have you with us. >> i'm andrea grymes. first, vanessa murdock is here with a look at the forecast. >> it was beautiful yesterday. >> and warmer today by about 4 degrees. felt a little bit of a chill. yesterday. but we will try to get rid of that. it will be lovely again. we start off with a frost advisory in effect until the temperatures are in the low to mid-30s. a crisp start. we will be warming up nicely. forty-five in the city. forty in white plains. thirty-two in somerville. thirty-four in the hamptons. as we look at the vortex satellite and radar, it looks identical to yesterday. nothing overhead. some clouds trying to push their way in well to the east. but it is not going to happen. blue skies today. by noon, 64. feeling like 63. by 3:00 this afternoon, a high of 72. by 9:00 this evening, 59 with clear skies. almost 10 degrees above normal. it will get even warmer tomorrow. the full forecast is not far away. back to you. we begin with breaking news. a police involved shooting in queens have look -- has left one man dead. >> several officers were sent to the hospital. we're live from south ozone park with the details. >> reporter: good morning. police have not released any information as to what led up to this officer involved shooting. the investigation here is still underway. the scene is still very active. as you can see, police officers and detectives are talking about what exactly went on trying to get more details and information about what exactly led up to this. >> this is the gun police say the suspect was carrying when he shot at officers. the scenes sprawled out over 116 avenue in the south ozone park section of queens. you can see police cones surrounding evidence and what may appear to be a gun on the ground. according to the nypd, the suspect was running from police when he turned back, firearm in hand. it is unknown if he fired the weapon or how many times he was shot by officers before being taken to jamaica hospital where he died at 1:30 a.m. this morning. more officers over the dispatcher radio. police say the incident only involves one suspect. no other civilians were injured. four officers were taken to a long island jewish medical center. as a precaution. they are not hurt. as the investigation continues, police are continuing to release more and more information and updates on exactly what happened here. we will bring you those updates as soon as they get them. live in queens, cbs2 news. the death toll in ecuador stands at 77 and is expected to rise after the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in decades. the epicenter of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake is along the south american country's inside of a supermarket in the capital city which is more than 100 miles away from the epicenter. highways were buckled. the port cities suffered the brunt of the damage. the weather center says tsunami waves are possible for the coast. residents are urged to go to higher ground. towns near the epicenter were evacuated as a precaution. for the latest on another deadly earthquake, this one in japan. thousands of rescue workers are searching for survivors. two powerful earthquakes in the southwestern part of the country have killed at least 41 people. the second quake, a magnitude 7.3, has damaged more than 1000 buildings and triggered massive mudslides that have swept away entire bridges and very highways. police have released surveillance videos of a slashing suspect they are looking for. they say around 3:30 a.m. yesterday morning, a 23-year- old man was walking with a female companion in the hunts they say the suspect approached and said something to them they could not understand. the suspect then allegedly cut the man with an object in the face before taking off. the victim was treated and released from hospital. the investigation continues into a slashing attack of a cab driver in queens by a man who may have been involved in a murder at a homeless shelter. police have released a picture of the man they are looking for. 53-year-old william smith. we have the story from elmhurst. >> these photos show some of the knife attack wounds on 43- year-old cab driver manuel vera. saturday morning, he was dropping off a passenger in queens. and then he became violent. >> instead of paying, he pulled out a knife and he slashed mr. manuel vera all over his body. his throat, his arms and is back. >> this is spokesman of the new york federation of taxi drivers. he says all cabbies and the public should watch out for this man wanted by police, 53- connected not only to the cabbie attack but also a murder that happened friday morning inside of a homeless shelter. marcus guerrero was found dead in his bed with a wire around his neck and a gash across his throat. >> investigators say the clues to possibly link the two crams include items that they say the suspect left behind inside of the cabin. his wallet with this identification and a cell phone. the injured cabbie spoke to his car company soon after he was released from the hospital. >> he went through a really hard situation. he is alive. >> nervous taxi drivers and nervous residents at the shelter insist on action. they say without better safeguards and more security guards and panic buttons, they could be in grave danger. >> anybody can come and go as they please. there is no security. >> officers described the man hot as intense. they say they want to get the suspect off the streets before he can attack again. four of the five presidential candidates will make appearances here in the city today. only ted cruz has no public events scheduled following his seat of delegates and wyoming. >> i ask you to please support the men and women of this country. >> donald trump to announce to the process. in syracuse, keep -- he pressed leaders. >> you better get going and straighten out the system. because the people want their vote. >> ohio governor john kasich stopped at a manhattan deli yesterday after visiting a synagogue on long island earlier in the day. on the democratic side, senator bernie sanders flew back from the vatican where he met briefly with pope francis to attend a faith and social >> i feel good about the campaign -- we're busting through and forcing a discussion that the establishment would assume push under the rug. >> hillary clinton visited los angeles yesterday where she criticized sanders for