Owe made his Minor League Debut in 1943 but like others his playing career was interrupted. He served in the navy in world war ii on a gunboat supporting the dday invasion of normandy. You listen to it and repeat it over and over. And it makes sense. The character he was off the field overshadowed the accomplishments he had on the field. I mean, he has more world series rings than any player in history. But ultimately what sets yogi berra apart is his relationship with the fans. You think yogi you think of a better day. Brings back memories of that. Seems like that time is going. Im getting older so i get more choked up easier. Excuse me. But you know, the loss of yogi is like a loss of another age. What did you say . I said hello, pope. Thats yogi berra. I think this is great because we are celebrating his life, wit, charm and personality. Thats im sure the way he would love to be remembered. I was going through a lot of his quotes today and just laughing and its a great way to be remembered as you said. Now i got some tears in my eyes. Another High Pressure system down around the Tennessee Valley will come to town say maybe a little bit off to our west for tomorrow bringing kind of a sort of a northerly component to the wind but dont expect that to lower the temperatures. Heres how i see things working out. Pope arrives at jfk at 5 p. M. It will be 77. Nice sky out there. St. Patricks cathedral 6 45, 73 degrees. And right know youre looking at a live picture of pope francis celebrating holy mass at the basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in washington, d. C. Good evening, im kristine johnson. Im Maurice Dubois in washington, d. C. We have been watching, um, the papal mass being celebrated right now along with father jim. Welcome to you. Its good to see you. He is the president of Niagra University also spends about 23 years at st. Johns university so a new yorker as far as i can tell, right . Yes. Absolutely. Great to have you with us. So you have been listening to the sermon and we heard the holy father saying, go forth. He said it many times throughout the sermon. In keeping with his sort of message, correct . And what do you think he many of the . I think what he is focusing people is on action. If you think about one thing thats the hallmark of this holy father its the old franciscan saying, preach the gospel with all your power, and use words only when necessary. So his preaching is really seen not only in the proclamation of words but by bold actions and thats whats calling and challenging and inviting us all to do with this and his papacy. I have been struck by the bluntness of and the boldness of the way he has been speak. For example, you were at the white house early this morning which i mean, well get into that in just a second, the sensation, but in what he said, the substance of it, he got right up there and went right at it, immigration, um, you know, religious freedom, um, the environment, he was blunt and bold and thats some hallmark of his papacy. It sure is. I think hes, um, you know, he is not sparing anytime. I think he is really, really focused on, you know, Challenging Church Leaders on challenging the church and challenging leaders in in general in society to say, we have Critical Issues that we have to face. Issues that are around poverty, around care for the earth, issues around living simply and this throwaway culture that we that he often speaks about and how what he spoke about today at the white house and he has repeated consistently is creating a culture of what he calls in spanish [ nonenglish language ] , encounter. And so the engagement of people where all human lives matter, and thats really whats so central to his papacy that no one should be thrown away whether thats the care for the earth, whether thats a policy, an Economic Policy that discards people, whether thats the immigrant or the refugee. So its that culture of encounter of engagement of dialogue of listening that he is really focused on. What about for you being one of 15,000 at the White House South Lawn pope, president , i mean, dignitaries from where everywhere. What was that sensation like . That had to be something. It was amazing. The image that sticks with me was the holy father came in, um, with a fiat. [ laughter ] and so, you know, it is sort of the symbol really matches the rhetoric and the reality. And so we sort of got a great glimpse as he walks as he drove through and was dropped off and waved but thats really for me what stays with me is his real focus on simplicity of life and as a priest as an educator, i know im particularly challenged to say, how am i trying to live simply . And so how do you create that connection between what you consume and the people who produce that . So you really create that ecology of spirit that he has he talks it and walks it. Father jim maher, we appreciate it. Thank you. As we look inside at the canonization mass at the basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, pope francis is saying his first mass in the United States right now a very special one.
