Stretcher during todays deadly fivehour shootout and standoff between police and the alleged gunman at a Colorado Springs planned parenthood facility. Two people along with the university of colorado and Colorado Springs Police Officer Garrett Swayze were killed. I heard someone shooting. This distraught man rushed to the clinic after hearing gunshots on the phone talking to his sister, who was at the facility for an appointment. She was calm. Of course trying to hide from the people. Reporter Law Enforcement storeses say the suspect started to shoot in the parking lot before moving into the facility. Officers were met with gunfire. The bulletproof windows proved a challenge for police. Businesses in the area immediately went on lockdown, even as police slowly evacuated the clinic the shootout with the suspect lasted for hours. We got officers in the building at the planned parenthood and the officers suspect and make communication with him. At that point able to get him to surrender. And he was taken into custody. Reporter the alleged gunman gave himself up because he realized he was surrounded. Police say the suspect brought several items into the building that are now being checked. We have to work with our e. O. D. Units, explosive ordnance units to make sure none of the items are a further hazard to the people on scene. Police departments in our area stepped up patrols near planned parenthood clinics. The nypd said it was stepping up security in the city and Suffolk County police say they were doing the same.
