into the home straightaway. >> the first ever olympic gold medal for a woman's wrestler in u.s. history. >> bolt comes off with a lead and now he's really working. >> announcer: from nbc news this is a special edition of "today" at the olympic games with matt lauer live from rio de janeiro, brazil, and savannah guthrie live from rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to our last special split edition of "today" during the summer olympics. i'm matt lauer along with hoda kotb on copacabana beach. savannah is back in new york city. take a look down from the chopper above. some of our athletes from team usa spelling it out for us here on the beach. included in that group, seven medal winners from thursday that pushed the u.s. total to 100 medals including ashton eaton, the world's greatest athlete times two winning the decathlon yesterday. >> by the way, that's a beautiful sight from up above. very nice. >> don't get any wrong, i'm looking forward to going home but i'm going to miss it here. >> it's been blast on the beach and fun with the athletes. we have a lot coming up. as we said, major developments overnight in that robbery scandal involving four american swimmers including ryan lochte. two of the swimmers heading home overnight after speaking with police. but we still haven't heard from ryan lochte. what does this mean for his future, for his endorsements? we'll talk to bob costas about that and then we'll look back at what an incredible two weeks it's been at the venues and here on our set, right? >> it's really been great. let's go back to new york and check in with savannah on this friday morning. savannah, good morning to you. >> i'm all smiles because you guys are coming back. we'll get you caught up on politics. in a surprising shift from donald trump as he does something he's never done on the campaign trail. he expressed regret for making statements that he says have caused some people pain. we'll hear from him in just a bit. for now, we'll send it back to you in rio. >> all right, savannah. thank you very much. let's talk about that scandal that continues to evolve. it involves those u.s. swimmers including ryan lochte. their claims of being robbed have now been debunked by rio officials. the usoc apologizing. keir simmons is at the gas station where it all happened. keir, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this is the gas station that you're about to see in security footage. what's stunning this morning is that an altercation here could turn into an international incident. as you can see, there are security cameras surrounding this gas station. there was never any chance that what really happened would not come out. overnight a brokered deal with brazil. jimmy feigen's attorney saying the swimmer agreed to donate $11,000 to a brazilian charity to resolve the case. >> anything you would like to say to your supporters? >> reporter: hours earlier, gunnar bentz and jack conger allowed to leave brazil after giving statements to police their brazilian lawyer is taking a shot at ryan lochte telling reporters they didn't speak with any journalists or lie to any journalists. they were just quiet and didn't know what was happening. the usoc now confirming the police version of events investigators saying the gold medalists were never robbed. evidence security video from early sunday. at 5:47 a.m., swimmers ryan lochte and jimmy feigen are seen leaving a party. at 6:07 a.m. you can see one head toward the back of the gas station near the bathrooms. a minute later the four emerge followed by a gas station employee. concerned because the swimmers had vandalized the bathroom. that's one of the security cameras that filmed the footage. the swimmers walk through here and further down as you can see an advertisement appears to have been pulled from the wall. at the back are restrooms that were badly damaged. we can see no sign of that now. the swimmers return to their cab. at 6:09 their driver gets in and security guard approaches reaching out. it's unclear if he has something in his hand. at 6:12 after a discussion, the swimmers exit the taxi. at 6:14 we see a different angle. in the upper left you can see swimmers put their hands up and sit down. a guard approaches them with his hand on the hip. one of the guards told investigators he did draw his weapon to gain control of four large athletes one of whom was getting aggressive. the guards let them go after they handed over $50 to pay for the bathroom damage. this is a very different story from the one lochte first told "today's" bush. >> these guys came out with a police badge. no lights. no nothing. police badge. they pulled us over. they pulled out their guns and then the guy pulled out his gun. he cocked it. put it to my forehead. >> reporter: in the days since that interview lochte changed details but sticking to the story they were robbed. the american embarrassment forcing usoc to apologize to the people of brazil. the behavior of these athletes is not acceptable nor does it represent the values of team usa or the conduct of the vast majority of its members. now perhaps the confusion really occurs not here at the gas station but beside it at the car wash. this is where you can see in that security footage the swimmers sitting at the curbside. they are having a conversation with gas station officials. what swimmers say is there