you are trying to get in, out and around philadelphia the city prepares for the pope. >> we have another warm day ahead of us, cooler temperatures are on the way if time for the pope's visit. it's 6:00 a.m. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today, i'm tracy davidson. >> it's throwback thursday. it's cool out. let's go to nbc 10 brittany shipp with our forecast. >> it is a cool start to the morning. the temperatures are either in the 40s, 50s or 60s. it's still cool across the board. we'll warm things up nicely above average for us. it will be another summer-like day in fall. satellite radar shows clear conditions. we'll see lots of sunshine, heading into the rest of today and a few little clouds moving in south jersey, right along the shore, our current temperatures at 48 degrees. 58 in philadelphia. 55 degrees in wildwood and 53 degrees right now in trenton. so again, a cold start, taking the kids to the bus stop, make sure they have a jacket. they will definitely need it. our temperatures will start off in the like i said 50s and 60s, some locations even in the 40s this morning. today we warm close to 74 degrees for the poconos can lots of sunshine, 81 in allentown, '80s the high in reading. 81 in norristown. '80s if mount holly,a ith the high along the store and then a closer look at the philadelphia area, 80 degrees, temperatures will stay above average today and tomorrow, but we head to average. below average, we take a closer lock at the forecast. saturday clouds and breezy, sunday 73 with a chance of showers to the south coming up, we'll take a closer look at that chance of showers. i'm let you though what to expect, break it down hour for hour for you in my forecast. let's check it down with jessica boyington. >> as you said out the door the 42 freeway around the new jersey turnpike seemed a little more traffic headed northbound than we normal live do this time. i want to show you this camera. a five minute drive time. northbound to the walt whitman bridge. something to watch out for. i would give yourself an extra five or ten minutes in case the backs up quite a bit. now we show you what's happening. let's show you what to look forward to when the pope arrives this weekend. i'm getting a lot of questions about this. what will happen? are we going to be affected? the answer is. but we do have some closures. 676 northbound between exit 3 and the ben franklin bridge. that's because the ben franklin bridge is closed also so you can't get up there if you will not be able to come around and turn back. you can expect residual delays when traffic is pretty much spanning out to avoid these closures. as for construction sites, the new jersey debt of transportation is halting all lane restrictions. the work sites will still be active. so there will be no lane restrictions on any of the majors. >> that will be until monday the 48 i 28th at 9:00 p.m. look for the atlantic city rail non-stop between atlantic city and philadelphia and patco will have limited station stops. you want to check with them. you can go to nbc10.com for more information. >> we are getting a live look at the capital building where in a little more than three hours the pope will make history addressing a joint session of congress. he is expected to speak about immigration and climbed scroll. we have live team coverage from augdz do philadelphia. we are live with transportation closures happening today. first let's go to washington, d.c. live with matt le duck u luck ka. pope francis will be the first pope to address congress. >> it will be history making. i tell you, we have moved quite a bit over the past couple hours, first to the line coming into the west lawn here. now we have finally got in position to try to give you the best view we have. you can see some of the crowds that have already formed out here. 50,000 tickets were given out for this event. up there is the capital. the pope will come south there just before 11:00. here's the run down. 9:15 he will arrive and meet with souts speaker boehner. then pope francis will address a joint session of congress as we mentioned the first time in history that that will happen t. pope will then come out on to that balcony there and greet the crowd for a few minutes and lead. for the members of congress, this is not just any head of state. i have been talking to senators, casey and toomey talk about why this visit is so important for the nation. >> we need his message badly right now. if he can help calm the waters and inspire us to work together, that will be as meaningful as any particular issue that he'd be adressing. >> i think he is a very inspiring figure. he's obviously a great spiritual leader of my church. so i'm looking forward to it. >> and back out here live on the west front lawn of the capitol building. you can see, we are quite a ways back here, at least a few hundred yards from where the pope will be coming out to wave to the crowd. all the people are in here. some got here very early just after midnight. we talked with those folks waiting in line. they woke up very early. we will hear from them coming up at 6:30. people from all over the wunt, all over the world, trying to