when people ask me what it's like to win an olympic medal, i tell them, "you already know." the medals you've earned are all around you. your bronze. your silver. your gold. and liberty mutual insures them all. liberty mutual is proud to insure every team usa medal won in rio, just like we protect the medals you've earned in life. liberty stands with you. >> anchor: devastating and deadly flooding in parts of losian ray and mississippi. take a look at this video. flood waters swallowed roads and houses forcing people into shelters at least two people have died. >> reporter: more than 1,000 people have been rescued from homes everybody is saying this is the worst they have ever seen. >> reporter: days of downpours forcing residents to take what belongings they could and travel through waste high waters to safer ground. my heart is broken because there are so many elderly people in here and people who can't afford to replace their things. it's like the water is literally up to their waist. that means their house and everything in there is destroye. >> anchor: emergency crews rescued more than 1,000 people from their cars and homes. help even came from complete strangers. i don't live here. i pulled over. down with me and saw some elderly and i said we need to help. me and my fiance say got out, pulled over and came to help. >> anchor: after declaring a state of america see louisiana's governor asked precedents to take all necessary precautions. asking everyone to simply evacuate if you are supposed to do that. if you are being advised to do that. stay off the road if you don't have to and if you are going to be on the road be extremely cautious. and families that have already evacuated are now forced shelters. question woke up, just water was all from the bed and everywhere. so we couldn't even get a chance to get nothing packed. we just had to call the fire department to come get us. >> anchor: more rain is still expected to fall in the area this weekend. >> anchor: next in the forecast some relief from the heat today but hopefully you didn't get too used to it. the heat is back tomorrow. heat advisories are in place and the forecast we'll get to detail coming up. david price perhaps not what the sox had bargained for of the staff ace owning some struggles so far and boston celtics swing and a miss. the ultimate prize in free agency still in position to make noise in the east. isaiah thomas telling us why >> reporter: we are pleased to wlvi have been reinstated to the direct tv lineup. we apologize for any inconvenience. >> anchor: now to the weather. it's been really cool out. i have been enjoying cool temperatures. a nice break definitely from what we saw yesterday, bri. boy, it was oppressive yesterda. >> anchor: refreshing relief, wasn't it? amazing the temperature gradient all on the same map. a high of 75 in beverly, 82 in boston earlier today. 90 degrees in orange, so you can see where those cooler relief but dent get too used to it. still having that relief, 24 hour temperature change it's 20 degrees cooler in boston than it was just 24 hours ago. now where we do have the superier air still in place it's where we have seen sort of a hot spot of these storms and areas of downpours rolling through just south of the mass pike, southern worcester county and we picked up some significant rain in some of those areas and inch to an inch and a half and some localized areas closer to two aerial flood advisory in effect for these areas you see located just not of the providence area, north of rhode island in southern worcester county so we'll be paying attention to the threat for storms as we head through the evening hours until about midnight tonight. you can see that activity still a hot spot in central new england as well as through upstate new york and there is a severe thunderstorm watch that's in effect through albany and into berkshire county as well. i think the stronger storms will be focused in western mass and this forecast model to be over done. those storms have been kind of dying out as they make it inside of 495. this does give you the idea that heading through the evening hours tonight if you have outdoor plans we still have to be weather aware. the threat for storms still with us until after midnight tonight and then we clear out for tomorrow morning. and then the heat comes back in a big way as well as the humidity. dew point sort of in check in the mid 60's and boston right now 62 in bedford. i mention again those storms favoring areas with the soupier play until overnight tonight pushing those temperatures back in and also pushing that humidity back in for us. we're probably at our lows right now and will continue to warm as we head into the overnight hours 70 to 76 tomorrow morning and then for tomorrow afternoon heat indexes once again triple digits for us. that's the real feel when you couple in the heat