Reporter a walk along the water at Riverside Park and 72nd street turned into a frightening one for ross kennedy and his friend. It was pretty scary. Reporter kennedy says two teens on a bench started talking to them, then they suddenly showed knives on their waistbands and demanded their wallets and cell phones from their pockets, but the robbery didnt stop here. The criminals stayed in contact with the victims for longer than most holdups. The entire time while it was going on, i just i was just waiting for it to be over. Reporter he tells us the crooks made sure the iphones couldnt be trace. They force the victims to delete the app called find my iphone and turn off their icloud settings. That way kennedy and his friend couldnt log into their accounts from another device and find the phones exact location. Its an app people commonly use if their phones are lost or ripped off. Now police are investigating exactly what caused this crash. Cbs 2s Janelle Burrell joins us live from the scene with more this morning. Janelle. Reporter and good morning to you, chris and mary. Behind by this car here on watchon avenue. Police were able to pull the car out with a tow truck here overnight, but you can see all of the glass and debris shattered here across the sidewalk. This happened about 10 00 last night at the intersection of watchong and east second street, witnesses recording some cell phone video showing the car soon after it crashed into the front of this Jackson Hewitt tax service storefront. Again, at this point its not clear what caused the crash, but witnesses do tell us that the driver was taken away in an ambulance, though its not clear what injuries that driver may have sustained. Were told about three families lived in the apartments above this big here at 200 watchong, about 20 people were displaced, evacuate because authorities at this point do not know if the building is structural sound is. The alleged Corruption Scandal swirling around mayor bill de blasio has now directly hit city hall. His attorney mia wiley confirms, quote, city hall has been subpoenaed by the New York County District Attorneys Office and the u. S. Attorneys office for the southern district, and we are fully cooperating with the investigation. The mayor has not been personally served. The investigation focuses on the mayors fundraising and how he raised money to unseat state Senate Republicans in order to further his political agenda. Cara and manhattan d. A. Sier russ vance want to know if de blasio violated the law by sish couple venting laws and specifically marking money for candidates which is not allowed. Theyre also looking into whether promises were made in exchange for donations. The mayor has defended his actions, saying everything theyve done is legal and appropriate. He said this on monday. Reporter cbs 2 has learned members of de blasios inner circle who were subpoenaed include emma wolf, a top political adviser and the citys director of Intergovernmental Affairs, top fundraiser Ross Offinger and the Consulting Firm berlin rosen which works on the mayors political campaigns. Now, being subpoenaed means these people can be questioned and must preserve documents. De blasios spokesperson specifically described emma regarded Public Servant whose integrity should not be question. In july of 2014 he allegedly step on the head of jhamele cuffy in bedstuy. Cuffy had allegedly resisted arrest but officer swers Attorney Says after trying to subdue the suspect, he brought the boot down on the victims hand, not his head. As he kicked me in the head, my head hit the concrete. Edwards attorney disputed the photos of the suspects head taken the day after the arrest. A Young Brooklyn mother disappeared more than a week ago now her mother says enough is not being done to find her. Dawson left her bedstuy home april 20th to go to dinner. Sources tell cbs news he had prescription painkillers in his possession and at his home when he died. Prince was found unresponsive in an elevator at his compound outside of minneapolis last thursday. Its not clear yet if the medications played a role in princes death. Results are not expected for weeks. In the meantime, federal drug investigators are looking for the source of those pain medications. Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert is heading to prison. Says she was busy working inside her Marshall Creek spice store when all the activity drew her an her sister ouz there were five ambulances here, cop cars, hero units, you know, the guys with the bullet proof vests, they took each person out. Reporter one Person Police say was the retired nypd officer. He seemd to look okay. Reporter police say the retired officer was struck in his thigh. In oceanside, long island, a growing number of complaints in williamsburg about a bicycle grave yard. The bikes are creating an eye sop store on north seventh. The owners say the people who abandoned the bikes are responsible for removing them. Witnesses record some cell phone video showing the car soon after it crashed into the storefront at 200 watchong at the intersection of east second street. Witnesses telling us that the driver was rushed away in an ambulance, though its not clear how badly he or she may have been injured. Were told three families lived above this big, so about 20 people were displaced this morning. They are being helped by the red cross, but at this point its not clear what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. At this point all of that under investigation. Investigators say the car stall on the tracks. The driver and a passenger were able to escape safely. The driver was issued a summons for illegally blocking a Railroad Crossing. No one was hurt