randolph holder late last night. >> 33 years of age, badge number 13340, a five-year veteran of the new york city police department was killed in the line of duty, murdered. >> reporter: gunned down the commissioner says as officer holder and other officers responded to a of shots fired around 78:30 p.m. >> we are working here and next thing you know, you hear several shots. and the cops were here in seconds. >> reporter: witnesses told police they saw several men running from the scene toward the fdr drive. and a male victim telling officers that one of the men had stolen his bike at gun point. and officers from the anti- crime unit spotted the suspect with the bike, chasing him over the 120th street and the fdr drive and then shots erupted. >> an exchange of gunfire between the male suspect and the two officers. during this exchange, officer holder was struck in the head. >> reporter: investigators say the suspect continued running north along the fdr promenade, eventually arrested. police took three other men into custody nearby as officer holder was rushed to harlem hospital where he died just before 10:30 p.m. >> if there are witnesses that might help us on this, we would ask that they contact us and provide this information. >> reporter: now as for the suspect in this case, he is expected to be released from the hospital later today and charged. reporting live morning, the fdr drive is currently closed between 96th street and the rfk bridge. and also the onramps from the fdr to the bridge are shut down. and as well as the ramps at 49th and 63rd street. all of this information has been placed on our facebook page. go there to look at that. and bronx bound willis avenue bridge is closed as well. and this is due to construction until about 6:00 this breaking news. last night's killing of a new york city police officer randolph holder. >> we are live from the officer's precinct in east harlem. scott -- >> reporter: good morning. yeah, heart ache and sorrow here at officer holder's precinct where he is being remembered as a dedicated cop. >> he is 33 years of age, unmarried. his family is here. >> reporter: a somber police commissioner bill bratton delivering the tragic news of holder, a five-year veteran of the nypd, a third generation cop who immigrated here and followed the family legacy. >> his father was a police officer and his grandfather was also a police officer. >> reporter: early this morning, in a touching heart wrenching moment, a procession of officers saluting the slain cop as his body was removed from the hospital, a recognition of his character and bravery. >> we're humbled by officer randolph holder's example, an example of service and courage and sacrifice. >> and tonight did what every other officer in the nypd does when the call comes, he ran toward danger. it was the last time he would respond to a call. >> reporter: officer holder is the fourth nypd officer killed in the line of duty in less than a year. back in december, two officers gunman in brooklyn. and in may, officer brian moore was killed after questioning a man in queens. >> new york city police officers every day go out and carry themselves like superheros on the streets. but the reality is, when we're aattacked, we bleed. when we bleed, we die. and when we die, we cry. >> four police officers murdered in 11 months, that's as bad as it gets. >> reporter: back live at the precinct. we are told as cops tried to comfort officer holder's father, the father was actually trying to comfort them, the cops. we're live in east harlem, cbs 2 news. >> all right. and now a developing story. the search for gerald brook, he escape from police custody early yesterday. police say he was handcuffed when he shoved the officer to the ground and ran off. he has a long arrest record. he is the fifth prisoner to escape police custody since june. to another developing story, the legendary game show host bob barker is back home after being hospitalized following a fall. the former host of the "price is right" was out on his daily walk yesterday morning when he hit a patch of uneven pavement. he received stitches for a head wound but walked out on his own he retired in 2007 after 35 years hosting the price is right right. and now the amazing mets as they cob their championship chase. just one more game stands between the mets and the world series as they take a commanding lead over the cubs. >> reporter: this is not the met team that resembled a minor league team back in june. they have guys in the middle of the line-up batting .200. they're playing great all around ball again. great pitching. timely hitting. and of course, murphy remains hot, homering for the fifth straight game and now they are on the verge, one win away from getting back to the world series for the first time since 2000. >> we had our celebration and ceremony. and we did those things but right back to it. the series isn't over yet. this is a that deadly police shooting we have been telling you about, the fdr is currently closed in both directions between 96th street and the rfk bridge. the on-ramps are also shut down 49th and 63rd streets secure but the rollout has been uneven and that's led to fake emails telling people to update accounts by updating personal information. subway has announced a plan to sell only anti-biotic-free meats they'll begin with poultry products. they hope to have it in all stores by end of next year. and then they'll transition to turkey but the full transition won't be completed until 2025. in june, subway pledged to do flavors and preserves by the end of 2017. the american cancer society is changing the breast cancer screening recommendations. what was intended to clear up questions is causing more confuse now. we have the report. >> it definitely is confusing. you have to fight for what you think is right for yourself. >> reporter: screening for breast cancer, when to to start and then how often, the american cancer society, the nation's largest cancer charity and advocate for screening is calling for mammograms to start later than previously recommended. >> we should be encouraging instead of discouraging. >> reporter: instead of starting at age 40, the new guidelines say age 45 is best for beginning annual mammograms for women with an average risk for breast cancer and. at age 55, every two years. part of the reason is to cut down on the harm of mammograms, overdiagnosis and unnecessary surgeries. >> between 40 