edition of "today" at the super bowl with matt lauer live from glendale arizona and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everyone. welcome to a special edition of "today" on a monday morning. i'm matt lauer. savannah al natalie and carson. anybody see a little football game? >> we didn't beat your seat matt. you were right there and it was an amazing game. >> it was unbelievable. i thought about it and i was there with my son jack my 13-year-old. how do you describe it? i came up with one word. really? that's the call you make on that goal line situation? i have to say i'm a pete carroll fan and i like the seahawks but i agree that it was probably the worst coaching decision in football history. >> poor thing. what do you think? >> stunned. >> i was on a plane headed back. people were screaming on the plane. >> i thought you could hear the screaming. >> it could have been the seahawks fans. >> i went to the third quarter when the seahawks were up by ten points only to hear my husband cursing a half hour later. >> i guess i know what happened. >> there is an old expression in football that said if you throw the ball three things can happen and two are bad. one of the worst things happened at end of that game. it is our top story. tom brady rallied the patriots to a fourth title while this morning the seahawks are second-guessing what might have been nbc sports. josh elliott is next to me and we have been shaking our heads. >> yes. what knows. it's a stunner here. fans around the country and the globe witnessing as matt just said the most unbelievable endings in the history of the super bowl. a half yard from a second straight super bowl triumph and then came that decision that changed the game and really rewrote countless legacies. >> with the patriots facing sure defeat they denied seattle a second super bowl title. >> intercepted at the goal line! >> the ball on the half yard line butler picked off wilson at the goal line, clinching the first title and prompting an immediate backlash against pete carroll. >> i cannot believe the call. >> the call was stunning. rather than giving the ball to marshawn lynch, one of the league's most punishing backs. >> marshawn lynch in the back field and a guy that has been border line unstoppable in this part of the field. >> social media erupt as emmet smith tweeted that was the worst play call i have seen in the history of football. >> the patriots were not always efficient, but more than effective, completing the largest fourth quarter come back in super bowl history. in erasing a ten-point seattle lead and negating one of the more incredible catches anyone had seen. tensions ran high and a brawl broke out. afterwards patriots owner robert kraft was delighted and defiant. >> we won today 28-24. our people didn't touch the balls. i love our team and i'm proud of our guys. >> for tom brady, a fourth super bowl win and third mvp award celebrated with his family afterwards. while the patriots danced on the field, during halftime that belonged to katy perry who pulled off an eye popping field bending performance with the help of lenny kravitz and missy elliott with a giant lion and a few lip synching sharks. provided the second biggest dose of fireworks. matt it's interesting, this is a fourth title for the team. obviously in the aftermath of deflate gate that still looms comes a very complicated legacy for new england. i can't imagine this is what the league wanted. not only are we now left to do that we are not even talking about anything new england did and what seattle did not do. >> nbc wanted a game like that. that was one of the most exciting games ever and i agree with what you said. you have marshawn lynch in the back field, a guy who in the second half of that game said this guy is unstoppable. >> it's why you have him -- clock management manage what it is. you use your last time out and throw a pass and if you get the fourth down you have a choice to make. >> how is marshawn lynch feeling knowing what could have been. >> i'm not sure he would tell us. >> he would be fined for what he said this time. >> the man who made the game-saving interception for the patriots. malcolm butler have you slept at all? >> no i haven't. good morning. >> good morning and congratulations. we all have dreams as kids malcolm, that we will hit the winning home run in the world series or throw the touchdown pass or catch it in the super bowl to become the champions. could you have ever dreamed that you would be a super bowl champion and the super bowl hero? >> um yeah. i just got through talking to a former player from the new england patriots like four or five hours ago and he said do you realize what you have done? i told him yes, but not really. all this is new to me. i am glad i can make a play for my team. i'm emotional and excited and happy at the same time. i'm just glad i could make a play to help us pull it off. >> you are a rookie. an undrafted rookie and you played about 200 plays in the course of the season. there was a time where you were in no man's land with football. you were working part-time at a restaurant. forget career was there a time that you thought your life wouldn work out this well? >> most definitely. working drive through at popeyes, you will have doubters anyway. serving chicken, when you are going to play that ball and making pro. i just wanted guys that have a lot of guy ss that are supposed to be here with me. i didn't want to be one that wasted my talent. i took the best of it and i had no idea how to be here. >> you are here and i will tell you as you head home to new england, you will see a reception from the patriots fans you will never have to buy