what's really behind mark zuckerberg's cross country journey to meet americans? could it be part of an early push for, yes, the white house? today, wednesday, january 18th, 2017. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everybody. welcome to "today" on a wednesday morning. happy to have tamron while savannah continues on maternity leave. >> good to be here. counting down to the new president but many thoughts are with a former president this morning. >> george h.w. bush taken to a houston hospital as a precaution. our affiliate kprc is there. good morning. >> president bush was admitted to houston methodist hospital on saturday for shortness of breath. he is responding well to treatment, and his doctors are pleased. >> reporter: former president george h.w. bush hospitalized in houston after experiencing a shortness of breath. overnight, his office chief of staff saying he is in stable condition and, quote, doing fine. president bush is now 92 years old and needs a wheelchair to get around. his public appearances have become increasingly rare over the last several years. his most recent, 11 days ago, appearing alongside family at a houston texans playoff game. earlier this month, the family spokesperson told nbc news the 41st president and his wife, barbara, now 91, would not be attending friday's inauguration, siting their advanced ages and, quote, all that entails. the couple who celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary also didn't attend president obama's inauguration in 2013. this latest hospital stay marks the fourth in the past three years. he was hospitalized twice in 2014, once with pneumonia and another with breathing difficulties. 2015, he fell down at the family's home in maine, breaking a bone in his neck. two years ago, the oldest living president, not letting age slow him down, celebrating his 90th birthday with a sky dive. >> doctors for the former president are hoping he will be released from the hospital soon. at this point, we don't know exactly when. matt, back to you. >> thank you very much. our thoughts are with the former president. >> absolutely. president obama holds the final news conference of his presidency today. one thing he is sure to be asked about is his controversial decision to commute the sentence of chelsea manning, the former army analyst convicted of leaking classified information. we told you last week it was something that was being considered. now, it's happened. nbc's andrea mitchell has more for us. good morning. >> morning, tamron. chelsea manning will be freed in may after serving seven years of a 35-year sentence. the white house said because her sentence was much more severe than that of other leakers. the secrets she disclosed were not that harmful to national security, and she showed contrition and faced trial, unlike snowden, who fled to russia. this is opposed by defense secretary ash carter. >> reporter: this morning, president obama's decision to release convicted army leaker chelsea manning is drawing fire from republicans. in statements, house speaker paul ryan calling the move outrageous. senator john mccain calling it a grave mistake. senator tom cotton, a war veteran, said we ought not to treat a traitor like a martyr. chelsea announced her transgender identity the day after she was convicted for releasing secrets to wikileaks. manning spoke about it on "today" with savannah. >> i think the ultimate goal is to be comfortable in her skin. >> reporter: manning twice tried to convict suicide since being incarcerated in an all male prison. >> she wanted to give information to the american public that she believed they deserved to know. >> reporter: in 2010, then-defense secretary robert gates described the leaked damage this way. >> is this embarrassing? yes. is it awkward? yes. consequences for u.s. foreign policy, i think fairly modest. >> reporter: at her trial, manning apologized for her actions. the audio obtained exclusively by nbc's cynthia mcfadden. >> i want to go forward. before i do that though, i understand i must pay the price for my decisions and actions. >> reporter: also tuesday, president obama pardoned retired general james cartwright, once one of his top military advisers. the former joint chief's vice chairman pleaded guilty last fall to making false statements to the fbi about leaks to "new york times" involving a joint u.s./israeli cyber attack against iran's nuclear program. he wrote the judge was not the original source. an appeal senior officials say helped psway the president. >> president has commuted the sentence of 1300 people already may do more on thursday. so far, no pardon has been offered to former cia director david petraeus, who pleaded guilty to misleading the fbi about classified materials he shared with his then biographer and mistress. >> thank you very much. we should mention, we'll carry president obama's final news conference later today on many of the nbc stations. now to our countdown to the inauguration. two days from now. the president-elect made a quick trip to washington last night to attend a pre-inauguration dinner for diplomats, donors and his incoming staff. he took to the stage, made some brief remarks, heaping praise on his cabinet nominees and vice-president elect mike pence. a poll shows most americans, 69%, say trump's use of twitter is a bad idea. without review, it can have major implications. 