get a glimpse of pope francis here in washington. >> st. joe's university this morning, students will watch the festivities. and that address to congress, j you the beginning of what will be a very busy day for the pope. take a look at his schedule a. little later this morning, he will visit st. patrick's in washington. then he leaves at 4:00 joint base andrews. at 6:49 he gives the evening prayer on fifth avenue in new york city. as we're preparing for the poem pope, we are keeping a close eye on how washington is handling the big crowds there. people were impressed by the calm of the crowd at the canonization mass yesterday afternoon and the planning on the part of the org uniteders, every element of the liturgy appear to be seamless. >> i knew it would be exciting. but oh my effect today. if you purchased a yellow parking placard, your car must be moved by 10:00 tonight or it will be towed. as you know, towing began closest to the parkway on sunday. you have one of six dprajs to choose from or you can keep your car through monday morning. only people who live or work along the parkway and around lo dependant square will be allowed into this area tonight. security checks begin at 10:00. septa is closing several stations, regional rail and subway service will continue. let me show you the jumbotrons in place. there will be four in the area between downtown close to independence mall stretching all the way up to the art museum. now, when we spoke to the producer of seat's concert, he told us that he plans to begin sound and camera checks on stage here this the parkway. >> >> good morning. right now our temperatures are starting off on the chili side. we definitely need a jacket. and for philadelphia, we're at 58 degrees. our humidity is at 75%. wind speeds out of the north northwest at 5 miles per hour. our city planner shows how things will shape up for today by 8:00 a.m. in the low 60s. 11:00 a.m. 73 degrees. so above average once again for us. similar to what we saw yesterday. those warmer temperatures about 5 degrees above average. our average is 75. today 80 degrees and then we start to cool things down. the cooling trend will continue right into the week. so really comfortable conditions temperaturewise, for everyone on saturday and sunday. now satellite radar stat shows the area of low pressure here off the coast of the carolinas and that is what we're going to watch. we have high pressure in control. >> that should help block and keep us and suppress us to the south of our area. but there is a possibility of it moves too far to the north. you get a few showers by sunday. for right now, on saturday, we're going to see a high of 75 degrees, with breezy conditions by 4:00 p.m. 75 on sunday. we start off in the 60s by noon, 68 degrees by 4:00 p.m. 73. this is when we have our chance of showers, which right now will mainly stay to the south of our region. so i know that is a big question. i will take a closer look at this pontiff, got a hug. she is a u.s. citizen, bonn here in america. her mom and dad came to los angeles from mexico without papers. >> i am scared that one day they will take them away from me. >> sophie's note asked pope francis to help keep parents like hers in america. immigration as you know is one of the pope's top issues. today when the pope addresses congress, he is sure to get a warm welcome him conservatives are already rejecting his call for more compassion on immigration. >> live in our breaking news centers in saudi arabia where 310 people t. death toll has gone up. they are now confirmed dead in a stampede that took place during a religious ritual near the islamic holy city of mecca. it's about 3 miles from mecca. this is a live picture of the religious rich warm t. hajj pilgrimage taking place. here's what happened, 2 million people were there. they were taking part in a ritual in which people throw stones at that giant pillar in the middle of the screen. there was a large crush of people. the saudi arabia minister tweeted 4,000 rescue and medical personnel are now on scene treating the injured. this is a pilgrimage that muslims take knowing there could be something tragic like this happen. this comes about every few years. in fact, nine years ago, in 2006, 364 pilgrims were killed in a stampede at that exact area in 1990 more than 1,400 pilgrims died when a pedestrian tunnel collapsed as the pilgrims were trying to make their way to mecca. we will continue to follow this situation in saudi arabia. we will let you know if there is any change in the levels. it stays that way throughout today. allentown 50 degrees under mostly clear skies and in the atlantic city airport, we're at 64 degrees and philadelphia 58. it spreads this morning. still a cold start in places like potts town 48 degrees, definitely a jacket. the kids need a jacket this morning headed into the afternoon, you will not you will see a few clouds moving into delaware and lunch hour, down the shore, 76, plenty of sunshine throughout the entire area. closer to the city, temperatures range between 78 and 81. sunny and wind 10 to 15 miles per hour. your headlines. i will take a flag down the vine street expressway. where we see