yesterday's high only 70 degrees. another cold day today. sunshine today high temperature near 70 degrees. typically we are in the '80s. we are nowhere near that today. it's 54 in bartlett. the overnight - a garage fire in south suburban steger spread to two homes and killed two dogs. it started at about midnight near 30th street and morgan. firefighters arrived on scene to find a garage engulfed in flames and it quickly spread to the home. the flames were so intense, they burned the outside of the home next door. >> we did have a good-sized gap to do with we have to cut through to get to the garage. we started with the exposures that western working on the primary scene of the fire. to animals did pass away and the fire. >>a woman who lived in the neighboring home had trouble breathing and was taken to the hospital for treatment. the cause of the fire is under investigation. major computers problems forced people to wait for hours to buy a new city sticker just hours before the midnight deadline. now that deadline has been pushed back a day. tonya francisco is *live on the northwest side with the details. of the getting a break? >> a bit of a break. this is the first time people are actually cheering computer problems because it's giving the procrastinators or maybe people who may have forgotten, another 24 hours to get that city sticker. there were long lines at courtesy exchanges across the city for several hours last night thanks to computer problems. i should say computer network issues. the problem was only a currency exchanges unless the close to three hours to take between six and 8:30 p.m. people were not able to purchase their stickers in a timely matter. there were reports of some people have to wait anywhere from 20 minutes-one hour. those that were not able to get one were on the edge worrying about having to pay a litchi or even worse, getting hit with a $200 ticket from the city. then came word from the city's courts office that the greece. was been extended another 24 hours. >> the system was slow to the point where it seemed like it was down and when we were not able to serve people they decided the best course of after a proposed cease- fire with hamas collapsed, israel resumed airstrikes against hamas targets in gaza. and already, at least seven more palestinians have been killed in those strikes. one strike destroyed the home of a top hamas political leader. prime minister benjamin netanyahu says the militant group will suffer for its decision not to halt its rocket fire into israel. at least 150 palestinian rockets have been launched at israel since yesterday... most were intercepted in mid-air. a federal prosecutor wants republican lawmakers to hold off on investigating governor quinn's anti-violence program. the legislative audit commission has a hearing today on the "neighborhood recovery initiative." republicans say it was a 54- million dollar political stunt that quinn used to get re- elected four years ago. u-s attorney james lewis says he wants state lawmakers to wait 90-days, so that their hearing doesn't interfere with the ongoing federal investigation. so far the state panel plans to continue with today's hearing. the chicago mayor's race is starting to come into sharper focus, now that a potential candidate has chosen not to run. cook county board president toni preckwinkle said she'll stick to running the county, despite a poll that gave her a 24-percent lead over mayor emanuel. >> ironically the sun times poll at the beginning of the week it clear to me that i was good to have a hard time in the next few months if i didn't make a strong statement about my abstention. >>that same poll gives chicago teachers union president karen lewis a *smaller lead overlewis is in the earliest stages of exploring a run for mayor. alderman bob fioretti is also considering a candidacy. at present, only two lesser- known candidates have officially declared. once again, richard daley's lawyers have asked a judge not to force the former mayor to testify in the millennium park grill trial. mayor emanuel is suing the park grill... claiming daley cut a sweetheart deal with his political supporters... and the lease for the grill is costing taxpayers millions of dollars. but daley's lawyers argue that testifying could pose a health hazard for their client. when the judge asked, "what hazard?"... the attorney said daley's health records are confidential. a man in northwest suburban woodstock is charged with sexually abusing a boy he met at a water park. prosecutors say taylor blaul was seen touching the boy in an inappropriate manner at the woodstock water works on july tenth. he was arrested yesterday and is due in bond court today. he's charged with four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. a man is charged with spitting on, and then slapping, a cook county judge. david nicosia is being held on bail for aggravated battery and a hate crime. cook county prosecutors say nicosia got angry when an african american judge was smoking near him, outside the daley center monday. prosecutors say the two were arguing when nicosia said "rosa parks, move" and spat in her face. they say he also slapped her before he was arrested. ten children face possible arson charges for setting fires in southwest suburban plainfield. the children's ages range from eleven to 16. right now they're charged with property damage for setting fire to dumpsters and playground mulch. three incidents happened in june, and another happened last thursday. police say some of the juveniles admitted to setting the fires after seeing pictures of other incidents on social media. the cook county sheriff released a photo of the room where a man was trapped for more than 30 hours inside the county jail, before anyone found him. farad polk was there to see