>> phenomenal. he's a great leader and a great athlete. he kind of gives a sense of confidence to other swimmers so when i'm around him i feel stronger and stand a little bit taller. feel a little bit more confident. >> can we go back to that medal ceremony one more time in the control room. people ask us all the time, ryan, why do we love covering the olympics. can i tell you, your face during that ceremony, that's why we love covering the olympics. competing for his or her country and being able to let out that kind of emotion. it's so great. congratulations. >> we love you. thank you. can i just touch the gold. >> be careful. she has grease on her hand from the conga guy. >> congratulations. that was really awesome. >> where are you from? >> venus lost her singles match over the weekend and didn't play well. serena struggled in her singles match yesterday. venus kept going in tennis. she said she wanted to be here. got her. disappointing for them. novak djokovic also lost yesterday. a lot of quality in there. >> by the way, we have the body no gold medal. coming up, we'll take a closer look at that impressive debut for the women's gymnastics team and you can catch nbc's prime time coverage with phelps, ledecky and missy franklin all in action tonight at 7:00, 6:00 central here on nbc. let's go back to savannah in new york. breaking news that will cause problems at airports all day long. delta is dealing with a computer outage this morning that forced the airline to ground flights gutierrez at hartsfield jackson international in atlanta. good morning. >> reporter: this has been a big travel mess throughout the night. long lines at hartsfield but within the last few minutes, the check in kiosks have been back up and running so now some of these lines have thinned out. the main problem here is the check in area. luckily security lines are still going just fine. check in passengers. we have live pictures from the lines over at dfw and reagan in d.c. this all started over night with the worldwide outage causing problems from rome to l.a.x. delta has not said what caused the problem or how long it would take to get fixed but at hartsfield they say flights are delayed until 7:30 a.m. eastern time and we heard that from several airports. delta statement urging all passengers to check the status of their flights while the issue is being assessed. as you mentioned, this could cause ripple effects throughout the day for delta passengers. best advice, check your flight before you head to the airport and give yourself enough time. savannah? >> yes. >> when you were standing there watching your teammate tap that wall and you watch number one pop up, tell us what went through you at that moment. >> initial moment was i was exhausted. my legs were killing me. my body was in so much pain the split second afterwards it was, like, yes, gold medal. we finally won. we brought gold medal back to team usa. >> french won this event in the last two olympic games. team usa really wanted this. y then i want to take you to the medal ceremony, ryan. they start to play the national anthem and the flag goes up and for all of the right reasons, >> yeah. i don't know. i've heard the national anthem plenty of times before and i've received awards before as they played the national anthem but this was different. just the emotions kind of manifested themselves on the podium and the tears started rolling. >> how did it feel knowing that not only were you doing something amazing for this wonderful relay team, for michael phelps, he got number 18 thanks to a you guys. how did that feel? >> phenomenal. he's a great leader and a great athlete. he kind of gives a sense of confidence to other swimmers so when i'm around him i feel stronger and stand a little bit taller. feel a little bit more confident. >> can we go back to that medal ceremony one more time in the control room. people ask us all the time, ryan, why do we love covering the olympics. can i tell you, your face during that ceremony, that's why we love covering the olympics. competing for his or her country and being able to let out that kind of emotion. it's so great. congratulations. >> we love you. thank you. can i just touch the gold. >> be careful. she has grease on her hand from the conga guy. >> congratulations. that was really awesome. >> where are you from? >> venus lost her singles match over the weekend and didn't play well. serena struggled in her singles match yesterday. venus kept going in tennis. she said she wanted to be here. got her. disappointing for them. novak djokovic also lost yesterday. a lot of quality in there. >> by the way, we have the body no gold medal. coming up, we'll take a closer look at that impressive debut for the women's gymnastics team and you can catch nbc's prime time coverage with phelps, ledecky and missy franklin all in action tonight at 7:00, 6:00 central here on nbc. let's go back to savannah in new york. breaking news that will cause problems at airports all day long. delta is dealing with a computer outage this morning that forced the airline to ground flights gutierrez at hartsfield jackson international in atlanta. good morning. >> reporter: this has been a big travel mess throughout the night. long lines at hartsfield but within the last few minutes, the check in kiosks have been back up and running so now some of these lines have thinned out. the main problem here is the check in area. luckily security lines are still going just fine. check in passengers. we have live pictures from the lines over at dfw and reagan in d.c. this all started over night with the worldwide outage causing problems from rome to l.a.x. delta has not said what caused the problem or how long it would take to get fixed but at hartsfield they say flights are delayed until 7:30 a.m. eastern time and we heard that from several airports. delta statement urging all passengers to check the status of their flights while the issue is being assessed. as you mentioned, this could cause ripple effects throughout the day for delta passengers. best advice, check your flight before you head to the airport and give yourself enough time. savannah? >> i was at the point in my life where something needed to change and i needed to figure things out. >> phelps says he figured those things out and now it's back to the pool. how is training going now? what's the difference? >> i want to be here. that's the difference. i had no desire to go to workout before. i want to retire how i want to retire. and i have a great i haven't trained like this in decades. >> and the results are speaking for themselves. >> phelps now has the lead for the americans. >> looking again like the most dominant swimmer in olympic history as his mother, fiance, and son, boomer, cheer him on. and like the rest of us, waiting to see the limits of michael so we know what he's done so far. let's take a look at the rest of his program for this week. here's what happens. he'll be back at the pool today for preliminaries of the 200 meter butterfly. the finals for that are tomorrow night. on thursday, the duel in the pool as he faces off against ryan lochte and friday he swims in 100 meter butterfly and on satu h butterfly leg of the 4x100 meter medley relay. a lot coming up. up next, what's with those round bruises we're seeing on phelps and other olympic athletes?