and also the humidity. highs tomorrow mid to upper 90's for us. so we're right back at it with that heat advisory in effect for much the area inside of 495 and we'll also be keeping an eye out for the potential for storms tomorrow although i am only giving it a 20 to 30% chance, isolated storm at best for us but some of them could prove to be strong potentially severe as well. heaviest or worse threats will be heavy rain through some strong and damaging wind gusts a look at the 7 on 7 forecast showing the humidity and heat staying with us until about midweek next week. >> anchor: thanks. a pleasant surprise while at the game last night. look at. this gonzalez and her friends were take a group photo when they realize they were photo bombed by big papi. you can see him walking behind him. he spot the group, decides he wants to take part in their picture, removes his helmet, liens in and gives a big smile for the camera. pretty cool picture i'm sure they will be hanging on to that one, tre. >> reporter: papi and the red sox snapping out of home runless draw drought in big way at fenway park. hanley ramirez the forefront of the power surge launching three home runned from night against the diamond backs, so could this be the statistic after hot streak? maybe so or maybe not. but certainly a good sign to see hanley showing off that power stroke considering the collision he survived thursday night at first base. ramirez coming up with a second two plus homer, only ted williams and jimmy fox have turned that trick in a sox uniform. ortiz said doesn't consider himself a slugger. you know when you call yourself not a home-grown hitter so thinking about hitting homers know what i'm saying? that's a tricky tribute. you have to go play tonight. you have to go play. i think there is no time to lay back right now. we have to keep going and you have to stay positive. you have a lot of guess around here that they love to play and we just have to >> anchor: it's been a work horse leading the american league with 163 and two-thirds inning pitch but that's not why the red sox gave david prize 217 million dollars when evaluating his performance in his first year in boston, the lefty is looking for quality as well as quantity. i got a four and a half right now and that's not what i envisioned. whenever i came here. i have had my fair share of really bad games, two or three inings or not magazining it the sixth so it helps to get those 7's and 8's but still have to throw the ball better. >> anchor: danny ainge missing out on kevin durant and could swing a deal for blake griffin but in the ice of isaiah thomas the celtic summer is just fine and the five nine point guard is a happy camper heading into the home stretch of the off season. thomas hooping it up with opponents a little closer to his size in reading in his annual kids basketball camp. it gushing about the celts edition of gerald green finding a sir silver lining about at least getting a seat at the table with kevin durant. that says something. that says the direction we're going in, even to be one of teams he met with it says a lot. i mean guys know, players know around the league that we are going continue a tough team. we have to continue to work and if it clicks we can make some noise. down in rio team u.s.a. still in command of the medal count holding down in third with 26 and the nationals granting jonathan papelbon his release. former sox closer is in the middle of his worst season as a pro sporting a 4-3-7 era and 37 appearances on the year. that's sports. >> anchor: a boston red sox fan making a splash. he caught a foul ball at fenway park and poured beer on his head to celebrate. take a look here. you can see him with the ball in his hand, smiling and yelling. then himself. >> anchor: it makes me wonder. you think he had a few of those before he poured that one on his head. >> anchor: i wouldn't want to spill a beer. >> anchor: that's like a $10 mistake. all right, 7 news at 0 clock introducing dunkin's new cold brew coffee, steeped slowly in cold water for small batches with an ultra-smooth, full-bodied flavor. america runs on dunkin'. 6:00. i am amaka u backa. >> anchor: i'm nick eons. we'll see you back at 7:00. the olympic zone starts at 7:30. here is a live look at the >> announcer: this is "nbc nightly news" with lester holt. reporting tonight from the olympic summer games in rio. >> good evening from rio. we'll get to all the olympic action here shortly, but first to the unfolding disaster happening right now in louisiana. unprecedented raining triggering what the governor is calling historic flooding. there have been hundreds of dramatic rescues and the region prepares for up to a foot more of rain. latest. >> reporter: in parts of the south, the devastation is unprecedented. it's unlike anything 96-year-old florence washington has ever seen. >> how are you doing, ma'am?