opposing gun control legislation. >> hillary clinton will visit staten island today and so will donald trump before he goes to west point. bernie sanders hold an event in prospect park and john kasich will guest on a radio show and do an interview with cnn. coming up later on face the nation, bernie sanders and the chairman of the republican national food, especially the food, there is something for everyone at this fair in downtown tenafly, new jersey. the tenafly chamber of commerce walked up the street hoping to attract 10,000 people. >> it is a good time to bring a lot of outsiders in and see the restaurants here. >> it destroys the business. else. >> massimo bazzarelli is the owner and chef at max's italian grill. he says the street fair cost him his entire saturday lunch crowd. >> a normal day, we get about 35 up to 40 people. today, we get zero. >> people and family just want to go for a walk. they are not interested in my business. >> other shop owners say business was down because of the block streets. some are hopeful the fair will pay off in the long run. >> it may hurt because of parking. but in the end, we are getting foot traffic. >> ahead of the -- the head of the chamber of commerce chamber of commerce admits they may try to find a way to get regular customers into the blocked off stores. >> this is our first time at this location. i think we can always do things better. >> if this will continue, i will be out of business. >> the businesses may face the same issues today. the street fair is a two day along with warming weather, tulips in full bloom are another sign of spring. you can go to the annual tulip festival at the westside community garden on west 89 street. there are more than 13,000 tulips and with the forecast. it is going to look and feel like spring today. it just doesn't this morning in many spots. it is cold out there to start. by this afternoon, we will be into the low 70s. highs 10 degrees above normal today. tomorrow will be pushing 80. and i expect a few '80s on the grid. let's go live outside to show off the beautiful skyline. bright blue skies to follow. mostly clear and 45 this morning. forty-five is the exception. many places only in the 30s to start off this sunday morning. otherwise as we go through the afternoon, it will be spectacular and even warmer tomorrow. and for the next seven days, it will be above normal. so quite an unseasonable stretch with very minimal opportunities for wet weather. a lot of sunshine too. let's look at the temperature trend. yesterday, 68. today, 72. tomorrow, 78. i do expect 80s on the board. tuesday, 67. overnight monday into tuesday, a little disturbance. we may see early morning showers tuesday. that is the best bet for wet weather in the first few days of the forecast. let's talk -- let's talk about what is happening now. today, high-pressure in place. sunny skies dominate the forecast. the whole eastern half of the out by this area of high pressure. what is also happening is wet weather to the west is being blocked. it will be really bad news for our neighbors through the midsection of the country. look what is happening this morning. thunderstorms are exploding across the state. from oklahoma into texas. this is the futurecast model. look at how the rainfall totals stack that. three up to 6 inches as we look to the northern portions of texas into oklahoma. locally around houston, austin, san antonio, eight that's -- eight up to 12 inches. it is going to be a very rough go unfortunately for them. for us, clear sailing. 67 degrees today for the first pitch as the yankees take on the mariners. a beautiful day for a ballgame. if you are in the mood to get outside, you want to keep this in mind. the today. a gorgeous day today. nice and warm. 10 degrees above where we should be. seventys and sunny. that is where we end the weekend. it will be quite nice out there. let's take a look at what is happening right now. so it will be warm this afternoon, but not necessarily warm yet. we will get there. here is a look at temperatures now. below freezing in sussex. at the freezing mark at toms river. forty-five in the city. and 40 in fairfield. on the satellite and radar, it is clear overhead. however, expect a hazy sky. as we go through sunday, i think it looks perfect. by noon, 64 degrees. feels like 63 under sunny skies. 3:00 this afternoon, blue skies, 72. by 6:00 this evening, 68 degrees. then we cool off to 59 by 9:00. and skies are still clear. it has been a beautiful drive stretch for the weekend. when do we finally see some rain? i will let you know coming up in my full forecast. back to you. we begin this half-hour with breaking news. one man is dead and several police officers were taken to the hospital as a precaution. shooting in queens. >> we're live from south ozone park with details. magdalena. >> reporter: police say this incident started when officers approached a double parked car. the nypd says the suspect was standing outside of the car at the time. and when he was confronted by police officers, he turned to run away and pointed a firearm at the officers. >> this is the gun that police say the suspect was carrying when he was shot by officers. the scene sprawled out over 116 avenue and 135 street on the south ozone park section of queens. you can see police surrounding evidence and what may appear to be a gun on the ground. according to nypd, the suspect was running from police when he turned back ,-com,-com ma firearm in hand. it is unknown if he fired the weapon or how many times he was shot by the officers before he was taken to jamaica hospital where he died around 1:30 a.m. this morning. you can hear the calls for more >> police say this incident only involved one suspect. no other civilians were injured. police say the man who was shot was 30 years old. four police officers have been taken to local hospitals to be checked out. but they are expected to be okay. they were not injured. nobody else was injured in this shooting. and the suspect has died at jamaica hospital. we're waiting on more updates and will give you them as soon as we get them here at south ozone park in queens. cbs2 news. new this morning, fire strikes a three-story private home in brooklyn. the call came in shortly before midnight last night in into 1600 block of new york avenue. the fire was brought under control. no injuries were reported. note -- no