another meal for as long as you live in new england. people will be paying for every check you run. congratulations, you are the super bowl hero and the super bowl champion. >> thank you, thank you. it's an honor for you to have me. thank you. >> thank you so much. what a great guy. we will have much more on the game and the halftime show which was phenomenal. the commercials were great. we barrelled into the northeast. another punishing storm pounding a region struggling to dig out. it slammed the midwest first. >> the snow won't stop. >> a record in chicago. up to 18 inches in just 24 the planes were punished. i-80 shut down in nebraska and accidents and ice. in toledo ohio the public ordered off the road for a snow emergency. some couldn't find their cars. at the brookfield zoo in illinois a snow day. >> the snow runs your life. >> new england is in the bull's-eye after last week's record snow and ice, it promises to get ugly again. with a foot of snow expected here in boston they canceled public schools and the same is true in chicago. the peak of the storm is expected to hit later on this afternoon followed by a day of freezing temperatures. savannah? >> weather they ongoing measles outbreak. his goal for his final 23 months in office. i asked him what is being done to help the female american hostage held by isis an aide worker captured in 2013. >> we are deploying all the assets that we can, working with all the coalition allies that we can to identify their locations. we are in very close contact with the family trying to keep them updated. obviously this is something that is heart breaking for the families and our obligation is to make sure we can do anything we can to make sure any american citizen is rescued from the situation. >> you said in your state of the union that american leadership is helping to stop the advance of isis in syria and iraq. your critics say that is delusional and in fact they have gained more territory since the air strikes have begun. >> that's not accurate. in iraq we have seen the iraqi security forces and kurdish forces continue to push back against isil. the critics you suggest i would imagine have us redeploy troops -- it's not a struggle. let me finish what i'm saying. it is possible for us to deploy 200 or 300,000 u.s. troops. if we don't have inside of iraq or inside of syria or inside of afghanistan both the capacity and the will of people to fight for themselves, then any gains that are made will dissipate. it takes longer but it's the right way. there not things you can be doing short of a huge presence of ground troops that would help this goal of what you say to defeat isis happen more quickly? couldn't we do more? >> anything we could be doing, we are doing. >> the criticism i hear a lot of you even from your political allies is you came into office and you were the president that was going to end the wars and that you are so focused on doing that and not getting the u.s. entangled in another war that you are slow to react and passive. >> you repeated that comment three different ways and the truth of the matter is that we are doing exactly what we should be doing to make sure that while we are pushing back isil we are not creating another situation in which we deploy massive numbers of u.s. troops. those who want us to shoot first and aim later typically get this country into really bad situations. >> evaporate the forces of militant extremism and jihadism grown stronger on your watch if you look at syria and iraq and libya and yemen, a place where al qaeda's branch is so active and vicious and the government our ally collapsed. >> yemen is a tough situation. the country has always been fragile and the governments have never been strong. we have been able to maintain pressure on al qaeda in that region such that -- >> can you do that without a government that is a partner. >> we feel confident that we can maintain that pressure. i believe we are safer. obviously that doesn't mean that we aren't concerned about the break down of order in this region. >> have you watched one of those videos of hostages being beheaded? >> it's fair to say that anything related to these terrorist actions i take a look at. >> i hear you saying you have. >> i have. >> it must affect you deeply to see something like that. >> i think it would affect anybody who has an ounce of humanity. it's part of the reason why we have been successful in organizing the coalition. >> i want to ask you about the measles. do you feel there should be a requirement that parents get their kids vaccinated. >> measles is preventable. i understand there families that in some cases are concerned about the effects of vaccinations. the science is pretty indisputable indisputable. we looked at this again and again. there is every reason to get vaccinated. there not reasons to not. you telling kids to get your kids vaccinated. >> get your kids vaccinated. it's good for them and we should get to the point where measles is not existing in this country. >> 2016. on a scale of to 10 with 1 being happy and 10 being over the moon how happy are day on what's going to make a difference in the lives of the average family out there. we have been able to i think do really interesting and creative things even without congressional cooperation. i think there is the possibility of cooperation around infrastructure and tax reform and simplification and we will have battles along the way. there will be a bunch of stuff that we can do that is productive. >> when you did the interview, you were 12 days into this. >> look at that. i look so young. >> what would you tell this person if you had a chance? >> what i would tell him is that you
