nik is here live with a big announcement today, tuesday, march 21st, 2017. >> from nbc news, this is "today," with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everybody. welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning. this is an extraordinary device besides phonom story. the new the type of electronics that passengers can carry on flights bound for the u.s. two reports this morning. let's start with miguel almag r almaguer. he's at los angeles international airport this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: this ban will affect about 50 flyings arriving into the u.s. each day. many airlines are warning their passengers of the changes. but they have until friday to fully implement them. the new temporary restrictions banning most electronics, come after elevated intelligence, indicating terror groups continue to target aviation, including, quote, smuggling explosive devices in consumer items. the ban will not affect some flights coming into the u.s. from overseas. the ten impacted airports, all in the middle east and africa, are now on notice. nine overseas airlines with flights directly into the u.s., given four days to implement the new rules. passengers on those flights will no longer be allowed to carry on electronic devices larger than a smartphone. tablets, laptops and similar sized electronics will need to be checked. >> if fact they're limiting this ban to a electronic device, means they must have very detailed, very pristine intelligence about what the threat is. >> reporter: citing efforts to hide explosives in shoes, underwear and printers, u.s. officials decline to be more specific about their intelligence or how recently it was obtained. there's no change for domestic airlines or security at home. and there's no timetable for how long the ban, affecting 50 flights a day, will last. >> people will get used the fact that you cannot bring a laptop or an ipad on to a flight. >> reporter: the push to keep the u.s. safe, impacting how some travel into it. no u.s. airlines are affected because no u.s. carriers operate flights from the affected airports into the u.s. most international travelers won't notice any change. back to you guys. >> miguel almaguer, thank you. pete williams is taking a closer look at what's behind the restrictions. most of us have gone to an airport and asked to turn on our laptop to check it. what do we know about what's behind this new threat? >> well, the officials we're talking to aren't disclosing much about that other than saying it's based on an asse assessment of intelligence. this is apparently based on a combination of concern about terrorists, refining plans to hide explosives in electronics. and assessment of security at specific airports. that's what produced a detailed outcome at the ten airports in the middle east and africa. it's not an urgent threat. these restrictions have beenties cussed since at least last week. and the airlines have four days to put them into effect. compare that to the government's action when a liquid bomb plot was discovered. the ban on liquid was imposed instantly, overnight. and it's worth repeating that this applies only to flights to the u.s. from those airports and not to any of the thousands of flights a day inside the u.s., matt. >> pete williams in washington. pete, thank you. now, to the fallout of the fbi director's dramatic capitol hill testimony. talking about president trump and refuting his climaims of beg wiretapped by president obama. and confirmed that there is an investigation of possible collusion between the trump campaign and russia. the president not making mention of either of those things at his political rally in kentucky. let's start with peter alexander at the white house for us. >> reporter: good morning. make no mistake. this was a monumental day. this morning what president trump dismissed 24 hours ago as, quote, fake news, we know is very real. with some of the country's top security officials confirming the fbi is investigating whether campaign associates of the sitting president of the united states colluded with russia during last year's election. >> this place is packed. >> reporter: president trump rallying red state kentucky. >> louisville. >> reporter: but avoiding the elephant in the room, the rebuke by james comey before a congressional committee, before mr. trump's wiretapping claims. >> i have in information to support those tweets. we have looked carefully inside the fbi. >> reporter: the president standing his ground that president obama ordered surveillance of trump tower. >> president obama could not unilaterally order a wiretap of anyone? >> hurt. >> reporter: this tweet from the president's official account, leading to a fact-check from the fbi director. >> russia did not influence the electoral process. is that accurate? >> we've offered no opinion, have no view, have no information on potential impact because it's never something we looked at. >> reporter: backing up his boss, the president's spokesman, insisting the russian investigation is much ado about nothing. >> there's a point you continue to search for something that everyone who has been briefed hasn't seen or found. >> reporter: trying to distance the president from key campaign advisers, who democrats accuse to having ties to russia. >> general flynn was a volunteer of the campaign. paul manafort who played a limited role for a limited amount of time. >> reporter: flynn served as national security as visor. and manafort chaired mr. trump's campaign last summer. the white