zone. five people are dead, after two serious crashes just three miles apart in will county. on northbound i-55, a semi rear- ended a car that was stopped near a construction zone near channahon. the car was pushed into two other cars... and four women died. they've been identified as kimberly and piper britton of urbana... vicky palacios of coal city... and ulrike blopleh of channahon. police say, driver francisco espinal, of leesburg, indiana, admitted he had been driving for more consecutive hours than the law allows. >> the truck may have been driving at a speed beyond the posted zone of 55 mi. per hour. >>a few miles to the north, a pair of semis collided on highway 6 near elwood. one of the drivers, 41-year-old deividas mockus of darien, was killed in the crash. the truck crashed back into the other track. >>an afternoon on a lake turned tragic when one of a group of teenagers swimming off a boat disappeared under the water. friends tell wgn that matthew reed, an incoming junior at grayslake central high school drowned in third lake. he was among the group that jumped off a pontoon boat around four o'clock yesterday. his body was found by divers using sonar four hours later, 60 feet under water. news of the emergency spread quickly through the surrounding neighborhood. >> one of the neighbors who was on my door asking me where my kids were. i said the right here. then i heard all the sirens and the lights were on. for the way i knew something was wrong. i found out it was one of the kids. had some friends over. it was very painful. >>third lake is one of the deepest in the chain o lakes. the lake county coroner is expected to officially identify the victim today. secretary of state john kerry is in cairo, trying to bring about an end to the fighting between israel and hamas. the latest victim was a palestinian man, killed in an israeli airstrike in gaza. two israeli shells hit hospitals that were being used to store hamas weapons. the official palestinian death toll in the past two weeks rose to 537... many of them, children who were being used a human shields. 25 israeli soldiers have been killed in the fighting. u.n. secretary general ban ki- moon flies to israel today, to meet with leaders of both sides. pro-russian rebels in the ukraine have turned over the black box recorders from the crash of malasyia airlines flight 17. but they won't answer all the questions about the apparent missile strike that downed the airliner. andrew spencer reports. >> investigators will analyze the flight recorders to get a better idea of what happened to the plane. probe russian rebels gave the recorders to malaysian officials on tuesday, days after the crash that killed nearly 300. as to whether they may have been tampered with, experts say that is highly unlikely. >> he can't go in and fool around with the data and moved points around. if there was any kind of attempt to alter them, investigators and would know immediately. >> if >>chicago police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead on the city's far north side. it happened just before ten last night in the 52-hundred block of north kenmore avenue. that's in the edgewater neighborhood. investigators say the unidentified man was shot once in the chest as he he stood on the sidewalk. he was taken to illinois masonic hospital, where he later died. no arrests have been made. after another violent weekend in the city, mayor emanuel met with top community leaders and federal law enforcement officials yesterday to discuss what needs to be done to reduce the violence. about forty people discussed a variety of issues and solutions to cut crime and improve the way of life across the city. some of the suggestions included more programs for at- risk youths, tougher gun laws and improved communication from police. >> i am proud that we have more public safety resources because that's a part of this. but we have to double up our resources in investing in our communities so that the committee on a trajectory of finding a job because that job will give skills and hope for a ticket to the middle class. >> mccarthy also addressed the shooting death of 11-year-old shamiya adams. he said investigators have "very good leads" and the case is developing quickly. but no arrests have been made. hundreds of bikers and police officers gathered at a south side police station last night to remember an officer killed in a motorcycle crash sunday. they paid their respects to officer tito rodriguez at the 6th district police station at 78th and halsted. rodriguez had been on the police force just over a year. he was off-duty at the time of the accident. police say he was entering the dan ryan when he was cut off by another driver. that driver has been ticketed in the crash. city hall is getting some serious blowback, after a strange spike in tickets from chicago's red light cameras. faulty equipment and human tampering are being blamed, after certain cameras went on a ticketing spree in 2012... then abruptly stopped it. some city aldermen want the city's inspector general to conduct a full audit of the red light camera program. more than 13 thousand people could end up getting refunds for their 100-dollar tickets. a new plan to help boost income for chicago cabbies was unveiled last night. the "united taxi drivers community council" is offering a ten point plan to raise fares and fees. among the points: the charge per mile would jump