volume actually is on the west pound side, typically headed towards 24th street and 30th street station. it seems like we're having some type of technical difficulties here. we wanted to show you that a second ago. it's okay headed into that direction. expect overflow due to the closures with the ben franklin parkway. we'll have more first pope ever to address a joint session of congress. he's expected to speak in glimpblt he's expected to touch on immigration and climb change. nbc 10's matt deluca is outside the capital capitol right now. what changed since we last saw you? >> well, tracy, a lot more people are here right now. just to show that you there is no special treatment. even we had to get tickets to be here this morning. take a look, all the folks out here at this hour, very early, a beautiful sunrise coming out here by the capitol building on the west lawn and at 9:15 this morning, the pope should arrive. he will then have a brief meeting with house speaker boehner. then he will be addressing a joint session of congress. the first time in history that will happen. then the pope comes out on that bal coins, greet the crowd a few minutes and leave. i spoke to folks that lined up to be here him some got here just after midnight. >> we got up early this morning at 1:00 this morning, we got here about 3:00 and we're at the beginning of the line waiting to hear what the beach has to say. hopefully what the pope said it blends in with the people. we can work together as one u t unit. >> reporter: a lot of these people here are from near and far, some around the world and they're just here for a glimpse, a wave and perhaps a few words from the pope later on this morning. just to give you an idea of what it's like in that crowd right now. my photographer and i, we were in there at the front of about 90 minutes ago, it was very, very tightly packed. in fact, once we started moving, a crowd of people pushed tear way to get in front to see francis and get that best view possible. you can see tens of thousands people out here later on this morning. live in walk, matt deluca, nbc 10. >> the pope's other stop includes a visit at catholic charities later today. there pope francis will greet about 200 homeless people who will receive meals. then it is on to new york city t. pope takes off around 4:00. and once he lands, he goes directly to st. patrick's cathedral for an evening prayer service there. he won't arrive in philadelphia for another two days, of course. >> there are big transportation changes already happening around the city. >> whatever you normally do on a set or a sunday if philadelphia, you know, physical out your game plan about how you want to get there, what you are going to do, knowing, you know, what all the restrictions or inconvenience that might already be in place. >> that is good advice from the mayor. nbc toni braxton is on the ben franklin parkway. break down the transportation changes and the restrictions we will be seeing ahead of the pope's visit. >> hey, as the sun rises over the festival grounds here, we're getting a better view. we are looking at security measures already in place on the ground here as well as what the upcoming street closures. consider this, the countdown to the lockdown. here is how the secure perimeter will evolve today. as of 10:00 tonight, if you purchased a yellow parking placard, your car must be moved or it will be towed. you do have the option of using one of six parking garages through monday morning. tonight, security checks began, so only people who live or work along the parkway and around logan circle will be allowed pence. the francis festival grounds will spread from city hall as you see to the art museum. now, back out here live, you can see that up to 40 jumbotrons are in place. the stage has been erected. a covering is being placed over that stage, given the forecast now for sunday, specifically. as many as 8,000 seats are going to cover aikens oval and the distance you see the steps of the art museum, you also see a bright light coming into interview with the light of stay. the producers of the evening concert the festival of family's concert tells us that he's going to start camera checks and sound checks this evening. so given all of the restrictions here, don't have a story to tell. >> we came on a bus. it took us 35 hours to get here. >> i grew up speaking spanish, my first language, having a pope that speaks spanish and is hispanic, it's amazing. >> the pope will parade to the city hall and back. already we spotted families scopeing out the best spot to get the view. >> good morning. expect temperatures to stay into the '80s. showing us quiet low '80s up to about 83. but the weekend forecast, so a few changes on the way. first of all, cooler, down to 75 degrees. clouds and breezy conditions. even more clouds, clouds increasing sunday. breezy for us, 73 degrees t. chance of showers mainly staying to the south of the area. how far north it goes, coming umm, i'm take a closer look at that system and i'll have more details in your pope does arrive in philly on saturday t. city will be rolling out a very special red carpet. yesterday workers at langhorn in bucks