following fast phone call that sounded like the real deal. >> i mean, i have never seen anything like it. it is unreal. report a massive police response on the boston university campus shortly after 8:00 this morning. >> nervous. very nervous. at the same time, it seems to be all too common. >> reporter: b.u. police received a call from a man with a foreign accent claiming he was in a booby-trapped room on the fourth floor of the libra avenue, telling police he already shot a hostage. >> a call came in someone shot. it is very alarming. and that is why, you know, you can see how serious we took it. >> reporter: tactical teams sealed off the area before sweeping all six floors of the building. then determining the call was a hoax. police say what's so unusual here is the caller stayed on the phone with the dispatcher for several minutes. >> the call did come to the b.u. police station. it was not a robo-call. it was an actual person >> reporter: frustrated police say they have no choice but to take threats like this seriously. >> it was very methodical. you can't take these hoaxes, you know, without checking them out thoroughly. >> reporter: why do you think someone would do something like this as a hoax? >> yes. it is horrifying. there is all kinds of things happening we have never seen before. we have friends who have been hassled on the street for their race in boston in the last few days. you never know. police have come and gone at this point. everything is back to normal on the b.u. campus this afternoon. we are told that police are busy reviewing that hoax call. it was recorded when it came in to police headquarters. now they are hoping to track down that man who made the call in the first place. we are live in boston this afternoon, steve cooper, 7 news. >> kris: thanks for the updating. we have more breaking news. a car crash in pembroke: on route 139. you can see the minivan has police are searching it right now. one man is in custody. he is expected to be arraigned on a variety of charges this afternoon. we have a crew there working to get some more information. we will have updates for you later this afternoon. a 72-year-old woman hit by a car in chelsea. police say the driver then took off. they are now looking for this white minivan. police say the woman was in a crosswalk when she was hit. she was rushed to the hospital with head injuries. but good news here. she is expected to be okay. also, track or the-trailer rolling over on route 24 southbound. of r morning. the ramp is still going to be closed for several hours which could lead to some traffic delays. >> christa: we want to take a live look outside on this friday afternoon. it was a chilly start out there. things are starting to warm up. isn't it nice to see the sun in sounds like things will change by the end of the weekend, though, right? >> that is exactly right. it is beautiful, it is wonderful. plenty of sunshine. more cloud cover across the cape. they are still dealing with some cloud cover in association with low pressure off the coast. really very comfortable conditions. fvns already 60 degrees in norwood. almost 60 in bed here. in boston, in the upper 50's. the cape is going to trend cooler throughout the day and breezier. for most of us, it is actually unbelievablely mild. as you head further northward, well, still looking at temperatures in the 60's. concord, plenty of sunshine. a beautiful forecast this friday. we have some cool weather headed our way very shortly. break. >> kris: also on 7 now: a teenager in some trouble. an 18-year-old called to court. and he is facing charges related to an attempted kidnapping. police say he approached a 14-year-old girl in bourne while she was walking to the bus. that is when they say he attacked her, knocking her down to the ground. we want to get out live to jennifer eagan who has the latest on the story. jen? >> reporter: kris, the defendant is the captain at upper case tech. he says his client is shocked 18-year-old john allen was placed in handcuffs inside the courtroom. prosecutors say on the morning of november 10, allen tackled a 14-year-old girl from behind, as she walked to her bus stop. he put his arm around her neck and applied pressure and attempted to pull the girl into his vehicle. prosecutors say a 13-year-old girl saw the attack, screamed and the attacker took off in his car. prosecutors also say the 13-year-old and other witnesses described a car in clothing that belonged to allen. they say a hair that appears to match one of the victim's sweatshirts. it is being analyzed at a crime lab right now. . >> she was unable to point out anyone in the array. >> his picture was there? >> i would assume it was, yes. it indicated that his picture was in the array. >> reporter: well, even storks judge granted the held next tutz. right now, allen is held without bail. >> christa: now a story you will see on just one station. another potential big break after police revealed they are searching for a dark s.u.v. in the murder of a jogger in princeton. investigators turning to technology and d.n.a. to help reveal the face of a killer. here is investigative reporter cheryl fiandaca. >> reporter: it has been more than three months since police found vanes in the woods of princeton. d.n.a. found at the scene hasn't matched anyone in any criminal database. 