26% said it is a good idea because it allows a president to directly communicate to the people. >> trump's inaugural committee revealed the two bibles he'll use to take the oath of office. one will be the lincoln bible used in 1861 by lincoln, and by president obama for both of his inaugurations. the other will be a bible that trump was given by his mother as a child. our political team is ready to go, covering it all. we'll start with nbc national correspondent peter alexander, down at trump tower. good morning. >> matt, good morning to you. donald trump is now just 48 hours away from truly running the country. it may be sinking in. a reporter who met with him here at trump tower late yesterday described the incoming president as unusually subdued, saying he was lowering expectations and acknowledging what could be the messy realities of governing. >> reporter: in the nation's capital, pre-inauguration festivities are underway. donald trump celebrating with diplomats and ambassadors. >> i know how safe this room is. boy, oh, boy. >> reporter: hours after he spoke with axios on media affairs, saying, quote, i've had a lot of briefings that aren't i don't want to say scary because i'll solve the problems but we have big enemies out there. two days before taking office, trump is taking aim at democrats, pouring fuel on his feud with john lewis. >> he conveniently doesn't remember. how do you forget if you go to an inauguration. i can tell you if i was at inaugurations. you don't forget something like that. >> reporter: slamming the congressman for saying this would be the first inauguration since taking office he won't attend. despite skipping george w. bush's in 2001. >> we didn't attend it, like so many other members of congress, but president bush was a friend of mine. >> we need seats so badly. >> reporter: the last of lawmakers boycotting the inauguration is growing, 50 says they won't attend. >> i don't honor him, don't respect him, and i don't want to be involved with him. >> reporter: democrats are putting trump's cabinet picks in the hot seat. betsy devos grilled for her advocacy of charter schools ate school? >> correct. >> you children didn't either, correct. >> correct. i've mentored in one. >> reporter: devos said it should be up to states whether guns are allowed in states. noticing protection from grizzly bears in states like wyoming. >> i would imagine there is probably a gun in the school to protect from potential grizzlies. >> reporter: last-minute inaugural preparations are in full swing in washington. in addition to the supporters taking place in the celebration of the new president, officials are also expecting tens of thousands of anti-trump protesters. at least one group vowing to shut down the inauguration ceremonies and paralyze the city. >> optimistic about our chances of having a very vibrant show of resistance on friday. >> reporter: the priority for police, keeping everyone safe. >> they can be as vigorous as they want vocally, but when they physically assault or attempt to disrupt an activity, law enforcement has to take action. >> donald trump repeatedly said there will be record numbers of spectators at this friday's inauguration. law enforcement officials in washington tell me they're expecting under 1 million people in attendance. compare that to president obama's first inauguration, 1.831.8 million in attendance. trump is praising the bikers for trump, saying they're an additional security layer. they i saying, they're rough. >> peter alexander, thank you very much. a cabinet hearing is beginning for the president-elect's choice for health and human services. it is a critical one, given the ongoing efforts to repeal and replace president obama's signature health care law. hallie jackson is on capitol hill. good morning. >> hey tamron, good morning. some democrats tried to delay today's hearing because of ethics questions they had. donald trump's transition team, accusing them of basically playing politics. today, it will be congressman tom price in the hot seat with the war over obamacare intensifying. >> reporter: facing his first congressional checkup today, congressman tom price, the georgia doctor picked to lead the health department and help oversee donald trump's overhaul of the health care law. price's public exam, hot on the heels of what could happen if the affordable care act is repealed without a replacement. projection, 18 million americans could lose insurance after the first year. 32 million americans could use it after ten years. premiums spiking 20% to 25%. to the gop, the estimate, not painting the full picture. house speaker paul ryan's office calling it meaningless, since it doesn't factor in a plan to replace the law. the catch? republicans haven't announced a replacement plan yet or even agreed on what it should look like. donald trump says he is down to the final strokes on that replacement. don't expect to hear those details today from price. instead, a transition source tells nbc news the congressman is prepared to offer broad principles in line with the president-elect's campaign pledges. adding, price and trump have met twice in the last two weeks. >> going to be very proud of what we put forth, having to do with health care. >> reporter: price also certain to be asked about a report he invested thousands of dollars in a biomedical company not long before introducing legislation that would benefit it. with the transition team now demanding a retraction. democrats demanding more information. >> any prosecutor would say, oh, boy, i'd better look into this. to have the hearings and try to have the vote before we know the results here, that's a huge mistake. >> reporter: the trump team says any connection between price's legislation and campaign contributions is demonstrably false, saying a broker conducted trades without input