His student out for his first lesson. Mechanical problems shut the engine down but the pilot now hailed as a hero for managing to find the one place where no one would get hurt. [ pause ] the citys Buildings Department issued a stop work order at a construction site in manhattan after a worker was seriously injured. Authorities say the worker fell from the fifth floor to the basement of a building on west 17th street in chelsea this morning. He was taken to a hospital, is in serious condition tonight. After a preliminary investigation, inspectors determined the injured worker was not using proper safety protection equipment. After the storm melting snow is blamed for an underground explosion in lower manhattan. Sparks and smoke spewed off an Electrical Equipment blew up at around 9 30 this morning in lower manhattan. The blast was Strong Enough to send heavy metal plates flying into the air narrowly missing stroller and a man walking by. Goofs really nervous. The he was really nervous. Reporter we are live on main avenue near bride well place in clifton and you can see that this bus stop itself the landing has been cleared very nicely. So has the access point where people would step on or off the bus. The problem is that there are no pathways cleared to this point from either side. So people either have to walk in the street or through the snow. Stops in northern new jersey is still a dangerous trek. Actually crossed over from there and walked through the snow. A little hassle. Reporter tuesday night cbs 2 highlighted the scary path from the new Jersey Transit bus stop off route 3. Today that walkway was cleared. Others along busy roads like this highland bus stop on route 4 east in paramus still requires people to walk through deep snow or out in the street close to speeding cars. I usually walk around here and its kind of more risky for me getting hit by a car now. Reporter a spokesman for the paramus shade tree and Parks Commission says they, quote, provide a path to cross the access ramps on certain island bus stops shelters which may not have a paved walkway. But he goes on to say that some pathways are the responsibility of businesses since the bus stops are on their property or because they rented space at the bus stop to advertise. Some riders say they dont care who is supposed to shovel and plow. Its bad enough that the bus stops are along the highway. But now its covered in snow. Its ridiculous. I think by now they should have a system set up where this should be done. Reporter now, this is an interesting situation because underneath this snow we are told that there isnt a sidewalk. Its a grassy surface and based on the conversations i had today there is no protocol in place to clear a path on a grassy surface. No one is really required to do it. Still, the conversations i have had today with people in different municipalities they say if your bus stop is still snow covered the best thing you can do is report it. The department of sanitation says City Residents starting tonight can put their trash out and recyclables out on the curb according to the normal schedule but with ongoing snow removal efforts there may be some delays in the trash pickup. Reporter at first emergency crews told her there was no way an ambulance could make it through the whiteout conditions to bring her nearly 20 miles from her home in bohemia, new york to Stony Brook University hospital but a paramedic was determined to make it happened. Once he arrived at her home he shoveled through two feet of snow to get to her door and the nightmare kind when they hit the roads. We maneuvered around cars that were stuck all over the place and cars spinning out in front of us. My fear was that somebody was going to crash into us or we were going to get stuck and that was going to delay you getting here. And i wanted to make sure you were going to get the organ you needed. Reporter a little boy just 6yearold was walking to school with his mother when a recan jumped on him and scratched his face. Danny walls was going to work had he he heard the screams. He jumped out of his car to help. I see his claw into the kids face and biting the kids face. Reporter he grabbed his painting pole and started beating it. I killed the raccoon, the kid jumped up screaming. He was crying. Reporter walls wife also heard the screams and called police. All i saw was a man with a stick hitting, hitting and i was like, oh, my god a man is hitting a woman and a kid. Reporter but as she got closer she realized it was her husband. Then when i noticed he was the raccoon, so im very proud of him. Reporter danny walls says once the chaos of the moment settled, the little boys mother seemed grateful for his actions. We did speak to the mother briefly and she says her son is recovering here at Hackensack University medical center. The police is working with the school to people parents informed about the case. Nobody wants them but a local Animal Shelter is going through extraordinary lengths to keep problem dogs alive. Reporter death row dogs get a possible reprieve, a 6 yearold shih tzu named riley is on the unadoptable list at the city Animal Shelter in stamford. Riley does not care for people. But he is fine around other dogs. Of five dogs eligible for a new program. The chihuahua named paulie is another. He will bite you. Reporter they are a tangle of fear, food and guarding aggression possibly headed for an upstate new york sanctuary for dogs unfit to be pets. For instance, this dog likes his toys too much. Tennis ball. Reporter last year this Animal Shelter didnt put a single dog down for behavioral reasons. They did, however, send several to animal sanctuaries at the cost of 5,000 each. Thats for a lifetime of care. That gets expensive so now the city is setting up a charity so animal lovers can pay for the program. Its called leash on life. This would just be happening as donations. Somebody saying donations because they like to see the animals saved thats easier than saying we are never going to kill any animals. We dont want to euthanize these animals. We do our best to be sure we can do what we can for them. Reporter at 5,000, if it sounds like a lot some say it a dog can live up to 15 years. So that money can go very quickly. So youre worried about the care for the dog in the long term. Yes.