and 44 breast cancer less common. there's still a risk for a false-positive. and that needs to be the an informed decision between the woman and her health care provider. >> reporter: the guidelines and the confusion coming during national breast cancer awareness month and the main area of concern is how will this affect medical insurance. >> insurance companies could look at the guidelines and could say, this is the recommended age, we won't pay for anything. >> they're trying to save the money. the it's way too late. >> i think i would still go at 40. that's what i've always been told. >> and the new divide lines are not for those the at high officer holder was taken here to harlem hospital in critical condition and as i indicated earlier was pronounced at 10:22 p.m. >> an nypd officer killed in the line of duty. randolph holder was shot in the head while pursuing a suspect in east harlem last night following reports of gun. the suspect is now in custody. a section of fdr drive is shutdown while police continue to investigate. >> his father was a police officer in guyana and his grandfather was also a police officer in guyana. >> a legacy lost as you just heard. officer holder comes from a long line of law enforcement officers. we in the line of duty. >> the nypd duty was shot last night as he chased a gunman in east harlem. we have team coverage beginning with janelle burrell. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, mary. still a heavy police presence here on east 120th street near the entrance to the fdr drive where that gun battle began late last night. officer randolph holder was responding to a call as he had done so many times before but this time, shots were fired. he took a bull tote the head and -- bullet to the head and it cost him his life. a somber police commissioner bill bratton joined by mayor de from the scene toward the fdr drive. and a male victim telling officers that one of the men had stolen his bike at gun point. officers from the anti-crime unit spotted the suspect with the bike, full investigation and he maintains his innocence. >> reporter: and also charged in the incident, two others, all juniors in high school, charged as adult thes. police say he broke into his high school after hours and equipped a computer with hardware that allowed him to get passwords and log-in credentials leading to grades, schedules and other student information. they say once he retrieved the hardware, he could change grades from home. >> we believe daniel changed at least four of his own grades. and his own grade was changed from a 94 to a 100. >> reporter: it was district leaders who noticed changes being made without authorization. the detective wouldn't elaborate but said detectives were called in and found remnants which led to a search warrant and three arrests. his charges include burglary, computer tamper, identity theft, computer trespassing and eavesdropping. and one is charged with computer tampering. >> he felt he should have had a higher grade and asked daniel to make the change. >> reporter: and the third charges include computer trespass. and police believe the students all succeeded in obtaining what they desired, until caught, leaving students and parents at the high school in awe. >> everybody wants better grades but that's not the way to do it. >> it's all they do, they're on the computer. they know how to access things. i am surprised. really shocked. >> reporter: school district leaders aren't commenting on the case or the students other than to say they are doing everything they can to ensure this doesn't happen again. cbs 2 news. >> if the accused ring leader is found guilty, he could get up to 11 years in prison. convictions against the other suspects would carry a maximum sentence of four years. former nba and reality tv star alleged bike thief near the fdr drive in east harlem. >> we have live team coverage. janelle burrell has more from what is still a very active scene this morning. >> reporter: and chris, it is indeed. officer randolph holder was chasing down the suspects with fellow officers here near the entrance to the fdr drive when bullets started flying, one hitting him in the head and taking his life. a somber police commissioner bill bratton joined by mayor de blasio delivering the news about officer randolph holder late last night. >> 33 years of age, badge number 13340, a five-year veteran of the new york city police department was killed in the line of duty, murdered. >> reporter: gunned down the commissioner says as officer holder and fellow police officers responded to calls of shots fired near east 102nd street and 1st avenue in east harlem around 8:30 p.m. >> we're working here and next thing you know, you hear several shot, seven is or eight. and next thing you know, cops were here in seconds. >> reporter: witnesses told police they saw several men running from the scene. a male victim telling officers that one of the men had stolen his bike at gun point. officers spotted the suspect with the bike, chasing him over the foot bridge at 120th street and the fdr drive and then shots erupted. >> it was an exchange of gunfire between the male suspect and the two officers. during this exchange, officer holder was struck in the head. >> reporter: investigators say the suspect continued running north along the fdr promenade and eventually cornered and arrested at east 124th street with multiple gunshot wounds in his leg. police took three other men into custody nearby as officer holder was rushed to harlem hospital where he died just before 10:30 p.m. >> if there are witnesses that might help us on this, we would ask that they contact us and provide that information. >> reporter: now back out live, you are looking at east 120th street near the entrance to the fdr drive. still a very, very large police presence, a large crime scene they say they are continuing to process. they say they believe multiple weapons may have been used in that gun battle here last night. and they are still trying to recover some of those weapons. as for the suspect, he is still in the hospital this morning expected to be released and charged in this case. reporting live this officer randolph holder was with the housing bureau. and we are live if the officer's precinct in east harlem as we continue our team coverage. >> reporter: heart ache and sorrow outside of officer holder's precinct where he is being remembered this morning as a dedicated