his son over the fourth of july weekend, when he was given directions to the visiting area.instead, he walked into this 8-by-8 room that's not used on the weekends ... and the door closed behind him. polk didn't have any food or water, and slept on the concrete floor. he was rescued by the chicago fire department 32 hours later, after he broke a sprinkler head. polk is now suing the county for emotional trauma. a public hearing was held to address a decline in minority student enrollment at elite c-p- s high schools, especially on the north side. the city council's education and child development committee claims that the numbers dropped after 2009, when a federal court lifted a decree that required top-tier schools be no more than 35-percent white. but, a sun-times report found that white admissions have increased at walter payton, jones, northside and whitney young college preps. c-p-s says that's not true, that minority enrollment at all ten selective high schools is up. one alderman said families on the south and west sides don't always know they can apply to selective enrollment schools on the north side. we have tended and they're all intertwined. but look at the opportunities we don't simply work at these four schools in isolation did not recognize the fantastic opportunity in the other schools, we have to talk about them as a whole, all 10 years together. >>the foundation overseeing the development and building of the obama presidential library says it's raised mug shot guy coming up.nigerian authorities e they have caught one of the men responsible for a bus station bombing that killed 71 people. aminu ogwuche is a member of the islamist militant group boko haram. the leader of that group claimed responsibility for the april 14-th bombing. the group has also targeted politicians, schools, churches and mosques. as for ogwuche, he was picked up in syria, and extradited back to nigeria to face trial. protests over the border crisis are spreading. people on both sides of the issue staged a heated demonstration in oracle, arizona. the town, near tucson, is the latest to receive dozens of children from central america who crossed the border illegally. the children are being housed at a youth services facility there, until they can be processed. the county sheriff, who has spoken out against illegal immigration and in favor of stepped up security at the border, was critical of the process. he says federal officials did not give him any >>senate republicans are pushing a proposal that would allow most minors who have crossed the border illegally, to be quickly deported. but, democrats do not seem to support the plan. a man arrested they try to beat that deadline to buy the sticker and avoid the leafy. and the possibility of the ticket from the city. the city post office blames the delay on computer network issues and currency exchanges because the delays to a point where some people end up not being able to get a sticker at all. >> earlier i went to another place and said the system was down. waited for a long time and then as soon as they get it up to the window the guy at the counter says the system is down. >> it's been sporadic meaning it takes about 30 minutes to make one sticker sometimes 20, sometimes 10. no rhyme or reason why. >> he owns the currency exchange and says he also saw this problem on june 30th and july 1st. that was the actual expiration date of the city slicker. but the traditional to week grace period now there's an extra 24 hours to get that city sticker and avoid the leafy. at midnight tonight is the new deadline. i would not count on it being extended beyond midnight. >> cardinal george is reaching out to the children who crossed the border illegally, and are now being housed in chicago. george told the sun-times that the archdiocese of chicago has asked the federal government for permission to feed the 429 minors who are already here. he also wants to provide housing to others who have come to the u-s, to escape dangerous conditions in central america. more than 57-thousand unaccompanied minors have crossed the border illegally since october. the white house claims one of the president's advisers is immune from testifying at a house hearing. david simas is the director of the white house office of political strategy and outreach. simas his office is being investigated for violating a law that forbids federal employees from engaging in political activity. a house committee subpoenaed simas to testify today, but the white house says he is immune from testifying about his official duties. but committee chairman, congressman darrel issa, says explain the dangers of the drug. they say a lot of people experiment with it, not realizing just one time is all it takes to become addicted. they specifically spoke to teens. we see the statistics and they are frightening as early as grade school, even in junior high we are seeing children that are trying drugs or they are under age drinking. it puts them on behalf of poor decision making and we know the end result unfortunately is something our children don't know. >>there were six heroin overdose deaths in orland park last year. illinois lawmakers have finalized the state's rules for regulating medical marijuana. the state will decide who may grow and sell pot legally. as many as ten thousand people in the state say they could benefit from marijuana's painkilling properties. >> everything proceeds according to schedule, the first illinois pot farms and dispensaries may be operating by next spring. google is teaming up with swiss drugmaker novartis to create smart contact lenses which can track blood sugar levels. the contacts would measure glucose in tear fluid, then send the information to a wireless mobile device. it would potentially eliminate the need for finger