house had recently suggested that british intelligence might have helped president obama spy on trump tower, an allegation the grish government with rejects. and the head of the national security agency publicly warned that spreading false claims like that risks damaging the u.s. relationship with one of our closest allies. let's bring in ari melbourne and nicolle wallace. lots to unpack. let's look at the extraordinary revelation that yes, in fact, the trump campaign is being investigated by the fbi for alleged ties to russia. put it in perspective. this is not something you hear every day. >> this is the first time the fbi has confirmed it. probably why they had to confirm it was president trump's repeated statements, some were shot down. this is significant. it does not mean there's a fire of collusion between russia and the trump campaign. that will be investigated. but there's enough smoke to have a federal inquiry. it's huge. >> there were a lot of headlines. savannah and i were talking before the show. there were two that stood out. in the middle of the day, the potus twitter account, the white house sends out a tweet mischaracterizing something that comey said during the morning session, that director comey said in the afternoon. they knew the eyes and the ears of the world and the media were on that session and they tried it anyway. >> i was on the phone. we covered the hearings on our sister network. you were covering them over here. we were on the phone with the white house in real-time. and in real-time, they were denying what was coming out of their own official's mouths. this digging in on the wire trapping was described by two confidants as delusion. he believes that the term wiretap should be more broadly defined. he was sticking by his guns. it was described as incapable of admitting when he's wrong. he puts the rest of his cabinet in a precarious position. secretaries of defense have meetings with other countries. and now, secretary mattis is going to have to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with another defense secretary. and i'm certain he will be asked if he believes the fbi director of the united states or rather delusional president of the united states of america. >> well, the other idea that came out that caught our attention was what we just saw in peter's piece. sean spicer the white house press secretary is now saying, general flynn, he was just a volunteer in the campaign, like he was putting up yard signs. he became national security adviser. and you have the talk of paul manafort, who spicer says plays a limiting role. he was the campaign chairman. we know the facts. >> he was booked on the show. we had him on the set in cleveland. here's the strategy. their strategy is to cleave off anybody that was not a paid staffer. this is a distinction in their minds to separate out people that may be part of this investigation into russia and trump camp ties. >> ari, let's talk -- one of the things that the republicans spent time talking about was leaks. and the damage that can be caused by leaks of classified information. they have a real point on that. what can the fbi do to plug the leaks? >> they can investigate that. it was two hoearings. democrats asking about russia, and republicans asked about leaks. you don't know where they will land. and honest and faithful people in the mill tear and intelligence services, do talk to the press on and off the record. we looked up the top ten folks on the campaign. in the general election. seven of them were unpaid, including people like jared kushner and steve bannon. you don't have to be a trumpologist to know, that volunteer does not cut ice, not legally, not financially. >> if you are the biggest trump fan in the world, you know the difference between true and false. so, why -- what is the strategy there? >> reporter: who stole tom brady's jersey after his huge super bowl win? the mystery, apparently now solved. after the hunt went global, spanning from houston, to mexico, all the way to the heart of patriots' nation. while combining the world of sports, media and law enforcement. overnight, mexican authorities released these photos of the quarterback's infamous jersey, that's been valued at $500,000. after this shocking video, caught on a fox sports camera, allegedly shows the suspect, walking in behind the team, just moments after the game, wearing press credentials around his neck. then, just 14 minutes later, he walks out with what appears to be the jerseys r s under his le arm. around when brady realizes his jersey is gone. law enforcement officials say they recovered the jersey across the border in mexico. along with another brady jersey from his 2012 super bowl vict y victory. and a helmet that may belong to von miller. the fbi now involved because of the international nature of the crime. >> the suspect had access to the event. and it wasn't as a ticketholder. okay? >> good question, kerry. >> that leads us to nik wallenda. good to see you. before we answer that question, you said that piece was shot a couple of days ago. there's been improvement, physical improvement in your family members since then. >> actually, my aunt's foot cast has come off. my sister's jaw is no longer wired shut. the doctors are blown away at strong the performers are. it's a miracle. we had a performer fall 35 feet from that wire. he landed on the ground on his feet and called his mom. it's a miracle. >> it's a miracle. we heard from grandma and from you, you'll get back on that wire. and you have some specific