was no one there who spoke english. brazilian officials say there was a translator. the swimmers, perhaps, didn't understand why they were being asked for money. brazilians saying they made it perfectly clear. perhaps all of this was lost in translation. guys? >> all right, keir, thank you very much. we can confirm that gunnar bentz and gunnar bentz have landed back in the united states. we've spoken to jimmy feigen this morning. he confirmed that he has revised the statement he originally gave to the police. he's agreed to pay that $11,000 in restitution. that will get him his passport back. he's not in possession of his passport right now. he hopes to get it soon and then leave brazil tonight. >> no word from ryan lochte yet. >> not yet. bring in nbc's bob costas, host of prime time show here on nbc. there have been so many incredibly great stories over the last couple weeks. this story is dominating the headlines over the last three days, bob. in the future, will this be seen as a footnote to these games or something more? >> i think it might be more than a footnote. it's not going to be a dominant story. so many historic things sportswise happened here and although we have our fingers crossed and a weekend back, there have been a few glitches but by in large none of the things we feared about olympics in rio have come to pass. they've done a good job hosting. people have been wonderful. we've all had a good experience and we have come away with dozens and dozens of memories of great sports events and people we met and interacted with so this while i'm not trying to mip mi minimize it, this won't be something in the end that's at the top of the list or even close. >> how much bigger do you think this story got because it hit a sensitive spot in rio the fact that there were these robbers with badges and things like that. how much bigger did it get because of this? >> they are rightly concerned with the image of rio as a place that has security you associate with olympics and terrorism aside, they have a legitimate issue with street crime. nobody denies this. if this had been true, they want the world to believe they would have aggressively pursued whoever was responsible. if it turns out not to be true, they don't want this to besurge their reputation. >> what's the future for these swimmers particularly ryan lochte in terms of endorsement and future in the sport? what's the impact? >> he's the bold face name. the others more or less get a pass. people forget about it or say they were younger not a big deal. he's the central figure. as you said, swimmers make most of their money off endorsements. it's not all prize money. he's probably cost himself millions and millions of dollars. >> bob, stick around. he'll be back in our next half hour and we'll talk about the question are we seeing the best athletes? is this perhaps the best u.s. team ever in rio. speaking of actual competition, usain bolt, the world's fastest man was back on the track last night as team usa reached a special milestone. natalie is here with all of the highlights. >> really great number. our athletes have now 100 medals for the fourth straight summer games. seven of them coming on thursday while usain bolt struck gold again. the fastest man alive usain bolt rushing the competition in the 200 meters. >> he makes it look easy. >> winning the sprint in three consecutive olympics. bolt's parents looking on as their son made history. prior to the race, bolt teasing the tv audience at home. in the race, the olympic champ breaking out early and never looking back. but despite another gold, bolt was disappointed he did not break 19 seconds. >> i'm always happy for the win, but i wanted the fastest time. >> bolt said rio will be his last olympics going for a triple triple. gold meldals in 100, 200 and relay in three straight olympics. >> there he is. that's the heart of a champion. >> it was also a huge day and night for team usa racking up five gold medals. american ashon eaton maintaining the title of the world's greatest athlete. >>en behind me throughout all these years, this is for them. >> enduring two days of gruelling competition to win back-to-back olympic gold in the decathlon. >> muhammad is out fast. >> in the 400 meter hurdles. dalilah muhammad the first american to win gold in the event and teammate ashley spencer taking the bronze. on the men's side, winning gold in the 400 hurdles. and in the shot put, american ryan crouser also grabbing gold with a new olympic record and a silver delivering a one-two punch in the event. in women's wrestling, another gold overcoming the three-time olympic champion from japan crying tears of joy from the podium. >> i didn't start as a tough girl. i lacked a lot of self-confidence and wrestling has given me that. >> american women steam rolled france winning their semifinal match getting set to face spain on saturday in the gold medal round. and finally a relay redo for the american women initially failing to qualify in the 4x100 meter relay after allyson felix made contact with a brazilian runner. >> they dropped the stick. >> causing this botched baton handoff but americans were allowed to run again. >> she has the baton. >> in take two, americans managed to qualify for tonight's finals. so standings in the medal count remain unchanged. u.s. and china, great britain and china. u.s. with a commanding