7 news has learned investigators are turning to new d.n.a. technology that could literally show them the killer's face. >> we focus on externally visible traits that we do... eye color, hair color, skin color, freckling. the shape of the face. also the person's >> reporter: using d.n.a. gathered at the crime scene, a virginia lab named power bond generates a composite sketch like this. sources tell 7 news they will use d.n.a. from the princeton scene to create a profile of the suspect. scientists there created a database with physical traits typically associated with specific genes. working with police, the company takes crime scene d.n.a. samples, runs them through their database, and is able to identify the outward person. and create a composite sketch with that information. >> it's been used by the federal government in many different respects over the last year or so. we know this has been vetted. we know the technology is solid. >> reporter: the hampton district attorney says his office was the first law enforcement agency in massachusetts to use the technology. >> it has led us in some new places. it has generated hundreds of tips from the public from all over the country. >> reporter: lisa ziegert's mother says this could be the break they have been looking for. >> it would mean that we were, all of us working on it together. we were able to bring justice for lisa. >> reporter: justice that vanessa marcotte's family is also hoping to get. now that investigators will have more information to new. some new place to start. they can go public with the information we give them. try to get new tips. or they can use it internally. and try to reinvigorate that investigation. >> reporter: there are limits, though, to the technology. so far, it is not possible to predict height and weight. the testing helps police eliminate suspects that don't fit the d.n.a. profile. in the control room, i'm cheryl fiandaca. >> weekend. will it bring us some wet >> christa: we will go to breaking news right now in manchester, new hampshire. sky 7 is over west high school. we understand it's being evacuated right now because of some sort of strange odor. you see the structure there. then as we pan over, you see the football field. it looks like the students faculty and staff have been evacuated over there. we will, of course, stay on top of this story and bring you the latest as we learn more. hopefully, there is a quick resolution to that. you see fire crews at the scene. >> kris: with the weekend on tap, hopefully, the sunshine we are feeling today sticks around. >> kris: that would be nice. >> reporter: you know, it would be nice. we will have some mild days here ahead very briefly. today and tomorrow. unfortunately, then we do have more seasonable weather and weather headed our way. get outside. enjoy today. this is one of the last days this year that we will be talking about 60-degree weather. that mild air does stick around into tomorrow. we will see cloud cover thicken up ahead of our next storm system. that brings us some wet weather into sunday. behind that system, we are talking about much cooler air working its way into new england. and you can see right now, we are pretty warm for most of us. close to 60 degrees in boston. across the cape, much cooler weather. actually, more cloud cover as well which is helping them stay moderate in the 60 degrees currently in norwood. still a beautiful day. we are seeing plenty of sunshine through most of the state. a couple of additional clouds across the cape. it is pretty windy there as well. we are not dealing with this today. we are dealing with this as we head into sunday. it is not going to be so snowy for us. this is the low pressure system that is bringing blizzard-like conditions to western minnesota as well as eastern south dakota. you can see a lot of this rain transitioning over to snow. we are not going to be looking at this sort of snow total. actually, a pretty interesting system. even some hail. some strong winds as well. for us, our main concern in the wind department is across the cape today. it's going to be gusty. winds, predominantly out of the north. and low pressure tracking further to our east. that is bringing some cloud cover across the cape as well. for us, very mild conditions. we are talking about high pressure carrying us through the end of the workweek here. even into saturday. system scoots out. we deal with the effects of this low pressure system that will increase cloud cover into saturday night. even bring some wet weather into saturday night as well. it isn't until sunday that we are dealing with most of this moisture. by sunday morning, we could see some flurries in far western massachusetts. the berkshires seeing. that we are dealing with rain through sunday. scattered showers likely. then into late sunday night, that is when i think we could have a couple of flurries fly. for the