netflix series "making a murderer" put steven avery back in the headlines ... zellner and her chicago law firm signed on to represent him earlier this year. now avery's supporters are hopeful for a bombshell. zellner tweeted last month " a tsunami of new evidence is on the way" her tweets indicate her case focuses on "planted evidence" "cellphone tower records"...and "dna samples"... she even hinted at a new suspect. avery and his nephew ... brendan dassey ... have been in prison for nearly a decade ... convicted of the 2005 murder of theresa halbach. avery is serving a life sentence in waupun. if avery's motion is filed this week ... it will come two weeks after a federal judge overturned dassey's conv whether to retry dassey ... or whether he'll be released from prison. adlib to weather we're through most of this morning's rain, and it's time for things to clear up! we'll see a mix of sun and clouds through the afternoon while humidity steadily drops. highs will reach the low 80s. today: partly to mostly sunny. humidity dropping through the afternoon. high: 82 dewpoint: wind: nw 5-10 mph three men facing charges in connection to the unrest in milwaukee are expected in court today. they're accused of breaking into "clark's beer and liquor" store near 47th and burleigh. charged with burglary. 22-year-old "joseph lindsey" and 20- year-old "devon love" are each charged with entry into a locked building. about midnight on sunday, august 14th -- surveillance video shows several men inside the dark liquor store with flashlights. ..smashing glass cases and pulling liquor off shelves. the owner of "clark's liquor" estimates the total amount stolen-- plus the damage could reach 125- thousand-dollars. milwaukee police department. state representative "leon young" says he will be proposing legislation that would require 40- percent of all new milwaukee police officer hires-- to come from low income zip codes. he says m-p-d would then be more representative of the people it polices. alderman bob donovan chairs the city public safety committee. he doesn't oppose the idea, but says candidates still must be qualified. if you hire more people, african americans, from the community they have a better relationship than somebody who is outside. i would hope that our police department hires people by the content of their character and nothing else. we reached out to the milwaukee police department for comment-- but we were referred to the fire and police commission... to answer hiring questions. this proposal is in the very early stages-- and has not yet been now on to a developing story --- elm grove police are looking for a suspect they say took off after a traffic stop. police say they pulled the man over about eight last night near "brookfield square mall" for not having a license plate or wearing a seat belt. officials say that's when the 23-year-old gave the officer a fake name and ran away. the police officer chased after the suspect -- but never caught up to him. we're told he's wanted for fleeing and obstructing an officer. if police. a two- year- old boy is dead and his mother tells fox6 it didn't have to happen. police say the boy was crawling though a window when it fell down on him. fox6's myra sanchick talked to the little boy's mother, who says she believes a simple thing would have saved her child. he just loved to go outside , loved to play, loved to run. tuesday afternoon michael mccoy the third may have had the when he crawled feet first through an open window at a house near fortieth and wright. before he cleared the window the upper sash came crashing down, killing him. that was my baby and what am i going to tell my daughter, she doesn't have her brother any more? the mother says baby michael's thirteen year old uncle was watching him at the grandmother's home, but fell asleep. when he awoke many looked for the child, but it took at least a half hour before they discovered michael dangling from the boy's grandmother asked the landlord to put on screens. i just feel if he would have put screens on the windows, taken that precaution. my son would have been looking out the window not hanging out of it the city of milwaukee department of neighborhood services says there should have been a screen on the window. i still can't grasp the fact my son's not here no more and a mother wants other parents to know what can happen. put screens on, locks on the windows . yes there's a lesson in this i'm just asking people put screens on the windows because this is just a tragedy that could have been prevented michael's mother says there are many messages and that's why she's sharing her story. but it all boils down to one terrible tragedy. her two year old son did not survive. reporting in milwaukee myra s guidelines at u-w milwaukee have some students arguing the university is censoring them. u-w-ms "center for inclusive excellence" debuted its 'just words' campaign last year. there are about a dozen words or phrases the group believes some people on campus could find offensive. they include "ghetto"-- "lame"-- "crazy"-- "nazi"-- and even "politically used as a way to deflect issues. other words like "crazy" create a negative image of people with mental illness. a campus spokesman says the words are not banned... these are only suggestions to draw attention to words that some students might find hurtful. jh 'were not saying you cant say some of those words - but some of those words can be construed as microaggressions.' cm 'i dont personally find any of those words offensive - i think the use of them is all about who you are with.' were told 'r-as' have gone throughr student living on campus feels impacted by another students choice of words. we have more details on a u-s soldier killed in afghanistan... we now know he has ties to wisconsin. 