county put the finishing touches on three rugs they created for the pope. one is at the airport, 36 af yangs. the it will represent the pope's position on the environment. it's medallion design is inspired by the cathedral's stained glass windows. the miami that worked on this could not be more excited. >> everybody is extremely delighted that you can go home and tell your family that you made something not just for the pope the pope actually walked on. >> the red runner the pope will walk on used more than 100 miles to walk on. she can raise questions about the prosecutor. the government argued the fattah was tainting a jury pool t. federal judge ruled out it isn't set to begin until next may. fattah is accused of stealing taxpayer money, charitable donations, taking a bribe. he denies all charges. congressman fattah is married to nbc anchor renee fattah. she is referenced in a criminal complaint and an affiliate of the fattah enterprise. the feds allege she fraudulently was involved in a scheme. she is not charged and denies wrongdoing. renee is on leave from nbc 10. >> authorities make a major drug bust. they seize more than 350 pounds of cocaine. the drug were hidden in small laminated backs containing pumpkins and squash t. drug versus a street value of more than $6 million. they came into philadelphia from costary ka. investigators have not made any arrests yet. i. the president sex pecked the arrive in d.c. he is headed to washington today for a private dinner with president obama. there are several items on the agenda, including cyber attacks and climate change. meanwhile, decision 2016, gop front return donald trump will be on the ballot. he filed the necessary paperwork and handed over a $40,000 entry check. he had to pledge he won't run as a 3rd party candidate in the general election before next year. during a tweeted he is boycotting fox news, even though network officials say they have can selled a trump appearance first. 6:48. 60 degrees outside. formal charges are now filed against a 21-year-old man accused in several phoenix freeway shootings. he faces 16 counts of aggravated assaults and other charges. he did not file, police did not file terrorism charges, police originally sought. he was tied to four of the 11 shootings reported along phoenix area freeways. today, investigators in maryland will look at an explosion at a home last night. two people were taken to the hospital with injuries. we are not sure of their conditions right now. three town homes are damaged now for the blast. several residents were forced out of their homes bus of heavy smoke. and new this morning, crews found another body in a burned out home in northern california, bringing the death toll from wildfires to sex. recent cooler weather and rain have helped firefighters campaign control of that fire. both cooler temperatures for the papal visit on saturday and sunday. a chance of showers over the weekend, mainly staying to the south of our area. it's something we are watching and updating closely every day. a live look outside, you see the sun shining brightly. a few cloud at the philadelphia international airport. vacate degrees, humidity at 78%. across the area, 46 in allentown, 48 in potts town, 54 degrees in stlik city. 48 in millvale, 54 degrees to start the morning if dover. satellite radar shot shows us no rain, barely any clouds as we head into the afternoon. this is a system we are watching as we get closer to the weekend. as it stays far to the south, we will see it number northward, we could be dealing with showers. right now you see the model show all the rainfall, most of the moisture staying to the south of our region. we know one. for sure, we will see breezy conditions and cooler temperatures. it's a slight chance of showers. most of the moisture staying to the south of us. saturday by noon temperatures at 70 degrees t. high at 75. then by 8:00 p.m. in the 70s about. beautiful day on tap t. same. as we head into sunday a. few degrees cooler. by noon, skating degrees. 73 with mostly cloudy skies on sunday and then our temperatures again staying a little bit below average with that slight chance of showers, mainly on the south. for today, temperatures will range between 78 and 81. sunny and nice. your 7-day forecast shows a cooling trend on the way. enjoy the temperatures in the '80s. we drop back down to the 70s. we stay there on monday, 78 degrees, back to the '80s next tuesday. >> nine minutes before 7:00. there is an accident. >> on the schuylkill expressway. these are our cameras just letting traffic by over on that right-hand shoulder. so you can' see a background there was no traffic getting by. we will at least get 15 minutes, 20 minute delays behind that. the eastbound lanes are doing fine. what happened to our divine street expressway? you can see average speeds. so they're doing okay. we have an okay drive time. we are not seeing that volume increase right now. i will see it later on, especially. we have additional closures that will occur. exits for 23rd street and the ben frank ling i lynn parkway and broadway and 18th will close at 10:00 p.m. just a major proceed for the eagles. they head into week three