cop. >> i extend deepest condolences to his family,. >> reporter: a somber police commissioner bill bratton delivering the tragic news of the death of 33-year-old officer randolph holder, a five- year veteran of the nypd, a third generation cop who immigrated here from guyana and followed the family legacy. >> his father was police officer in guyana, and his grandfather was also a police officer in guyana. >> reporter: early this morning, in a touching heart wrenching moment, a procession of officers saluting the slain cop as his body was removed from the hospital, a recognition of his character and bravery. >> we're humbled by officer randolph holder's example, an example of service and courage and sacrifice. other officer in the nypd does when the call comes, he ran toward danger. the it was the last time he would respond to that call. >> reporter: officer holder is the fourth nypd officer killed in the line of duty in less than a year. back in december, police officers were ambushed and killed by a gunman in brooklyn. and in may, officer brian moore was killed after trying to question a man acting suspiciously in queens. >> new york city police officers every day go out and carry themselves like superheroes on the streets. but the reality is, when we're attacked, we bleed. when we bleed, we die. and when we die, we cry. >> four police officers murdered in 11 manies, that's about as bad as it gets. >> reporter: a somber sight, the mourning bunting here at the precinct. and we are told as police say he was handcuffed when he shoved an officer to the ground and ran off. brooks was wanted on a domestic violence complaint and has a long arrest record. he is the fifth to reserve list cape police custody since june. police commissioner bratton called the cops involved, quote, an embarrassment. and now those amazing mets as they continue their championship chase after dominating the cubs murdered. >> reporter: gunned down, the commissioner says as officer holder and fellow officers responded to calls of shots near east 102nd street and 1st avenue in east harlem around 8:30 p.m. >> next thing you know, you hear several shots. at least seven or eight. and next thing you know, cops were here in seconds. police they saw several men running from the scene toward the fdr drive. and a male victim telling officers that one of the men had stolen his bike at gun point. officers from the anti-crime unit spotted the suspect with the bike, chasing him over the foot bridge at 20th -- at 120th street and then shots erupted. >> an exchange of gunfire between the male suspect and two officers. during this exchange, officer holder was struck in the head. >> reporter: investigators say the suspect continued running north along the fdr promenade and eventually cornered and arrested at east 124th street with multiple gunshot wounds in his leg. police took three other men into custody nearby as officer holder was rushed to harlem hospital where he died just before 10:30 p.m. >> if there are witnesses that might help us on this, we would ask that they contact us and provide that information. >> reporter: now back live, scene here along the fdr drive, a very large crime scene that police are continuing to process here this morning. we are told that multiple weapons were likely used in that gunfire exchange. right now, police trying to recover the weapons used by the suspect. as for the suspect, he is currently being treated at the hospital and expected to be released later burrell live in east harlem with the very latest on the investigation. >> reporter: yeah, chris, investigators say that officer randolph holder was chasing down that suspect as he has chased down suspects so many times before when the suspect pulled a gun, shooting the officer in the head. it happened right here along east 120th street near the fdr drive where you can see there's still a very large police presence here this morning as they continue to process the scene. and now last night, police commissioner bill bratton made the announcement at harlem hospital. he says that holder and fellow officers were responding to calls of shots fired near east 102nd street and the fdr around 8:30 last night. and witnesses told them that a group of men had run from the scene and that one of the men had stolen a man's bike at gun point. and now officer holder and another officer were able to spot that suspect and chase him down to a foot bridge over the fdr and that's when the gun battle began. >> officers from the housing burrow and anti-crime unit in plain clothes encountered a male on a bike northbound at east 120th street along the fdr drive, that's a pedestrian overpass over the fdr drive. it was an exchange of gunfire between the male suspect and the two officers. during this exchange, officer holder was struck in the head. >> reporter: now the commissioner went on to say that the suspect was shot in the leg. he was taken into custody. officer holder died just before 10:30 last night at harlem hospital. now back live, we can tell you that there are a number of police violence complaint. he is the fifth prisoner to escape since june. police commissioner bratton called the cops involved a, quote, embarrassment. he thanked the russian president putin for his military support. three weeks ago, russia launched a series of air strikes in syria. it was his first foreign trip since a bloody civil war back in 2011. new jersey chris christie wants the port authority to reject any effort to launch flight service between newark and cuba until a cop killer is returned to the the united states. christie sent a letter to the port authority chairman saying flight service to cuba is totally unacceptable until he is extradited. in 1977, he was convicted of killing a new jersey state trooper. she escaped and made her way to cuba. the championship chase to the world series is one game away from the mets as they take game three in chicago. >> the team dominated the cubs on their home turf making it almost impossible to make a come back. almost impossible. daniel less common. there's still the risk for a false-positive. and we thought that needs to be an informed decision and shared decision between the patient and the health care provider. >> make sure to on gifts and other items this year. a survey by the national retail federation says consumers plan to shell out $805 on present, food, cards and other holiday purchases. that's the highest amount in