lead there. take a look at that number for team usa. 100 through thursday. the fourth straight summer games of 100 medals or more. how much do we love that? and coming up today, the men's and women's 4x100 relay. the gold medal match in women's soccer. it will be sweden versus germany. the game to watch for sure. >> thanks, natalie. you mentioned that gold for ashton eaton in the decathlon. the world's greatest athlete is on with us at copacabana beach. can we just say the world's greatest athlete times two. how does it feel the second time around? >> i'm a little bit more sore now. it feels good. >> this is one of these things that goes over two days. you're known for building up the lead. how were you feeling going into the second day. did you think you could hold the lead? >> i have to admit there were times when i was doubtful. it was a good thing because there's these young kids coming up really pushing me. that challenge is what i thrive on. i rose to the challenge. i'm glad i did. >> on thursday during pole vault you had that amazing pouch. the emotion you showed said it all. >> at that point i was thinking i'm not sure if this is in the bag. i think at that moment i knew that all my training not just for the last four years but really my whole life, physical and mental, led up to that point. >> all comes down to the 1,500 meter. how much pressure were you feeling standing at the beginning of that race? >> you know what? normally i'm very nervous. i feel a lot of pressure. i'm willing to run myself into the hospital if i have to to get this. i was actually in a cold shower beforehand thinking are you going to step up and do this, ashton? i made a pact with myself. yes, if i have to go to the hospital to run that hard, i'll do it. >> you have ridiculous criticism for wearing canadian cap when in reality your beautiful bride who is here with us is from canada. you were cheering her on. >> you competed. you won bronze as well. how do you guys split the focus? concentrate on your own events and keep an eye on what your spouse is doing. >> it's easy for me because i went first. it was tougher for ashton. i don't know how he does it. >> i got inspiration from her. four years ago she walked into our coach's office after getting 11th in the games. she said i want to be on the podium. to see that transition and make that dream a reality was powerful. >> are we going to sit with both of you in tokyo? >> oh man. >> no pressure. >> no idea. >> we can say that we absolutely loved and enjoyed everything up until now. >> okay. >> thank you so much. world's greatest athlete times two. thank you. we'll have much more from rio just ahead. don't forget you can catch nbc's prime time coverage of these olympic games 8:00, 7:00 central and the spectacular closing ceremony sunday night here on nbc. let's go back to savannah in new york. >> all right, guys. in the news this morning, we have a new report that zika may be spreading in southern florida. at least two more cases apparently traced to miami beach. nbc's kerry sanders is there for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the florida department of health confirms there are now 35 cases of locally acquired zika in south florida. the majority of those have been concentrated in a neighborhood in miami called wynwood but now sources are telling nbc news that the health officials strongly suspect that they have found two cases of zika here on miami beach. acquired again from local mosquitos. to get at that this morning, the mosquito control efforts on the beach have taken off with a vengeance. they are spraying insecticide and at risk not just pregnant women but also a tourism industry here valued at $24 billion. overnight an e-mail said it's important to note that the department of health have not confirmed cases at miami beach but we have confirmed that cases are being investigated and the battle on the beach is now a full-on war. >> we have all hands on deck. this has been going on since january. i wouldn't want to be a mosquito on miami beach. that's for sure. >> reporter: to try to get an understanding of how important this is here, not only $24 billion but since zika was discovered in south florida, tourism, advance booking at hotels, dropped 72%. of course we need to factor into that it's the end of summer, people are getting back to school and getting kids ready so it may not be directly linked to zika but it's something they're watching closely here. >> absolutely. tourism important where you're standing. thank you. we move to the presidential race and rare admission from donald trump. the republican nominee expressing regret for the first time during the campaign for some of the divisive comments he's made along the way. nbc's hallie jackson is in charlotte where trump had a rally last night. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. for donald trump and his running mate from charlotte to baton rouge making an unexpected stop in louisiana to tour the flood damage there. it's not the only surprise from trump. as you mentioned, it's something we've almost never heard from him. this rare admission of regret about as close to an apology as he's ever gotten sounding more humble in charlotte. listen. >> sometimes in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don't choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. i have done that.