worcester hills as again, we are going to avoid some of the snow. >> we see anything, it is going to melt as soon as it hits the ground. much cooler air moves in as we head into the start of next week. that system pulls through. we see a major dip in the jet stream. temptures in the mid-40's by next week. back to you guys. >> kris: all right. still ahead, a disappearing diamond causing some concerns on the cape. a woman calls solve it 7 to draes case of a disappearing diamond on the cape. a woman handing in her mother's pendant. >> she went to a local jeweler. the problem is the jeweler lost the diamond. they did offer some compensation. it wasn't enough to make her happy. until she reached out to solve it 7. they say diamonds are a girl's best friend. just friends. >> it was special to me. the diamond and the pendant was my mother's diamond. >> kris: meredith's mother left her the diamond. she decided to make a change with the pendant. >> i had the pendant and the setting that i wanted the diamond put in. >> kris: meredith took the pendant and ring setting to i wanted to know how much. he called me with the price that night. >> kris: meredith agreed to have the work done. the price was right. when she went to pick up the ring two weeks later, they said the ring was misplaced. what was going through your mind? >> i didn't think too much of it. i thought, you know, it would be found. it got mixed up with something else. >> kris: meredith waited a week. think contacted the store. after several monan this letter from the store. offering her 2,500 cash or $, 500 in store credit. which she rejected. >> i felt the stone was worth more than that. >> kris: she tracked down an old appraisal from 1985. valuing the stone at $1,500 41 years ago. meredith gave that information to a local appraiser who put together this hypothetical appraisal for the ring. >> so i sent cape cod jewelers a letter. >> what did they say? >> i never heard from them. they never responded. >> kris: meredith called solve it 7. >> does a hypothetical appraisal carry any legal weight? >> i think it does. she is entitled to the fair market value. which bringing in some cloud cover to the cape here. that is going to be the situation throughout the day. also, much breezier across the cape. wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. it is not terribly breezy, authorities she had an argument with an intoxicated man who was in possession of a handgun. fvrbs swat teams surrounded the house. they helped the woman and her child get out safely. officials say the man shot at officers, though, hitting a police car. after several hours, the man surrendered and was taken into custody. >> kris: a suspected spelling the man is accused of robbing different banks in the area. he got his name for a certain reason. police say he has been handing out misspelled notes to tellers. victoria warren has more. >> reporter: surveillance pictures of a bank robbery. if you ask this suspect, he might tell you he is committing a bank robery. >> sthoos funny. remisspelled that. >> reporter: the spelling bee bandit, the f.b.i. calling him that after he misspelled the word robbery not once but four times. during four separate bank robberies notice last two weeks. in arlington, reading, burlington, fbs and peabody. he keeps leaving out one of the b's. . >> should have stayed in school. maybe he would have a good job. maybe he wouldn't have to steal. >> reporter: the f.b.i. wants to find this guy, all sarcasm aside. saying each robbery is getting more aggressive. he hit this td bank in peabody last sunday at 1:00 in the afternoon. >> ridiculous. i have never seen anything never heard of anything like that around here. >> the peabody police station. it is not far. there is plenty of cops in this area. >> kris: caught on camera mpl an arizona officer using excessive force, it seems when he punched this woman . investigators say that officer jeff bonar was at ma ris sa morris's house because of an eviction notice. she tried to kick him. morris says, though, she never touched the officer. >> why me? what did i do to deserve anything like that? upnot a bad person. like, why would he attack me? it is hurtful. it is embarrassing. the people who are supposed to protect us, they did not protect us. they ended up hurting me. >> kris: that officer has been placed on leave as the department investigates the arrest. the police chief calls the incident concerning. so-called fake news back in saying that stories like that can hurt democracy. >> christa: one man telling the "washington post" he has been duping americans for years. for millions of americans, facebook is much more than a powerful social media platform. it is where they get their news. the problem is fake news is shared more than ever. a buzz-feed analysis found that fake election news generated more buzz on facebook than stories from 19 combined. fake news is such big news that president obama weighed in on thursday. . >> there is so much active misinformation, and it is packaged very well and it looks the same when you see it on a facebook page or you turn on your