from 1-80 to 2-40. a 20-cent waiting fee will be charged every 24 seconds--down from every 36 seconds. and you would have to pay more for extra passengers. cabbies have been waiting nine years for a fare increase. and you would have to pay more for those extra passengers. they say the third time is the charm.. and for the new baby orangutan at brookfield zoo... it's new home may be the right fit.. 6-month old kecil arrived last month to bond with maggie... a 53-year-old orangatan.. so far.. as her parenting skills are showing up to be a perfect match.. kecil was born at the toldeo zoo in january.. but after a difficult delivery, her mother showed little interest.. the baby was then taken to the milwaukee county zoo.. but wasn't receive enough t-l-c there either. if all things go as planned, the public will meet kecil at the brookfield zoo in early 20- 15. >> that is pretty cute. a south korean passenger ferry capsized, killing almost 300 people, the owner of the ferry company has been found dead. since the april disaster, billionaire yoo byung-un had been a fugitive. but now, d-n-a and fingerprint testing has confirmed that a body, found in the south of the country last month, is that of yoo. investigators say, embezzlement and tax evasion may have factored into the ferry disaster. it's not clear whether yoo committed suicide. johns hopkins hospital in baltimore has agreed to pay 190 million dollars to victims of a doctor who secretly took photos and videos of thousands of patients during pelvic exams. gynecologist nikita levy was fired last year after a colleague suspected he was wearing a spy camera that looked like a pen around his neck. levy confessed and police found naked patient pictures and videos on his home computer. he committed suicide soon after the confession. levy had worked at the hospital for 25 years. a 100-year-old man in maine has a birthday wish come true as he gets to take a ride in a big rig. it took a little help, but thomas follette got back in the cab of a semi yesterday -- something he's been wanting to do for more than number of hours acceptable when traveling on the road. also cited for speeding. he has been identified as 51 year-old from leesburg, indiana he is due in bond court this morning. we've also learned the names of the four women who were killed in that crash. the county coroner identified them. the cars they were in and were crushed beyond recognition. just after 2:00 p.m. yesterday on northbound i 55 when state police say semi truck driven into three cars and another semi doorstop on the highway as traffic was emerging from three lanes into one in the construction zone at the bridge. >> the three vehicles that were struck by the truck were stopped in traffic along with other vehicles and the truck driver at the rear was passing other vehicles in the left lane and abruptly made a lane change to the right and struck the rear of the vehicles pushing them together. >> besides the four women killed, four others were injured. they were listed in serious condition at area hospitals. the driver of the truck did undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing but this morning he is only charged with falsifying his log book. something police say he admits to doing. he is due in bond court palestinian and american kids together, to help them all understand one another. the "hands of peace" program aims to give kids a better grasp of each other's culture and religion... and in the friends. his friends tell wgn news matthew reed had jumped off a pontoon boat in third lake about four o'clock yesterday afternoon. mayor emanuel and community leaders say they are encouraged after from tsarnaev's college dorm room, including a backpack containing fireworks, a jar of vaseline and a thumb drive. the white house says, the exodus of young illegal immigrants across america's mexican border is starting to slow down -- from 350 kids a day, to 150. still, texas governor rick perry is deploying a thousand national guardsmen to help secure the border. the guardsmen won't target the children. instead, they'll try to prevent drug traffickers and other criminals from exploiting the border crisis to sneak into texas. >> all the texans who have fallen back them to the crime at hand of these criminal aliens will attest to the price of an action that is too high for texans to pay period >>for now, texas will have to pay the cost of sending the guardsmen to the border. but the state may bill the *federal government for the cost later. the white house denying reports that the obamas are buying a mansion in southern california. several realtors in california have told the los angeles times that the first family is in the process of buying an 8-thousand square foot home in rancho mirage - an area that's called "the playground of presidents." the seven bedroom, seven and a half bath house is listed for four and a quarter million dollars. speculation over the deal soared after the president and first lady spent a long weekend there over the father's day weekend. the obamas still own their home in chicago's kenwood neighborhood. the royal family plans a low-key celebration for prince george's first birthday. these new pictures were released just in time for his first birthday. they were taken a few weeks ago. the family will celebrate with a small party at kensington palace. the queen is expected to attend but prince charles is out of town. the message was