news about when and how you'll do that. >> that's right. extremely exciting. we heard a lot of negative news lately with ringlingling closing. big apple is back. we're going to start in new york city, in the fashion they've done for 40 years. an i, along with my family, will be headlining on that show. >> you're going to be a regular member of the big apple circus for a long period of time? do you do that in ned advance? >> you want to do these things overtime. we're talk about $100 to faucets to six figures to add a master bedroom. you want to think about downsizing or moving where these things are possible with less money. >> all right. let's talk about your second option when it comes to housing. this is moving your parents into a continuing care community. tell me about that. >> right. these have become popular in recent years. they're stepdown communities to care. you move in when you're healthy. you have an apartment with a house or kitchen. as you need more care, you move into assisted living, where you take your meals in the dining room. as you need more care, you may step into the nursing facilities at the same place. be careful. these things are popping up. but they can be very expensive. and they're not highly regulated in a lot of states. >> you need a good recommendation. >> you want a lawyer to read your contract. >> the third option is to have your aging parents move in with you. or you have move in with them. this gets touchy for a lot of families. >> it is. my mother has told me this is her plan and it's good to know. you have to make sure you have space for this to happen. that if you need renovations, they're the same things that we were talking about earlier. only 1% of the homes in the country are equipped that way right now. and the cost of this day-to-day care can get expensive. we're talking $22,000 a year. if you need to bring in a home health aid, which is why so many people decide to offer care themselves. and that cuts into wages and retirement. >> let's go to the top. we started by saying you have to have is frank conversations with your parents. if they're not at the stage of life with they think they need to consider this, how do you broach the subject? >> it's so good for sandwiches, salads. >> we have our baguette. i like to slice it diagonally. we're going to toast this for about ten minutes. i burn bread. >> that's really good. >> carson is working on the fillet. >> did you season it, darling? >> it's television. >> salt and pepper, put it in a cast iron pan for four minutes. flip it. and put it in the oven, six minutes for medium-rare. carson will show you how we cut it. >> thin as possible. >> we like to pair this with a layer cake cabernet. >> talk to me. >> let's layer it is pup we have the horse radish, which you can buy in the market. and the pickled onions. >> this is great if you want steak at dinner but you don't want to commit to a full entree. you get this little toast. >> i like to do arugula with that. that's what the arugula is for. and the pickled onions. it's so pretty. >> you can use roast beef. >> they have it at a restaurant. it's a delicious appetiter. everybody loves it. >> talk to me about the grilled cheese. >> this is inspired by a place in santa monica. they would invite people to come for a grilled cheese ale pairing. we've done some pairings since then. this is a belgian ale, a triple. hearty, strong alcohol content. this is being paired with a sour dough, and a muenster cheese. those pairings with the ale, work out pretty nice. >> matt is mixing up his pairings. >> matt has a porter in his hand. that goes with the pumper nickel bread. and that's an extra sharp cheddar. >> bite first. and then, all kind of wash it back with the beer. the third one is a hef wisen with a multigrain. and that's a pepper jack cheese. this is fun to have people over and do tastings and cut the sandwiches up. >> this might be my favorite version ever. >> it really is so good. >> i think you should try this other one. rye and what? >> pumper nickel and extra sharp cheddar with the porter. >> do i keep the sandwich in my mouth when you drink? >> whose idea was the potato chips? >> that was for you. >> i like to put potato chips in my sandwich. >> is that a chocolatey beer. if you're trying to come up with a pairing, how do you figure that out? people with kids, i used to have kids in my life. and man, stuff gets messy. >> that's right. light switches are one of the places that is the dirtiest and the least frequently cleaned because people touch it all the time. you start with a microfiber cloth. rubbing alcohol, which everybody has in their house. you can put it on the microfiber cloth. and just wipe down the face plate. you can see, we have two different kinds of light switches. this one has screws, that collects dirt and grime. you can get these crewless face plates. they take less than five minutes to install. >> what about remote controls? >> that's exactly right. with remote controls, do the same thing. rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth. remote controls actually come apart. you can pull the back off. you need -- >> you pull the batteries out first. >> that's right. take the batteries out before you clean. and they come apart in the rubber panel. that's where the cheeto dust gets collected. saved the best for last. 15 seconds. >> when our professionals said we needed to clean a lamp shade. >> nobody. but lint brushes and 60 seconds, you can remove the dirt and grime. >> who knew you could take a little -- is this a dyson?
