a possible hit in the rubble. they have to search and see if there might be a body there. now construction on the hotel is suspended and businesses are shut down. residents have been told they can enter their condo at no risk. they had power tonight but no water. >> we have been told in terms of the cars new york city access for at least 16-18 hours. they have had structural engineers going in there looking at the facility. we'll have to wait and see. reporter: now so far no one has been reported missing. all the construction workers and workers in that complex have been accounted for but it is a public garage so continue searching. we're told no cause for that collapse is known as of yet but that work will continue around the clock. anchor: thank you. a solemn vigil for the victims of the earthquake in nepal. more than 6,000 were killed in the quake and 14,000 were injured. the campus ministry has established the fund to support humanitarian and disaster relief efforts and there were donation boxes all around the campus. anchor: the man accused of raping a none in prince george's arrested without bond. he broke into the woman's home in chillum and attacked her. his lawyer is requesting a mental evaluation before his next court date. he was charged in the past with secretly video taping women. anchor: the day cease of maryland has been asking for heather cook's resignation. she is no longer employeed with the diocese. the former bishop goes on trial on manslaughter and other charges in june. anchor: one d.c. man served congressmen at the capital everyday but at night he sleeps on the streets. charles gladden's story just didn't sit well with a popular celebrity. nathan morris started a gofundme page. tonight that page has raised more than $23,000. anchor: wow. let's hope it ends in a fresh start. anchor: what a story. stan: nice to have a story with a happy ending. anchor: isn't it?