from price himself. >> congressman price will have his official confirmation hearing with the senate finance committee next week. today, significant, in that it is the first time he is here on the hill as a cabinet nominee facing questions from his fellow members of congress. president-elect trump said he wants health care for everybody. the big question, of course, is how do you pay for it? tamron? matt? >> hallie, thank you very much. now to something new tied to politics. today's fact check. over the weekend, trump warned in a tweet, car companies and others, if they want to do business in our country, have to make things here again. >> on tuesday, general motors announced a $1 billion investment in the u.s. walmart has revealed plans to add 10,000 jobs this year. >> trump followed up those announcements with another tweet, thanking them for starting the big jobs push back into the u.s. how much credit should the president-elect actually be taking? let's bring in msnbc's ari melber. i'll give the numbers with gm. $1 billion investment, 1500 new jobs, 450 jobs that would be coming back from mexico. some 5,000 jobs over the next few years. you can look at this and say, they read that tweet and that's why they reacted this way. what's the reality? >> donald trump seems to think they read the tweet. the reality, matt, is that gm has said this is not a response to donald trump. it is part of a four-year efficiency plan which included a larger number, $2.9 billion in investments last year. >> we've seen the power of these tweets. look what happened with boeing when the president-elect took on the cost of the new air force one. their stock nosedived. it's happened with other companies. how are the companies preparing for these potential hostile tweets, and are they worried what it does to their stock prices? >> they are worried. we see momentary dips. though most of the market capitalization comes back up fairly quickly. companies are willing to deal with this as a pr issue. they are accelerating, reacting or rolling out announcements in order to avoid any bad, basically twitter attention from donald trump. they have also stressed, just about, except for the carrier deal, which involved some state benefits from a state government, they've all stressed they are not changing their business model. >> let's go back to where we started. if you had to rate the president-elect's impact on job creation or job preservation over the two-month transition, how would you rate it? >> the caulk is the water seal between the tub and the tile that surrounds it. you don't want the water getting into the walls -- >> making sophie the giraffe look like nothing if it gets in there. >> exactly. every once in a while, when it is discolored or is loose and peels away, slice through the existing caulk. >> breaking the seal. >> using a tool or a utility knife. clean it with all-purpose cleaner and a sponge. >> put painter's tape down. >> to create an even line. hold this at a 45 degree angle. evenly apply the caulk all the way along that edge. then you want to run your finger across that to create a smooth seal. >> you take the tape off while it is wet. >> so that it doesn't dry on there and you pull it off completely. >> what do we save? >> upwards of $100. >> great. the last one happens to a lot of people. you notice your refrigerator isn't keeping things as cold as it used to. >> one of the issues might be this refrigerator ge eor gasket. close the door on the dollar bill in different points. it stayed put. that means our seal is actually pretty tight. >> try it in different areas, as well. >> if it slips down, that means you need to replace the seal. >> it is connected to the door. >> easy. you pull it off. there is no tools required. just pull it off. get the make and model for your kind of fridge. >> right. >> your replacement. it is an easy youtube video to follow. >> ms. do-it-yourselfer is doubting you. >> first of all, how much do we save total? >> cumin. >> how do you pronounce it? >> good question. >> i thought it was my accent. come on. blend that up. it is like this spicy tomato broth effectively, right? you get the point. comes out looking like this. start with a big piece of pork shoulder like i have here. season it generally. >> right. >> salt and pepper. you don't need too much pepper because you have the chipotle. same on the other side. big piece of pork. i've taken the bone out. the good thing about a shoulder is it is inexpensive because it is usually tough. we're going to cook it tender. little bit of flour. into a nice, hot pat withn with little oil. >> brown that off. >> once you get a nice crust on it, we've got one where i cheated and already have one. you want the caramelization until it looks like this guy. beautiful and brown. in the same pan, you throw some peppers and onions. >> right. >> you're going to develop some of the flavor. >> crunchy bits on the bottom. >> you're lifting up all of that off the bottom of the pan. pick up your tomato mixture. toma tomato, chipotle, cumin and oregano. once it is cooked for a minute, give it ten minutes or so, you take it and you throw that over the top of your pork in your slow cooker. if you don't have a slow cooker, use like a cast iron pan. >> could you braise it in the onion? >> sure can. throw in some potatoes. pop your lid on. then you turn it on low. cook it for three to four hours, which is a good thing because you can come back to it later. one it comes out of the slow cooker, it looks like this. i've got a knife here. the truth is, you don't need it. you can kind of pull that apart. see how that breaks apart?