word on how it started. and other fire in new jersey where a man is being quick actions that saved lives. he spoke exclusively to cbs2 and we have the story. >> smoke billowing up into the air over an apartment building in bloomfield. firefighters say flames erupted on the second floor of a unit on charles street. this man works at a car repair shop behind the building. >> by the time i dialed 911 and looked up again, it was big. >> when he noticed part of the roof collapsing, he risked his life and ran inside the burning building. >> the roof was falling in. i said, someone has to be inside that house. >> i went in and yelled, fire, everybody out. >> everybody did get out, safe and sound, including a woman that grabbed her two daughters and ran as fast as they could. i had no shoes. >> the mayor of bloomfield was on the scene. he said two, six family buildings were damaged in the fire. he also says he will make sure that way campbell gets honored for his selfless act. but he says he is no hero. >> no just doing what i can't. >> the red cross is helping six families displaced by the fire. two young children scene wandering the streets of queens are back home safe after a frightening ordeal. surveillance video captured one of the siblings in the middle of the street yesterday morning at 145th and 123rd avenue. they say the grandmother have been looking after them but fell asleep. >> the girl was crying profusely. happened. but the kids are okay. >> the mother says she found her children in an ambulance after coming home from an overnight shift. two other neighbors say a couple weeks earlier, the children had to be rescued from the same intersection. criminal charges. a man who fell from a hotel on the upper west side remained hospitalized this morning. he fell from a building from a hotel on west 94 street from a hallway window on either the eighth or tenth floor. the 29-year-old checked into the hotel thursday. police do not know if he fell accidentally or if he was pushed. he was rushed to st. luke's hospital in critical condition. the nypd says a gun buyback in queens yesterday was a success. police released a photo of 85 working firearms that were turned in an exchange for a $200 prepaid card with no questions asked. there is no limit to the number of firearms that can be surrendered but they are the buyback program aims to get it legal an unwanted weapons officer. the newark public safety department has confirmed has confirmed a hacking attack at the police department. they say the virus infected several computers last week. the department's director says there was no indication that information was compromised or lost. he says the department's it employees were quickly able to clean the system. additional safeguards have been installed. it is 6:39 a.m. she was just a little girl from hoboken you loved to play up a little more than yesterday. the full forecast coming up. some footage of a driver barely escaping, as a tree falls right on top of his car. this happened during heavy wind in the republic of georgia yesterday. several cars and houses were damaged. so far, no reports of injuries. a dr. seuss book is no laughing matter to a michigan couple. they failed to return the book which was checked out by their adult son from a local library. they were late also returning a novel. they paid the proper finds but say they refused to pay over $200 of what are called diversion fees to a unit of the police department. they call that extortion. say they risk up to 93 days in jail if they fail to comply. the tax deadline is looming. you have until tomorrow to file your state and federal tax returns. if you ask for an extension, you are in good company. the irs says 13.5 million people are expected to request one. but remember, it is an extension to file, not to pay what you might owe. high-pressure system is so powerful that it is causing big problems for our neighbors in places like texas and oklahoma and into colorado. for us, smooth sailing. let's check in with our weather pushing 80 tomorrow. slightly cooler along the coast both days. today, forecasting a high of 72, 10 degrees above normal. sunrise was about a half-hour ago. sunset is at 7:38 p.m. this evening. here is the deal. high-pressure dominating the eastern half of the u.s. a powerful area of high pressure. it is blocking this area of low pressure from progressing east. so what that means is that we will continue to see big issues in texas, oklahoma and into kansas and colorado. here is the snow you can see wrapping around the system. this will mean flooding and severe weather for our neighbors to the west today. for us, with with a high pressure overhead, it will be a super sunday. warm and 10 degrees above normal. tomorrow, even warmer, pushing 80. watch what is happening. this cold front to the north dips in monday and into tuesday. so early tuesday, maybe a sprinkle. but it will not be significant. we will need some rain. in the near future, friday into saturday, a better opportunity for us to get some rain. seventy-two. cooler at the coast. expected to be in the 60s. if you're going to head to the mountains today -- it will be a beautiful bright sky. tonight, much more mild. fifty-two in the city. we are not really seeing any 30s out there. there could be an exception. but most of us will be in the 40s and low 50s overnight under clear skies. tomorrow, cranking up the heat even more in the city. 78 degrees. gorgeous again. a few more clouds as the day progresses. northwest wind at five up to 10. expect a couple of 80s as we look at the tri-state area tomorrow. tuesday, early tuesday -- maybe a sprinkle and 67. wednesday, back to beautiful and 65. tuesday will be a beauty too as we get into the morning hour. seventy-four on thursday with it is friday. that the forecast looks unsettled. before we get through this dry stretch, we will need some soggy days to make sure we do not deal with wildfire problems. anytime the wind kicks up when it is a strike, it becomes a concern. so some rain by the end of the week but we may need it sooner. >> i know everybody loves this beautiful weather. but we have to keep it in perspective as well. that it can cause some concerns. >> so some good weather. also some good deals. we're talking about these temperatures warming up. we may have more than just a good forecast in our future. the month of april offers good