in the crash. New this morning, Police Released images of a man they say rob a taxi driver at knifepoint in midtown manhattan. It happened sunday, april 3rd around 4 30 in the morning. Police say the man was seated in the cabs passenger seat and when the cab stopped at a red light, he put a knife tot drivers hip and demanded money. He got away with around 300 in cash and the drivers iphone. It happened near the corner of fifth avenue and 42nd street. Former fugitive heir robert durst has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term on a weapons charge. Ordered him to serve seven years and a month in prison. Durst accepted the sentence in february as part of a plea deal. He was also fined 5,000. The real estate heir still faces a murder charge in california where hes accused of killing a female friend in 2000. The durst family runs 1 world trade center. Reporter yeah, chris, multiple families out of their homes this morning, and a lot of people actually showing up for work, people who work in this office building, only to find out they will obviously not be working out of this location here this morning. This all happening around 10 00 last night at the intersection of watchong avenue and east second street. And you can see all of the debris that was left by the car crashing into this building. Witnesses reporting some cell phone recording some cell phone video where you can actually see the car moments after it crashed into this storefront. At this point, though, police have not released why they believe the driver lost control of the vehicle, but witnesses do say that they saw the driver rushed away in an ambulance, though its not clear the extent of their injuries. Three families were told lived in the apartments above the crash site here, so about 20 people were displaced. They were evacuated because not know the Structural Integrity of this building. A judge is deciding the fate of a Police Officer accused of stomping on a mans head after the cop and his alleged victim face off in court. Officer joel edward faces assault charges. In july of 2014, he allegedly stepped on the head of jameal cuffy in bedstuy. Cuffy had allegedly resipsed the officer, but officer edwards attorney said after trying to subdue the suspect he brought his boot down on the victims hand, not his head. A 43yearold man was getting into his parked car yesterday when he was struck and killed by a pickup truck. The truck then hit another car about a block away. A jetblue pilot is free on 50,000 bond this morning after being accused of flying drunk. Dennis murphy, jr. Of ramsey, new jersey was in Brooklyn Federal court yesterday. He was charged with flying unthe influence on a flight from orlando to Kennedy Airport last year. After the plane landed, murphy was picked for a random alcohol test. He was over the legal limit. Murphy did not want to speak to cbs 2s alice gaynor. Reporter were you drinking on the plane . No comment. Murphy claims the test results must have been caused by the gum he was chewing. His copilot told investigators murphy was drinking an unknown murphy faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. Well, the attorney for a long island man accused of threatening employee employees with a cross bow says his employees never intended to follow through. Harold geretsky has been fighting with neighbors and local officials since last summer when he said he couldnt afford to park his plane at the airport. Investigators say this week he threatened the town of hempsted employees for dismantling his plane while he was away. His Attorney Says hes harmless. Hes an angry old man. He called up, he made a threat. Hes not going to carry it out. Gretskys attorney said he wouldnt say if his client even owns a cross bow. He now faces charges of aggravated harassment. 6 38. New york state officials are sounding the alarm about a new email scam targeting people who dont have chip cards. The fraudulent emails contain a link to sign up for your new card, but clicking on it could install malware on your computer. The software gives scammers access to all of your personal information, leaving you open to identity fraud. Reporter a walk along the water at Riverside Park and 72nd street turned into a frightening one for ross kennedy an his friend. It was pretty scary. Reporter kennedy says two teens on a bench started talking to them, then they suddenly showed knives on their waistbands and demanded their wallets and cell phones from their pockets. But the robbery didnt stop here. The criminals stayed in contact with the victims for longer than most holdups. The entire time it was going on, i was just waiting for it to be over. Reporter he tells us the crooks made sure the iphones they were about to steal couldnt be traced. They forced the victims to delete the app called find my iphone and turn off their icloud settings. That way kennedy and his friend couldnt log into their accounts from another device and find the phones exact location. Its an app people commonly use if their phones are lost or ripped off. Kennedy says the thieves also made them hit reset on their phones and wipe them clean for possible resale. So they basically got a bran new phone . Yeah, pretty much. He used a strangers phone to call 911 that canceled the line with then canceled the line with his Service Provider and had to shell out a few hundred dollars for a new iphone. Other iphone users in the area now concerns about their phone getting stolen this way. Iphones are ridiculously expensive. Reporter police tell us this is definitely a new tactic that crooks are using an they havent dealt with many of these cases, but they say if this happens to you, dont fight back it feels like a violation.