television. >> christa: one of the most prolific writers is paul horner. he thinks his stories may have helped donald trump get elected. he told the "washington post" "nobody fact-checks anything anymore. that is how trump got that donald trump announced he was going to require muslims to wear badges. he thought, you know, surely no, one will think this story is true. it is absurd. in fact, people shared it. then he said, you know, well, i'm going to go one step further. >> christa: while horner says he hates trump and thought he was messing with the campaign. he also says that with every click, his fabricated stories made him money. horner claims about $10,000 a month. his career may be announced they will begin to prohibit ad sales from sites pushing out fake news. >> the real problem is with the fake news and what paul has been so successful in exploiting is this idea of confirmation bias. and you know, that people want to read and share news that conforms with beliefs, that they already have. >> christa: experts say some of the ways to tell whether or beyonding the headlines. google other sources to see if other outlets are reporting the same story. >> christa: more news today. a federal inspectsor has found now that that barrier in the gorilla exhibit was not up to current standards. this is the same enclosure that sparked a frantic rescue mission when this young boy jumped down inside the gorilla exhibit. it ened with that gorilla being killed. the zoo has since redesigned the older inefficient fence. >> christa: still ahead on 7: another honor for the our east over the atlantic. here is what is headed our way. as we head into the weekend. this low pressure system is packing a punch to the upper midwest. it is headed our way. that will bring us some moisture late saturday night into sunday. mostly just rain showers for us. we could be talking abo massachusetts. more on that in a moment. for today, we hold off on the wet weather. we welcome some sunshine. temperatures in the low 60's in norwood. close to 60 here in boston. much cooler across the cape. they have had the cloud cover which is moderated temperatures. they are quite breezy this we are looking at low pressure pushing into new england. this is going to bring the chance for some snow to new york. the chance for some flurries in western massachusetts. even by sunday morning. you can see most of us are really just looking at rain. which we've got here in green. the snow in blue. i do think the berkshires could see some of the snow. potentially, the worcester hills early in the morning. that is going to melt pretty quickly. you are not going to be looking at any sort of accumulation. then showers continue throughout sunday. late sunday night, we have anr flurries. especially in the merrimack valley. worcester hills. as well as far western massachusetts. far eastern massachusetts, you should be able to avoid some flurries. we do have the chance for some flurries mixed in there. again, accumulation next to nothing. it is going to melt as soon as that hits the ground. warm air pushes out, though, as we head into next week. here is parapartially why. after that uper-level low by sunday. we drop into the low 50's. that trend just continues as we head into next week. for today, very warm. one of the last days this year where i think we will be talking about 60-degree weather. hopefully, you can get outside and enjoy this mild weather. we stay mild into tonight. most of us will be in the low 40's. clear skies. and winds relatively light. we will see some students are make it work. today all three of you are the class-a veronica lewis, morgan johnson, ariel kim live in the haverhill area. they founded the group value for all over a year ago. it is a spanish-english club where students play games, make friends, and learn from each other. >> we have made so many new friends. i have learned so much in spanish. my conversational skills have advanced so far. it is like we are not even volunteering. we are both getting something while it is carele-freef and spontaneous now, the founders say it wasn't like that at first. >> it is kind of awkward sometimes. >> it was a little bit tricky. we didn't really know people. and i could tell from them that they were a little builter in jous. ... nervous. >> christa: their determination paid off. >> they wanted to learn more about us. that makes me feel like they care about spanish. >> we talk english. they talk spanish. they help us. >> we are confident in learning because they don't judge us. some plans to make these kids available to other students around the country so they can set up their own clubs. >> kris: we need some of those kits. we have been trying to use an app to learn spanish be the 45th president. for oddsmakers, it is never too early to go ahead and look ahead to the next election. talking about 2020. >> kris: did he ever pop into your mind? >> christa: absolutely not. >> kris: a big-name boston celebrity is on the list. nancy chen has more on the potential run. well, actually, nancy is not here. we the 45th president might be decided, of course, with donald trump.