28- year old staff sergeant matthew -v- thompson is a 2006 brookfield central high school graduate -- and also attended marquette university. he was killed by a roadside bomb tuesday, while on foot patrol in soldiers were wounded in the blast. the "elmbrook school district" released a statement on thompson's death saying: "we offer our deepest condolences to matthew's wife-- parents-- and sisters... as well as our sincere gratitude for his service to our country." they also plan on honoring thompson with a moment of silence at tonight's home football game. the search continues for survivors after a devastating earthquake hits central italy. ...the towns hit the hardest and how many lost their lives. down in indiana. ...a look at the damage, and the other problems people there are now facing. plus -- some good news for survivors of the orlando nightclub shooting. ...what one hospital is doing for the at at&t, we believe in access. the opportunity for everyone to explore a digital world full of possibilities. connecting with family, friends and the things that matter most. crews - and even bystanders -- continue the search for survivors after a devastating earthquake. officials say 241 people have died from the 6-point-2 magnitude quake. it struck about 3-30 local time in central italy yesterday morning. three towns were hit the hardest -- but the tremors could be felt in rome -- that's about 100 miles away. the damage is so severe -- the civil protection agency says no one was allowed to sleep there last night. man is paying especially close attention to the search for survivors in italy. his cousins haven't been heard from since the earthquake hit. today. across america... people in indiana are beginning the clean- up process, after multiple tornadoes touched down in the state yesterday. homes and businesses were without power. fox's jackie ibanez has the latest. marsh says: "i went into the bathroom, called 911. i tried to push the door, the wind was blowing so fast. i was disturbed because i've never seen anything like this in my life. and then that was it, i ran downstairs. i was so scared." terrifying moments for many as several indiana wednesday... destroying homes and vehicles. a powerful e-f-three tornado may have touched down in howard county... with the worst damage in the city of kokomo. rogers says: "this is a very severe outbreak. no one was killed... and about a dozen injured... as those who saw the tornados rushed for cover. redmon says: "we were looking out the window and right across the cornfield, a tornado touched down. so we headed for the crazy." republican vice presidential nominee indiana governor mike pence now leaving the campaign trail to head back home to his home state to meet with those affected. pence says: "as governor of indiana, i have no higher priority than the safety of the people of our state. and so we're headed home and we're gonna be home so long as it takes." thousands are now without power due to the storm. goodnight says: "a lot of power outages throughout the city, even in is stepping in --providing shelter to those affected by the heavy flooding in southern louisiana. the group will be bringing in temporary housing units for homeowners displaced by the floods. the governor of louisiana says the mobile homes repair houses. the governor adds that the mobile homes meet higher regulatory standards than the trailers used after hurricane katrina in 2005. officials at the "orlando regional medical center" say they will not bill survivors from the orlando nightclub shooting. most of the victims were taken to "orlando regional" back in june... after "omar ma-teen" opened fire inside the club... killing 49-people. costs could exceed five million dollars, but say it will not bill any of the survivors for its services. doctors treated 12-victims of the shooting, "i see people getting run over. i've seen tons of vandalism. i've seen hit and runs." some neighbors say it's due to the number of homes bought solely as packers party homes or short-term rentals. "these people don't care what they do in those other tuesday night, ashwaubenon's village board passed an ordinance that will only make 22 homes eligible for short-term rental permits. "we're at a point where our schools don't have enough children in them. we need families to move in and those homes are being bought for weekend use and that shouldn't happen." the homes in the new overlay district still must apply for a short-term rental permit, which comes with says four of the homes were included because of potential impact from the new titletown district. there is a fear those homes might not be able to sell without the short-term rental option. "you didn't buy an r1 residential home for your family expecting to have transient housing next door to you. it's not what was proposed and it shouldn't be proposed." "we get 30 to 50 animals a day and if we are lucky we return or adopt out maybe 10 to 15 a day" its the busiest time of the year at madacc "so we can never keep up with the overflow." but shelter leaders can make the animals more comfortable they just completed a 3 million dollar renovation. a huge outdoor play area.. a surgical suite... and brand new kennels. "there used to be 45 cats in this room, now there are 16 so post renovation they have been able to double their living space which is "since weve expanded our adoption program and so many animals are spending more time here it was really important to give them a better quality of life." madacc is running 'adoptapolooza ' ...an adoption promotion through the end of october...hoping to place more animals in forever homes. fees for adult cats are waived...and adult pit bull mixes are 45 dollars. " we have every shape and size cat and dog you could possibly imagine" shelter for a few weeks ...are free. "they dont necessarily have behavior issues or they arent difficult to adopt they have just been here slightly longer" you can fill out an adoption application online or at the shelter.
